Founded in 1962, the American Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Leon Botstein have continuously cultivated and advanced its essential mission to expand orchestral music as a vital force in American culture and education. This program highlights the different forms of expression and musical languages that emerged in the 1920s, including new elements of dance, theater, and jazz.

Brandee Younger is a Grammy-nominated harpist making waves for becoming the first Black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “ Beautiful Is Black ” at the 2022 Grammy ceremony. Collaborating with artists such as Beyonce, John Legend, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, and more, Younger demonstrates her ability to seamlessly inject the harp into arrangements and venues where it has historically been overlooked.

One of the most engaging and successful ensembles in the history of Celtic music, Cherish the Ladies have shared timeless Irish traditions with audiences worldwide for over thirty years. In their Celtic Christmas program, the Ladies put their signature mark on classic carols such as “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night,” in arrangements that highlight the group’s unique Celtic instrumentation, beautiful harmonies, and spectacular step dancing.

The Queens College Choral Society presents a winter concert featuring Margaret Evan Bonds’ The Ballad of the Brown King and Handel’s Coronation Anthems. This beautiful cantata, with text by Langston Hughes tells the Nativity tale from the perspective of Balthazar, the African king. Founded by the late Taiwanese-American choreographer Na-Ni Chen, the cross-cultural Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company blends Chinese cultural elegance with New York’s modern dance spirit. Their ground-breaking works explore ancient legends reflecting current issues and contemporary dances influenced by Chen’s multicultural experiences in New York. Join us for a program showcasing Chen’s distinctive cross-cultural style and diverse influences, including traditional Lunar New Year dances that bring ancient traditions to life.

This family-friendly concert invites you to embark on a captivating journey through the rich history of how Afro Latin music was born out of the New York City melting pot of the 1950s and 1960s, leading to the birth of funk and hip-hop through the lens of Latin music icons Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and more. Get ready to groove to the infectious rhythms of Steven Salcedo’s Latin-Soul Group, a high-energy collective that features a blend of horns, percussionists, and vocalists. With jazz as the anchoring foundation, Pérez’s Global jazz music is a blend of Panamanian roots, Latin American folk music, West African rhythms, European impressionism – promoting music as a borderless and multidimensional bridge between all people. Pérez will be joined by Adam Cruz on drums and longtime collaborator John Patitucci on bass.

It’s a wonderful world at the Louis Armstrong House Museum. The house on 107 th Street in Corona, Queens is a gem frozen in time. Just across from the House, the newly opened Louis Armstrong Center is a permanent haven for the 60,000-piece archive of Louis and Lucille Armstrong. Inside, you’ll find a 75-seat venue offering performances, lectures, films, and educational experiences.
