From glittering Gulf cities and historic capitals to Asian hubs and African landscapes, these waypoints offer a change of pace before slipping into island time. With two shorter flights instead of one long stretch, and a rich contrast between destinations, the journey becomes every bit as memorable as the arrival.

SOUTH AFRICA
Few combinations deliver contrast quite like pairing South Africa’s wild beauty with the calm of the Indian Ocean. Mornings might bring a safari drive in search of elephants, afternoons could be spent in a coastal city or among the winelands, and then comes the switch to Mauritius for turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, and long evenings beneath a fading pink sky. From London, flights to South Africa take around 11.5 hours, with onward journeys to Mauritius in just over 4 hours. Together, they create a journey that feels both adventurous and indulgent.

THE MALDIVES DEEP DIVE
The Maldives is a collection of 1,200 islands, floating like confetti across the Indian Ocean. These islands form 26 natural atolls, which are essentially rings of coral islands and reefs that sit atop submerged volcanic mountains. It’s a geographical marvel, and yes, it looks just as dreamy in real life as it does on Instagram.
ISLAND ORIGINS
The Maldives has long been a cultural crossroads. Positioned along key trade routes, it has been influenced by Arabs, Africans, Indians, and Sri Lankans, all of whom have left their mark. It became a British protectorate in the 19th century and gained independence in 1965. Today, the Maldives is a sovereign nation with a rich blend of cultural heritage and a global outlook.
A REPUBLIC WITH TRADITION
The Maldives is an Islamic republic, and the country follows Islamic laws and customs. For visitors, this means being respectful of local traditions, especially when visiting
COME TO THE MALDIVES FOR:
ISLANDS OF FLAVOURS
You wouldn’t expect a tiny island nation to be a foodie’s dream, but the Maldives pulls it off. It’s a global luxury hotspot, so the culinary scene is impressively international. Fancy highend Japanese omakase and fiery Indian curries? Or rustic Italian trattorias and locally inspired seafood grills? You’ve got it.
SHAPED BY THE SEA
The ocean isn’t just scenery here. In the Maldives, the sea is a way of life. Fishing has been the backbone of the economy for centuries, and even today, most transport happens by boat or seaplane. Dive centres, surf shacks, and marine biology hubs dot the islands, all celebrating the Maldives’ oceanic soul.
local islands and the capital Malé where modest dress is encouraged and alcohol isn’t available.
ISLAND LIFE
Compared to the Caribbean, all the islands here are tiny. When we say an island in the Maldives is ‘large’, we’re talking about a 300-room resort that’s less than a mile long and has golf buggies to shuttle you around, versus a tiny speck that you can walk around in 10 minutes. The islands aren’t as similar as you might expect, so it’s important to choose the right one. See pages 12-13 for things to consider to help you refine your choice then chat to us – we’ll help you find ‘the one’.
MARINE MAGIC
The Maldives boasts some of the most spectacular marine life on the planet. Think manta rays gliding like spaceships, turtles grazing peacefully on seagrass, and a kaleidoscope of coral reefs. You might snorkel over a house reef or plunge into deeper waters for a drift dive. Either way, it’s one big underwater theatre.
NO NEWS NO SHOES
The beauty of these tiny islands is that they’re so pretty, so small, so idyllic, that you can switch off from the world for a while and do what holidays a meant forreconnenct, re-energise, rest and relax. See pages 14-15 for ideas on how to max out your time here.
TRIP NOTES
GETTING THERE
You can fly direct into Malé, although popular (and sometimes better value) stopover routes include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Sri Lanka. Depending on how far your resort is, you’ll transfer by speedboat, seaplane or for more remote islands, a domestic flight to a nearby island where they’ll collect you by boat. Resorts near Malé can be just a 15–45-minute speedboat ride away, while others may require a scenic seaplane journey over the atolls.
WHEN TO GO
The Maldives is a rare year-round destination. You’re right by the equator in the tropics. The wetter southwest monsoon from May to October is when you might get showers – usually short-lived and often followed by brilliant sunshine. Off-peak has advantages: surfing is better; it’s the season of manta rays, whale sharks and bioluminescence and as prices are lower it can be better value.
WHAT TO PACK
Light linen clothes tend to hit the mark in the evenings. You’ll need cover-ups during the day for bars and restuaurants. You won’t need heels - flip flops or even going bare foot is typical. Take some reeffriendly sun screen and mossie spray will come in handy. You won’t need an adapter - sockets take a UK plug. An underwater camera is also a great idea for when you’re snorkelling and diving.
‘Don’t worry about having enough to do in the Maldives. Some of the larger islands have features like a running track (just over two miles) as well as snorkelling, diving and loads of other watersports. A handful have some low-key nightlife too - you can stroll from bar to bar and catch some live music or chill on the beach at movie night.’

FINDING YOUR ISLAND MATCH
No two Maldivian islands are the same, and that’s what makes choosing one so exciting. Some feel like peaceful hideaways, while others are designed for families, food lovers or adventurers who want to do more than just relax. Knowing what sets them apart can help you make the right call.
START WITH THE VIBE
Each Maldivian resort sits on its own private island, which means the space, layout, and energy vary widely. Some are intimate and walkable, with just 30 villas. Others are spread across a couple of islands, connected by bridges or boats. Ask yourself if you want stillness and serenity or energy and variety, because both exist. Some resorts are rustic retreats, while others are cool and contemporary. Even at five-star hotels the daytime dress code is usually super casual (think shorts and flip flops). At most of our islands you’ll barely hear a peep after 10pm, but there are a couple that are livelier, where chic parties carry on until late.
THINK ABOUT FOOD AND FLEXIBILITY
You’ll find most resorts offer a range of options, including à la carte, half board, full board, all-inclusive and even ultra all inclusive, so you can tailor your stay to your own rhythm. Some islands focus on one or two standout restaurants, while others feature a whole collection of bars and dining spots.
ADD ADVENTURE, OR KEEP IT SIMPLE
Yes, you can lie on a beach. But if you’re more of a doer than a daydreamer, there’s plenty to get stuck into. The Maldives is a worldclass destination for diving, with coral walls, wrecks and big pelagic sightings. Watersports like e-foils, jetboards, catamarans and paddleboards are easy to find and often included. The wellness scene is equally world class, with treatments in treehouses, floating villas and even underwater rooms. Plus, visiting experts offering everything from sound therapy to full Ayurvedic programmes.
HONEYMOON HEAVEN
The Maldives is our number one honeymoon hotspot. It’s like nowhere else on Earth. You’ll understand once you’ve felt the talcum-soft sand between your toes, cosied up at a beach cinema to watch a movie under the stars and slept above its piercing blue lagoon in a private water villa.
IS THE MALDIVES REALLY A GOOD IDEA FOR FAMILIES?
A new generation of hotels are reinventing the family experience and moving away from resorts where kids are not simply tolerated to instead being welcomed from the get-go. See pages 16-17 for our pick of the bunch.

Dining at Constance Halaveli
Haali Sunset Bar, Dhigali
CONSIDER MORE THAN ONE ISLAND
Start your trip in an overwater villa designed for indulgent lounging, then switch things up with a castaway beach villa on a more rustic island. It’s the Maldivian version of a twin-centre trip without the long drives.
BEACH, OVERWATER OR BOTH?
Overwater villas here are the storybook fantasy. Big on privacy and romance. Beach villas are made for cool, castaway vibes, along with a bit more affordability. It’s pretty simple to experience both if you can’t decide.
ONE EPIC HOLIDAY
The Maldives can be an incredible end to a much bigger holiday. It’s just a 90-minute flight from Sri Lanka – a cultural delight and a little under the radar for a safari. You won’t see the Big 5, but many prefer it for a more intimate safari experience.
THINGS TO DO
Sharks, seaplanes, dolphins, reef-to-table feasts, and local island life. The Maldives offers far more than just beaches. Whether you dive in, drift along, or soar above, every day can bring something new if you want it to.
SWIM WITH THE BIG GUYS
Swimming with sharks in the Maldives might sound daring, but it’s a safe and unforgettable way to explore these waters. The islands’ waters are home to over 26 species of sharks, most of which are harmless, reef-dwelling species. Whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea, glide slowly through the atolls year-round if you know where to find them. Time your trip for manta rays and whale sharks between November and April in the west, or May to October in the east.
PLAY ON THE WAVES
The lagoons and reefs are the wonderlands of the Maldives. Sail off into the sunset, try to catch a wave (yes, there’s surfing here, too!), or go full-on angler with a fishing trip. If relaxation’s more your thing, hop on a dolphin cruise and spot spinner dolphins performing acrobatics. Whether you’re riding the swells or taking it easy on a glassy lagoon, the Maldives serves up water adventures with a side of pure joy.
FEASTS IN FANTASY SETTINGS
Dining here is not just about what’s on the plate, but where you’re eating it. Think candlelit dinners on a deserted sandbank, a treetop feast in a jungle hideaway, or even an underwater restaurant with fish-eye views. You’ll find everything from freshly grilled reef fish to fine dining magic.
RESET AND RECHARGE
Offering way beyond your basic spa menus, there are Maldives resorts that offer full-on mind-body reboot programmes. Picture Ayurvedic doctors creating tailored plans, sunrise yoga sessions by the beach, guided meditations or sound healing, breathwork, and Reiki. If it’s a question of refreshing, recharging, or rebooting, you’ll find the answer in the Maldives.
WINGS OVER WATER
Boarding a seaplane and soaring across the Maldives feels like flying over another planet. The views? Unreal. Tiny islands dotting endless blues and greens, with sandbars that look painted in. The ride itself is a thrill, skimming the ocean before lifting into the sky, and then smoothly touching down in paradise.
MEET THE LOCALS
Pop the resort bubble and explore life as the locals live it. With a friendly guide, you can wander through local communities, check out family-run shops, peek into mosques, and maybe even catch a game of beach football. Local excursions offer a rare chance to connect with Maldivian culture and history in a way that’s genuine and unscripted.
MALDIVES FAMILY FAVOURITES
There are plenty of activity-packed resorts designed with families firmly in mind. Villas with separate kids’ bedrooms and private pools, reef safaris steps from your villa, and kids’ clubs with a line-up of creative, handson activities are just the beginning.
KURAMATHI MALDIVES
Best for: Large and active families
Kuramathi is brilliant for bigger families or multi-generational trips, thanks to its two-bedroom, duplex beach houses, and its location in North Ari Atoll means you have the option to arrive by seaplane or speedboat. The island is one of the larger ones at a mile and a half long, so it has more things to do than others, plus Kuramathi offers different ways to explore away from the island if you know you’ll get a little restless. Back at base, kids can join the excellent Bageecha Kids Club, complete with splash zone and treehouse, and they can safely snorkel straight off the beach, too. 360 rooms & villas | Our rating: 4 star
CONSTANCE HALAVELI

