A letter from the VP Recruitment Programming Jaylinn

Dear Potential New Members,
Nguyen
I am so happy that you are considering going through our Fall Formal Recruitment Process! Going through recruitment was one of the best decisions I made when entering college. Not only did it help me develop professionally and academically, recruitment also gave me the opportunity to find a forever home full of women who share similar values to my own. While I know this process can be hard and draining on many women, do not get discouraged throughout the week! You are all so valued within our community and just know that everything happens for a reason even if you can’t see that reason right away. The biggest piece of advice that I can offer towards recruitment is to truly be yourself. Being your authentic self is what will lead you to a chapter you will enjoy and not feel like you need to put on a persona to be a part of. Remember that there is no wrong choice when going through recruitment. This is your chance to make the choices that will make you happy! I am genuinely so excited for you all to experience this and cannot wait to meet you all at orientation!
Sincerely,
Jaylinn Nguyen Panhellenic VP of Recruitment Programming

What is Panhellenic?
PHA is advised and governed by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), which was founded in 1902 and is the umbrella organization for all 26 major (inter)national sororities. Every member who joins a chapter is considered a member of the Panhellenic Association. The founding of PHA sparked a campus-wide increase in university involvement. Two years after PHA was founded, the fraternity men of the University of Kansas followed suit and founded their own Panhellenic Association in 1907, which was later renamed the Interfraternity Council (IFC). The Panhellenic organizations also inspired non-Greek affiliated students to form their own self-governing organizations. The University of Kansas Panhellenic Association is an inclusive community that fosters a sense of belonging for members from all backgrounds and beliefs
As a new member, you’ll embark on an exciting journey as you get acclimated to both your sorority and university life. Each chapter offers a unique new member program designed to support your transition into college and sorority involvement. Through these programs, you'll gain a deeper understanding of your chapter’s history and traditions, while also developing the skills and connections that will help you thrive in your college experience.

The Panhellenic Association was founded on the principle of exceptional scholarship. Each sorority at KU recognizes the importance of academic success and provides members with a network and services to help all members succeed.
our values Scholarship Leadership Friendship Service
Joining the Panhellenic community offers members the opportunity to foster friendships throughout their years on campus. Through sisterhood events and bonding, the women many meet in the Panhellenic chapters will become friends that last a lifetime.
Leadership opportunities are endless in the Panhellenic community. Each sorority provides an opportunity for members to experience different leadership roles within the chapters and on campus through student organizations.

Service in the Panhellenic Association is demonstrated through our philanthropic efforts with different organizations. Once PNMs step foot on the KU campus, they get the privilege to serve national organizations and local communities.

Recruitment Counselors

Recruitment is a special experience to build connections, meet new people, and find lifelong sisters. Although special, it can still be nervewracking, which is perfectly normal! Recruitment counselors, also known as Rho Gammas, will be there for PNMs during the ups and downs of recruitment. They are current members of our Panhellenic chapters who have disassociated themselves from their organization in order to remain unbiased, confidential, and a neutral resource during the recruitment process. The recruitment counselors have been thoroughly interviewed, selected, and trained to be a strong and unbiased support system for PNMs.
The Recruitment Counselors are so excited to meet our potential new members on move-in day. Once PNMs register for the recruitment process over the summer, they will be contac via text by one of our recruitment counselors answer any questions they have leading up t the week!

fall formal recruitment schedule
august9 -august16 th th
Move-in & Orientation
August 9
All Potential New Members will check in and move into their residence halls on this day. PNMs who live off-campus will still check in with Panhellenic at a designated location! Recruitment Counselors will meet with PNMs later in the day to introduce themselves and bring PNMs to orientation. During orientation, PNMs will hear from the Panhellenic President about expectations and recruitment week details. Families of PNMs will have a separate and optional orientation during the same time.
What to expect...
This is going to be a busy day! PNMs should dress comfortably or in athleisure. Lots of information will be shared, so PNMs should come feeling their best and ready to pay attention!

open house
August 10-11
These events are spread across two days. PNMs will meet with all 11 chapters during this round. This round is a meet and greet, with short 25 minute conversations with chapter members. Open House consists of a lot of "small talk.”
What to expect...
Today is the first day of recruitment! PNMs will travel to chapters with their recruitment counselor and their recruitment group for the week. This is the only round where you will travel with them so be sure to make note of where chapters are and how to navigate the bus system.
What do I wear?
PNMs should wear their open house shirts that they will receive on move in day. They can choose their bottoms and to dress it up or down any way they’d like! Shirts may be cut or styled however the PNM chooses.

philanthropy August 12-13
For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is eight. These 30-minute events are based around values, service, and the chapter's philanthropy and volunteer opportunities!
What to expect...
On this day conversations get more detailed. PNMs should ask chapters about their philanthropy and try and find which one they connect the best with! PNMs can learn a lot about chapters and their mission this day.
What do I wear?
The theme for Philanthropy round is Game Day! PNMs should come dressed in their favorite KU Game Day outfit.

sisterhood August 14
For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is five. These 40-minute events will center around friendship and daily life as a chapter member. Chapters will also host house tours on this day and will be giving financial transparency presentations regarding their member dues.
What to expect...
Sisterhood is a longer event. PNMs should ask about social events, living in the chapter house, friendships and more. Anything they need to know before preferencing, make sure they ask!
What do I wear?
The attire for sisterhood is similar to Sunday brunch. This could be nice shorts and a blouse, a dress, or a skirt set. Many PNMs choose to dress up a little more on this day!

