In 2023, Eva and Yuna began investigating the local web of healthcare and social organisations involved in this project. Initially, they looked for the common denominator between the different institutions. They did this through creative meetings with clay and building blocks, trying to map the care system with staff and care recipients. They discussed business structures of the organisations, as well as personal challenges and concerns. It soon became clear that that was where art could play a role: to bring a complicated matter back to the human scale, so that everyone can relate to it.
Eventually, six organisations joined in the further implementation of the project. Responding to the conversations held, Eva and Yuna developed an artistic concept. They then worked with the organisations’ participants to implement the artwork. The participants were asked to design their own chair as part of the artwork. The Waiting Room is a symbol of today’s healthcare system, often invisible to the outside world, but for those in the middle of it, difficult to get out.
Member social organisations consist of: Singelland BHS Gorredijk, art workshop Smoel, ‘t DAC and Skrep Wender, Crisis shelter Burgum, Niemand aan de Zijlijn and Patyna Witmarsum. The project was created in collaboration with Welcome to the Village.

De Lange Adem
Roman Tkachenko (RU, 1996) is beeldend kunstenaar en ruimtelijk ontwerper, geboren in Rostov aan de Don (RU). Zijn praktijk draait om het aanpakken van sociale en politieke onzekerheden en kwetsbaarheden van de gebouwde omgeving en de verschillende groepen die daarover onderhandelen. Zijn werk is multidisciplinair en altijd een reactie op de context. Het varieert van sociale praktijken, performances, installaties en video’s, en reflecteert door middel van artistieke gebaren op instellingen en actoren van de ruimte.
Hij richt zich op narratieve lagen binnen de gebouwde omgeving en de publieke sfeer en noemt zichzelf een architectonische dramaturg. In zijn werk kunnen deze verhalen worden ingezet om een nieuwe betekenisvolle relatie met onze omgeving tot stand te brengen, om op speelse wijze weerstand te bieden tegen het gebruik en ontwerp van de gebouwde omgeving, of om onze verbeelding te gebruiken voor alternatieven.
Zijn geprefereerde onderzoeksmethoden bestaan uit engagement op langere termijn binnen de context, countermapping en het organiseren van diners en wandelingen.
Roman is lid van het collectief Timeis.capital: een online platform voor audiovisueel onderzoek naar zelfgeorganiseerde initiatieven binnen de Nederlandse culturele sector. Het archiveert autonome kunst- en designruimtes in heel Nederland om de culturele geschiedenis van kwetsbare, vluchtige en collectieve projecten in beeld vast te leggen. Roman heeft een Bachelor of Art & Design in architectonische vormgeving van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam) en een Master of Arts in Interieurarchitectuur van het Sandberg Instituut (Amsterdam). Roman Tkachenko
Roman Tkachenko (RU, 1996) is a visual artist and spatial practitioner, born in Rostov on Don (RU). His practice revolves around addressing social and political precarities and vulnerabilities of the built environment and the different groups negotiating them. His work is multidisciplinary, always reactionary to the context. It varies from social practice, performance, installations and video, reflecting through artistic gestures on institutions and actors of space.
Focusing on narrative layers within the built environment and the public sphere, he calls himself an architectural dramaturg. In his work, these stories can be deployed to establish a new meaningful relationship with our environment, to engage in playful resistance against the use and design of the built environment, or to employ our imagination for alternatives. His preferred research methods consist of longer-term engagement within context, countermapping and organising dinners and walks.
Roman is a member of the collective Timeis.capital: an online platform for audiovisual research about self-organised initiatives within the Dutch cultural sector. During his residency period from February 6 to April 7, 2024, Roman explored the role artists can play within activist communities. By collaborating with activist organisations such as Extinction Rebellion (XR), he delved into the motivations behind various protests in the Leeuwarden region. His research led to new encounters with diverse activist groups, including queer activists, squatters, Pro-Palestine activists, anarchists and antiracism activists. He translated the substantive exchanges and motivations into an alternative map of the city of Leeuwarden.
