STEPPING OUT AT THE PARTY - A UK REPRESENTED DANE

Often grouped with other wellknown Danish minimalists such as Helle Helle, Christina Hesselholdt had her breakthrough in the nineties. Employing lists to tell everyday stories, she is often referred to as the master of tightly composed associations. Poetic and humorous, her stories portray characters who face everyday battles with those messy and wonderful relationships that people can and can’t live without.

Among Danish authors, she stands out for her recent shift to a UK agency, Rogers, Coleridge & White, where her four part volume Selskabet (Companions) has recently gained international momentum. Agent Laurence Laluyaux, who represents a growing number of non-Anglophone authors, met Hesselholdt last summer at the Louisiana Literary Festival, and recognized the writer’s talent, positioning her

alongside writers such as Kazuo Ishiguro and Zadie Smith. Laluyaux writes, “I was impressed by the fragmented aspect of her writing, the changes of perspectives in the narration and her eccentric yet vivid characters. What I loved is that she manages to combine all these elements with warmth and great humour. Looking at the world and human nature through her eyes is exhilarating.”

VIVIAN MAIER: A LIFE OF HIDDEN ARTISTRY Vivian Maier (1926-2009), a poor, quiet nanny working in affluent New York and Chicago, who when she died, left behind over 100,000 film negatives stuffed in a locker, having captured the marvels and peculiarities of urban America from the second half of the twentieth century.

In her latest novel, Hesselholdt brings to life the intensly private and enigmatic street photographer, letting her speak for herself, as she tells the story of her tough childhood, her life as a nanny and her lifelong preoccupation with photography. A chorus of voices step in at intervals; family members, the children she cared for, employers

and a narrator that wholeheartedly embraces her subject, creating a portrait of a passionate woman, living out her artistic dreams for the sake of art alone, without any desire for public recognition.

CHRISTINA HESSELHOLDT, born in 1962, studied at the Danish Academy of Creative Writing in Copenhagen and published her first novel, Køkkenet, Gravkammeret & Landskabet (The kitchen, the tomb & the landscape) in 1991, which is part one in her trilogy about Marlon.

She has since written several novels, and books for children, and is often noted for Camilla and the Horse (2013, original title), which was selected for Dalkey Archive’s

Best European Fiction anthology.

The follow-up and stand-alone novel, Selskabet (Companions), from 2015, drew together four short volumes centring on the young woman, Camilla, and her circle of friends. She has received critical acclaim and awards for her books, including the Beatrice Prize in 2007, the Jytte Borberg Prize in 2007 and the Critics’ Prize in 2010.

The Blixen Prize and the Danish Broadcasting Coporation’s Best Novel Award – Critical Applause for Quiet Realism 2016 was a spectacular year for Ida Jessen’s En ny tid (A Change in Time) (2015), as it was awarded both the Danish Broadcasting Coporation’s Best Novel Award and the Danish Writers Association’s Blixen Award for ‘Best Fiction of the Year’. Her novels have earned her a prominent position in the Nordic realist narrative tradition. The latest novel, En ny tid, follows the young school teacher Lilly Høy, who moves to the western part of Denmark in

1904 to start a free-school, with nothing but a diary, some flowers and some kindling. Twenty years later, as her husband is dying, she unearths the old diary to find new meaning in life and love.

The European Union Prize for Literature, spotlighting the diverse wealth of Europe’s contemporary literature, was awarded to Bjørn Rasmussen in spring 2016, for his novel, Huden er det elastiske hylster der omgiver hele legemet (The Skin Is the Elastic Covering that Encases the Entire Body) from 2011.

The coming-of-age novel, clearly inspired by David Lynch, is both prose and poetry, social realism and autobiography. The story follows a young man who reflects on his childhood in rural Denmark, his obsession and attachment to a much older male riding instructor, bleak teenage years, identity crisis and dysfunctional families.

The Jury writes, “The idiosyncratic yet highly assured prose and poetry is wild, untrammelled and defies all taboos. And despite its reckless confrontation with despair, it manages to move, fascinate and

shock the reader with its glittering, undeniable beauty.”

The novel Enmandstelt (One-Man Tent) is a tragi-comic tale of going from the hell of war to the horror of boredom. 17 year old Bosnian Miki flees the tents of a Croatian refugee camp, and after several days of illegally making his way across Europe, he makes it to Copenhagen in December 1994. He is just short of his goal, Sweden, and his beloved big brother Neno. In Copenhagen a series of unfortunate events, and advice from a human trafficker, lead to a refugee camp, where time stops for him, on the Danish island Funen, sharing a room with four others, as he waits for a sign from his brother.