preference August 15
The final event of the week, Preference, is the longest round with 60minute events. On this day PNMs can visit up to two chapters. Preference round is very sentimental to chapters, especially the senior member classes. After their last Preference round, PNMs will make their final decision.
What to expect...
PNMs should ask questions and be thinking about their decision before going to preference. PNMs should take their time and make the decision that best benefits them.
What do I wear?
The attire for Preference is similar to a Summer Wedding. This will be the dressiest outfit. This can be a dress, pantsuit, skirt set, etc.

bid day
August 16
The last day of recruitment when potential new members receive invitations (bids) to join chapters. Recruitment Counselors will be ready for all PNMs and communicate next steps to the bid reveal.
What to expect...
Bid Day will start with recruitment counselors bringing PNMs to the bid reveal. PNMs then open the bid and run to their chapter group. They will then be driven to the chapter facilities for their celebration!
What do I wear?
All chapters will provide their new members with shirts. Choose a neutral bottom, preferably shorts or a skirt. PNMs will be outside this day so dress for the weather!

Live-In Obligations
Live-in obligations are the chapter requirements for the length of time members are required to live in their chapter facility. Traditionally, this requirement starts in their second year of membership. Each Panhellenic chapter at KU has their own specific live-in requirements.

letters of recommendation
Recommendations are letters or statements from a sorority alumna recommending a Potential New Member for membership. The alumna member will provide a brief description of the prospective member and explain why that woman would be an asset to the specific chapter. It is also important to note that a recommendation does not guarantee a Potential New Member an invitation to events during recruitment week, nor does it guarantee membership in that sorority.
For more information regarding specific chapters, visit kupanhellenic.com/lettersofrec.

legacies
A legacy is typically a Potential New Member who is the sister, daughter, or granddaughter of an initiated member of a panhellenic sorority. Being a legacy does NOT guarantee membership into a sorority. Legacy status can be indicated when registering online. Please have the alumna member send a legacy information form and letter of recommendation directly to her sorority, as sororities will need to verify the information PNMs list.
For more information on chapters' legacy policies, visit kupanhellenic.com/legacies.
continuousopenrecruitment
Continuous Open Recruitment, also known as COR, is an informal recruitment process that will begin immediately after Bid Day of Fall Formal Recruitment. Continuous Open Recruitment will end on stop day of the fall semester and resume on the first day of the spring semester. Anyone is eligible for COR if they are a current full time student at the University of Kansas and have not signed an MRABA and turned down a bid since the last formal recruitment.
If Fall Formal Recruitment does not work out, COR is another great option. During COR, both chapters and potential new members have the opportunity to reach out to each other. COR consists of informal “dates'' such as getting coffee. The Panhellenic Association also puts on tabling events called “Meet the Chapters”, where Potential New Members can come and meet chapters at a structured event and go from there! Not every chapter participates in COR. Chapters must be below campus total to be eligible to participate which means until after Bid Day, it is uncertain which chapters will participate.

As a Panhellenic community, we work towards a constant goal of making recruitment and the sorority experience as equitable and accessible as possible. We know that barriers may be in the way of joining the Panhellenic community, and we are always looking for ways to go around them or break them down.
KU Panhellenic offers many opportunities to overcome barriers that may prevent a student from experiencing Fall Formal Recruitment, such as PNM registration scholarships, SW 301 scholarships and an accessibility team that can help work to give PNMs accommodations that they need.
KU Panhellenic is committed to making Fall Formal Recruitment an accessible environment and will work to support PNMs as best as possible.
For more information or questions, contact kuphadiversity@gmail.com or tpullen@ku.edu
frequentlyaskedquestions
What does recruitment look like if I live off campus?
Recruitment will look the same! Instead of meeting in a common space in your dorm, you will meet at a location on campus which will be organized by your Recruitment Counselor prior. Do I need letters of recommendation?
While letters of recommendation give chapters a chance to know you before recruitment starts, it does not give anyone an advantage or guaranteed return to the chapter. Do sororities haze?
No, our SFL community has a strict no hazing policy. No sororities on campus participate in hazing and if they did you would be able to report it to an SFL advisor or online right away! No sorority will make you do something that you do not feel comfortable with!
Do I need a physical resume to hand out to chapters?
You will submit a resume when you register for recruitment that chapters will have access to in order to get to know you before recruitment starts! What do you talk about during recruitment?

The conversations can vary between recruiters and PNMs. As a PNM you get to dictate where conversations flow. Open house is typically get-to-know-you conversations and as the rounds get longer, conversations have the opportunity to get deeper! Feel free to talk to recruiters about whatever you feel comfortable with! This is the chapters’ chance to get to know you and learn more about who you are so be authentic to yourself!
for recruitment staying healthy
Eat well! What you use to fuel your body matters. Be sure to make each meal balanced and fuel up with snacks throughout the week.
Sleep well! You will be up early in the mornings and late at night. Do what you can to get the best night’s sleep possible, you’ll thank yourself by the end of the week. Drink water! The Kansas heat can definitely get to you if you aren’t well hydrated. Carry water with you when you can! Take a deep breath! Your mental health is so important to take care of during recruitment. Take time to journal, meditate or do whatever helps you to feel at peace.

sw 301 course
Panhellenic new members are required to enroll in SW 301, a class that will set them up for success in college during their first semester by teaching them the basics of bystander intervention. It is an expectation that new members take this course within the first year of their membership. PNMs have the option to take it for credit or no credit. The Panhellenic Association also offers SW scholarships for members to apply for after they have completed the course! To enroll for this Fall, just speak with an academic advisor during New Student Orientation session.