It’s a particularly good option if your kids are over 12 because of all the things there are to do here. TIPS FOR AN EPIC FAMILY TRIP
PLAN YOUR TRANSFERS
Seaplanes are exciting (hello, family adventure), but can mean a longer wait after your long-haul flight. Speedboats to islands closer to the airport can be shorter. Check the transfer times when booking and weigh up what suits your family best.
THINK VILLA SPACE
Many Maldivian villas are far bigger than your typical hotel room, and plenty have their own pool, private beach access, or both. Look for villas with two bedrooms or an extra bathroom if you’re travelling with older kids. Many resorts offer extra beds in rooms if you’re travelling with up to two children under 12, which can make it great value.
BABIES & TODDLERS
It’s not such a crazy idea to bring a baby or toddler to the Maldives –pools for splashing in and beaches to play on could not be closer. Many resorts supply pretty much everything, from bottle warmers to buggies, so you can leave all your kit at home too.
RELAX AND EXPLORE
Mix things up with snorkelling trips, dolphin cruises, local island visits or marine biology sessions. Many resorts offer fun, educational activities that sneak in learning while everyone is having a great time. Not only does it keep things interesting, they’re experiences that create lasting family memories.
GIVE TEENS THEIR FREEDOM
When they’re craving their independence, you should choose a resort that offers surf lessons, diving courses, water sports, or dedicated teen hangouts.

DESIGN THAT MAKES YOU SMILE
WHERE? ANANEA MADIVARU MALDIVES
Ananea Madivaru is sharp and stylish and our new kid on the block. Villas curve with mid-century flair, decked out in terrazzo floors and coral accents. Its two islands, linked by a wooden jetty, give you space to stretch out. One’s for poolside lounging and beachy downtime, the other for spa sessions and sunset dinners. The lagoon begs for paddleboarding, the house reef shimmers with marine life, and snorkelling is as easy as stepping off the sand. It’s a design-forward escape that feels polished, not pretentious.
Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru nails the sweet spot: compact and quintessentially Maldivian, but overflowing with personality. “No need to choose between ocean and adventure in the OG Indian Ocean destination. Get sea-soaked and sandyfooted but also see the forests, flowers and volcanic craters. Do the hikes, sights and helicopter flights. Instant classic. Mauritius is for Indian Ocean adventure.”

MAURITIUS MARVELLOUS
A mix of global cultures meets striking natural beauty in this Indian Ocean island paradise. Mauritius has one of the most layered histories in the Indian Ocean, shaped by centuries of migration and movement. Its food, languages, festivals and places of worship reflect the mix of cultures that have taken root on the island. Africa, Asia, Europe and India all leave their traces here in ways that continue to influence everyday life.
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MAURITIUS?
Mauritius is a true cultural cocktail. Though turquoise seas surround it, Mauritius isn’t just about the beach. Towering mountains, ancient volcanic craters, dense forests, and rainbow-coloured earth give the island a dramatic edge. Add in a strong sense of national pride and a modern economy, and you’ve got a destination with both soul and substance.
COME TO MAURITIUS FOR
THINGS TO DO
If the Maldives feels too castaway then Mauritius is it for Indian Ocean adventure. There’s summits, saltpans, hiking trails, the UNESCO sites of Aapravasi Ghat and Le Morne as well as the golf and ocean-based activities it’s maybe more famous for. See pages 28-29 for ideas of things to do.
FOOD
The food scene is sweet, spicy, fresh and full of flavour with French, Indian Chinese and African influences. Try the Creole sauce. Eat the spicy fritters. Try the pineapple and chilli flakes. Visit rum distilleries and local markets for sensational flavours and learn tips for home in a Mauritian cooking class.
VOLCANO HIGH, VALLEY LOW
For even higher volcanic peaks and lush tropical wilderness, head to beautiful La Réunion – a relative geological youngster with a French identity quite unlike its neighbour. In fact, it’s more like a gloriously scaled down Hawaii or an epic real-life Jurassic Park movie-set. There’s still the chance to relax in coastal hotels, but with scenery so wonderfully diverse, you’ll want to get out and explore.
PEOPLE & CULTURE
This is a land of friendly, welcoming people, where children are doted on and visitors are treated like old friends. The Mauritians take pride in their cultural heritage. There’s a vibrant artisan scene for local crafts and textiles (souvenirs include inTricately carved wood and batik).
LANDSCAPES
Make a beeline for the island’s centre to stroll around a gigantic volcanic crater rim. Geology literally rocks in Mauritius. Black River Gorge National Park is where to head to hike trails (some challenging, some less so), stunning waterfalls, deep valleys and lush flora and fauna.

TRIP NOTES
WHEN SHOULD YOU GO?
January and February are the hottest and most humid months, with a higher chance of tropical rain. From March to May, the weather is more pleasant: warm, with less rain, ideal for exploring the island’s natural beauty. May to September feels like a perfect English summer, with sunny, mild days and cooler nights, making it a great time for families who prefer to avoid the intense heat of places like Greece or the Middle East in the summer holidays.
GETTING THERE
Mauritius is easy to reach, with direct flights from the UK taking around 12 hours. The time difference is just three or four hours ahead of the UK (depending on the time of year), so there’s no serious jet lag to contend with. If you fancy breaking up the journey, you can combine a holiday in Mauritius with a stop in the UAE.
GETTING AROUND
You’ll have transfers included in your holiday, but to make the most of your holiday you’ll want to travel around. A private / driver guide is a great way to get out and about and see the island. Your chauffeur will tailor your trip and the pace based on the things that interest you most but the best bit is their insight into local culture and hidden dining spots you’d otherwise miss.Hiring a car is a great way to get around the island if you want to explore on your own.
PLANNING YOUR STAY
You’ll find our full range of holidays to Mauritius at Kuoni.co.uk. It’s so much more than a beach destination – there are lots of combinations we’d recommend for holidays here. See pages 2829 for ideas on how to holiday here then get in touch and we can plan it together.

MAURITIUS’ SHAPE AND SOUL
Mauritius may look small on the map, so you may be surprised by how much it offers. The island is wonderfully varied, with flat plains and sugarcane fields in the north and east, and lush, mountainous landscapes rising through the centre and west.
A holiday here can feel like two or three very different trips rolled into one, with new scenery, experiences and atmospheres around every corner.
EXPLORE WITH EASE
If you decide to hire a car, you’ll be driving on the left, just like in the UK, and the road network feels familiar. Think quiet country lanes, green landscapes, and coastal stretches with breathtaking views. Hiring a car makes exploring easy and enjoyable, allowing you to set your own pace as you discover local markets, hidden waterfalls, or panoramic viewpoints.
EXPERIENCE BOTH COASTS
For time maximisers who want to explore more, we can switch things up with a week on the west coast (hello calm waters and whales) and a week on the north coast (hey giant-sized lily pads and lotus). The east is known for dramatic ocean views, with waves crashing against distant reefs while calm lagoons stretch out in front of you. On the west coast, the sea is calm and clear, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the sunsets are unforgettable. This is the place for beach walks and evening drinks by the water.
FAMILY
Mauritius offers some of the best-value family holidays in the Indian Ocean with hotels whose pools, ice cream parlours and beach games are made for tiny voices and tastes. The active outdoor lifestyle (whether you’re using the beach as soft play or hiking up mountains) gets family conversations flowing. See pages 32-33 for our family favourites.
RADIANT, REMOTE AND ROMANTIC
Mauritius hits the spot for the idyllic beaches and choice of hotels for a super romantic honeymoon that you’d expect in the Indian Ocean, but for those worried about not having enough to do on this once in a lifetime holilday, it also rates highly for things beyond the beach. Travellers are tempted by stunning national parks, botanical gardens, rum factories and Port Louis, one of the best places in Mauritius for street food.

