Advanced Placement (AP) Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses are for self motivated students who are seeking an academic challenge that includes more advanced assignments and extensive reading. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced standing at most colleges and universities if they perform well on national AP exams given in May. AP scores are made available in late June or early July and will range from 1-5, with 5 being the best.

AP and Pre-AP courses are weighted and can improve a student’s weighted GPA which may help students achieve college goals.

Additional benefits of taking an AP class will include the experience of improving writing skills and sharpening problem-solving techniques; developing the study habits necessary for tackling rigorous coursework; assuming the responsibility of reasoning, analyzing, and understanding; and studying subjects in greater depth and detail.

KW students have an additional option; they may also purchase college credit through Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) for six of our seven AP courses (and 2 additional nonAP courses) which gives flexibility for transfer credit options. Below is a list of our current AP courses and the recommended grade for each course.

Dual Enrollment College Credits King’s Way Christian High School has entered into an agreement with Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) allowing students to register and receive college credits through NNU for eight specific courses offered at King’s Way. These eight courses include four of our AP course offerings along with Precalculus, Anatomy & Physiology, US History CL and American Government CL/Contemporary World Issues (Note: Contemporary World Issues is not College Level, just American Government.)

Students who take AP classes have the opportunity to take the AP exam in the subject area at the end of the year. If they do well enough on the exam, they can receive college credit from participating colleges. Although this is an excellent program, it doesn’t meet the needs of all AP students. First, each college determines which exams it will accept, as well as what will be considered a passing score and credit granted. For example, some colleges require a 3 out of 5, some a 4 out of 5. Second, all of the AP exams are scheduled within a two week period. This can cause additional stress for the students. Third, some students perform well in the class, but due to test anxiety or other factors, are not able to do well on the AP exam(s). The Dual Enrollment program addresses these challenges and gives students another option to ensure they receive college credit assuming they meet the requirements as outlined by NNU. Dual Enrollment credits appear on an NNU transcript just like any other course taken at the college. Since NNU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, this credit can be used as part of your student’s college education at NNU or transferred to another institution. The credit will be based on the student’s performance in the class over the course of the entire year, rather than on his/her performance in a single term or on one exam.

Your student may also take the AP exam (as applicable) if they choose; however, college credit will typically be given for either dual enrollment college credits or the exam, not both.

In order for your student to participate in this process, he or she will need to fill out a registration form on the NNU website (nnu.edu/concurrentcredit) and submit it along with the appropriate fee by the specified registration date (mid-November). The cost is $75 per credit, a total of $225 for a three-credit course and $300 for a four-credit course (costs are subject to change at the discretion of NNU). This cost is significantly less than traditional college tuition. Please note that regardless of the student’s level of success in the course, there can be no refund of the tuition charges. When registering, please use your full legal name and your primary email address that you check regularly. A SSN is not required, however, providing it speeds up official transcript request processing and registration. Transcripts for NNU credit must be requested directly from NNU at the following link: https://www.nnu.edu/transcript-request-form.

Students may also use the “Placeholder Fee Option” by registering online at nnu.edu/ concurrentcredit and selecting the “Other” option. This option directs students to an online estore to pay a deposit of $10 per course. Using this option allows time to decide if you would like to pay for the college credits. When using this option, full tuition for Fall classes must be paid by the mid-December deadline and full tuition for year-long and Spring courses must be paid by the mid-May deadline. Honors Graduate Program KWHS has developed an Honors Graduate Program to meet the needs of students that display the following characteristics.

Beginning with the class of 2023, to be eligible for Valedictorian or Salutatorian, a graduate MUST also be an honors graduate.

Honors Tracks The following table outlines possible graduation paths that would allow for the most honors level courses. Students are not required to follow one of these tracks. These are just examples of typical possibilities.

Please note that some classes have prerequisites. Check the course descriptions for each class to determine course prerequisites. There are three different math tracks depending on when a student completes Algebra 1 and Geometry. There are two different science tracks depending on a student’s 8th grade MAP score and teacher recommendation. A weighted class improves a student’s “weighted GPA,” which some colleges look at during the admission process. Honors classes are in bold.

NCAA NCAA ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (National Collegiate Athletic Association) The NCAA produces a comprehensive publication titled “NCAA Guide for the College-bound Student-athlete” which contains specific and updated information on eligibility, recruiting, financial aid and much more.

Potential college athletes are encouraged to review this information at www.ncaa.org and are responsible for verifying that coursework taken is approved. Current requirements for students entering college include: 1.

