We've all seen the movies and TikToks. We know that sororities are filled with enthusiastic members wearing matching t-shirts, living together in beautiful houses.
We are so excited for you to experience firsthand how the Panhellenic experience at KU exceeds expectations, smashes stereotypes, and provides a community unlike any other - one of support, opportunity, belonging, and personal development that continues well beyond the college experience. The Panhellenic Association (PHA) is just one of the four governing councils at the University of Kansas.
PHA was founded in the spring of 1905 with the purpose of increasing the influence of sororities in college life, improving the relationships between the members of different chapters, and ensuring dignified methods of recruiting, pledging and initiation. Today, our campus has 11 recognized chapters that strive for excellence in the four founding pillars of Leadership, Scholarship, Friendship and Service.
c o m e ABOUT US
The University of Kansas Panhellenic Association is an inclusive community which encourages diversity and inclusion of members from all types of backgrounds and beliefs. As a new member, you will experience many new things while getting acclimated with your sorority and KU. Each chapter has a different program specifically designed for new members to help transition them into sorority and college life New members will learn about the history and traditions of their chapters, as well as skills that will make for an easy transition into college life
Kansas Panhellenic
04FRIENDSHIP CORE VALUES 03SERVICE 02LEADERSHIP 01SCHOLARSHIP
SCHOLARSHIP
Panhellenic organizations were founded on the principle of exceptional scholarship, and each sorority at KU recognizes the importance of scholastic success. Going Panhellenic provides members with an invaluable network when seeking employment and career opportunities through alumni The average sorority and fraternity life GPA has been higher than the average university GPA for 30 years.
LEADERSHIP
Leadership opportunities are endless within the Panhellenic community Each chapter provides opportunities to experience different roles in a variety of areas and skill sets. Sorority and fraternity life is a direct springboard into campus involvement. This includes student government, special interest organizations, honors societies, homecoming, university ambassador programs, preprofessional organizations, and more
SERVICE
Service and philanthropy events at KU demonstrate that Panhellenic members' interests and concerns extend far beyond the constraints of their own chapters. Sororities give back to the community by sponsoring events throughout the year that benefit different causes These members raise money and donate their time to both their national philanthropies and the local community
FRIENDSHIP
Joining a sorority or fraternity provides members an opportunity to foster lifelong friendships and countless memories through a "home away from home" environment
Chapters host sisterhood and social events for members in the chapter to bond and build relationships as members. Throughout the year, chapters participate in a variety of events on campus and host events between chapters to build relationships and get to know members of other organizations in the sorority and fraternity community All of these events help members build friendships and relationships that extend beyond college and serve as a foundation and network for the rest of their life. Relationships continue to be fostered and created following graduation because of opportunities provided to alumni members of sororities and fraternities

RHO GAMMAS
Recruitment is a special experience to build connections, meet new people, and find your lifelong sisters. Although it is special, it can still be nerve-wracking and that is perfectly normal and okay! Your recruitment counselor (rho gamma) is there for you during the ups and downs of recruitment. The rho gammas have removed themselves from their chapter, to be an unbiased, confidential, and a neutral resource for you during the process. The rho gammas have been thoroughly interviewed, selected, and trained to be a strong unbiased support system for you. They are so excited to be your cheerleader not just through recruitment but leading up to it, to help you prepare, and afterwards! They want to build a friendship with you and be there to support you emotionally and mentally Once you have signed up for recruitment, a rho gamma will reach out to you and help you prepare for August! They are there for you, so feel free to ask questions about anything! Be sure to check your messages because they will be sending you important details regarding recruitment. They truly want you to have the best recruitment experience and are so excited to meet you and support you!

