U.S. Government: Closed By Shayla Newman

On October 1st the US began a partial government shutdown because the two houses of Congress could not agree on a new budget. This shutdown started after Republicans (who control the House of Representatives) refused to approve a budget, saying they would only do so if President Obama's healthcare reform law were delayed or stripped of funding. A more pressing matter is that the Republicans also refuse to approve an increase in the US debt limit unless it is accompanied by “significant spending cuts and other policy concessions” (BBC) which could cause the government to default.

The clearest way to state what is happening is that Republicans are using the budget deadlines to gain political leverage for all the policies they do not like. Why are they so willing to do this? Because congress is still getting paid. Congress members are getting paid anywhere from $168,000-$215,700 per year depending on their rank.

audience still sleeps.” ~ John Lennon

What does a government shutdown even mean? “Staff deemed ‘essential’ to government operations continue to work unpaid, whilst those who are ‘non-essential’ remain at home on unpaid leave” (BBC Reporter Amber Dawson). It means that: 

700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave.

Initially National parks, museums, federal buildings, and government services had been shut down indefinitely (some are up and running again).

Pension and veterans’ benefits have been delayed.

Initially death benefits paid to families of soldiers recently killed abroad were suspended but were restored after a public outcry.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies that typically deal with tracking disease and inspecting food remain mostly closed.

National Institutes of Health have had to suspend research.

Some good news: air-traffic controllers, active military, and border security guards are deemed essential and are still working. Teachers, firefighters, doctors, and workers like them will continue to be paid as they’re paid for by individual state governments. While all this is happening the language of the officials in the talks have consisted of the words “winning” and “losing”. There are no “winners” in a government shutdown and to use people’s livelihoods as a bargaining chip for policies that one doesn’t like is immature and unacceptable behavior for both Republican and Democratic government officials. The U.S. President and Vice-President will be having meetings with congressional leaders in both parties to try and work things out, but how long will we have to go without a government, no one knows. Articles from bbc.co.uk were used in researching for this article and if you would like more information feel free to visit their website. Note: The government Shutdown has ended after 18 days of being closed. Thankfully all Federal employees are able to head back to work!
