Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) takes its name from the Kwantlen First Nation.

We work, study, and live in a region south of the Fraser River which overlaps with the unceded traditional and ancestral lands of the Kwantlen, Musqueam, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqayt and Kwikwetlem peoples.

April 1, 2021 marked our 40th Anniversary. Despite the restrictions of a pandemic, we found ways to celebrate this major milestone, including some great retrospective videos that I encourage you to view on our website. KPU has truly excelled during this past year and I hope you are proud of your association with this university. MEE T OUR NE W V ICE PRESIDENT, E X TERNAL AFFAIRS AND CEO, KPU FOUNDATION Randall Heidt came to KPU in June from North Island College (NIC), where he served as Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, responsible for Marketing and Communications, the Office of Advancement, Business Development, and the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation, along with Indigenous, Government and Community Relations. He also served as Executive Director of the North Island College Foundation. Prior to NIC, Heidt served as Executive Director, External Relations, at the College of New Caledonia.

Previously, he was city editor of the Prince George Citizen daily newspaper. Under his leadership, the newsroom won the Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service in Journalism – one of Canada’s highest journalism honours.

Heidt holds a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University, a Bachelor of Applied Communications from Mount Royal University and a Professional Fundraising Certificate from Boston University. He is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, and belongs to the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

He has also been an active community member, serving on a number of boards, including the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, Chambers of Commerce in Comox Valley, Campbell River and Prince George and the Innovation Island Technology Association. He has also served as a Special Olympics Coach.

Heidt is in the process of moving to the Lower Mainland this fall. Having worked remotely through the summer, he is very much looking forward to having more opportunities going forward to meet up with KPU’s donors and alumni.

KPU NAMES MELVILLE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AFTER $8-MILLION DONATION FROM PHILANTHROPISTS This past September, Kwantlen Polytechnic University announced the renaming of its business school to the Melville School of Business to recognize a historic donation commitment from philanthropists George and Sylvia Melville.

George Melville, who co-founded Boston Pizza International Inc., and his wife Sylvia are donating $8 million to KPU over four years to create tremendous opportunities for students.

"Sylvia and I are very proud to be able to make this investment in the future of the KPU School of Business,” said George Melville, who served as KPU’s second chancellor from 2014 to 2020. “Our hope is that the Advanced Teaching and Learning Fund will enhance the educational experience for students for many years to come. There are also funds for scholarships and bursaries, which will make KPU’s excellent business program more accessible to students than ever before.”

“This very generous gift will create tremendous opportunities for students and faculty and will significantly enhance the reputation of both the business school and KPU,” says Dr. Alan Davis, President and Vice Chancellor of KPU. “George Melville’s sterling reputation as a business leader, philanthropist and community builder will be a tremendous asset as we continue to shape exceptional entrepreneurs who graduate ready to work, willing to learn and poised to lead.”

The Melvilles’ donation includes:

$3 million to establish the Melville School of Business Advanced Teaching and Learning Technology Fund, which will provide students with the most up-to-date teaching technology and equipment used in business and industry; $2 million to create the Melville School of Business Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide $100,000 in scholarships annually for undergraduate business students; $1 million to establish the Melville School of Business Endowed Bursary Fund, which will provide $50,000 annually for bursaries for undergraduate business students; $1 million to create the Melville School of Business Endowed Scholarship Fund for postbaccalaureate students, which will provide $50,000 for scholarships for post-baccalaureate business students;

$500,000 for the Melville School of Business Endowed Case Competition Fund, which will provide $25,000 annually to support business students taking part in case competitions; $450,000 to create the Melville School of Business Incubator Fund, which will provide the necessary seed funding to launch and support operations of the Melville School of Business Venture Fund; $50,000 for the Melville School of Business Activation Fund, which will support the rebranding of the Melville School of Business.

The Melvilles previously donated $500,000 to create the Melville Centre for Dialogue at KPU’s Richmond campus.

They have also donated millions to organizations in British Columbia, including the Union Gospel Mission, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, St. Paul’s IBD Centre, Covenant House and the Rick Hansen Foundation.

“George and Sylvia Melville are true community builders and have been champions of KPU for many years,” says Kelly Finlay, chair of the board of directors of the KPU Foundation.

“Both their children attended KPU and their passion for this university comes from witnessing directly how big an impact this institution has on its students.”