1994. His critically acclaimed poetry collection from 2009, Første gang tilbage (Back for the First Time), was followed by his debut novel in 2011, Ukulele-Jam, (a precursor and stand-alone to Enmandstelt).

The novel was nominated for Weekendavisen’s literature award. In 2012, he was awarded a three-year working grant by the Danish Arts Foundation.

His tragic tale is gradually woven into the fabric of his new Spanish family’s history, leaving a mark on the generations that follow, from Costa del Sol in the 1960s to the present day. Born in 1972, BIRGITHE KOSOVI is a Serbian-Danish journalist and author, whose novel from 2010, Det dobbelte land (The Doubled Country), that captured her family’s story in the former Yugoslavia, won the Weekendavisen Literature prize, The Novel of the Year award from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation and Danske Bank’s Literature prize in 2011. Den inderste fare (The Danger Within) is her fourth novel, and Weekendavisen writes, “One is fascinated, dismayed and enchanted...

It succeeds so beautifully, upon such a tragic backdrop.”

WWII OCCUPIED COPENHAGEN Benn Q. Holm’s love for Copenhagen is clearly apparent in his latest novel, as the city lies under arrest during the German occupation, and in the jubilant, but rocky years that follow the war.

Along with a few other law students, Karen and Ebbe join the resistance movement in 1943, and find their daily lives in the city driven and haunted by acts of sabotage. One night an operation gets out of control, two men are killed and Ebbe has to escape to Sweden.

Everyone has secrets, lies, and dreams, in the Copenhagen that Ebbe returns to in May 1945. The young couple try to find their way back to normality, even though Ebbe is not the father of Karen’s baby, ghosts of their dead comrades linger, and

their distinctly different experience of the war is a constant dividing factor between them. The German occupation was difficult, but finding peace and moving on with their lives is even more challenging.

BENN Q. HOLM, born in 1962, had his debut as a novelist in 1994 with Til verdens ende (To the End of the World). His breakthrough came in 1998 with Hafnia Punk (Hafnia Punk) and his novel, Album (Album) from 2002 has been adapted as a TV series. He has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the Danish Arts Foundation’s three-year working grant.

20 pages into this novel, and its descriptions of remote, windswept slopes and fjords, bring a reader right to the southern tip of the Faroe Islands. It is a contemporary portrait of the country, and a story about our notion of a home, and the longing for it, which remains, even when we are scattered to the wind in a globalised world.

SIRI RANVA HJELM JACOBSEN, born 1971, is a correspondent, who has lived in London for many years, and worked for several major newspapers and magazines. Her family is from the Faroe Islands. This is her debut novel.

It’s summer in the little town Tasiilaq, eastern Greenland. The sun never sets on this city of sleepless people fumbling around in the light, living, dreaming and dying while war rages in Europe. The novel begins and ends with Carina, a woman suffering from cancer who spends her days keeping an eye on the city and its many lives and stories – some tragic, others comic and, as so often with Kim Leine’s books, with a focus on violence, sex, misunderstandings, and a touch of dark humor. De søvnløse (The Sleepless) is a novel that constantly switches perspective from one character to the next, like a musical composition.

ANCIENT ORIGINS OF MODERN LOVE Two narratives, two half-siblings.

Unknown to each other, one in Paris and the other Denmark, they slowly discover a mysterious, shared past.

Nadia Nazir, an anthropologist, lives in tunnels under Paris. Along with other misfits, they establish Sapiens, a collective that scientifically explores cohabitation, where sex is the binding factor.

KIM LEINE

NIELS LYNGSØ, born in 1968, is a well-known poet and translator, among others, of Marcel Proust. In 2015, he published Min ukendte bror (My Unkown Brother), a precursor, and stand-alone piece, to the latest novel. Weekendavisen wrote about Min ukendte bror, “It is a splendid enlightenment project, a Rubik’s cube in novel form, a psychological mystery and an existential exploration.”

KIM LEINE, born 1961, is a Danish-Norwegian author. He made his debut in 2007 with the autobiographical novel Kalak (Kalak).