TWIN TIME
Spend a few days up in the hills at Lakaz Chamarel, where the peaceful forest setting and open-air living create a sense of total calm. Then head to the coast for beach time, sea swims and exploring local towns. The shift in landscape feels like two distinct holidays in one.
MAURITIUS AND LA REUNION
Tick off not one but two paradise islands with this Indian Ocean twin-centre. With mountainous peaks, cascading falls and junglelike forests, both are a playground for adventure seekers. Scenery wise, you’re in for a serious treat – don’t forget your camera.
SAFARI AND BEACH
On one amazing holiday you could mix the cultural, culinary and wildlife highlights of South Africa with relaxation and adventure of a different kind on Mauritius.Explore Cape Town, the Winelands and safari in Kruger before heading to this Indian Ocean isle.

DO MORE THAN JUST UNWIND
There’s plenty of time to stretch out on a sun lounger in Mauritius, but if you’re up for a little more, the island brings an A-game. One day you’re sharing dinner in a local’s home, the next you’re flying across the water on a kiteboard or spotting whales from a boat.
STEP INTO LOCAL LIFE
One of the best ways to connect with Mauritius is to step inside a local home, pull up a chair, and share a home-cooked meal. Thanks to Attitude Hotels’ Otentik experiences, you can do just that. You’ll be welcomed by a member of staff into their family home for a proper Mauritian dinner, cooked just as they’d make it for friends. It’s relaxed, delicious, and full of the kind of stories and insight you won’t find in a restaurant.
TEE OFF WITH A VIEW
Golfers are in for a treat. Mauritius has some of the greenest, most jaw-droppingly scenic courses you’ll ever play. Think fairways edged with palm trees, greens carved into tropical landscapes, and ocean views that threaten to distract you from your backswing. The climate helps too, keeping everything beautifully lush and playable all year round.
CATCH THE WIND
Mauritius is a serious playground for wind and kite surfers. Around the southwest coast, the conditions ramp up into something properly thrilling. If you’re experienced, you’ll be in your element. If not, don’t worry. Calmer lagoons, steady breezes, and a handful of excellent schools make learning here feel surprisingly doable. Even first-timers often end the day standing up, smiling, and slightly addicted
DIVE INTO WILD MAURITIUS
The wildlife in Mauritius doesn’t hide away. You might spot whales breaching offshore, giant tortoises munching lazily in the sun, or shoals of reef fish weaving through coral gardens. Snorkel safaris at Lagoon Attitude are a fun way to meet life underwater, and on an underwater trek you can walk the sea floor like some kind of tropical astronaut.
SAIL THE EAST COAST
Hop on a boat and follow the curves of the east coast for a day that’s as scenic as it is fun. Along the way, you’ll spot wavebattered cliffs, tucked-away beaches, and tiny islands. There’s time to swim, snorkel, and enjoy a barbecue on deck if you like.
FAMILY FAVES
Whether you’ve got toddlers, tweens, or teens, there’s a resort in Mauritius to suit your crew. These hotels offer spacious family rooms, kids’ clubs that cater to all ages and restaurants where noisier diners are part of the plan, not a problem. Forget the usual nuggets and chips and colouring sheets. This is where holidays feel like a win for everyone.
ZILWA ATTITUDE
Best for: Fun-loving families after barefoot beach life
Zilwa’s Deluxe Family Rooms feature two single beds in a separate kids’ room, along with bright, playful decor that skips the beige. When you’re back together, treat yourselves to minime spa treatments for bonding moments or take a five-minute boat trip for a family barbecue on a desert island. 214 rooms | Our rating: 4 star
PRESKIL ISLAND RESORT
Best for: Toddlers and pre-schoolers
Preskil’s family rooms have sofa beds for kids and space for travel cots, if they’re still at the napping age, you can relax on your terrace while they snooze in air-conditioned bliss. Better still, the Tikoulou Baby Club welcomes little ones from as young as three months old, giving new parents a breather. If they’re older, the lagoon is calm and warm, ideal for little legs, and the small kids’ club has a shaded outdoor play area, story sessions and dress-up fun. MAURITIUS FAMILY HOLIDAY TIPS
TIME DIFFERENCE
It’s a three-four hour time difference and a direct flight to Mauritius so not only is the journey less disruptive than some Indian Ocean islands, there’s less impact on sleep – they’ll wake up later but keep a sleep pattern similar to at home.
LEAVE YOUR KIT AT HOME
If you’re travelling with babies and young children, you can leave all the big kit (bottle warmers, buggies etc) at home. Some hotels have clubs for babies from three months old.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY ROOMS
Mauritius family-friendly hotels are amongst the best for overall family space. Many have separate sleeping spaces as standard so you’re not pulling out sofa beds or camping out together in one room.
TEENAGE DREAM
Hit age 12 and often family holidays become pricier when extra rooms are needed. Not so here – the best family-friendly hotels consider under 18s as children.
THE ALL INCLUSIVE MENU
All inclusive is great value unless you find nothing on the menu for fussy eaters. Hotels here serve a diverse range of dishes in their all inclusive offering, including pizza, salads chips and rice.
BEYOND THE WATER
Watersports, kids clubs and hotelbased activities are in abundance, but the real beauty of Mauritius for a family holiday is the sense of adventure for travellers in training to see lofty mountains, cascading waterfalls and explore fab cities.
FAMILY DAY TRIPS
You can see a lot of Mauritius on day trips, which means the kids get a good sense of the place they’re visiting and still have time each day to splash around in the pool.

If your idea of luxury includes a bit of peace and zero pressure to do anything, this one’s for you. Kick things off in the cool, green hills of Chamarel, staying at Lakaz Chamarel: a low-key eco-lodge surrounded by forest, birdsong, and the occasional monkey. Think hidden daybeds, calm water, and evenings that stretch out slowly.

SEYCHELLES SENSATIONAL
The Seychelles is a dazzling archipelago of 115 islands, scattered like emeralds across the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. With jungle-covered peaks, smooth granite boulders, and some of the most photogenic beaches on earth, the Seychelles is what happens when nature decides to show off.
MAHÉ, PRASLIN OR LA DIGUE?
Mahé is more than just a ticket to paradise. Everyone flies into the biggest island (still tiny), so staying there is super convenient. It’s got great contrasts. Mountains, mangroves, markets and the capital city. For wildlife, small city sights and a luxury hotel or two this is your scene.
It’s an hour by ferry or 20 minutes by plane from Mahé to whisper-quiet Praslin, the soul soother. Like all of the islands, it’s got advert-beautiful beaches and Star Wars-style granite boulders but also Vallee de Mai Nature Park where unique species – bronze geckos, black parrots and sunbirds – are the stuff of Darwin dreams. And the right ratio of restaurants at

The most photographed beach in the world is La Digue’s Anse Source d’Argent. Get there by ferry from Mahe. Praslin is for the shallow waters, the mousequiet beaches, the sunset walks along frothy shores and more of those famous granite boulders (Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette).
WILDLIFE
This is one of the world’s last true island wildernesses; where conservation and paradise go hand in hand. Coral reefs here are among the healthiest in the world. On land, hiking trails weave through forests and past rare palms and orchids. On Praslin you’ll find coco de mer trees and endemic bird species.
the edge of the ocean and roadside fruit shacks for ice pops and passion fruits.
Fed up of civilization? Get off road and offline in tiny, tiny La Digue. The ferry takes just under two hours from Mahé and only 15 minutes from Praslin. Or arrive by helicopter. The vibe is bicycles (the island is almost car-free), boulders and beaches (pink sandy perfection at Anse Source d’Argent). The scent is vanilla, hibiscus and gardenia wafting over from La Union Estate Botanical Garden. Holiday here for afternoon siestas and refreshingly unpretentious hotels capturing the easygoing nature of the archipelago. Get acquainted with the island on our two-wheel tour.
A CULTURAL PATCHWORK
The people of Seychelles, known as Seychellois, are descendants of African, European, and Asian settlers. This diversity is woven into daily life. Music, dance, and storytelling play a big part in island culture and visitors are met with genuine warmth.
INDIAN OCEAN FLAVOURS
The food here is a delicious reflection of the islands’ cultural mix. Expect a blend of French, African, Indian and Chinese influences, with seafood as the star. You’ll also find plenty of Creole cuisine, served in everything from beachside shacks to elegant restaurants.
TRIP NOTES
When to go Seychelles has warm, tropical weather all year round. The drier, calmer months run from May to October. November to April brings hotter, more humid days with occasional showers. During the wetter months, the rain often comes in short, dramatic bursts followed by sunshine so it’s a yearround destination.
Getting there
Flying from the UK takes, on average, just under 14 hours and you’ll arrive at Seychelles International on Mahé. You can’t fly direct, so you’ll need to break up your journey and doing so means you get a real destination mix-up with the contrast of places like Dubai or Qatar. But if its all about nature, you can twin the Seychelles with South Africa and Kenya.
Getting around
Travel between islands becomes part of the adventure. You can hop on a ferry or catch a domestic flight. Hike it, bike it, stroll it or boat it. Some of the best beaches aren’t accessible by road so pack your hiking boots and trail through forests. Bicycles are the transport of choice on La Digue.

