Basics

Die Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen haben sich im Verlauf von sechs Jahrzehnten zu einer der angesehensten kulturellen Veranstaltungen der Welt entwickelt – ein Ort, an dem große Namen wie Agnès Varda, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Kluge oder Werner Herzog zum ersten Mal ihre Filme präsentiert haben. Es ist das älteste Kurzfilmfestival der Welt. Die Kurzfilmtage genießen aber auch einen hervorragenden Ruf in der Kunstszene, die kurze Filme und Videos für sich entdeckt hat.

Auch heute bekannte bildende Künstler wie Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Christian Boltanski oder Pipilotti Rist haben in Oberhausen ihre ersten Filme vorgestellt. In diesem Spannungsfeld zwischen Film und Kunst sowie Geschichte und Avantgarde bewegen sich die Kurzfilmtage schon lange auch mit einem einzigartigen Filmarchiv und einem nicht-gewerblichen Kurzfilmverleih, dessen Bestände jährlich erweitert werden, um herausragende aktuelle Kurzfilme über das Festival hinaus für Kinos und alternative Spielstätten verfügbar zu machen.

Auf den folgenden Seiten möchten wir Ihnen unsere 38 Neuankäufe aus dem Festival 2018 vorstellen. Aus diesen neuen Arbeiten haben wir fünf Programme für Sie bereits zusammengestellt.

Sie können sich also auch ihre eigene Auswahl zusammenstellen, auch aus Arbeiten der vergangenen Jahre, oder mit uns zusammen Kurzfilmprogramme, etwa zu bestimmten Ländern, Genres oder konkreten Themen, entwickeln. Wir unterstützen und beraten Sie hierbei gerne. Sie können aber Kurzfilme auch als Vorfilme einzeln programmieren. Wenn Sie dies regelmäßig tun, unterstützen wir das durch einen neuen Mengenrabatt. Zahlen und Fakten Facts and Figures

In the course of six decades, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has developed into one of the most highly acclaimed cultural events worldwide – a place where renowned figures like Agnès Varda, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Kluge and Werner Herzog first showed their films. Oberhausen is the world’s oldest short film festival and in the meantime also enjoys an excellent standing in the art scene, where short films and videos play an increasingly important role today. Prominent visual artists including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Christian Boltanski and Pipilotti Rist presented their first films in Oberhausen. The festival has long spanned the worlds of film and art, of tradition and avant-garde as well with its unique film archive and non-commercial film distribution. The holdings are augmented year after year in order to make outstanding short films available to cinemas and alternative venues beyond the dates of the festival.

On the following pages we would like to present to you our 38 new acquisitions. The most interesting works from the last festival have been compiled into five ready-to-screen programmes. One more programme contains older works. Our films are available in DCP, Blu-ray or DVD format. Please note that, aside from the curated programmes, a number of other engaging works can now be rented. You can put together your own selection, even choosing works from older distribution catalogues, or let us help you compose a short film programme, for example on particular film countries, genres or themes. We are always happy to offer you our advice and assistance.

But you can also programme individual short films as supporting films. If you do this on a regular basis, we will help you out with a new bulk discount. Give it a try!

Internationaler Wettbewerb International Competition

Dieses Programm mit einigen der interessantesten Arbeiten des Internationalen Wettbewerbs 2018 thematisiert Erinnerung sowie persönliche oder politische Abschiede. Während in Murata Tomoyasus Puppenanimation, die vom Tsunami 2011 erzählt, Gegenwart und Vergangenheit immer wieder neue Verbindungen eingehen, erforscht im Foto-Film “Season of Goodbyes“ ein Brief an eine geliebte Person Verbundenheit und Trennung, die mit Leben und Verlust einhergehen.

Naomi van Niekerk dagegen erinnert ihre Mutter zwischen Rotwein und Puccini. Kiri Dalena lässt die Geschichte eines philippinischen Rebellen, der vor Jahren ertrunken ist, erneut aufleben, indem sie als aktiv engagierte Bürgerin selbst ins Wasser geht.