This unique map reveals places of action, solidarity, risk, and resistance that are of great importance to these local activist communities but often remain unknown to the general public. Thus, the map provides not only an archive of personal stories but also a new way to preserve knowledge. This also led to the question, “How to create a moment of solidarity where all different activists’ voices can come together?”, which he investigates in his series of public interventions called De Lange Adem.
As a concluding event of his residency, Roman, in collaboration with climate activist Dirk Kuiken, organised a bike tour to visit these significant places. Through this residency, Roman revisited his ongoing interest in the artist’s position and the potential to work outside the traditional studio practice.

Tijdens zijn residentieperiode van 6 februari t/m 7 april 2024 onderzocht Roman welke rol kunstenaars kunnen spelen binnen activistische gemeenschappen. Door samen te werken met activistische organisaties zoals Extinction Rebellion (XR), verkende hij de drijfveren achter verschillende protesten in de regio Leeuwarden. Zijn onderzoek leidde tot nieuwe ontmoetingen met diverse activistische groepen, waaronder queer-activisten, krakers, Pro-Palestina activisten, anti-racisme activisten en anarchisten. De inhoudelijke uitwisselingen en beweegredenen heeft hij vertaald naar een alternatieve kaart van de stad Leeuwarden.
Deze unieke kaart onthult plekken van actie, solidariteit, risico en verzet die van groot belang zijn voor deze lokale activistische gemeenschappen, maar vaak onbekend blijven voor het grote publiek. Zo biedt de kaart niet alleen een archief van persoonlijke verhalen, maar ook een nieuwe manier om kennis te bewaren. Hieruit volgde ook de vraag: “Hoe creëer je een moment van solidariteit waarin de stemmen van alle verschillende activisten samen kunnen komen?”, die hij onderzoekt in zijn reeks van publieke interventies genaamd De Lange Adem.
Als afsluitend evenement van zijn residentie organiseerde Roman in samenwerking met klimaatactivist Dirk Kuiken een fietstocht om deze bijzondere plekken te bezoeken. Met deze residentie verkende Roman opnieuw zijn voortdurende interesse in de positie van de kunstenaar en het potentieel om buiten de traditionele atelierpraktijk te werken.
De multimediale installatie De Lange Adem bouwt voort op de historische functie van het luchtalarm. Elke eerste maandag van de maand klinkt de sirene als test door heel Nederland. Dit herkenbare geluid dient als collectief waarschuwingssignaal voor gevaarlijke situaties en calamiteiten, dat binnenkort wordt vervangen door een geïndividualiseerd systeem van telefoonmeldingen en sms’jes.
Op maandag 3 juni 2024 klinkt een nieuwe, collectieve interpretatie van deze sirene. Bewoners en activisten in Leeuwarden verspreiden zich door de stad en blazen om 12:00 uur stipt op misthoorns. Het resultaat is een grootschalige, sonische interventie in de publieke ruimte. Door op de hoorns te blazen, wordt een gezamenlijke stem gevormd waarmee het de stad waarschuwt voor de gevolgen van onder andere de klimaatcrisis, polarisatie, racisme en systematische onderdrukking. In samenwerking met lokale gemeenschappen wordt aandacht gevestigd op diverse onrechtvaardigheden, waardoor het een oproep is tot solidariteit en inclusie. Hiermee vormt het een collectief geluid voor een gezamenlijke toekomst.
De geluidsmanifestatie De Lange Adem vindt elke eerste maandag van de maand plaats om 12:00 uur. De volgende publieke actie is op maandag 1 juli en staat in het teken van Keti Koti, gericht op het herdenken en vieren van de afschaffing van de slavernij. De manifestaties zijn open voor iedereen die achter de gedeelde waarden van solidariteit en inclusie staat. Toekomstige manifestaties staan in het teken van een andere aanleidingen tot gezamenlijk protest, zoals de voortdurende genocide in Palestina, queerrechten, woonrechten, oorlogsgeweld en andere bedreigingen.

