Puijo Tower 60 years –memorable experiences in the national landscape

The best-known landmark in Kuopio is turning 60 years old. Standing on top of the Puijo Hill and surrounded by an ancient primeval forest, this transmission and observation tower rises 224 metres above the surface of Lake Kallavesi. The 75-metre concrete tower is designed by architect Seppo Ruotsalainen.

“The Puijo region is celebrating the anniversary year with several new features. Visitors can enjoy a new chair lift and accessible nature trails, among other improvements. Puijo is a forested living room for all Kuopio locals and a must-see sight for foreign travellers,” says Entrepreneur and CEO at Puijo Peak Oy Pekka Niemelä. puijopeak.fi

Various seasonal activities and events are organized at Puijo throughout the anniversary year. For example, visitors can enjoy downhill snow tubing with coloured lights in the beginning of the year. The events of the anniversary year are kicked off with a winter event for the whole family in January. A magical Halloween trail in the dark of autumn and a Christmas event wrap up the anniversary year.

As the old saying goes, “the scene from Puijo is the beauty of Finland gathered in one picture”. The Tower offers a panoramic view of the Finnish national landscape, and visitors can admire the view up to 50 kilometres in every direction.

“The Tower Restaurant serves local, seasonal dishes and, what’s more, in the revolving restaurant (360 degrees in one hour) you can see where the food on your plate has come from,” says Niemelä.