THE SEYCHELLES
This is an Indian Ocean paradise much like its contemparies: snorkelling, reefs and a stay on a private island but it embraces a greater extent of variety. You get much more than postcard views and we can vouch that all the different sides of the Seychelles are worth your time.
ISLAND HOPPING HEAVEN
The main island, Mahé, is where journeys begin. It’s the Seychelle’s largest island, home to the capital Victoria, and a central mountainous spine. Surrounding it are the so-called ‘inner islands’, including Praslin and La Digue. Each has its own distinct charm and rhythm of life. Further afield lie the outer islands: scattered gems that include remote atolls like Aldabra, a UNESCO-listed coral atoll with giant tortoises and untouched reefs.
IS THE SEYCHELLES GOOD FOR A HONEYMOON OR ROMANTIC HOLIDAY FOR TWO?
Travel together for the first time as newlyweds or head here for some well-deserved ‘us’ time. The Seychelles do all the work: genteel stuff to seduce you and jungle action to keep you entertained. Disappear for days with a mile long spa menu, keep it private with pool villas and room service or sail, surf and see the other islands.
HOW ABOUT A SEYCHELLES FAMILY HOLIDAY?
For multi-gen trips and family holidays, the Seychelles is a memorymaker. Like the rest of the Indian Ocean, some resorts have really upped their game in welcoming kids – Constance Ephelia in particular is worth a shout-out.
OCEAN INSPIRATION
Snorkel from the beaches and also in the marine parks. Keep your eyes peeled for lemon sharks, mantas and turtles. Tiny electric blue fish and sand-coloured stingrays. Newbie divers can get their PADI and old hands will find shipwrecks and drift dives. Dolphins are year-round fans of the Seychelles and whale sharks, slightly more secretive, arrive between September and November. If fins or flippers aren’t your thing you can meet and greet the marine world from a private charter glass bottom boat. Great for the littlest of sailors too.
IN SEARCH OF THE REALLY WILD SHOW
The natural world in the Seychelles is a biggie and it’ll do wonders for your wellness. They have a really strong commitment to conservation and protecting their unique ecosystems which you’ll see when you visit any nature reserves.

SAFARI & SNORKELLING
Start in Kenya on our Governors’ safari where it’s all about big cats and the Big Five which includes a stay in a luxury tented camp in the Maasai Mara. Then it’s just over a 3-hour flight from Nairobi to Victoria in the Seychelles.
MIC-DROP VIEWS
If you’re staying on Mahé challenge yourself to hike the Copolia Trail. The trail is well sign-posted and takes you through Morne Seychelles National Park to Morne Blanc peak. It’s a round-trip route (just over a mile each way) and worth it for the stunning panoramic views.
DUBAI & BEACH
There are few places where you can drink tea in a desert tent, eat in goldfilled Michelin-starred restaurants and pick up arty pieces at a futuristic shopping centre all in the same day. The next, you’re in the Seychelles, the antithesis to Dubai, but one incredible holiday.
Snorkelling in Praslin
THINGS TO DO
This is a place to explore barefoot, to follow coastal paths, tide lines, and the pace set by giant tortoises. It’s less about ticking things off, more about noticing what you’d usually rush past.
HOP BETWEEN WORLDS
Why settle for one island when you can dip into a few? Hop between Mahé, Praslin, La Digue and beyond by ferry, catamaran or even light aircraft. One day you’re hiking through rainforest, the next you’re snorkelling off a beach so quiet it feels like a secret. You might start your morning with strong Creole coffee on Mahé and end it with your feet in the sand on Praslin, listening to the same sea with a whole new view.
CYCLE THROUGH LA DIGUE
La Digue runs at pedal pace. Rent a bike, grab a fresh juice, and cruise from beach to beach under the shade of palms. The island is small enough to explore in a day, yet full of slow moments worth savouring, from vanilla-scented paths to giant tortoises wandering through the gardens. With no traffic and barely a schedule, the whole place feels made for exploring.
SWIM THROUGH CORAL CITIES
Snorkelling in the Seychelles puts you face-to-fin with parrotfish, angelfish and rays gliding past coral gardens that look too vivid to be real. Off the coast of Mahé and around Sainte Anne or Baie Ternay, the reefs are shallow, clear and teeming with life. One moment you’re drifting over brain coral, the next you’re eye-level with a turtle or watching a school of silver fish shift like glitter in the sun.
FLY HIGH FOR THE FULL PICTURE
A helicopter ride over the islands is part thrill, part dreamscape. From above, the reefs glow bright against the deeper blue, forested peaks look untouched, and the curve of each beach feels perfectly drawn. It’s quick, smooth and surprisingly serene. Ideal if you want a wow moment, or a smug photo to send back home. Bonus points if you can spot a turtle from the sky.
WANDER WITH THE TORTOISES
The Seychelles’ giant tortoises aren’t shy. You’ll find them in reserves on Praslin, La Digue and Curieuse, chomping on leaves, wandering slowly through the brush or just snoozing like oversized boulders. They’re ancient, peaceful and strangely calming to be around. Kids love them, adults get quietly obsessed, and photos never quite do their prescence justice.
FIND BIG FLAVOUR IN THE SMALL CAPITAL
Victoria is one of the world’s tiniest capitals, but it packs a lot in. Stroll through the market and you’ll find spices, fruit, Creole snacks, and stallholders who’ll tell you what to try. There’s a botanical garden with giant lilies, a tiny Big Ben clock tower and enough colour and character to fill a morning.
Seychelles
BEST FOR FAMILIES
What if your next family holiday felt more like an adventure than a checklist of pool days?
In the Seychelles, the wild edges haven’t been smoothed out. One minute you’re zip-lining through rainforest, the next you’re paddling through mangroves or spotting a giant tortoise crossing your path. Younger kids can splash in calm lagoons and dig for shells in the shade, while older ones might be hiking jungle trails or learning to cook fragrant Creole curries.
CONSTANCE EPHELIA
Best for: Big villas, bigger adventures
Constance Ephelia, on the main island of Mahé, is vast in the best way. Tucked between two beaches and flanked by mangroves and a national park, the resort spans across 120 hectares of tropical gardens. You’ll find nature trails, tennis courts, paddleboards, kayaks, and, for the brave, a proper zipline circuit to whoosh through the forest canopy (it’s worth it). The Coconut Tribe Kids’ Club (ages 4 to 11) runs from morning to evening, featuring splash pool games, mini cooking sessions, mangrove adventures, and movie nights. Family villas are vast and come with private pools, lush gardens, and enough room for everyone to spread out without stepping on each other’s flip flops.

CONSTANCE LEMURIA
Best for: Family space, turtles, and championship golf
On Praslin’s quieter coast, Lemuria delivers proper wow factor without trying too hard. It’s wrapped in jungle, edged by three beaches, and home to the Seychelles’ only 18hole golf course. From October to February, kids can help monitor nesting turtles or spot hatchlings with the in-house conservation team. Villas are steps from the sand, with heaps of space for teens to sprawl and unwind. There’s a kids’ club for younger ones, plus kayaking, snorkelling, and pizzamaking sessions for all ages. If you’re after barefoot luxury with wildlife, sport, and some of the island’s best sunsets, this is your move.

STORY SEYCHELLES
Best for: Easy-going beach life
Set on Mahé’s longest beach, STORY Seychelles is the sort of place where days unfold slowly. Kids can chase crabs in the shallows, try paddleboarding in the bay, or dive into craft sessions at the TreeTops club. Family suites link together, so you get privacy without distance, while beachfront villas come with private pools and front-row sunset views. There’s giant chess on the lawn, volleyball on the sand, and a reef close enough to snorkel before breakfast. A handful of restaurants keeps dining interesting, and the whole place hums with that rare mix of polished and playful.

Tucked into Praslin’s quieter southwest coast, Coco de Mer offers a relaxed, leafy setting where giant tortoises wander the gardens and the sea stays in view. Evenings are best spent on the terrace, watching the light shift across the bay, while boat trips to nearby Curieuse Island (home to roaming tortoises) are easy to arrange and genuinely memorable. There’s no formal kids’ club, but families are warmly welcomed. Younger children have a dedicated pool to splash in, and babysitting can be arranged if you fancy dinner for two.

LABRIZ SILHOUETTE ISLAND
Best for: Wild island feels, with all the trimmings Silhouette Island feels like its own little world. No cars, barely a schedule, just rainforest, reef, and long, quiet beaches that stretch without interruption. Labriz Silhouette makes the most of it, with villas tucked between trees or set right on the sand, some with pools, all with privacy. The kids’ club for primary-aged children keeps things lively with coconut crafts and Creole stories, and there’s babysitting if you want to plan a quiet dinner. Days can be as full or as loose as you like: snorkelling off the house reef, kayaking along the coast, or tackling a jungle trail together before cooling off under a waterfall.