The multimedia installation De Lange Adem builds on the historical function of the air raid siren. Every first Monday of the month, the siren is tested throughout the Netherlands. This recognisable sound serves as a collective warning signal for dangerous situations and emergencies, soon to be replaced by an individualised system of phone alerts and text messages.
De Lange Adem proposes a new collective interpretation of this siren. On Monday June 3rd, De Lange Adem collective invited activists and other residents of Leeuwarden to take the initiative to replace the siren with their own bodies and voices, along with their breath, to blow misthorns precisely at 12:00 PM. The result is a large-scale, sonic intervention in public space. By spreading through the city and blowing the horns, a collective voice is formed, warning the city about the consequences of, among other things, the climate crisis, polarisation, racism and systemic oppression. In collaboration with local communities, attention is drawn to various injustices, making it a call for solidarity and inclusion. It thus forms a collective sound for a shared future.
The sound manifestation De Lange Adem takes place every first Monday of the month at 12:00 PM. The next public action is on Monday July 1, and focuses on Keti Koti, dedicated to commemorating and celebrating the abolition of slavery. The manifestations are open to anyone who supports the shared values of solidarity and inclusion. Future manifestations will address other reasons for collective protest, such as the ongoing genocide in Palestine, queer rights, housing rights and other threats.

Frankenstein in Friesland
Contemporary Glory bestaat uit Charlien Adriaenssens (BE, 1988) en Louis van der Waal (NL/FR, 1979). Charlien Adriaenssens studeerde af aan de Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam) in de richting Beeld en Taal en heeft een multidisciplinaire beeldende kunstpraktijk, waarin het geschreven en gesproken woord een grote rol speelt. Ook is ze artistiek directeur van de experimentele kunstinstelling WORM (Rotterdam). Louis van der Waal werkt als acteur en theatermaker in het ensemble van Het Zuidelijk Toneel, speelt in verschillende series en films, en maakt in samenwerking met kunstenaars en muzikanten voorstellingen tussen performance en beeldende kunst.
Typisch voor Contemporary Glory is de manier waarop theater, performance en beeldende kunst vanzelfsprekend samensmelten tot een nieuwe, medium-overstijgende kunstvorm met een geheel eigen logica en beeldtaal. Contemporary Glory is gespecialiseerd in het maken van interactieve performances en improvisatietheater in de publieke ruimte. Ze stellen op een onbevangen manier vragen over actuele, lokale en alledaagse onderwerpen. Ze willen een spons zijn, zeggen ze zelf, voor wat er speelt op een bepaalde plek en wat de inwoners bezighoudt.
Met hun absurde, aanstekelijke en toch ook sensitieve vorm van improvisatietheater ontdekken ze samen met hun publiek verhalen en ideeën over de identiteit van een gemeenschap, de genius loci van een plek en sociale - soms vreemdegebruiken binnen een lokale samenleving. In het plezier ontstaat vaak iets nieuws, in zelfbegrip en sociale verhoudingen.
Contemporary Glory
Contemporary Glory consists of Charlien Adriaenssens (BE, 1988) and Louis van der Waal (NL/FR, 1979). Charlien Adriaenssens graduated from the Rietveld Academy in Image and Language (Amsterdam) and has a multidisciplinary visual arts practice, in which the written and spoken word play a significant role. She is also the artistic director of the experimental art institution WORM (Rotterdam). Louis van der Waal works as an actor and theatre maker in the ensemble of Het Zuidelijk Toneel, performs in various series and films, and creates performances at the intersection of performance and visual art in collaboration with artists and musicians.
What characterises Contemporary Glory is the way theatre, performance and visual art seamlessly merge into a new, medium-transcending art form with its own unique logic and visual language. Contemporary Glory specialises in creating interactive performances and improvisational theatre in public spaces. They pose questions in an open-minded manner about current, local and everyday topics. They describe themselves as a sponge, absorbing what is happening in a specific place and what occupies the minds of its residents.