High School Students who wish to participate in college level athletics are advised to register through NCAA as early as their sophomore year to insure that all core courses are completed.

2. Successfully complete the appropriate number of Academic Core Units for Division I or II during Grades 9 through 12. As your active appreciation of literature grows, you will become more familiar with the tools of the craft of writing. You will continue to develop your own writing skills as we work in a variety of styles and forms. There will be creative as well as more structured writing, response to literature through writing, and opportunities to hone your analytical skills.

PRE-AP ENGLISH 9 Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: English 8 (grade B+ average) and teacher recommendation Grade: 9 Grad. Requ: English This course is designed for motivated students interested in a challenging freshman English experience. English ENGLISH 11 Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Grade: 11 Grad. Requ: English This course enables students to probe literature and its parts in order to understand it.

Students are expected to read widely and earnestly engage in an ongoing scholarly pursuit of understanding. The course requires extensive reading and writing. It highlights characters, action, setting, themes, style, and the blending of these elements by means of class discussions, lectures, audio and audio-visual aids, dramatization, oral presentations, and extensive writing assignments. The reading content is primarily American prose both fiction and nonfiction.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Pre-AP English 10 (grade B+ or better) and teacher recommendation Prerequisite: English 10 (grade A) and teacher recommendation Grade: 11 Grad. Requ: English NNU credits available; AP Exam AP Language and Composition is the equivalent to a first year, college level introductory English course. Students will become skilled readers of prose as well as skilled writers who can write in a variety of forms for a variety of purposes.

ENGLISH 12 Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Grade: 12 Grad. Requ: English This course builds on the skills students have developed during their high school English careers. Students will be tasked with critically analyzing literature and culture through class discussions, lectures, audio and visual aids, presentations, reading, and writing. By the end of this course, students will have become better writers, readers, speakers, and thinkers which will prepare them for their future endeavors.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE & COMPOSITION Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: AP English Language (grade B+ or better) and teacher recommendation Prerequisite: English 11 (grade A) and teacher recommendation Grade: 12 Grad. Requ: English NNU credits available; AP Exam AP Literature and Composition is the equivalent to a first year, college level introductory English course. Students are expected to read widely and earnestly engage in an ongoing scholarly pursuit of understanding. The course requires extensive homework and includes formal AP test practice sessions. The reading content is British and American prose, both fiction and nonfiction. Math ALGEBRA 1 Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Pre-algebra Grade: 9 Grad. Requ: Math This course provides a formal development and foundation of algebraic skills and concepts.

Topics include: operations with real numbers, simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and solving problems dealing with proportion or scale. Other topics include probability, linear and nonlinear functions, exponential expressions, operations with polynomials, and solving word problems using algebraic expressions.

GEOMETRY Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Grade: 9, 10 Grad. Requ: Math Students will use foundational skills from Algebra 1 to reason and solve problems related to geometric properties and relationships. Topics include expanded understanding of area, surface area and volume, lines, angles, triangles, circles, and transformations. Additional topics include geometric and algebraic proofs and trigonometry. Students will be challenged to persevere, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct arguments, and model geometric properties using mathematics.

ALGEBRA 2 Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Geometry Grades: 9 - 12 Grad. Requ: Math This course reviews and extends knowledge around equations, tables and graphs that describe relationships between quantities, while addressing new concepts to include polynomial, logarithmic and rational. This course will also focus on the mathematical practices: persevering, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, constructing arguments, modeling with mathematics, using appropriate tools strategically, attending to precision, looking for and using structure and regularity in repeated reasoning.

PRECALCULUS Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Algebra 2 (recommended B or better) Grades: 11, 12 Grad. Requ: Math or Elective NNU credits available King’s Way’s Precalculus class is a yearlong class built for students who have excelled in Algebra and Geometry and are looking to prepare themselves for college level math. The class covers Algebra and Geometry review as well as basic Trigonometry required for later advanced math classes both at King’s Way and in college. Students are required to deliver a high quality of work and are held to a high standard of general academic excellence. This course adheres to the WA state standards as with other math classes at King’s Way.

Math AP CALCULUS AB Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Precalculus and teacher recommendation Grades: 12 Grad. Requ: Math or Elective NNU credits available; AP Exam King’s Way’s AP Calculus class is a yearlong class that doubles as a concurrent college credit course. The class covers the basics of college level calculus including limits, differentiation, integration, and applications of each of these topics. By the end of this course, a student will have completed the equivalent of Calculus I in a semester-based university. As such, students in this class are required to deliver a high quality of work and are held to a high standard of general academic excellence.