WHICH THE SEYCHELLES SUITS YOUR FAMILY?
Mahé: Easy-going and action-packed
Mahé is the easiest island to get to, although there isn’t a direct flight here from the UK. It’s ideal for families who want variety without the hassle of hopping between islands. You’ll find long beaches, rainforest walks, local markets, and lots of family-friendly dining.
Praslin: Calm, green, and full of wonder
Praslin moves at a gentler pace. Smaller and quieter than Mahé, it’s great for families with schoolage children or teens who are curious about nature. You can explore ancient palm forests in the Vallée de Mai, swim at Anse Lazio, or take a boat to nearby Curieuse Island to spot giant tortoises. Everything feels easy to reach, with just enough adventure to keep everyone engaged.
Silhouette: Wild island energy
With no cars and barely any roads, it’s all about rainforests, reefs, and wide beaches that stretch on without interruption. It suits adventurous families with older children who want to snorkel straight from the shore, hike jungle trails, and discover nature together. The pace is slow, the setting is dramatic, and the sense of space is unlike anywhere else in the Seychelles.
GREAT FOR TEENS
The Seychelles isn’t the first place that springs to mind for a family holiday – but for older kids there’s so much to see and do, and guaranteed to spark a wanderlust to see more of the world.

WHERE? LE REPAIRE BOUTIQUE HOTEL, LA DIGUE
La Digue is one of the smaller, quieter inner islands of the Seychelles, a short ferry ride from Praslin. On its west coast, Le Repaire sits on a calm, turquoise lagoon, tucked beneath whispering takamaka trees, and rooms open onto a garden where sunbirds flutter. Borrow a bike, pedal for five minutes, and you’re eye-to-eye with giant tortoises or climbing granite boulders at Anse Source d’Argent. Then, kayak across shallows so clear they seem unreal, then order wood-fired pizza with your toes in the sand.

PALM FORESTS AND CORAL BAYS
WHERE? COCO DE MER HOTEL & BLACK PARROT SUITES, PRASLIN
Coco de Mer sits near Praslin’s Vallée de Mai, a UNESCOlisted palm forest where the rare coco de mer grows and the Seychelles black parrot nests in the high canopy. The resort opens out to a calm, reef-protected bay where you can snorkel or paddleboard right from shore. Fruit bats glide overhead in the evening, and the calls of endemic parrots carry through the trees. Paths wind through granite outcrops and thick greenery, giving the whole place a relaxed, natural rhythm.

REEF LIFE AND FOREST PATHS
WHERE? CERF ISLAND RESORT
Cerf Island sits just off the coast of Mahé, but it feels far more remote. Villas are tucked into thick hillside vegetation, where you fall asleep to waves and wake to birdsong. The surrounding marine park is alive with reef sharks, turtles, and shoals of bright fish that swim close to shore. You can paddle over calm water, snorkel straight from the beach, or hike forest trails to quiet lookouts. There are no roads, no cars, and no noise. Just space, sea, and the steady rhythm of island life.
24 rooms | Our ratIng: 4 star
TURTLES AND RARE BIRDS WHERE? DENIS PRIVATE ISLAND
Denis is a private island dedicated to conservation and the preservation of wild nature. It’s home to nesting sea turtles, giant tortoises, and endangered birds like the Seychelles warbler and magpie robin. You can walk from dense forest to coral reef in minutes, passing through takamaka trees and untouched beaches along the way. The resort is low-impact and designed for privacy, with wide verandas and open-air showers that keep you connected to the outdoors. There’s no phone signal and no Wi-Fi in the rooms, so nature has your full attention.

WOW STAYS: SEYCHELLES IN STYLE
Some hotels do more than simply give you a place to sleep. They can change the way you think about holidays altogether. These four gems combine striking locations, impeccable service, and a sense of theatre that will have you plotting your return.
HIGH HORIZONS WHERE? RAFFLES, PRASLIN
Sunrise over the ocean looks different from a private villa at Raffles Seychelles with a coffee poured by your private butler. High above Praslin’s lush coastline, this resort has 86 luxury villas cascading downthe hillside, each with a plunge pool and a generous deck made for lazy breakfasts. When you’re ready, the hillside spa awaits. It’s a fragrant open-air retreat to lull you even deeper into a sense of calm. Then, a short buggy ride or downhill walk brings you to a curve of soft white sand where you can linger over lunch just steps from the shoreline.

TROPICAL TRANQUILLITY WHERE? LE DOMAINE DE L’ORANGERAIE, LA DIGUE
Life moves at bicycle pace on La Digue, and Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie fits right in. Villas play peekaboo among tropical gardens, some with open-air bathrooms for starlit showers. The team moves with quiet precision, from arranging a private dinner in the gardens to delivering sunset cocktails to your terrace. A bamboo-wrapped spa and the island’s unhurried rhythm make it easy to forget the world beyond the shore.

VIEWS FOR DAYS WHERE? HILTON SEYCHELLES NORTHOLME, MAHÉ
Our experts love Hilton Seychelles Northolme because it manages to feel both private and deeply connected to its setting. With every villa angled to capture uninterrupted ocean views and the dramatic granite boulders below, it’s a masterclass in making the most of the landscape. Some villas add plunge pools for afternoons in complete privacy, while evenings are best spent at the overwater restaurant enjoying dishes built around the island’s freshest produce.

MODERN ISLAND SOUL WHERE? MANGO HOUSE SEYCHELLES, MAHÉ
Mango House sits beside the calm curve of Anse aux Poules Bleues on Mahé’s south coast, where the water stays clear and still year-round. Rooms and suites all face the bay, with warm wood and soft linen giving them a natural ease. It is the kind of place where the day finds its own rhythm: a paddleboard at sunrise, a swim before lunch, an hour or two just watching the tide. Pure bliss. Meals feature local flavours, served in spaces that always keep the view in sight.

“Sri Lanka is a country that captures your heart and won’t let go. Prepare to be captivated by this teardrop isle’s ancient treasures, wild wonders and mouth-watering food.”
– Laura Robertson, Kuoni Travel Expert, Metrocentre
SRI LANKA SENSATIONAL
Sri Lanka feels like several destinations rolled into one. Ancient cities, misty highlands, national parks, and sandy beaches all sit surprisingly close together. You can go from jungle to ocean in a matter of hours. It works as a standalone beach holiday, but most people get far more out of it by moving around. Following a route that links different regions brings the country to life and gives you a proper sense of how much it has to offer.
ONE ISLAND, MANY MOODS
Sri Lanka may be smaller than Ireland, but it packs in more variety than you’d expect from a country twice its size. One day you’re climbing ancient citadels, the next you’re spotting elephants in the wild or stretching out on a beach with barely anyone else in sight. It’s easy to see a lot without ever feeling rushed. Stay longer, and you’ll start to tune into the real rhythm of the island — warm, welcoming, and impossible to forget.
COME TO SRI LANKA FOR:
SRI LANKAN FLAVOUR
Think coconut sambol ground fresh that morning, deep earthy curries, tangy pickles, and lacy-edged hoppers served straight from the griddle. Roadside roti shacks serve the most delicious meals. Take a hands-on cooking class with a local chef or join your chauffeur-guide for spontaneous snack stops.
WILDLIFE
Sri Lanka’s wildlife is thrilling, diverse, and often just around the corner. Leopards may be the stars of the show, but you’ll also find elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, monkeys, and an orchestra of birds. Yala National Park is the most famous safari spot, but Wilpattu and Gal Oya are quieter yet just as special.
CULTURE THAT RUNS DEEP
Sri Lanka’s history isn’t just something you see. It’s something you feel. Climb the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, where frescoes and fortress ruins meet sweeping jungle views. Wander the sacred city of Anuradhapura, where pilgrims still light oil lamps under centuries-old bodhi trees.
A WONDERFULLY WARM WELCOME
Sri Lankans have a really strong sense of community and they’re widely recognised as a friendly and welcoming nation. You’ll be greeted warmly with a smile, a slight bow as hands are pressed together and ‘Ayubowan’ which means ‘may you live long’.
BEACHES
Lots of people choose Sri Lanka as their go-to beach holiday and stay for weeks at a time. Go west for established beach resorts with everything you’ll possibly need, go south to get back to nature (choose between boutique, quirky and five star vibes), or go east for surf shacks or white sands (see p68-69).
TRIP NOTES
When to visit
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, with weather patterns that shift from coast to coast. The west and south are at their best from December to March, while the east coast comes into its own from April to September. If you’re travelling across the island, we’ll time your route to chase the sunshine and skip the showers, but always com prepared for the occasional downpour.
Getting there
There are daily direct flights to Sri Lanka with SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow into Colombo. Emirates fly into Colombo if you fancy stopping off in Dubai en route or choose to fly Etihad Airways or Qatar Airways and your stopover destination could be Abu Dhabi or Doha. Choosing these airlines means you have more options to fly from regional airports including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester.
Private chauffeur-guides
Travelling with a private chauffeurguide means your journey runs smoothly from start to finish. Along the way, they’ll share local insight, help you spot details you might otherwise miss, and adjust the pace to suit your style. Whether you’re in the mood to chat or prefer some quiet between stops, they’ll read the room. It’s a relaxed, flexible way to explore, and one of the reasons so many travellers come back talking about the people as much as the places.