THE SCHEDULE
AUG.12 Move In
All Potential New Members will check in and move into their residence halls. If you live offcampus, you will still check in! Your recruitment counselors should be walking around, ready and excited to introduce themselves to you That evening, all PNMs will meet with their recruitment group and recruitment counselors to discuss plans for the following day.
AUG.13 Orientation
All PNMs will attend orientation, and hear from guest speakers throughout the day. That evening, PNMs will be able to participate in activities to know their recruitment group and recruitment counselors better! You will also participate in Jayhawks Give A Flock hosted by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center (SAPEC). This program is required for all incoming students
AUG.14+15 Open House
This event is spread across two days PNMs will meet all 11 chapters during this round. This round is a meet and greet, with short 25 minute conversations with chapter members Open House consists of a lot of "small talk", so one tip when preferencing is to remember the conversations you felt were deeper!
AUG.16 Philanthropy
For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is eight. These 30 minute events are based around values, service, and the chapter's philanthropy Be sure to ask any questions you have about requirements for service and study hours at all the chapters!
AUG.17 Sisterhood
For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is five. These 40 minute events will center around friendship and daily life as a chapter member Chapters will also host house tours on this day, and will be giving financial transparency presentations regarding their member dues. Ask questions about social events, living in the chapter house, and anything else that you need to know before preferencing. Going from five chapters to two is a big difference, so be intentional and authentic in your decision making!
AUG.18 Preference
For this round, the maximum number of chapters that a PNM will have the chance to visit is two, Preference Day rounds are 60 minutes long and are all about finding where you feel the best connection Each chapter will hold ceremonies unique to their own values and traditions. This is a very sentimental time to many chapter members, and you will hopefully get a sense of the bonds and sisterhood within each chapter This day will bring a close to your recruitment week and will bring you closer to where you belong Be yourself, trust your gut and ask any last questions you may have.
AUG.19 Bid Day
Rounds are over, you have finished preferencing, and now it's finally time to find out which chapter is yours to call home! All PNMs will arrive at a specified area with their recruitment groups, and each will receive a sealed envelope. There will be a designated time to open your envelopes to reveal your Bid Card, and also to find out which chapters your Rho Gammas belong to. After opening your envelope, you will gather around your chapter's designated area and go to the chapter's Bid Day festivities Plan on wearing solid colors and comfortable bottoms and undergarments Head to our Pinterest for more ideas regarding outfits. This is a fun day to get to know your new chapter and make friends before the start of the semester!

LETTERSOF RECOMMENDATION
Recommendations are letters or statements from a sorority alumna recommending a Potential New Member for membership. The alumna member will provide a brief description of the prospective member and explain why that woman would be an asset to the specific chapter. It is also important to note that a recommendation does not guarantee a Potential New Member an invitation to events during recruitment week, nor does it guarantee membership in that sorority.
For more information regarding specific chapters head to our website.
LEGACIES
A legacy is (typically) a Potential New Member who is the sister, daughter, or granddaughter of an alumnae sorority member. Being a legacy does NOT guarantee membership into a sorority. Legacy status can be indicated when registering online. Please have the alumnae member send a legacy introduction form and letter of recommendation directly to her sorority, as sororities will need to verify the information you list.
For more information regarding specific chapters legacy policies head to our website.

CONTINUOUS OPEN RECRUITMENT
Continuous Open Recruitment, also known as COR, is an informal recruitment that will begin immediately after Bid Day of Fall Formal Recruitment. Continuous Open Recruitment will end on stop day of the fall semester and resume on the first day of the spring semester. Anyone is eligible for COR if they are a current full time student at the University of Kansas and have not signed an MRABA since the last formal recruitment.
If Fall Formal Recruitment does not work out, COR is another great option. This is a more informal process compared to Fall Formal Recruitment. During COR, both chapters and potential new members have the opportunity to reach out to each other. COR consists of informal “dates'' such as getting coffee, zoom calls, phone calls, and other ways for chapter members to meet Potential New Members. The Panhellenic Association also puts on tabling events called “Meet the Chapters”, where Potential New Members can come and meet chapters at a structured event and go from there! Not every chapter participates in COR. Chapters must be below campus total to be eligible to participate which means until after Bid Day, it is uncertain which chapters will participate.
COMMITMENT TO EQUITY, INCLUSION, DIVERSITY & ACCESS
As a Panhellenic community, we work towards a constant goal of making recruitment and the sorority experience as equitable and accessible as possible. We know that barriers may be in the way of joining the Panhellenic community, and we are always looking for ways to go around them or break them down. We don't want someone ' s identity or financial situation to be a reason to miss out on joining a community that they want to be a part of. The Panhellenic community is always in the pursuit of resources for members and ways we can make a positive impact on the greater KU community. The Director of Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Access, Anna Wood, is always available to help chapters or individual members with any of their needs.

LDST 301 COURSE
Consider enrolling in LDST 301 during your orientation: Panhellenic new members are required to enroll in LDST 301, a class that will set them up for success in college during their first semester by teaching them the basics of bystander intervention. It is an expectation that new members take this course within the first year of their membership. To enroll for this Fall, just speak with your academic advisor during your New Student Orientation session to enroll.
SFL OFFICE INFORMATION
The mission of the office of Sorority and Fraternity Life is to empower members of the fraternity and sorority community to express their respective organizations' values through the embodiment of our shared commitment to academic achievement, civic and community engagement, diversity and inclusivity, personal and professional development and holistic wellness.