DATA SCIENCE Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Algebra 2 or teacher recommendation Grades: 12 Grad. Requ: Math or Elective Data Science is a class designed by Stanford University as an alternative to Algebra 2 and Precalculus in the High School classroom. The course will introduce students to the main ideas in the field of Data Science through free tools such as Google Sheets, Python, Data Commons, and Tableau. Students will learn to be data explorers in project-based units, through which they will develop their understanding of data analysis, sampling, correlation/causation, bias and uncertainty, probability, modeling with data, making and evaluating data-based arguments, the power of data in society, and more. At the end of the course students will have a portfolio of their Data Science work to showcase their newly developed abilities.

Science ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Grades: 9 Grad. Requ: Lab Science Environmental Science is a class that looks at how we impact our environment and how the environment impacts us. The class will focus on resource use, extinction, pollution, and climate change. Students will gain a variety of skills to prepare them for future science classes along with skills that are important for living a responsible life on our planet. God had called humanity to be stewards of His great creation, this class will help us all learn how to live in that calling.

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (APES) Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite for 10th grade: Environmental Science or other 9th grade science course B or better Grades: 10-12 Grad. Requ: Lab Science AP Exam This course follows the College Board Advanced Placement course outline. In AP Environmental Science we study how the environment can impact our lives and how our lives impact the environment. We look at resource use, pollution, extinction, and climate change. This class will have you prepared to be successful on the AP test in May. The course emphasizes the connections between environmental issues. The course includes the opportunity for field work.

The course will attempt to give you a deeper understanding of the scientific processes that go on around you and the interconnections among the sciences, technology, society, and the environment. This class is important for students planning careers in medicine, science, and engineering.

This course follows the College Board Advanced Placement course outline. This course is intended for the students who are planning on pursuing a career in a field of science. The course emphasizes problem solving. The primary topics are solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and base equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry and carbon chemistry.

Approximately 30-50% of class time will be devoted to laboratory activities.

Requ: Lab Science NNU credits available Anatomy is an upper level science course. This class will take a detailed look into the chemical processes of our body and the structures involved in individual systems. Students will dissect different animals in order to visualize gross anatomy of the muscular, cardiovascular and nervous systems. We will study in depth what cells, tissues and organs are made of at a molecular level.

Students must be prepared and able to dissect multiple specimens without assistance.

CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Prerequisite: Algebra 1 recommended Grade: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Lab Science This course provides a conceptually-based exposure to the fundamental principles and processes of the physical world. Topics include basic concepts of motion, forces, energy, heat, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of matter and the universe. They will develop a broad vocabulary, understand basic grammar principles and become comfortable and confident listening to and speaking the language. Students will learn vocabulary, grammar, and culturally appropriate uses of ASL through natural, everyday conversational situations.

In order to progress, it is important that students become comfortable using their bodies and “listening” with their eyes. To encourage and foster the development of these skills, communication through speaking will become less and less frequent as the course progresses.

Students will explore art as a means of understanding and responding to history and culture. The class will also focus on developing the ability to create projects that address design problems and respond to the artwork of others. ADVANCED ART Course length: 2 semesters (1 credits) Prerequisite: Art Grade: 10-12 Grad. Requ: Arts or Elective Advanced art is a studio course in which students will increase technical skills, develop a more sophisticated approach to process and subject matter, and create a portfolio of individual work. In this class students will experiment with materials and analyze work. Through experimentation and refinement, each person will create a body of work that includes observational drawing, mixed media and a variety of self-chosen media. The studio environment of the class will be used to support analysis, reflection and refinement of work.

BAND Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) Grade: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Arts or Elective Band is open to students who have achieved a moderate degree of proficiency on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Special circumstances will be considered on a case to case basis. This ensemble will perform at a variety of events, including football games, parades, and festivals. Students are required to be part of the marching band unless they participate in a school activity/sport that directly conflicts with marching band events.

Summer camp in August is required. This is a performance based class and all rehearsals, football games, pep band, evening concerts, and festivals are required. Class fee applies.

Journey Theater is thrilled to be partnering with King’s Way to offer dance and drama classes. In addition to introducing students to the wonderful world of the stage, these classes will also open up a number of performance opportunities throughout the year. Typically, students cast in Journey’s 5-7 fully staged musicals and plays each year are required to concurrently complete training in Journey’s after-school program. However, taking one of these classes at King’s Way during the school day would satisfy that training requirement, allowing full access for students to try out for the productions.