The great historical novel Profeterne I Evighedsfjorden (The Prophets of Eternal Fjord) (2012) has been sold to 20 countries, and was awarded, among others, the Nordic Council Literature Prize, the Danish Book Award and Politiken’s Literary Award.

He has also received the Danish Arts Foundation prestigious three-year scholarship.

Nadia’s boyfriend, Baartman, and their shared son Adam, disappear.

Soon after, she is contacted by a man claiming to be her half-brother, HansPeter Frederiksen, who has travelled from Denmark to Switzerland to visit his dying father, Hemming, and to find out more about his half-sister. Yet Hemming has his own reasons for a reunion, connected to a secret project he worked on during the Cold War that had far-reaching consequences for mankind. He wants Hans-Peter

to help him find his 94 year old boss, the recluse. The story of the sexually curious Nadia is told in retrospect, as she grows up in a collective in Paris in the 70s, and conduct her field work in the 80s; sex clubs, French rave parties, and apes. Her search for Baartman and Adam leads to an unexpected turn in her relationship to her retired parents.

Throughout the book, Amiri returns to her ’Desert wanderings’, referring to the time she spent on her own as a new Danish citizen, having escaped domestic violence. At 24 she emerges as the model citizen, educated and

FAMILY BREAKS AND TIES Just like every living thing, families adapt and survive. Bjørk decides to stay with her parents over the summer, on the beautiful, cliff-lined, little island of Møn. Karen and Jens have just moved there from Greenland, to be closer to their three children and grandchildren. Deep in the countryside, in a little Danish town, there’s a summerhouse where grandfather used to go on his own sometimes. When he passes away, his children and grandchildren spend a couple of days cleaning up the old place and packing away the old man’s things. The unearthed dusty piles stir up the conversation among them, and they share their memories, talk things through and even argue at times, as a variety of family secrets are unveiled, as well as the actual thing that drew grandfather back to the place on his own so often.

Overweight, and dodging work requests from the welfare office, she counts her days until an early pension, while working off an old personal debt, helping her best friend, a policeman, manage his underground brothel and supporting Sixten, her addict twin brother. Yet Elvira’s opening sales pitch for the prostitutes, as politically incorrect as it is comic, subtly reveals that under the well-manicured toes of a shy, lonely woman, there’s a savy anti-hero, with a heart as strong as an ox.

When one of the young Thai girls disappears, Elvira is offered a seedy deal by her friend to save the woman from a terrible fate, while at the same time she needs to come up with a large sum of money to ensure the dealers don’t take Sixten’s fingers as payment. Meanwhile, Elvira tries to

keep a low, ’sick’ profile, milking the system while avoiding work programs at the welfare office.

The woman with the handshake ‘like a fat slug’, finds that some relationships are more destructive than they are sweet. With a little unexpected help, and her own hidden talents, she makes sure that the ending is a happy one.

ANNE-SOPHIE LUNDINGSØRENSEN, born in 1969, has a Master’s in Film and Media Studies.

In 2010 she published her debut novel Lette rejsende (Traveling Light), followed by Fald (Downfall) in 2014.

Sam Productions acquired the film and TV serial rights early to her latest novel, Happy Ending, the first book in the planned trilogy with Elvira Gregersen.

1787, a violent rebellion breaks out on the slave ship Hope. In the middle of the chaos, the young newlywed wives of the captain and ship doctor are held captive in the cargo hold. One of them is brutally killed, before the rebellion can be put out.

Many years later, Marie, the young daughter of Captain Frederiksen, is allowed to join the crew of her father’s glorious sailing ship, as they sail from Copenhagen to western Denmark. But the voyage drastically switches course, as her father is detained below deck, and the ship heads for the Danish West Indies. Before they can reach the coast, the truth and their lives, will have been forever changed.

the reasons that Denmark grew so wealthy from the slave and sugar trade is because it remained neutral throughout the great wars around 1800. The Danes made sure not to interfere with the wars, so that they could work at keeping their ports open and concentrate on making money. In 1807, the war between Denmark and England broke out, and for a period, Danish ships sailed the oceans only with great risk. Eventually the competition from other sugarproducing, tropical countries and the advent of the sugar beet in Europe ended the West Indian adventure. The Danes had little use for the islands, or slavery, and the islands were sold to the U.S. in 1917.

