Sometimes it take time through trial and error but if you constantly work on your idea or passion you will eventually get it right. One such idea is Game of Thrown TV series, the author George R.R. Martin, who saw his novel series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ was adapted into the worldwide hit television series that connected with the world and it generated millions for all involved.

In our June 2019 we feature the creatives who are blazing the night sky like shooting stars setting trends and following their ideas. AFRIMA 2019 Submissions Open The 6th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially opened its online portal for submission of songs and videos between the period of May 15 and August 2, 2019, during which music artistes and music professionals living in Africa and in the Diaspora will submit entries on https:// afrima.org/afrima2019/ to be considered for honours at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards.

Following the unveiling of the calendar of events for the 6th annual AFRIMA on Monday, May 13 at the African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the entry submission process enables African music artistes, managers, producers, record label owners, recording companies, video directors, disc jockeys (DeeJays) and choreographers/dancers a chance to vie for the possibility of emerging winner in any of the 36 AFRIMA awards categories comprising of 10 Regional and 26 Continental categories.

The basics of any business are the same as you think of starting your creative business you need to know the fundamentals of business. A business is based on supply and demand, as an entrepreneur one aims at seeing a need and fulfilling it and in the process make a profit. Then the question is what does a creative do in this same situation? The answer is summed up in two words ‘Great Work’.

Great Work is your biggest tool in developing your idea, it will create demand for your service, skill or product. You might be asking yourself how will this happen. The answer is anyone who will see your great work will recommend others to check you out. In the process you will make a sale that will translate to profit, not forgetting good planning and clear goals.

Here are some key points that are vital to the success of your creative business;

• Demand: Who is buying creative products or services?

• Competition: Identification of others that are doing similar creative products or services. Who is selling creative products or services?

Turn your creativity into business?

Using the definition provided by John Howkins the author of ‘The Creative Economy: How People Make Money From Ideas’. The creative economy comprises advertising, architecture, art, crafts, design, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, R&D, software, toys and games, TV and radio, and video games.

So with that in mind let us answer the first question ‘What is a Creative Business?’ It is any business that uses the exploitation of ideas to make money. Here are a few businesses that are part of the creative economy Wedding & Events Planner, Blogger, Influencer, Publicist, Graphic Designer, Poet and writer. These are some of the common ones we can identify with in Zimbabwe and can track some individuals around us who are making money from ideas.

• Licensing: Do you need to register your product, or

your brand, in some cases you would need the protection of an association.

• Funding: Does your creative business need capital to start and grow, in the idea stage calculate everything together with the interest of money borrowed.

• Commitment: As a person starting a creative business you need to be commitment and involved at every step of the way. • Support: Get all the support you need from your family, friends, financial support etc.

• Management: Get people who are experienced,

who are passionate, and drive can your business forward.

So in a nutshell you can start a creative business you need to define what you do, where you going, and what success is for you.

When launching a creative business, there are a many factors to take into consideration but the key is to start experience is a good teacher. The reality also is that not all ideas but only some ideas you have may be suitable to pursue, go for it start now, begin your start-up creative business. As a creative take your art, skill or talent as a business get your plan together and be committed to the success of your creative business.

This is a critical question to ask yourself because it helps you know what your interests or passion is. To know what you wish to do is your first step. The next and most important step is to research your passion or interest. Take for an example if you have an interest or a passion for the film industry the next step is to find out all you can about the film industry;

What would you like to do in the film industry?

What part of the film business would you like to work in?

What is the local film businesses in your area like?

As with everything you need to find out as much as you can about it, Take for example you are an artist who might want to sell your art—locally, nationally, internationally. You need to stay in touch with new developments in your industry, how the economy in various places is affecting art buyers and collectors.

Too many awesome ideas die or are lost in notes and are cleaned up on whiteboards, some people also have a hard time to find the right idea to peruse. There are many ways to ensure your idea is new and worth pursuing. You can gather information from industry associations, web searches, periodicals, government or parastatal institutions and industry leaders. This will help you narrow down your idea’s list to get to the one worth perusing.

These questions help you choose your area of specialty, they also help you know the requirements needed to be part of the industry of your choice. Lastly, they help you know what you would like to do. For some people, getting the idea and imagining the possibilities is the easy part. It is what follows that is the problem.