FALL IN LOVE WITH SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka isn’t a place you simply visit. It’s a place you taste, feel, and immerse yourself in.
From high-altitude train rides to low-and-slow cooking, this island invites you to dive in feet first.
A JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER
Sri Lanka is the textbook touring destination. It has a buzzing capital, a heritage-packed Cultural Triangle, an eye-poppingly gorgeous Hill Country, and its chock full of wildlife-rich national parks too. And then there’s the coastline – golden postcard-worthy sands and pared-back barefoot vibes.
HOW TO DO IT
You could easily spend a week or a fortnight travelling around (you can dial it up or down depending on how long you have) and you can choose how much you want to keep on the move from place to place or use your hotel as a base for day trips. Our suggested itineraries have been shaped by our experience but none of them are set in stone. We can tweak how long you stop at each spot, the places you stay and how you get around. You’ll be back for a second and third-in-a-lifetime trip in no time.
A DREAM DESTINATION FOR FAMILIES
With friendly people, great food, and a huge variety of things to do, Sri Lanka is a natural fit for families. If you’ve got little ones, we’ll steer you to easy beach resorts with space to roam. Travelling with teens? Mix wildlife, culture, and activity for an itinerary that keeps them busy and engaged (and occasionally off their phones). Shangri-La Hambantota is a brilliant family base, or talk to us about a trip designed around your crew.
TAILORED HONEYMOONS
Romantic, scenic, and never one-size-fits-all, Sri Lanka is made for honeymoons with a difference. Watch the sunrise in Ella, ride the iconic Hill Country trains, chase waterfalls, and end the day with beachside cocktails. Round things off with a few days in the Maldives, and you’ve got the perfect twin-centre escape. If you’re an LGBTQ+ couple, we’ll build a honeymoon that feels right for you. Many of our LGBTQ+ team have travelled in Sri Lanka themselves and can offer honest, thoughtful advice to help you feel safe and celebrated.
FOR THE THRILL OF IT
Adventure here is woven into the landscape. Paddleboard through quiet lagoons at sunrise, hike to remote waterfalls, or white-water raft your way through forested river valleys. If you prefer altitude without the effort, hot air ballooning over the Cultural Triangle offers a serene, cinematic view of dawn breaking over ancient stupas and jungle canopies.

ALL ABOARD
Sri Lanka’s trains are more than transport, they’re an experience. The journey from Kandy to Ella is world-famous for good reason. Open windows, swinging doors, and tea fields rolling by like a green sea. It’s slow travel at its most romantic.
FROM THE AIR
Cinnamon Air is a premium domestic air taxi service that can take you from its hub in Colombo to every corner of the island, from the Cultural Triangle to the sands of the east coast. A great alternative to long road transfers and worth it for the views.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Sri Lanka offers rich culture, wildlife, and scenery, while the Maldives is all about calm seas and easy living. Together, they make a satisfying combination that feels both varied and well-paced.
Nuwara Eliya
A TASTE OF SRI LANKA
Ancient cities, highland views, and slow journeys through green hills. This is a compact itinerary that captures the depth and diversity of Sri Lanka in just one week.
SUGGESTED ROUTE
7 nights from Colombo
DAY 1, HABARANA
Your chauffer guide will meet you at the airport in Colombo and from there you’ll head inland to Sigiriya, deep in the Cultural Triangle. It’s about a 4-hour drive, but you’ll travel in a cool, airconditioned car and it’s a
great introduction to Sri Lanka if you gaze out the window en-route.
DAYS 2-3, HABARANA
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress and explore rural villages or wildlife parks nearby. You can choose to do a jeep safari Minneriya.
DAY 4, KANDY
Travel south to Kandy (about a 3-hour drive) for a city tour and visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most sacred shrines.
DAY 5-6, NUWARA ELIYA
From Kandy, you’ll board a train to Nuwara Eliya. It’s a scenic trip through Sri Lanka’s Tea Country,
passing through little villages and tea plantations and from here you can book a tour of a tea factory or simply relax and enjoy the beautiful views this area is so famous for.
DAY 7, NEGOMBO
Drive west to the coast and the beaches of Negombo for a touch of downtime.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS HOLIDAY
• See Sri Lanka’s cultural icons in one well-paced trip
• Explore with your own chauffeur-guide from start to finish
• Ride the scenic highland train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
• Stay in hotels that reflect the character of each region
• Perfect for a first visit or as part of a longer twin-centre holiday
WHEN TO GO
• January to March: dry and bright across most of the route
• July to September: a great time for the Cultural Triangle and tea country
• April and October: the shoulder months have fewer visitors
• November to December: occasional rain in November, but less so in December and still a good time to travel

MAKE IT YOUR OWN
This itinerary is just the starting point. We’ll help you tailor every detail, swapping in a favourite hotel, adding something active, or building out the trip with a beach or Indian Ocean extension.
WHERE TO STAY
In Nuwara Eliya, you might stay in one of Sri Lanka’s oldest but recently renovated heritage hotels. In Kandy, a riverside retreat offers a peaceful base near the city’s cultural core. Near Sigiriya, stay in a peaceful oasis with stunning views of Sigiriya Rock from an incredible infinity pool.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES
We’ve included guided tours of Sigiriya Rock and Kandy. Add a hot air balloon above the Cultural Triangle at sunrise, share a homecooked curry with a farming family, or take a private tasting tour at a working tea estate. You could add a safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla, depending on the season.
HOW LONG?
Seven nights gives you time for a well-balanced introduction to Sri Lanka. If you prefer a gentler pace, we can add extra nights in the tea country or the Cultural Triangle. The route also works well as part of a longer 10 to 14-night trip, whether you’re continuing through Sri Lanka or adding time by the coast.
ANOTHER STOP?
End with a few relaxed days on the beaches of Bentota or Tangalle, where the rhythm slows and the seafood is exceptional. Or fly on to the Maldives for white sand and overwater villas, just a 90-minute flight from Colombo. For something more urban, include a stop in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi.

You can stay here for a few nights (we recommend Uga Ullagala with its dreamy pool villas) and use it as a base for day trips to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress and a 4x4 safari in Wilpattu National Park. There’s plenty to do here, including archery and horse riding.
DAY 5-8, PASSIKUDAH

We’ve struck the perfect balance between educational-but-make-it-fun exploration in Colombo and the Cultural Triangle and time on the east coast shores where you can pretty much just chill for a few blissful days.
SRI LANKA HONEYMOON ADVENTURE
A honeymoon with a little bit of everything. Over 12 nights, you’ll explore Sri Lanka’s south coast, hill country, and wildest national park. You’ll stay in boutique spots with big views, move at your own pace with a private chauffeur-guide, with a few days on the beach to completely switch off. There’s history, nature, and plenty of time for a lie-in.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
11 nights from Colombo
DAYS 1-2, COLOMBO
Arrive in Colombo and take a private tour of this rapidly developing city with a local guide. Street food stalls, art deco corners, and oceanfront cocktails.
DAYS 3-4, KANDY
Your private chauffeur will pick you up and you’ll swap one city for another, heading into the heart of the island for a stay for two in bustling and beautiful
Kandy. The city is a cultural capital with the relics of The Kingdom of Kandy, a trio of 14th-Century temples and a lake. Our hotels here are outside the city – romantic boltholes to retreat to but just a short hop from the action.
DAYS 5-6, ELLA
The journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya will be vying for top spot when it comes to favourite honeymoon moments. The first leg is the drive from Kandy up to
Nuwara Eliya, a seriously scenic road trip that takes you up into Sri Lanka’s famed Hill Country. Then its time to embark on the unhurried and winding train journey of a lifetime to Ella amid terraces and tea plantations, past waterfalls and through mist-cloaked forests.
DAYS 7-8, YALA
The focus shifts from the lofty landscapes of the Hill Country to the island’s famed wildlife. On your
included Yala safari, keep your eyes trained for the elusive leopard, herds of Asian elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo and more than 200 species of birds.
DAYS 9-11, TANGALLE
There’s no need for the culture vs beach compromise common in many honeymoon decisions: a stay on the south coast in Tangalle rounds off your holiday of a lifetime.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS HOLIDAY
• An adventurous yet utterly relaxing honeymoon
• Private chauffeur-guide for a smooth inland journey
• Handpicked hotels chosen for comfort, privacy, and charm