MICH VRAA, born in 1954, spent over fifteen years working as a newspaper reporter before becoming a full-time writer and literary translator in 1995, including translating titles by Jeffrey Eugenides, Annie Proulx,

John Williams, Jonathan Franzen and Ernest Hemingway. In 2014 he won the Danish Translator Society’s Honorary award. He has written over 20 novels, including crime novels, children’s and young adult books.

Haabet (Hope) is a grim portrait of an all too readily forgotten time, when Denmark created new wealth off the backs of slaves working the sugar plantations in the West Indies. Yet under the weight of cynical exploitation and unthinkable evil, hope and the determination to survive, miraculously persevere. The title of your book and the slave ship, Hope, is both slightly ironic and inspiring. What are the different sides to this novel?

I wanted to do two things. I wanted to tell the Danes about the time leading up to the abolition of slavery, where boasts of early prohibition by law in 1792, meant that planters had 10 years to accumulate a large number of slaves before the trade was outlawed, and they ended up transporting more slaves than ever before. Danish writer Thorkild Hansen wrote three non-fiction books about it in the 1960s, with great sarcastic indignation, but few Danes have read them.

Secondly, I wanted to write an entertaining story. I love frigates, the sea, the nature in the Caribbean; the antithesis of Denmark. Settlers who wanted to start anew, felt that it might be possible in the Caribbean and America. Their stories are fantastic and I would like to write more books about them.

Can you briefly describe the transformation of your two main characters?

Michael Eide, the naïve humanist, is thrown like a fish out of water into something he can’t really grasp. He’s an educated fool who travels to the other side of the world to write a book because he thinks it will help free the slaves, but he has no real know-how. He ends up being so bewildered by power and lust that he is coaxed into acting in a way that was previously unimaginable to him.

‘

Maria, on the other hand, is a bit of a teenage-girl hero, who goes from being very naïve to becoming a very capable (and wealthy) young woman, who wants to better the lives of the slaves. By the end of the novel, it is obvious that she plans to leave Denmark. She feels more at home in the Caribbean, and wants to make a difference, which isn’t possible in her small Danish town. The story actually ends with a sort of beginning.

I see the young boy who weeps in the sugar field, because he is too young for the harsh work; I see his sister, twelve or thirteen years old, leaving the overseer’s cabin, holding her bundled-up dress, her face blank with humiliation. I see as many as I can, for the people they are, and in that way, my empathy and my feeling of responsibility grows.

I think the other white people here see it differently. I think they turn their backs on the atrocities and close their eyes to the crime; and because they do, their empathy dies, their responsibility is repressed.

Translation can often be the work of square pegs and round holes, but where there’s a will, there’s a way, through (most) linguistic borders. This article presents three translators who have gone to great efforts to seek out, translate and promote Danish literature.

In 2015, the Danish Arts Foundation held a summer translation conference in Roskilde, with workshops and networking possibilities for translators from around the world. They are working to repeat that success in 2017 and hope that translators will keep an eye out for the opportunities they offer, as well as looking into the grants for sample translations and subsidies for publishers.

MICHAEL GOLDMAN To help his romancing a Danish girl 31 years ago, American Translator Michael Goldman taught himself Danish one summer by translating Catcher in the Rye. He later worked in construction for many years, and was a fervent reader of Danish literature, but the idea of translating never occurred to him again, until the close friend of one of his jazz bandmates passed away in 2012. As a comforting gesture he translated a poem about death and loss by Benny Andersen. Other poems caught his attention, one thing led to another, and after translating 75 poems, he contacted the author, who was impressed with his work. Eventually they met and worked together, publishing dozens of poems, as well as a forthcoming dual-language edition of Andersen poems. Goldman has gone on to translate several other works, which have all been self-directed, including farming poetry by Knud Sørensen and a novel by Cecil Bødker, Fortællinger omkring Tavs (Stories about Tacit), published by Spuyten Duyvil Press in 2016, who will also publish his translation of Marianne Kouda Hansen poems and Knud Sønderby essays in 2017.

Although one of his Marianne Kouda Hansen poems was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize, he still experiences occasional skepticism from culturally disparaging Danes. “Aren’t they too Danish?” they ask, but for Goldman, it is exactly that ‘too Danish’ perspective that is worth knowing. “We non-Danes can go through life without ever experiencing a Danish perspective on family, religion, post-modernism, or whatever. But when we do… we gain new attitudes within ourselves.” Of course it helps that as a translator he is incredibly driven, and that the Danish Arts Foundation has provided publishers grants, to help subsidize marketing and production costs.