To know your industry is vital here are some questions you need to ask yourself;

Hip-hop has been the pulse of the youth for over 30 years with artists such as Run DMC, Tupac, Kingpin, Kendrick Lamar, AKA, and Tumi being the leading voices. The Mambo song catapulted Asaph in to the legendary Zimbabwean Hip-Hop league of hit makers such as Kingpin, Major Players, POY, EXQ, Cal_Vin, Junior Brown, Stunner, Tien Diamond to name a few.

Asaph is no stranger to the Zimbabwean hip-hop industry with multiple award nominations and awards to his name. Currently with two nominations in the upcoming Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards 2019. Born Tafadzwa Tarukwana aka Asaph is one of the best storytelling rappers in Zimbabwe. KA Magazine managed to catch up with the skilful artist for an interview.

How did you start your musical journey to get to where you are today?

Well basically I began trying to perform at as many clubs and shows as possible from as back as Tha Flow Sessions at Cape To Cairo to Bigger Than Hip Hop at Amakhosi Theater. After every song or good performance more people would get to know about me and I’d “level up” and different people with access to different things began to put me on to Bigger shows and platforms from Kalawa Home Coming to a ShadeOGrey endorsement which really helped build my brand image and visibility.

What is your creative song writing process?

I get a beat from a producer and hear what the instrumental he creates feels like and what mood it gives me then I try and express the mood or feeling that I get from the instrumental into lyrics and flows. My concepts come the same way because a certain instrumental can give me a vibe that reminds of me a story or situation that I’ve been in and I tell that story and the instrumental will be like the sound track to this movie that I’m trying to describe in my lyrics.

How would you describe your musical style?

I’m a story teller. I really love telling stories and making people feel something and think deeply and the message behind the story or the certain lyrics that I’ll be saying. I have different styles if where speaking about how the music sounds because SNDR and OVYAAS don’t sound the same, NO STRESS and MAMBO don’t sound the same so I believe I can be very diverse as well. I just try to make whatever feels right.

Can you tell us what inspired the ‘Mambo’ your hit song?

When I got the beat for MAMBO Rayobeats had sent it in a pack of over 20beats. I listened to them until I got to MAMBO and the horns really stood out to me because they sounded like a real royal statement. The horns on the beat also reminded me of a similar sound that can be heard on BAM by Jay Z and Damien Marley and that’s how I thought of having the idea of using a Dancehall chorus. I took my sample chorus to Fish F Mc Swagg and Tha Dawg of Illduce Studios and they added the body ri support my ndini mambo chant. I had already written the verses based on the MAMBO concept and it was a hit.

Can you share with us what your most memorable performance to date and Why? My NO STRESS performance at the Bulawayo Arts Awards 2018 will always be my most memorable show. The energy in that room was too charged and the band I was playing with really knew what they were doing so the quality of that set was very good and NO STRESS was really loved by everyone at that time so the energy in the room was right and the Audience even gave it a standing ovation.

Who are your heroes or people you look up to?

I look up to Nipsey Hussles grind and how he gave back to his community. I’m really trying to emulate that heart for community and even youth development here in the city. Musically I look up to AKA, Kendrick Lamar, Winky D and Oliver Mtukudzi.

Can you give us your favourite quote and one of your own?

My favorite quote is “If all you see is what you see then you won’t get to see all there is to see” and to me that basically means look beyond yourself. My own quote is not really my own because I didn’t create it but I’ve used it so much many of my friends and people who follow my music think I did, I even recorded a project and named it by this phrase. “Diamonds Deserve Diamonds”

Who are your favourite musicians?

Kendrick Lamar, Tekno, Drake, SZA, Chengeto Brown and Kanye West.

What is on your music playlist now?

Right now on my playlist there’s Buju Banton, Tory Lanez, Giggs, dvsn, Offset, Gudo Guru, Nutty O and Chengeto Brown

What new projects, collaborations, shows can we look forward to?

I just finished work on a project titled “The Peoples Rapper” and it will be a 8 track tape with 4 new songs and last year’s singles and bonus songs some new and some you’ve heard like “Mambo” and “Good Time Anthem” are both on there.

I’ve recently got a show I’m hosting on Skyzmetro FM called Good Time Friday’s so I haven’t been performing as much I needed time to settle in properly but after the release of the EP I’ll be hosting live sessions at the Vista like I was doing last year before the Bulawayo Arts Awards.