With their absurd, infectious yet sensitive form of improvisational theatre, they explore, together with their audience, stories and ideas about the identity of a community. The genius loci of a place, and social—sometimes peculiar— practices within a local society. In the enjoyment, something new often emerges, in self-understanding and social relationships.

In 2023 Contemporary Glory hit the road with our Travelling Artist Studio: formerly an old SRV truck, now a transformed fire truck. Along the way, they made an unique art film, inspired by the local environment and encounters with locals. In the months of July and October, Contemporary Glory travelled through Friesland. Dressed in striking costumes and masks, they tried to make the invisible visible. Mysterious scenes reflect the many different appearances of The Frisian, the Mienskip and the state of present-day Friesland.
Apart from Louis and Charlien, the fire truck also housed a toddler and a baby. As a travelling art family, they went on tour with the fire truck, each time making costumes, masks and sets on location together with local residents and then playing a scene with them together. Starting from a family from the Randstad that leaves for the North to find a better future, anyone they met on their tour could step in and out of the film with them.
In a wide lap around the province, they became increasingly entangled in a net of strange events and dire situations: Heart of Darkness in the countryside. As they travelled, they gathered impressions, conversations, encounters, collaborations, characters and fragments of stories that formed into a frame narrative of various images. Interwoven with elements from the classic story of Frankenstein, this art film forms a stitched-together joyful activist manifesto that aims to convey the experience of Friesland through fiction.

In 2023 ging Contemporary Glory op pad met ons Reizende Atelier: voorheen een oude SRV-wagen, nu een omgetoverde brandweerauto. Onderweg maakten zij een unieke kunstfilm, geïnspireerd door de lokale omgeving en ontmoetingen met inwoners. In de maanden juli en oktober reisde Contemporary Glory door Friesland. Gehuld in opvallende kostuums en maskers trachten zij het onzichtbare zichtbaar te maken. Mysterieuze scènes reflecteren de vele verschillende verschijningsvormen van De Fries, de Mienskip en de toestand van het huidige Friesland.
Behalve Louis en Charlien herbergde de brandweerwagen ook een peuter en een baby. Als reizende kunstfamilie gingen ze met de brandweerwagen op tournee en maakten ze telkens op locatie samen met de plaatselijke bewoners kostuums, maskers en decors om vervolgens met hen samen een scène te spelen. Met als uitgangspunt een gezin uit de Randstad dat vertrekt naar het Noorden om een betere toekomst te vinden, kon eenieder die ze op hun tocht ontmoetten mee in en uit de film stappen.
In een grote boog rond de provincie, raakten zij steeds meer verstrikt in een net van vreemde gebeurtenissen en penibele situaties: Heart of Darkness op het platteland. Op reis verzamelden zij indrukken, gesprekken, ontmoetingen, samenwerkingen, personages en fragmenten van verhalen die zich vormden tot een raamvertelling van verschillende beelden. Verweven met elementen uit het klassieke verhaal van Frankenstein, vormt deze kunstfilm een aan elkaar genaaid vrolijk activistisch manifest, dat de beleving van Friesland wil overbrengen via fictie.
De geschiedenis van Friesland is een geschiedenis vol verhalen: over verzet en geweld tegen de kolonialisten en overheersers, over vrijheid, en over zelfbestuur van een eigengereid volk. Een cultuur en een landschap zijn altijd aan verandering onderhevig. Dit gegeven kan soms gespannen voet staan met een lokale gemeenschap met eigen traditionele ideeën. Vanuit het idee van een vaste identiteit, wordt vaak teruggegrepen op deze, vaak verzonnen, verhalen en bedachte gebruiken en tradities: “zo hebben we het altijd al gedaan”.