In Anssi Kasitonnis märchenhaftem Schelmenstück kommt der Quatsch zu seinem Recht. Am Ende verbindet der Brasilianer Lobo Mauro die Amtsenthebung Dilma Rousseffs, Arbeitsreformen und die legendäre 1:7 Niederlage bei der Fußball-WM 2014 zu einer bitterbösen Bestandsaufnahme der aktuellen Lage der Nation.

This programme, which includes some of the most interesting works from the 2018 International Competition, focuses on remembrance and personal or political farewells. While Murata Tomoyasu‘s puppet animation about the 2011 tsunami brings together present and past in a constant series of new combinations, the photo film “Season of Goodbyes” features a letter to a beloved person that explores connectedness and separation that accompany by life and loss. Naomi van Niekerk, on the other hand, remembers her mother between red wine and Puccini. Kiri Dalena revives the story of a Philippine rebel who drowned years ago by entering the water herself as an actively committed citizen. In Anssi Kasitonni‘s fairytale-like, picaresque work, nonsense comes into its own. At the end, the Brazilian Lobo Mauro combines the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, labour reforms and the legendary 1:7 defeat at the 2014 football World Cup to create a bitter and angry assessment of the current state of the nation.

Deutscher Wettbewerb German Competition

Bürgertum, globalisierte Mittelschicht und Tourismus stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Programms mit Arbeiten des Deutschen Wettbewerbs 2018. Während Willy Hans in ruhigen Schwarz-Weiß-Bildern, aber mit leisen Anklängen an den Horrorfilm, davon erzählt, wie eine bildungsbürgerliche Kleinfamilie langsam zerfällt, zeigt uns Yannick Spiess Alltag und Pflichtbewusstsein einer wohlhabenden Schweizerin. Dazwischen lässt Nikita Diakur im Hof einer Plattenbausiedlung die Puppen rabiat tanzen. „Beyond Beach“ imaginiert gelassen und frei nach Michel Houellebecq Lethargie und Gleichgültigkeit westlicher Hedonisten an den Stränden Lateinamerikas als bunten Tagtraum.

Bei Judith Hopf trottet ein schlanker Wohnturm aus dem Bild, wenn es ihm zu langweilig wird. Und in „Bigger Than Life“ schließlich, dem Gewinner des 3sat-Förderpreises, macht die Musik den Ton des Films. Sie stiftet die spielerische Struktur dieser Vermessung eines chauvinistischen Stadtprojekts, das Skopje neben Rom und Athen auf die vordersten Plätze der europäischen Geschichte katapultieren soll.

This programme with works from the 2018 German Competition centres on civil society, the globalised middle class and tourism. While Willy Hans, in calm black-and-white pictures but with subtle allusions to horror film, recounts how a small family with educated middle-class principles gradually falls apart, Yannick Spiess shows us the everyday routine and dedication to duty of a wealthy Swiss woman. In between, Nikita Diakur has dolls dance furiously in the courtyard of a prefab housing estate. In a free adaptation of Michel Houellebecq, “Beyond Beach” serenely imagines the lethargy and indifference of Western hedonists on Latin American beaches as a colourful daydream. In the work by Judith Hopf, a slender apartment tower trots out of the picture whenever things get too boring for it. And finally, in “Bigger Than Life”, the winner of the 3sat Promotional Award, music sets the tone of the film. It provides the playful structure for this survey of a chauvinist urban project that is intended to catapult Skopje up among the principal arenas of European history alongside Rome and Athens.

MuVi-Preis MuVi Award

Die Kurzfilmtage führten 1999 mit dem MuVi den weltweit ersten Festivalpreis für deutsche Musikvideos ein. Hintergrund war die Beobachtung, dass Musikvideos sich mehr und mehr von der reinen Abbild- und Werbefunktion emanzipiert hatten und zur eigenständigen visuellen Form geworden waren. Inzwischen hat sich gezeigt, dass Musikvideos in der Tat ein unabhängiges Kurzfilm-Genre geworden sind, das auch den Niedergang seines Geburtshelfers, des Musikfernsehens, überlebt hat. Dieses Programm präsentiert alle elf Arbeiten, die 2018 für den MuViPreis nominiert wurden.