George Melville is chairman and owner of Melville Global Investments Inc., a diversified investment portfolio which includes ownership in Mr. Lube, Naramata Benchland Properties, and Bamboo World Kitchen, along with other public and private investments.

Previously, he co-founded Boston Pizza International Inc. with business partner Jim Treliving and together they turned it into the T&M Group of companies, with operations throughout North America and sales of over $1 billion

per year. In 1990, they founded what became the Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects, which has raised and donated over $18 million to Canadian charities.

“The gift from the Melvilles will not only elevate the reputation of our School of Business but will support advancements in leading-edge teaching and enrich the student learning experience,” says Stephanie Howes, Dean of the Melville School of Business.

“The generous investment in endowed student awards will provide meaningful support for hundreds of students and strengthen our students’ affiliation to their business school. Students will have more opportunity to build their skills in communication, teamwork and critical thinking through case competitions and work-integrated learning connections with industry.”

Beginning in 2003, George Melville was a member of KPU’s board of governors for six years, during which time he held various leadership roles. As chairperson of the audit committee, he helped guide KPU during its transition from a community college into a university in 2008. In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate from KPU in recognition of his outstanding professional achievements.

ACCELERATING RESEARCH AT KPU As Canada’s leading polytechnic university, KPU engages in impactful applied research, innovation, and scholarly endeavours, where faculty, staff, and students collaborate with industry, community, government, and academic partners. As we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, we are excited to share an exponential growth and impact in these endeavours.

Since 2018, we have witnessed a tripling of our research chair positions. Thanks to a major donation from the Dr. Sherman Jen Education Foundation, competitions are underway to appoint The Dr. Sherman Jen Research Chair in Next-Generation Design and The Dr. Sherman Jen Research Chair in Applied Genomics.

Funding from the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program has enabled the appointment of Dr. Asma Sayed as the CRC in South Asian Literary and Cultural Studies, and Dr. Karen Davison as the CRC in Nutrition Informatics.

This year also saw an expansion of our new Applied Genomics Centre, thanks to significant funding from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, in addition to co-investments from KPU and several partners.

The University has further supported an ongoing transformation of KPU’s research enterprise and innovation ecosystems. Specifically, it has endowed $4 million to invest in research undertaken by members of the KPU community.

MAJOR DONATION HELPS KPU EXPAND RESEARCH CAPACITY A major donation from the Dr. Sherman Jen Education Foundation, announced in May, will allow Kwantlen Polytechnic University to expand its applied research capacity. The $3-million gift will also support students pursuing global studies.

Dr. Sherman Jen founded Maple Leaf Educational Systems in 1995, blending the western curriculum and teaching methods with traditional Chinese approaches to education. It has since expanded to 115 schools spanning preschool to high school with a student population of more than 46,000.

Dr. Jen’s innovative educational leadership has been recognized by both Chinese and Canadian governments. Dr. Jen has also been recognized for his services to education and to cross-cultural understanding.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Jen and his team in the establishment of their high school at our Richmond campus,” said KPU President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Alan Davis. “Throughout this process, Dr. Jen has been a great friend to KPU, and I am delighted to announce this exciting new facet to our relationship.”

The inaugural chairs will be appointed in two very key areas for KPU: The Dr. Sherman Jen Research Chair in Next-Generation Design and The Dr. Sherman Jen Research Chair in Applied Genomics.

The endowment will also support 10 Dr. Sherman Jen Scholarships in Global Studies each year in studies abroad through field schools and studies at other universities.

This will support KPU’s commitment to embrace all cultures and advance global understanding.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Dr. Sherman Jen Education Foundation for this very generous donation to our KPU Foundation to support students and to support research,” said Davis.

“This opportunity to expand our applied research capacity will be truly transformative for KPU. The scholarships will create tremendous opportunities for KPU students to embrace the opportunities of global studies both virtually and again in person once the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted.”

“MLES adheres to the philosophy of blending the best of China and the West in offering quality education, and is committed to the mission of providing an elite education to all students regardless of race, colour or nationality,” says Dr. Jen. The donation will create an endowment, to be held by the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation, that will be used to create two Dr. Sherman Jen Research Chairs. Each Research Chair will be allocated for a term of five years, renewable for an additional term. When they conclude, KPU will then be able to choose new Research Chairs in other key areas for many decades to come.

STUDENT SUPPORT IS NOT KEEPING PACE WITH ASSESSED NEED Donor-funded bursaries and awards help bridge the gap between demonstrated student need and financial aid sources administered by KPU’s Student Awards and Financial Assistance Office, and are more important than ever, as this gap is widening.