WILD PLACES, MEMORYMAKING MOMENTS
Remote, raw, and full of life, Sri Lanka’s national parks offer extraordinary opportunities to observe nature in its element. Each one has a distinct character. Whether you’re hoping to see leopards, elephants, or simply experience the quiet intensity of being surrounded by wilderness, there’s a park that fits.
YALA
Best for: leopard sightings and classic safaris
Sri Lanka’s most well-known national park is often associated with leopard sightings. It’s a dramatic landscape of rocky outcrops, dry scrubland, and coastal lagoons, home to elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, and a vibrant mix of birdlife. Game drives here can be fast-paced and exciting, particularly in the early morning. Stay nearby at places like Uga Chena Huts or Cinnamon Wild, where the comfort matches the setting.
WILPATTU
Best for: quiet safaris and patient wildlife watching Larger than Yala but far less developed, Wilpattu offers a more peaceful, measured experience. Its forest is dense and dotted with natural lakes called villus, where animals gather quietly. Leopard sightings here are rarer and feel more meaningful. The park’s size and remoteness give it a sense of space that invites patience and attention to detail. Stay close by in a Thamaravila or in the lap of luxury in Anuradhapura.
GAL OYA
Best for: boat safaris and off-grid adventure
Gal Oya sits quietly in the east, away from the main routes. It offers something entirely different: the chance to explore by boat. Elephants are occasionally seen swimming between islands on the reservoir, and birdwatching here is superb. It’s a deeply tranquil park, where the water is as much a part of the safari as the land. Go for the remote, wifi-free Gal Oya Lodge or the cosy glamping village of Wild Glamping Gal Oya.
UDAWALAWE
Best for: guaranteed elephants and easy access
Udawalawe is one of the best places in the country to see elephants, often in large numbers. The terrain is open and grassy, which means wildlife viewing tends to be straightforward and rewarding. It’s a popular choice for those who want reliable sightings without long waits, and a great introduction to Sri Lanka’s wild side. Stay at the newly-opened Waraka, constructed almost completely of recycled materials and a perfect base for exploring Udawalawe.

These properties aren’t about size or status. They’re about soul, design, and the kind of care that only comes when there are fewer rooms and more time for detail.
A JUNGLE ESCAPE
WHERE? TABULA RASA, NEAR GALLE
Set into a hillside on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Tabula Rasa offers quiet modernism surrounded by forest. Each of the 24 rooms feels tucked away, with long views across the treetops and space to fully unwind. The design is pared back but clever, with nature doing most of the work and, handily, the rooms come equipped with binoculars to scan for wildlife, including monkeys.
A KANDY CLASSIC, REIMAGINED WHERE? COFFEE BUNGALOW, KANDY
Once a 19th-century home, Coffee Bungalow blends old structure with contemporary style. Perched above the city, it has just a few light-filled rooms and a pool with outstanding views of Kandy Lake and the city. It’s personal, polished, and full of charm without fuss.
BAREFOOT BY THE BEACH
WHERE? KK BEACH, NEAR GALLE
At KK Beach, everything faces the sea. Clean lines, crisp linen and full-length windows let the light in, while the interiors reflect a love of local art and nautical simplicity. With just ten rooms, there’s a restorative atmosphere that we love for those final few days after a cross-country Sri Lankan adventure.
TEA COUNTRY, SLOW AND STEADY WHERE? NINE SKIES, NEAR ELLA
Nine Skies sits above a railway line near Ella, in a former tea planter’s bungalow restored with care. It has five rooms, wide verandas, and a garden that spills into the valley. Expect to be pampered – butlers are on hand to shake a cocktail or light a fire, and the all-inclusive approach invites you to relax from start to finish.
A HILLSIDE HIDEAWAY WHERE? UGA HALLOOWELLA, NEAR KANDY
Set in a century- old planter’s bungalow amid tea - estate hills near Kandy, Uga Halloowella is calm, refined, and intimate. With just six rooms, it feels exclusive without being showy. The shared infinity pool has the best view in Sri Lanka – elevated high over Castlereigh Reservoir. Past guests gush about the dining, which is fresh and thoughtful and delivered with service that’s warm but unobtrusive. It’s a place to slow down, soak in the highland air, and linger long into the evening.