Voor Contemporary Glory kennen deze verhalen een grote waarde, maar stellen zij ook alternatieven voor. Ze poneren nieuwe verhalen die de Fries klaar kunnen maken voor een ongewisse toekomst in een tijd waarin veel verandert: klimaatverandering, landbouwtransitie, verstedelijking en sociale ontbinding.
In dit nieuwe verhaal vormt het verhaal van de familie Frankenstein het startpunt. Na het scheppen van twee unieke wezens, begint een kunstzinnig koppel Contemporary Glory met twijfels en een knagend schuldgevoel over de realiteit waarmee hun nakomelingen zullen worden geconfronteerd. De dreiging van naderende klimaatrampen werpt een sombere schaduw over de toekomst. Vastbesloten om een beter leven te vinden voor hun twee “kinderen,” besluiten ze een reis te maken naar Friesland: een plaats waar geluk heerst en het land zich dapper verzet tegen de oprukkende zee.
De Friezen onderhouden een raadselachtige band met de oceaan. Ooit was Friesland een uitgestrekte kwelder die bij vloed vaak onder water liep, waarbij de Friezen zich terugtrokken naar hun terpen. In hun zoektocht naar een nieuw begin raken ze betrokken bij een avontuur met een gestrande walvis, dansende aardappels en een blauw golvende fanfare. Hoe zal de reis van het Frankenstein-gezin zich ontvouwen? Zullen ze worden omarmd door de gemeenschap van deze noordelijke provincie en eindelijk hun langverwachte betere toekomst vinden?

The history of Friesland is a history full of stories: tales of resistance and violence against colonizers and oppressors, of freedom, and of self-governance by an independent people. Culture and landscape are always subject to change. This fact can sometimes conflict with a local community that holds its own traditional ideas. Often, out of a sense of fixed identity, there is a tendency to fall back on these, often invented, stories and fabricated customs and traditions: “this is how we’ve always done it.”
For Contemporary Glory, these stories hold great value but also propose alternatives. They present new narratives that can prepare the Frisians for an uncertain future in a time of significant change: climate change, agricultural transition, urbanization, and social disintegration.
In this new narrative, the story of the Frankenstein family serves as the starting point. After creating two unique beings, an artistic couple, Contemporary Glory, begins to grapple with doubts and a gnawing guilt about the reality their offspring will face. The threat of impending climate disasters casts a bleak shadow over the future. Determined to find a better life for their two “children,” they decide to journey to Friesland: a place where happiness prevails and the land bravely resists the encroaching sea.
The Frisians maintain a mysterious bond with the ocean. Once, Friesland was an expansive salt marsh that often flooded at high tide, with the Frisians retreating to their terps. In their quest for a new beginning, they become entangled in an adventure with a stranded whale, dancing potatoes, and a blue undulating brass band. How will the Frankenstein family’s journey unfold? Will they be embraced by the community of this northern province and finally find their long-awaited better future?

Support Structure
Kunstenaarsduo SMET bestaat uit de kunstenaars Matt Plezier (NL, 1967) en Setareh Noorani (NL, 1995). Twee kunstenaars uit andere generaties en met een verschillende achtergrond, maar met een sterk gedeelde fascinatie voor lokale geschiedenissen, vergeten verhalen, stedelijke ontwikkeling en gemeenschapsvorming in een stad.
Matt is een autodidact kunstenaar en maakt veelal publicaties en installaties met fotografie, gevonden beeldmateriaal, tekst en drukwerk op verschillende materialen. Setareh is architect, onderzoeker en curator bij het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam) en onafhankelijk kunstenaar. Setareh’s ruimtelijke en architectonische ontwerpen benadrukken haar voortdurende onderzoek naar (institutionele) ruimten voor collectieve toe-eigening, waarbij onderbelichte stemmen centraal staan.