Den 1. Preis gewann Oliver Pietsch für seine gleichermaßen verzückende und verstörende Found Footage Arbeit „Limerence“ (Yves Tumor). Duschszenen im Film entführen uns hier in das fremdartige Herz des Kinos. „Damenbartblick“ (Schlammpeitziger), ausgezeichnet mit dem 2.

Preis, zeigt dagegen die Möglichkeiten auf, die das Internet für künstlerische Begegnungen über große Entfernungen und Grenzen hinweg öffnet.

Den MuVi Online-Publikumspreis erhielt Jakob Grunert für „Copyshop“ (Romano).

In 1999 Oberhausen introduced the world’s first festival prize for music videos made in Germany. The impulse to create this award arose out of the observation that music videos had increasingly managed to emancipate themselves from their purely illustrative and advertising function, transforming themselves into a completely independent form of visualisation. Today, music videos have proven themselves to be an independent short film genre that even managed to survive the decline of its midwife, music television. This programme gathers together all eleven works nominated for the 2018 MuVi Award.

The first prize was won by Oliver Pietsch for his enchanting yet disconcerting found footage work “Limerence” (Yves Tumor). Shower scenes on film transport us here into the strange heart of cinema. “Damenbartblick” (Schlammpeitziger), which was awarded the 2nd prize, shows the opportunities that the internet offers for artistic encounters over great distances and across borders.

Artist Film

Unser diesjähriges Artist Film-Programm versammelt einige der interessantesten Filmemacher, die sich derzeit im Spannungsfeld zwischen Film und Kunst bewegen. Bei Jayne Parker wachsen Magnolienzweige in den leeren Hohlraum eines Cellos herein, während das Musikstück »Blues in B« gespielt wird. In »Patterns of the Conquerors« ist die Distanz zum gefilmten Material entscheidend, wenn Experten der Design-Geschichte ein Buch mit diversen Mustern südasiatischen Textilhandwerks des 19. Jahrhunderts kommentieren. Bei Dimitri Venkov werden Geschichte und Raum auf den Kopf gestellt, um die intergalaktische Vision einer Stadt zu schaffen. This year‘s Artist Film programme brings together some of the most interesting filmmakers currently working at the interface between film and art. In the work by Jayne Parker, magnolia branches grow into the empty cavity of a cello while the piece “Blues in B” is played. In “Patterns of the Conquerors”, the distance to the filmed material is the key when experts in design history comment on a book containing various patterns used in 19th-century South Asian textile handicrafts.

With Dimitri Venkov, history and space are turned upside down to create the intergalactic vision of a city. Jens Pecho examines film sequences in which stunt artists met their death during filming. Finally, war and traumatisation are the big themes of the visually stunning and sensuous work by Chikako Yamashiro that concludes the programme. Six films in which patterns and textures repeatedly play a special role.

In dieser Auswahl der Preisträger des Festivals 2018 entführen uns in Oliver Pietschs außergewöhnlicher Found Footage Arbeit zunächst Duschszenen im Film in das fremdartige Herz des Kinos. Bei Eva Stefani verdichtet sich eine ziellose Fahrt durch Athen zu einer einzigartigen und atmosphärischen Vision der Stadt. „Um filme para Ehuana“ beobachtet das Leben einer Yanomami-Gemeinschaft im brasilianischen Regenwald. In dieser Begegnung erinnert uns die Kraft jeder kleinen Geste daran, dass wir uns inmitten des Waldes und seiner Bewohner befinden. Alexandra Gulea porträtiert in melancholischen Bildern und mit lakonischen Voice-Over ein verfallenes rumänisches Industriegebiet, in dem Mütter ihre Kinder zurückgelassen haben, um im Westen zu arbeiten.

Der epische „Magnificent Obsession“ schließlich erzählt anhand des zeitgenössischen China von der Suche nach Erkenntnis und dem Verhältnis des Einzelnen und der Gemeinschaft und wie der Einzelne in deren Wirklichkeit leben kann.

In this selection of the prizewinners at the 2018 Festival, shower scenes in Oliver Pietsch‘s exceptional found footage work first transport us into the strange heart of cinema.

In Eva Stefani‘s film, an aimless drive through Athens intensifies into a unique and atmospheric vision of the city. “Um filme para Ehuana” observes the life of a Yanomami community in the Brazilian rainforest.