SRI LANKA BY THE SHORE
Sri Lanka works beautifully as both a dedicated beach escape and as the coastal finale to a longer island adventure.
WEST
Best weather: November to April
The west is the quintessential Sri Lankan beach escape, and the sands here are wide and golden, with swimmable waters much of the year. Negombo is the closest to the airport, making it a good option for either starting or ending your trip, while Kalutara is a little quieter. Taj Bentota Resort & Spa has bright modern rooms and elevated views of the sea from its cliffside perch, and Sentido Heritance Negombo has beach-facing rooms, friendly service, and a winding pool. It’s also mere steps from a great choice of local restaurants. Its prime season during the northern hemisphere winter. Days are warm, the skies are mostly clear, and the seas are at their calmest. It is also the busiest time of year, especially in January and February, when local festivals and the holiday season bring extra buzz to towns like Negombo and Bentota.
SOUTH
Best weather: November to April
Stretching from Galle to Hambantota, the south coast blends golden beaches with a sense of discovery. Small coves and rocky headlands frame the shoreline. Inland, you can explore Koggala Lake’s mangroves or the bird-rich wetlands of Bundala National Park. In Galle, The Fortress Resort & Spa combines oceanfront relaxation with a touch of history, and further along the coast, Shangri-La Hambantota offers space for the whole family, from its kids club and splash zone to an adults-only wing for peaceful escapes. Whale watching season runs from November to April, peaking between December and March, so this is the time to take a boat trip from Mirissa. Inland, national parks like Udawalawe are alive with birdlife, and conditions are ideal for trips to markets, temples, or tea plantations.
EAST
Best weather: May to September
Quieter than the west or south, the east coast is known for its white-sand beaches and calm, shallow bays, especially from May to September when the weather is at its best. This is when the turquoise shallows of Passikudah and the quiet sands of Trincomalee come into their own. Snorkelling conditions are excellent, with calm water and good visibility for spotting coral and tropical fish. July and August are the driest months — ideal for a family trip in the school summer holidays — while early September can bring slightly cooler mornings. In Passikudah, Maalu Maalu offers a laid-back, barefoot atmosphere perfect for families. At Karpaha Sands, elegant, tented suites sit on a secluded stretch of the Passikudah coast. Inside, you’ll find spacious, beautifully styled interiors, and outside, nothing but sand and sea. Further north in Trincomalee, Uga Jungle Beach hides among coastal forest that spills onto the sand, giving a castaway feel without losing modern comforts.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO
We’re full of ideas for things to do as day trips to break up days by the beach.
THE WEST COAST
If you’re into architecture, the Lunuganga Estate Experience is just the ticket. This lakeside retreat on the banks of the Dedduwa Lake is the former home of architectural luminary, Geoffrey Bawa – hugely influential in Asian design for magnificently blending modernism with nature in tropical landscapes.
The Mangrove Conservation Project is on a mission to revive the mangroves of Koggala Lagoon. They absorb twice as much carbon dioxide as tropical rainforests, helping maintain good water quality, filter pollutants, and protect shorelines from erosion. It’s handson and you’ll have the chance to plant seedling mangroves.
THE SOUTH COAST
Weligama Bay is the centre of surf culture on the south coast of Sri Lanka and an ideal spot to learn, whether you’re a beginner or looking to finesse your skills.
The Elephant Transit Home is who are rehabilitated back to full health before being returned to the wild. Great lengths are taken to minimise contact between the baby elephants, that once old enough to survive alone, will be free to roam Udawalawe National Park.
THE EAST COAST
Learn how to make a delicious crab curry and take the taste of Sri Lanka home with you. On a cooking course, you’ll visit a local guesthouse and create this east coast speciality with crabs from nearby shallow lagoons.
A half or full day Jeep game drive takes you through Kumana National Park, an eco-tourism sanctuary home to this bird species including herons, pelicans and egrets as well as the rare blacknecked stork. All are drawn to the 200 hectare natural mangrove swamp. A must for twitchers.
DAZZLING DUBAI
If your journey to the Indian Ocean takes you through Dubai, it’s well worth staying for a couple of days to see what the city can really offer.
Forget the idea that Dubai is just one thing. It is a patchwork of districts, each with its own pace, personality, and skyline. You might be tempted by the buzz of the Marina, the history and spice-scented souks along the Creek, or the seclusion of a resort on the Palm. We can help match you to the spot that fits your style, then build in the experiences that will make your stopover as memorable as your final destination.
DOWNTOWN DUBAI
This is the city’s centrepiece, anchored by the Burj Khalifa, where a lift ride takes you to one of the highest observation decks in the world. At its feet sits The Dubai Mall, home to more shops than you could ever visit in one trip, an ice rink and a 30-metre indoor waterfall. In the evening, the fountains dance to music, best enjoyed from a terrace table nearby. Retreat afterwards to Grand Hyatt Dubai on the edge of the creek with amazing skyline views – a fab resort-style hotel in the centre of the city.
MARINA & JBR
Curving around turquoise water, the Marina has the buzz of a modern waterfront and a mix of yachts, high-rise apartments, and restaurants where you can linger over mezze. Stroll along The Walk in JBR and you’ll pass boutique shops, pavement cafés, and a stretch of golden sand. Two great options here are JA Ocean View Hotel, which has rooms that gaze straight out to the Gulf, and Amwaj Rotana, which pairs generous spaces with warmly attentive service to ease you effortlessly into holiday mode.
PALM JUMEIRAH
Seen from above, this man-made island is an icon, each frond of the palm edged with villas and resorts. At its crescent tip, Atlantis The Palm is a playground for all ages, with a waterpark, aquarium, and more than 30 dining options. For a slower pace, Anantara The Palm brings Maldivian overwater villas and Thaiinspired spa rituals to Dubai. A monorail runs along the Palm’s spine, offering a changing panorama that ends with the full sweep of the city on one side and the open Gulf on the other.
OLD DUBAI
Across the Creek, the city’s history comes into focus. In Deira’s gold and spice souks, polished bangles gleam beneath hanging lamps, and burlap sacks spill over with cinnamon, saffron, and cardamom. The Al Fahidi Historical District is a warren of narrow lanes, sand-coloured walls, and wind-tower houses now filled with art galleries and museums. An abra ride across the water takes only a few minutes, yet feels like stepping back decades. It is here that Dubai’s story began, long before its towers touched the clouds.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO
THE SOUKS OF OLD DUBAI
Lose yourself in the maze of market streets where jewellers, spice merchants, and textile traders have been plying their craft for generations. The Gold Souk glitters under the weight of elaborate designs, while the Spice Souk tempts with fragrant piles of saffron, cinnamon, and rose petals.
THE TOP OF THE WORLD
Ride the lift to the observation decks of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on the planet, for sweeping views of desert, sea, and city. Time it for sunset and linger at a terrace café to see the Dubai Fountain show burst into life below.
ESCAPE TO THE DESERT
Within an hour of the city, the skyscrapers give way to rolling dunes. Join a guided safari to try sandboarding before the sun sets. Evenings end with grilled meats, Arabic coffee, and a night sky so clear you can pick out constellations with the naked eye.
MAKE A SPLASH AND MORE Atlantis The Palm’s Aquaventure Waterpark promises a full day of fun, with splash zones for little ones, lazy rivers for the whole family, and record-breaking slides for thrillseekers. Beyond the water, theme parks such as Motiongate and Legoland add rides, shows, and play zones for all ages to the mix.
WALK THE WATERFRONT
Dubai Marina’s boardwalk is lined with restaurants serving everything from Lebanese grills to Japanese sushi. Watch yachts glide past under strings of fairy lights or stop for gelato with a view of the highrises reflected in the water.
DINE YOUR WAY AROUND
Dubai’s dining scene covers everything from fragrant shawarma at tiny cafés to the culinary theatre of its Michelin-starred restaurants. Indulge in modern French cuisine at STAY by Yannick Alléno, or experience the creative tasting menus at Ossiano.
EMIRATES BEYOND DUBAI
Dubai might be considered the UAE’s headline act, but it is not the only way to begin your Arabian adventure. You can fly directly into Abu Dhabi, rich in culture and coastline, or land in Dubai and head to Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah
ABU DHABI
Abu Dhabi blends cultural depth with lavish luxury. The smooth curve of the Corniche frames the city’s waterfront with paths and beaches for biking and walking. On nearby Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi pairs global art with striking architecture beside soft white sands. Yas Island delivers pure entertainment with Ferrari World, home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster, along with Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros. World, one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands as a serene architectural masterpiece, offering a moment of stillness in an otherwise vibrant city.
RAS AL KHAIMAH
Ras Al Khaimah is all about natural drama, where the Hajar Mountains meet quiet, sand-fringed shores. If you want to kickstart your holiday, you’ll find adrenaline at Jais Flight zipline, which stretches for almost 1.8 miles and soars across rugged canyons at speeds of up to 93 miles per hour. Prefer to ease into your trip? Coastal mangroves provide a quieter contrast and are lovely for a sunset paddle.
AJMAN
Ajman is modest in size but rich in character. This emirate moves at a gentler tempo, with a soft-sand Corniche ideal for warm, evening strolls. Its historic side is on display at Ajman Museum, housed in an 18th-century fort that was once the ruler’s residence, where wind towers, ancient manuscripts, and artefacts stretch back centuries. There is charm in simplicity here, yet it is close enough to Dubai that you can dip into the city’s energy and return to Ajman’s quiet embrace in the same afternoon.
UAE MULTI CENTRES
Yes, the UAE is the transit point for heading east on a bigger holiday, but there’s so much to do here, it’s firmly made itself a destination to holiday in its own right. You can fly from regional airports in the UK, the weather’s good year round and it’s especially good in our winter when it’s a little cooler. And you can mix it up without even leaving the UAE – contrast the malls and waterparks of Dubai with the beaches of Abu Dhabi or quieter Ajman. Ras al Khaimah can be a more budget-friendly option for a beach stay after a few days in Dubai and it’s in Ras al Khaimah where you can treat yourself to a desert stay in a luxury tented pool villa.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO
Swap skyscraper-spotting for mountain ziplines, mangroves, and museums. These ideas prove there’s plenty of fun to be had on a stopover.
CULTURE THAT WOWS
In Abu Dhabi, step under a vast, latticed dome where the sunlight dances across galleries filled with art from around the world. Ajman offers a smaller-scale slice of history, with its own coastal fort whispering stories from centuries past.
FAMILY-SIZED FUN
Yas Island in Abu Dhabi is basically one big grin waiting to happen. There’s the rollercoaster that breaks records, a waterpark that soaks up entire afternoons, and a cartoonthemed world. In the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, a toboggan-style ride lets you zip downhill on an unforgettable thrill ride.
WILD MOMENTS
Trade city traffic for dune tracks and you might just meet a gazelle or oryx on your morning walk. Desert foxes hide in the shade, birds wade through the mangroves, and when the sun sets, the sky turns into a planetarium. Paddle a kayak, and it is just you, the herons, and the sound of your oar slicing through the water.
BEACH YOUR WAY
Soft white sand in Abu Dhabi. Palm-lined shorelines in Ajman. Endless stretches in Ras Al Khaimah with mountains on the horizon. Each has its own personality, whether you want to swim, stroll, or simply sit and feast on some world-class cuisine.
KNOW YOUR EMIRATES
Each emirate has its own defining style: Dubai has its space-age skyline and hi-tech attractions; Abu Dhabi is the largest and most arty and palatial; tiny Ajman feels more cultural and Ras Al Khaimah is all about nature and wilderness.
DYNAMIC DOHA
Many UK travellers got their first glimpse of Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but Doha is far more than a stadium backdrop. It’s a city where cutting-edge architecture shares the skyline with ornate mosques, and where you can spend one afternoon browsing the boutiques of The Pearl and the next haggling for spices in Souq Waqif.
GETTING THERE
Flying direct from London, Manchester, or Edinburgh, you can be in Doha in around seven hours. That’s just enough time for a film, a meal, and a short nap before stepping into year-round warmth.
CULTURE AND HISTORY
At the Museum of Islamic Art, you can peruse centuries-old manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics. Just along the Corniche, the National Museum of Qatar immerses you in the country’s heritage through bold architecture and interactive exhibits. Souq Waqif remains a favourite for stepping into the past with its mazelike alleys lined with spice stalls, tailors, and tiny cafés.
DESERT AND MANGROVES
Less than an hour’s drive from the city, the desert opens up into ochre dunes that drop dramatically into the sea at Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea. Join a 4x4 safari for dune-bashing thrills or a quieter sunset picnic. For a softer landscape, paddle through the Al Thakira Mangroves, where herons and flamingos gather in calm waters.
SHOPPING AND DINING
Doha is serious about both. The Pearl delivers high-end brands and waterfront restaurants in a setting that feels like a Mediterranean harbour. Katara Cultural Village blends artisan boutiques with exhibition spaces and open-air performances. For food, Michelin-starred menus sit happily alongside sizzling grills at Souq Waqif, where you can grab a late-night mezze platter or a cardamom-scented coffee.
BEACH AND WATERPARKS
Public beaches are rare in Doha, but hotel resorts offer private stretches of sand with loungers, watersports, and poolside dining. An hour away at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas you’ll find Desert Falls Water and Adventure Park which packs in slides, surf simulators, and lazy rivers. It’s a hit with families or anyone who wants to swap sightseeing for splash time.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
If it’s your first time to the region, our travel experts have helpful advice to help you make the most of your visit.
DRESS FOR THE CLIMATE AND THE CULTURE
Lightweight clothing works best for the heat, but pack something modest for visiting mosques and markets. Shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women.
FRIDAY IS THE SLOW DAY
Friday prayers mean many shops and museums open later in the day. Plan a lazy morning by the pool, then head out to explore in the afternoon or evening.
BOOK YOUR DESERT ADVENTURES
Dune bashing and the Inland Sea adventures can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. We can help you plan your activities before you go, so you don’t miss out.
SOUQ WAQIF IS BEST AT NIGHT
Go after sunset when the air is cooler and the atmosphere is buzzing. It’s when the spice stalls are fragrant, the falcons are out, and the street food is sizzling.
TAKE TO THE WATER
Try wake surfing, wakeboarding and stand-up paddleboarding at the Pearl-Qatar, kayak through the mangroves at Al Thakhira beach or learn how to kite surf at Fuwairit Beach. Set sail on a traditional dhow or explore Qatar’s underwater world with a shipwreck dive.
NEXT STOP, THE BEACH
From Doha you can fly onwards to the Maldives and the Seychelles. Both take just over four and half hours. An extra hour and a half and you could be heading to Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania.