DANCE 1 (Journey Theater) Course length: 1 semester (0.5 credits) Grade: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Arts, PE, or Elective Whether you want to learn Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, or Musical Theater—this class will give you the foundation you’ll need to succeed, while exploring dance as a means of expression! Intro to Dance is a semester-long course that will teach you basic technique and stretching that will build your stamina and strength while learning and memorizing terms and choreography. This class will count as a PE credit.

Elected student leaders plan events, fundraisers, and service projects and help shape a positive, Christ-centered environment in the high school. In addition, students in leadership are responsible for helping to create lasting memories by putting together the school yearbook. Students are responsible for all aspects of producing the school yearbook from taking pictures to creating stories that capture the important moments of the year. Students that do well in this course are creative, motivated, and positive and are able to work collaboratively to meet deadlines. Students will frequently use time outside of class, including before and after school, to make sure all leadership and yearbook tasks are completed.

Other Electives GLOBAL STUDIES Course length: 1 semesters (0.5 credit) Grade: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Elective Do you enjoy traveling and seeing the world? Are you interested in learning about other cultures? Global Studies (GLS) is a way of offering students an opportunity to go beyond the standard high school curriculum to make connections to the larger world. It is designed to challenge students to expand their understanding of the modern world, by questioning whether the changes in our global system have made us safer, healthier, and happier. Students will approach global problems with the spiritual needs of our world seen as a high priority.

Students will learn that what we aim to do in the world should fit with what Christ is doing in the world. We will explore how populations are changing, how international trade works, and focused surveys of topics from human rights and migration to conflict and the environment.

DEBATE Course length: 1 semesters (0.5 credit) – Offered semester 2 Grade: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Elective Debate helps students discover the power of words and uncover their confidence. Students will learn how to research a topic from a practical and philosophical point of view; construct, defend, and refute an argument; measure and apply values to particular situations; and communicate in a persuasive way to many different types of audiences. Weekly handson activities accompany each lesson to allow students to apply these skills in a fun and practical way. In addition, this course offers students weekly logic lessons with exercises to improve their reasoning and analytical skills. Throughout this course, students will also learn to apply a Christian worldview to the activity of debate and be inspired to use their communication skills in service to Christ.

HEALTH Course length: 1 semester (0.5 credits) Grades: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Health Students in this course will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on health issues facing teenagers in the 21st century. In addition, students will garner an understanding of the components of a balanced nutritional diet, drug and alcohol prevention and education, abstinence, and emotional and mental health. The class places an emphasis on decisionmaking and the right choices.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Course length: 1 semester (0.5 credits) Grades: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Physical Education or Elective Students will learn and gain experience with lifelong fitness activities and develop their cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, as well as their skill and knowledge in a variety of individual and team sports activities. There will be an emphasis on fitness and wellness concepts. Washington State required health and fitness standards will also be taught in this class.

Other Electives PE CREDIT FOR ATHLETICS Three semester long PE classes (1.5 credits total) are required for graduation. All students must take at least 1 actual PE class. Students may request credit for up to 2 classes due to active participation on an athletic team. One season will equal one class.

PE credit for athletics will be listed as PE Sports on the transcript with a .5 credit awarded and a ‘P’ for Pass as the grade, which does not calculate into a GPA. Students may contact the high school office to request PE credit.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP/YEARBOOK Course length: 2 semesters (1 credit) ***Must be elected or chosen by administration to be in this course Grades: 9-12 Grad. Requ: Arts, CTE, or elective Each year KWHS holds elections for student government to determine which students will help lead and shape culture at King’s Way. Elected student leaders plan events, fundraisers, and service projects and help shape a positive, Christ-centered environment in the high school. In addition, students in leadership are responsible for helping to create lasting memories by putting together the school yearbook. Students are responsible for all aspects of producing the school yearbook from taking pictures to creating stories that capture the important moments of the year. Students that do well in this course are creative, motivated, and positive and are able to work collaboratively to meet deadlines. Students will frequently use time outside of class, including before and after school, to make sure all leadership and yearbook tasks are completed.

MATH LAB Course length: 2 semesters (not for credit) Grades: 9-12 Grad. Requ: None ***This course is not always offered each year. Please check with the registrar.

TEACHER’S AIDE Course length: 1 semester (.5 credits) Grades: 11,12 Grad. Requ: None Students serving as TA’s play an important support role for the teachers and classes they serve. Duties may include organizing, grading, prepping labs, filing, photocopying, and supporting other students or other duties as assigned.