Matt en Setareh vinden elkaar in de wereld van de tegencultuur, de kraakbewegingen en de hardcore punkmuziek: dit zijn plekken waar gemeenschappen, die tegen de dominante cultuur ingaan, ruimte maken voor eigenzinnige kunst en muziek. Deze counterculture- en D.I.Y- mentaliteit is in veel aspecten van hun werk terug te vinden.
Als kunstenaarsduo SMET duiken zij in hun praktijk vaak in de geschiedenis van naoorlogse wijken, plekken van sociale volkshuisvesting, die de laatste decennia sterk veranderen door gentrificatie, marktwerking en veryupping. Deze plekken zijn voor hen exemplarische voorbeelden van het verlies van collectiviteit en solidariteit in de samenleving.
In hun praktijk nestelen ze zich in deze wijken en zetten ze hun kunstpraktijk in om samen met de lokale bevolking eigenaarschap over de leefomgeving terug te winnen, en het gevoel van het bestaan van mogelijkheden voor een alternatieve toekomst te vergroten. Alternatieven op het neoliberale burgerschap, de markt en de overheid die steeds meer ruimte geeft voor de markt.
Artist duo SMET consists of artists Matt Plezier (NL, 1967) and Setareh Noorani (NL, 1995). Two artists from different generations and backgrounds, but with a strongly shared fascination for local histories, forgotten stories, urban deve-lopment and community building in the city.
Matt is a self-taught artist and mostly creates publications and installations using photography, found footage, text and printmaking on various materials. Setareh is an architect, researcher and curator at the New Institute (Rotterdam) and an independent artist. Setareh’s spatial and architectural designs highlight her ongoing research into (institutional) spaces for collective appropriation, focusing on underexposed voices.
Matt and Setareh find each other in the world of counterculture, squatter movements and hardcore punk music. These are the places where communities, going against the dominant culture, make space for experimental art and music. This counterculture and D.I.Y mentality is reflected in many aspects of their work.
In their practice as an artist duo SMET often delves into the histories of postwar neighbourhoods, places of social public housing, which in recent decades have been greatly changed by gentrification, market forces and yuppifying. For them, these places are exemplary examples of the loss of collectivity and solidarity in society.
In their practice, they nestle in these neighbourhoods and deploy their art practice to reclaim ownership of the living environment together with local people, and increase the sense of the existence of possibilities for alternative futures. Alternatives to neoliberal citizenship, the market and the government giving more and more space to the market.

In October and November 2023, SMET opened an art space for the neighbourhood in Leeuwarden’s Heechterp district with the art project “Nimmenslân / No Man’s Land”. The Heechterp neighbourhood is facing major changes. Due to the state of the flats and the socio-economic perspective of the neighbourhood residents, the flats are being demolished and replaced with new flats.
A big improvement, but also a drastic change that raises concerns among the current residents. After all, there will soon be no room for everyone. What is now 100% a social housing estate will change to a neighbourhood with a ‘healthy’ mix, as it is called in policy terms. Many current residents will be referred to other housing: away from their current environment and community.
SMET transformed a flat that had been declared uninhabitable into a temporary “no man’s land”, a place that falls between the neighbourhood’s history and its future. It showed the gap between the old and the uncertain outlook of the neighbourhood residents, but also showed the power and potential of an in-between space. That which falls in between and refuses to conform to common narratives about the history of the neighbourhood and the future of Heechterp through the eyes of property developers.
In the flat, people worked, speculated and dreamed about the future of Heechterp together with neighbourhood residents, school classes, MBO students, historians, welfare workers and artists.

In oktober en november 2023 opende SMET met het kunstproject “Nimmenslân / No Man’s Land” in de Leeuwarder wijk Heechterp een kunstruimte voor de buurt. De wijk Heechterp staat voor grote veranderingen. Vanwege de staat van de flats en het sociaaleconomische perspectief van de wijkbewoners, worden de flats gesloopt en vervangen met nieuwe appartementen.