In this encounter, the power of every small gesture reminds us that we are in the midst of the forest and its denizens. In melancholy images and with a laconic voice-over, Alexandra Gulea portrays a decrepit Romanian industrial area in which mothers have left their children behind to work in the West.

Finally, the epic “Magnificent Obsession” uses the example of contemporary China to tell about the quest for enlightenment, and about the relationship between the individual and the community and how the individual can live in its reality.

„Made in Germany 2: Stadtleben“, zweiter Teil unserer Serie mit den besten deutschen Kurzfilmen der letzten zehn Jahre, wirft einen neuen Blick auf die Stadt und ihre Architektur. Im Zentrum des Programms steht der Hauptgewinner des Deutschen Wettbewerbs 2015 „Schicht“, der die persönliche Familiengeschichte der Regisseurin mit einem Portrait der Stadt Salzgitter verwebt.

Zwischen Analyse und Imagination folgt der Film dem Strom freigelegter Geschichten. Kerstin Honeit lädt in der Rohbaukulisse des Berliner Stadtschlosses Bauarbeiter zum Kaffeekranz für eine groteske Aufführung von Abriss und Aufbau nationalstaatlicher Mythen. Marian Mayland dagegen erinnert an einen abgerissenen Wohnhausblock in Manchester, indem er dokumentarisches Material mit Ausschnitten aus kulturellen Gegenentwürfen der frühen Technound Acidhouse Szene furios vermischt. “Made in Germany 2: Inner City Life” the second part of our series with the best German short films of the past ten years, takes a fresh look at the city and its architecture. At the centre of this programme is the winner of the 2015 German competition, “Shift”, which weaves together the director’s personal family history with a portrait of the city of Salzgitter. The film combines analysis and imagination as it follows the stream of revealed histories. Kerstin Honeit invites construction workers to a coffee party among the skeleton construction work of the Berlin City Palace for a grotesque staging of the demolition and reconstruction of nationalistic myths. Marian Mayland, on the other hand, recalls a demolished apartment block in Manchester by furiously combining documentary material with excerpts from cultural counterprojects of the early techno and acid house scene.

And Maximilian Villwock shows us how love in nocturnal Berlin turns into a power struggle when the ego takes the upper hand. Finally, “Please Say Something” animates the city in a way you have never seen and sets off an enigmatic and futuristic fireworks display of images about the relationship between a cat and a mouse in the internet era. All these works were festival favourites in Oberhausen and elsewhere.

Die Kurzfilmtage kaufen oder leihen Filme aus dem Festival für das von ihnen verwaltete Archiv der Stadt Oberhausen. Die Kurzfilmtage haben für die Werke nicht-gewerbliche Vorführrechte erworben. Die Werke müssen in sämtlichen mit ihrer Aufführung zusammenhängenden Publikationen unter dem Titel „Aus dem Archiv der Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen“ oder mit dem „Archivfilm“-Signet angekündigt werden.

The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen acquires or rents films shown at its festival for the archive of the City of Oberhausen, which it also manages. The Festival has obtained non-commercial rights for public screening of these titles. All public announcements of any form and in any format in connection with the public screening of these films must be made under the title “From the Archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen”, or include our “Archive Film” logo.

Rental fee per public screening from distribution list (films from 2014–2018): programme up to 80 min. € 180

up to 100 min. € 200

MuVi Award € 150 per title up to 20 min. € 40

exceeding 20 min. € 60 Regular loans (10 or more titles per year) of short films as supporting films: per title up to 20 min. € 25 Archive films (up to 2013) will be charged at an extra 50%.

Zusätzlich werden eine Kopienbearbeitungsgebühr von € 10 (für Einzelfilme oder vorhandene Programme) bzw. € 20 (für neu kuratierte Programme) sowie Transportkosten und ggf. 7% MWST in Rechnung gestellt. Bei der regelmäßigen, rabattierten Einzelfilmausleihe fallen keine Kopienbearbeitungsgebühren an.

A copy processing fee of € 10 will be charged for individual films and existing programmes, and € 20 for newly curated programmes, along with transport costs and 7% VAT where applicable. No copy-processing fees are charged for the regular, discounted loan of single films.
