THE LOOP

Fourth World Event On Thursday, October 3, we have the unique opportunity to welcome former adjunct faculty and 1988 alumnus, Mark Volkers, on campus. Mark is an award winning documentary director/producer, professor at Dordt College in Iowa, and former CRWM missionary. He will be here to present his documentary, The Fourth World, the evening of October 3rd. This documentary is a close look into the world of slums, a seemingly hidden people group making up over 1 billion of our population. Take a chance to journey with filmmakers to Guatemala, Kenya and the Philippines to meet slum dwellers. Listen to published experts as they bring understanding to the 'why' of slums, and foreshadow what's going to happen if the world ignores this social powder keg much longer. Mark will be speaking in a luncheon discussion from noon – 1:00pm in the West Dining Hall. If you are not on a meal plan but want to attend, please let Hannah Schierbeek know! He is also presenting in a few classes in the afternoon.

If you’d like to see the film at no cost and participate in the West Michigan premiere, we are having a presentation at Keystone Community Church with registration at 6:30pm and the showing beginning at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 3rd. Registration is required. Seating is limited. Following the presentation, there will be a Q/A opportunity with Mark. If you have an interest in intercultural or multicultural studies, social injustice, film and documentaries, or our Christian duty to respond to this growing need, this would be an awesome opportunity for you to gain knowledge from someone firsthand. Information about the film can be found here: http://www.fourthworldfilm.com/ Register for the event now: http://www.kuyper.edu/TheFourthWorld/ The Fourth World – West Michigan premiere is presented as a service to the community as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of Kuyper College. Let’s welcome Mark in true Kuyper fashion!

Blood Drive Results Last Wednesday, Michigan Blood came in for our first blood drive of the school year. Here are the results from that drive: 31 people signed in 23 units collected 9 first time donors Thank you to everyone who donated, especially first time donors! Michigan Blood told us: “I love the number of first time donors and as always, we enjoy being at Kuyper College and appreciate your support!” The next blood drive will be on Wednesday, December 4th, so mark your calendars now!

For us college students there are often not enough hours in the day. Take this advice from Clinton Kelly, “I realized this week that I just cannot do it all. So I will choose to do what I can fabulously.” You might not be able to accomplish all that you would like to in a week, but you can do what you are able to the best of your ability and to the glory of God!

World News Attack on Westgate Shopping Centre: Kenyan Government Seeks Answers By Emily Gafford

Government officials in Kenya, along with officials from several other countries including the United States, are sifting through the horrific aftermath of the terrorist attack in Nairobi where 67 people lost their lives. It is believed that a group of 10-15 men and women attacked the Westgate Shopping Centre on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a four day siege. As of now it is not certain to government officials the nationality of each of the attackers (although it is believed that the nationalities include the U.S., Finland, Kenyan, Somalian Canada and the UK) however, it is known that they were part of a militant group affiliated with Al Queda. This specific group is known as the Al Shabaab. The attack on Saturday was due to Kenyan occupation in Somalia. Al Shabaab members warned Kenya that if they did not leave, there would be an attack. Because of this warning, the Al Shabaab members feel justified in the taking of innocent lives so needlessly. As the investigation has continued it is believed that “The White Widow” (Samantha Lewthwaite) was involved with this attack. Kenyan officials will continue to seek answers as well as justice in this difficult situation.

“‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” -Revelation 21:4-5