The following chart reflects the exponential growth in unmet financial need over five pre-pandemic years at KPU. Factors such as increased living costs (e.g. rent, groceries, gas) combined with incremental growth in student tuition and fees, textbook costs,

technology costs etc. have outpaced the growth of financial aid over the same period. KPU is working hard with initiatives like Zero Textbook Costs (ZTC) course delivery (over 300 courses at KPU-the first program of its kind in Canada) and finding other ways to cut costs for our students, but the unmet need is still growing.

MEET WAHEED A. TAIWO

Student, alumnus, KPU staff member, volunteer, mentor, and establisher of three student award endowments at KPU Waheed came to KPU in May, 2011 as an international student. He grew up in Nigeria and formed a deep love of education at an early age. He first studied internationally in Finland at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, which has a student exchange agreement with KPU, so he decided to come and study in Canada. He loved it here. “The students and instructors were very friendly, the learning was very engaging, and I had more fun studying here.”

It didn’t take much, he says, to convince his wife, Bola, to join him as an international student at KPU herself. And the two have made Canada, and KPU, their home. “My plan wasn’t to be a life-timer!” he laughs. Yet here he is, 10 years later.

Waheed has earned a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resources Management (2015), a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting (2020), a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration – Global Business Management (2021) and is currently studying for a Diploma in Computer Information Systems. He looks forward to when KPU will introduce Masters programs.

Right from the start, Waheed volunteered on campus, joining the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA) START program in 2011. In 2014 he volunteered at the KPU Foundation event where KPU’s Civic Plaza Campus was announced, and became a Student Engagement Peer supporting events hosted through the KPU Future Students’ Office. Waheed also served as an orientation leader to welcome new students to KPU and as a peer mentor in the Learning Centre. Waheed served on the KPU Alumni Association Board of Directors 2015-2017. In 2015 he was elected to the KSA as a business student representative, and became Vice President of Finance and Operations. At this time, he also started the Kwantlen Entrepreneurial Students Association club (KESA).

Waheed’s first employment at KPU was as a Student Assistant with the IT department in 2011. As a student employee, he went on to serve as a Student Research Assistant/Lead at the Learning Centre, working in various roles until March 2015, when he joined the KSA. Waheed became a staff member at KPU in February 2016 with KPU International as an International Recruitment and Admissions Support Assistant. Waheed is currently Student Success Coach, Post-Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs, in the KPU Melville School of Business.

As a student Waheed excelled, and as a tireless volunteer on campus, he was an excellent candidate to receive donor-funded student awards. Receiving these left a lasting impression. When asked why he established his own named student award endowments (which he has built through payroll donations and matching KPU Family Campaign contributions, since his employment at KPU began), he had this to say: “For two reasons. The first is because someone showed me the importance of going to great lengths to support our students. During my work at the Learning Centre, I saw the lengths that the Director, Lyn Benn, would go to help alleviate students’ issues. Although I worked there for less than a year, she managed to ignite in me a passion for supporting our students. I can say that much of what I have done to support our students since then was because of her influence.

Second, I have benefitted greatly from my work as a KPU volunteer. It improved the quality of my network, enhanced my student experience, and gave me many skills that have been instrumental to my career growth. Through the endowments, I am hoping that other students will also benefit from being a volunteer. I’d be happy if my endowments can help our students' careers and support them in becoming a better version of themselves.”

The Ademola Taiwo Endowed Award and the Olaniyan-Taiwo Endowed Award each reached their $20,000 principal amount target in 2021, and are now ready to give out their first $1,000 student awards in 2022, supporting KPU students who volunteer at KPU or in the community. The Olaniyan-Taiwo Award will give preference to those students who volunteer with Nigerian or African Community Groups.

Waheed has started building a third endowment at KPU, the Taiwo Endowed Scholarship. He has aspirations of joining the Management Team at KPU and also being an instructor. He understands the importance and benefits of student engagement, and will continue to work tirelessly to foster an inclusive environment where student engagement thrives at KPU. Waheed believes that being student-centred is what sets KPU apart from other universities.

“Almost everyone at KPU, from top management to entry-level staff understands that our students are a priority,” he says, “and we all go out of our way to support them.” He feels that KPU’s contribution to the community is rooted in “the uniqueness of our program offerings, the open admission system, and our willingness to change and

adapt our programs to changing market needs.”