She has made a name for herself as the go-to woman for all things creative.

You may have bumped into her blog covering some of the trending issues with insight and wit. She’s written for various publications and is currently employed as a copywriter at an advertising agency in Harare. Bulawayo born Thembelihle Terry-Lynne Zulu is the personal blogger that you’ve come to know as Thembi Terry. Here’s what you probably didn’t know about the energetic Zimbabwean blogger.

How did you start your journey to get to where you are today?

My blog is a homework assignment that just never ended. We had to take New Media as a module in Varsity and for me it took off and there was no way I was gonna let it go. I continued to grow with it and a couple of revisions later I think I’ve finally nailed it.

How would you describe the Zimbabwean creative industries?

The TV show that best describes the Zimbabwean creative industries is ‘Survivor.’ Its literally survival of the fittest. Creating content in Zimbabwe is hard work and many people jump on and fall away along the way. It looks easy but all that glitters isn’t gold.

It almost feels like there can only be one winner. If you’ve been following the #OpenUpTheIndustry hashtag in South Africa, the creative industries in Zimbabwe are something like that. It’s a damn shame cause quite literally, together we achieve more. You can’t build an industry on your own. That’s not how it works. We need to open up the industries and have more creative players.

Can you tell us more about the work you do as a social influencer?

Let’s start with I’m picky AF! I am unable to pretend, so if I am not into a brand, I won’t waste their time or mine. I’ll let them know straight up that it’s not for me. In my blog post about being an influencer, I cover the basics on how to do it right and if you’re doing it right, you’ll have to turn down some jobs to preserve your street cred and the trust you have built with your audience.

Can you tell us what is Girl Grandeur Zimbabwe?

Girl Grandeur Zimbabwe is a social club for women and girls in Zimbabwe. I have an obsession with seeing women win so that’s the main reason why Girl Grandeur was founded. It’s like my own little way of countering the Big Boys Club by creating a safe space for women and girls to come together and share ideas, opportunities and personal experiences in order to have meaningful discussions about life as a woman living in Zimbabwe.

As a social entrepreneur what is your driving force and what causes do you support?

There are three causes that I am passionate about women and girls, new media and the arts.

As you work in advertising would you think that gives you an edge to how you develop engaging content?

What is your creative writing process?

I love to create content on the go. Most of my blog posts are drafted on my phone. There’s something daunting about typing on a laptop, it feels a lot like work but when I’m texting on my phone, it’s like I’m texting a friend and the story just flows out of me. Plus, I’m never without my phone so I can text in bed, in the kombi or in the fuel queue.

I find most of my content ideas on social media and TV. I’ve found that articles that I write on trending topics do much better than ordinary posts. I’ve also started incorporating the Twitter content leads into my blogs to cite the source. Hopefully the people I follow on Twitter don’t block me.

How would you describe your blog what are the main issues you write about?

My blog breaks all the rules, it’s the rebel without applause. Most blog sites will tell you how you need to zero in on a niche and stick to it but I threw caution to the wind and decided to have a personal blog. This means I can blog about everything that matters to me that is. I’ve categorised my work into 4 so that you can quickly find the topic that interests you from the jump. I write for women but ironically majority of my readers are male. I can’t wrap my head around that.

Being a copywriter has given me a platform to learn the trapeze between the brand’s expectations and the content that my readers would like to see. If the swing between these two isn’t calculated, someone is gonna eat concrete and that someone will probably be me. I now know how brands think and how they pick the influencers that they use and that’s definitely given me a leg up. I use my platforms to try out new tricks that brands are too conservative for. When I’m on my blog best believe I am peackocking! Letting the brand know that this could be you but you’re playing – start paying.

What is your favourite blog post on your website?

I can’t pick just one. All my blog posts are a part of me. If I published it, it was something that I felt was worth sharing. I can’t overlook how going through the #SheHeals challenge changed me as a human being. What people didn’t realise is that majority of those blog posts were written with my face drenched in tears. I had never been so vulnerable and honest with my readers. I took them through some things which was different from what they were used to. I think during my time of healing, they got to really know Thembelihle Terry-Lynne Zulu. They were so emotionally charged that I never revisit them…. ever.

Let’s revisit this when I’m back from the United States of America!
