12 killed in 24 hours in Gaza GAZA CITY: Israeli tank fire killed a Palestinian in Gaza early yesterday, taking to 12 the overall toll from the deadliest 24 hours since a devastating war more than two years ago. A truce declared by Palestinian armed groups in the enclave unravelled even before it could take hold as militants fired dozens of projectiles into southern Israel and the military retaliated. Hamas put security forces and emergency services in Gaza on 24hour alert amid the escalating violence and despite international calls for an end to hostilities. But a senior Israeli security official also said the Islamist group ruling the Gaza Strip had asked for a ceasefire. “The political branch of Hamas has sent a message asking for an Israeli ceasefire” in exchange for a halt to Palestinian attacks, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. He said Israeli operations would continue for as long as Israel felt “its people cannot lead normal lives” because of the threat of Palestinian attack. He also indicated that Defence Minister Ehud Barak had indefinitely postponed a trip to Washington because of the gravity of the situation. Earlier yesterday, around 30 mortar rounds or rockets fired from Gaza hit Israel, without causing damage GAZA: Palestinian mourners carry the body of Hamas militant Mohammed Awaja during his funeral in or casualties, military radio said. KUWAIT/TEHRAN/MANAMA: Iran expelled three Kuwaiti diplomats yesterday in a tit-for-tat move after Kuwait vowed to kick out three Iranian envoys accused of having links to an active spy ring in the state. Kuwaiti e-paper AlAan said Al-Arabiya TV reported that the Iranian foreign ministry has given the Kuwaiti ambassador a ten-day notice for three members of the diplomatic staff to leave. Iran has denied having any connection with the espionage network. Earlier yesterday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Iran is prepared to diplomatically “resolve” differences with its Arab neighbours as tensions simmer between Tehran and the Gulf monarchies.”If there are some mistrusts (between Iran and the Arab countries), we can sit down and resolve them through diplomatic channels,” Salehi said during a press conference translated into English by Iran’s Press TV channel. Relations between the Islamic republic and its neighbours have been strained in recent weeks, as Tehran insists on supporting the uprisings in the Arab world. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have accused Iran of plotting against their security, a charge rejected by Tehran. “Our official policy is non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries,” Salehi said. “We have only condemned the use of violence against defenceless people. This is our stance,” said Salehi, insisting that the “legitimate demands” of the people in the region should be heeded by their governments. Iran has severely condemned the deadly crackdown of Bahrain against its Shiite opposition as well as a decision by its Sunni monarch to ask Saudi-led GCC troops to be Continued on Page 14
