INVESTING IN RESEARCH AND TOP KNOW-HOW PAYS OFF

Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) conducts research in dozens of medical specialities. Priority fields of research include neurological, ophthalmic, and internal diseases and musculoskeletal disorders. In 2021, there were just under 700 research projects in progress at KUH, and many of these are carried out in cooperation with the University of Eastern Finland.

“Research is the foundation of a health care system that is effective and equal. Research also produces know-how, innovations, and vitality. That is why the wellbeing services counties need to invest in research and top-level expertise,” says Director of Research and Innovation, Professor Juha Töyräs from KUH.

The aim of the project is to improve the understanding of mental health issues among decision-makers, professionals in the field and local residents and make mental health an everyday concern.

“Mental health is something that we all have,” says Länsimies.

Hoping to become a movement that shifts attitudes, Mieliteko is challenging everyone in North Savo to do 10 million small good deeds in 10 years.

“This means that everyone living in North Savo should do four small deeds every year. For example, you could smile at a passer-by or greet your neighbour. Many small deeds can make a big impact that spreads far and wide,” says Länsimies.