”The two words in Danish I fear the most are ’kolonihavehus’ (allotment) and ’SFO’ (afterschool daycare). To Spanish readers, most of the social benefits you have in Denmark sound like they are part of another galaxy,” writes Blanca Ortiz Ostalé, who has worked for at least sixteen different publishing houses in Spain, translating everything from Danish classics like Martin Andersen Nexø to contemporary writers such as Kirsten Thorup and Carsten Jensen.

The Dutch, in particular, says translator and artist Angélique de Kroon, are fond of Danish films, series, design and culture, because of their similar social structures. Acquiring Dutch publishers look for typical Danish elements, Danish locations and particularly Danish protagonists. Amongst many works, de Kroon has translated Hanne-Vibeke Holst’s Kronprinsessen (2007) into Dutch and most recently, Erik Valeur’s Logbog fra et livsforlis (Diary of a Shipwrecked Life) (2016).

Ostalé started her career as a literary translator in 1995, when by chance she was given the opportunity to translate Henrik Pontoppidans Ørneflugt. It was a collaboration between two friends and the teeth grinding translation was included in Cien años de cuentos nórdicos, published by Ediciones de la Torre.

She says the books she translates these days end up on her desk because the Spanish publisher acquired the rights and reached out to her, or because she contacts the publisher directly with a suggestion. In most cases though, publishers rarely pay attention to suggestions from translators who appear out of the blue. Therefore, in 2013, she founded a Facebook group, which now has 800 followers, “Literatura danesa en traducción”, where she works on conveying the works from a variety of Danish writers.

In 2011, on a visit to Politikens Forlag in Copenhagen, Angélique happened to hear about Erik Valeur’s debut novel, Det syvende barn (The Seventh Child). It appealed to her and she notified Marjolein Schurink, chief editor at Cargo/De Bezige Bij. They liked the writer’s imagination and drive, in addition to the book’s depth and social criticism. Her hunch was right, and it led to 17 prints and 100.000 copies being sold. Angélique, who studied Scandinavian languages at Groningen and later in Odense, began working with non-fiction in 1998, but soon contacted publishers about translating fiction, and was lucky to be assigned Nina Rasmussen’s Alene i Iran (Alone in Iran) (2001), which eventually led to nine reprints. Her interest in Scandinavian impressionism and the artist colony in Skagen, play an important role in her appreciation of Danish art and literature, and with the help of grants from the Danish Arts Foundation, she has spent time at Denmark’s Center for Writers and Translators, the beautiful Hald Hovedgaard, where she translated Jonas Bengtsson’s Et eventyr (A Fairy Tale) (2015). Always on the watch for new highlights, she now works as a scout as well, giving a heads-up about Danish writers to Dutch publishers.

THE DANISH ARTS FOUNDATION SUPPORT SCHEMES

LITERARY EVENTS AND MARKETING ABROAD

NORDIC TRANSLATION FUND: INTER-NORDIC TRANSLATIONS The fund is open to Nordic publishers wishing to publish a work translated from Danish to a Nordic language. Support for translations into Danish must be sought from within the country in which the respective work was originally published. The funds for Nordic translations are distributed on behalf of Nordic Culture Point’s Culture and Art Programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Internordic production grants can be applied for under the fund for Translation and Production.

There are three annual application deadlines.

LITERARY EXCHANGE FUND Support may be provided to defray travel expense in connection with a Danish author’s / illustrator’s participation in literary festivals, readings and publication events abroad, if there is a formal invitation to promote a publication. Support may be provided to foreign authors travelling to Denmark on the same basis. In addition travel

grants can also be awarded translators of Danish literature to a meeting with the Danish author.

Danish authors and illustrators can apply for travel costs in connection with residencies abroad and translators of Danish literature in connection with residencies in Denmark.

There is no application deadline, but trips must not have started at the time the application is made.

Applications will be processed as quickly as practicable within a month.

LITERARY EVENTS AND MARKETING ABROAD Subsidies for literary events and marketing of Danish literature abroad. Applications for subsidies are accepted from foreign publishers, diplomatic representations abroad, cultural institutions and others who wish to promote and increase knowledge about Danish literature outside Denmark.

THE DANISH PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION (founded in 1837) is a trade association for individuals and firms involved in the publishing industry.