As a black person, he has faced barriers and what he terms covert racism, and acknowledges that he had to work really hard for every growth opportunity. But he also feels lucky to be where he is today and the opportunities that he has had through KPU, and is truly grateful for the support of many instructors and colleagues along his journey. He is heartened by the investment that KPU is making in supporting diversity and Indigenous reconciliation through the establishment of new positions and committees and looks forward to increased hiring of BIPOC employees as well as the University investing in career growth opportunities for those employees.

He is excited about the recruitment of black students and new programs to support their transition to KPU and establishing on campus a support system for the unique needs of black students. He looks forward to when there will be more students, and employees, “who look like me.”

KPU would indeed be fortunate to have more students and employees, who not only look like, but are like, Waheed Taiwo!

UPDATE TO DONORS ON KPU’S ACADEMIC PLAN 2023 Launched three years ago with full implementation beginning in early 2019, the KPU Academic Plan 2023 includes 9 strategic goals in the key areas of student success, teaching excellence, accelerating research, next generation international, increasing Indigenous participation, advancing open education research and practices, employability of Trades and Technology apprentices, preparing for incoming K-12 graduates, and graduate studies. Each of the strategic goals is accompanied by 6 to 8 strategies and I am pleased to provide this update of our tremendous progress in working towards our goals in the 2020-2021 academic year.

To promote student success, we imagined the opportunity to enhance online learning for KPU students, and since the conversion to online delivery in March 2020, KPU has truly become a multi-modal delivery institution.

For the Fall 2021 semester we planned a course delivery mix of approximately 65% face-to-face and 35% online in various formats including asynchronous, synchronous, and blended modes. The Teaching and Learning Commons has presented the Level Up: Learn to Teach Online course to over 400 faculty and also provided faculty with access to a suite of new and updated software platforms to enhance video conferencing, ePortfolios, video creation and editing, infographics,

and digital collaboration. We purchased 300 laptops to enable access to online learning for our students and contributed resources for small equipment purchases to assist faculty in the online learning environment.

Our embrace of open educational practices, signifying open, affordable, and equitable education, is now well understood as a core part of KPU’s identity. In the past year our Zero Textbook Credit initiative has saved KPU students another $3 Million in textbook cost savings and we are widely regarded as an international leader in open education.

We are also proud of KPU Complete, a set of specialized supports for students aged 25 years and older, including a dedicated staff Learning Navigator who provides coaching and referrals to appropriate student services.

We continue to make progress in our efforts to increase Indigenous participation and to promote a renewed, authentic approach to Indigenous resurgence and decolonization.

A new Indigenous Community Coordinator position was filled in Spring 2020, this position works closely with KPU’s Future Students Office to support recruiting activities for Indigenous Learners including participation at Indigenous Career and Education Fairs. Soon, we will welcome a new Coordinator, Indigenous Student Transition and Engagement, who will be responsible for

the coordination and delivery of specialized culturally relevant programming that supports the transition and engagement of KPU’s diverse Indigenous student population. The University has recently hired a Special Advisor on Indigenous Leadership, Innovation and Partnerships who reports to the President. Work is underway to update the content and format of KPU’s Indigenous Awareness Modules including their translation to multiple languages. To better prepare our faculty for the classroom, our Teaching and Learning Commons team added an Educational Consultant for Indigenization. This position will support the further development of KPU educators in acquiring competencies related to designing learning experiences and environments that support Indigenization and decolonization of the curriculum. In addition, KPU’s new Foundations in Teaching Excellence program includes a focus on Indigenization within the context of inclusive teaching.

Our determination to build the next generation KPU international has yielded remarkable results. Through innovation, creativity, and process review we have been able to renew our focus on international students and more fully realize the important role they play in our institution and the KPU community. The International Peer Mentor program has continued in every semester since Summer 2020. To date, 1,670 new international students have participated in the program with 103 domestic and international mentors hired and matched with the new students. Changes to our admissions process for international students has reduced the issuing of acceptance letters from up to eight weeks to within 48 hours. There has also been sustained attention paid to diversifying

our international student mix through implementation of a diversification strategy which includes the identification of target markets.

The pandemic had the potential to hamper our efforts to realize aspects of the Academic Plan 2023, however, this has not been our reality. In some ways, the pandemic has accelerated the rate and breadth of change. A total of 83% of the strategies are showing significant progress and are having demonstrable impacts.