Een grote verbetering, maar ook een ingrijpende verandering die zorgen oproept bij de huidige bewoners. Er is namelijk straks geen plek voor iedereen. Wat nu voor 100% een sociale huurwijk is, veranderd naar een wijk met een ‘gezonde’ mix, zoals dat heet in beleidstermen. Veel huidige bewoners worden verwezen naar een andere woning: weg van hun huidige omgeving en gemeenschap.
SMET toverde een flat die onbewoonbaar was verklaard, om tot een tijdelijk “niemandsland”, een plek dat tussen de geschiedenis en de toekomst van de wijk invalt. Het toonde de kloof tussen het oude en het onzekere vooruitzicht van de wijkbewoners, maar liet ook de kracht en mogelijkheden zien van een tussenruimte. Datgene dat tussenbeide valt en weigert te conformeren met gangbare narratieven over de geschiedenis van de wijk en de toekomst van Heechterp door de ogen van projectontwikkelaars.
In de flat werd gewerkt, gespeculeerd en gedroomd over de toekomst van Heechterp, samen met wijkbewoners, schoolklassen, MBO-studenten, historici, welzijnsmedewerkers en kunstenaars.
Support Structure combineert grafische kunst en architectonische elementen tot een sociaal bouwwerk. SMET is geïnteresseerd in hoe architectonische ingrepen in bestaande gebouwen en interventies in ruimtelijk ontwerp de private en openbare ruimte toegankelijk kunnen maken voor een groep of een gemeenschap die eerder geen toegang had tot deze plekken.
Het ontwerp van gebouwen en de inrichting van de openbare ruimte getuigen van een waardesysteem en is altijd ideologisch geladen. Een gebouw kan dienen om het individuele comfort te vergroten. Een ruimtelijke indeling kan dienen het economische verkeer te versnellen. In de praktijk van SMET stellen zij de vraag: hoe kan een gebouw of een ruimtelijke ingreep een ander waardesysteem voorstellen, een waardesysteem dat uitgaat van solidariteit en gemeenschappelijkheid?
Support Structure brengt het kunstproject in Heechterp opnieuw tot leven. Niet in letterlijke zin, maar eerder als toonbeeld van hun praktijk. Een architectonische ingreep van Setareh Noorani in de ruimte die dienend is voor de tentoonstellingsbezoekers en de Leeuwarder gemeenschap.
Deze structuur is de drager van het kunstwerk van Lu Lin, het grafische drukwerk van Matt Plezier en de werken op doek van SMET samen, die met gevonden materiaal ongehoorde verhalen en perspectieven over Leeuwarden en de wijk Heechterp herschikken tot een nieuw historische beeldbank, artistieke interpretatie en gemeenschappelijk archief. Een co-creatie die open is voor vrij gebruik.
Support Structure bouwt voort op het project Nimmenslân / No Man’s Land. Dit kwam tot stand in samenwerking met medewerkers van Elkien, Amaryllis, de vrijwilligers van bewonersbedrijf Heechterp en het Wijkcentrum HeechterpSchieringen. Daarnaast werd samengewerkt met MBO Aeres & Basisschool ICK de Plantaan. Het project kende artistieke bijdragen van kunstenaars Johan in ‘t Hout, Phillipa Driest, architect Jelmer Teunissen en historicus Siep van Linge.
Support Structure combines graphic art and architectural elements to create a social structure. SMET is interested in how architectural interventions in existing buildings and interventions in spatial design can make private and public space accessible to a group or community that previously had no access to these places.
The design of buildings and the layout of public spaces testify to a value system and is always ideologically charged. A building may serve to enhance individual comfort. A spatial layout can serve to speed up economic circulation. In SMET’s practice, they pose the question: how can a building or spatial intervention represent another value system, a value system based on solidarity and commonality?
Support Structure brings the art project in Heechterp back to life. Not in a literal sense, but rather as a model of their practice. An architectural intervention by Setareh Noorani in the space that serves the exhibition visitors and the Leeuwarder community.
This structure is the support for Lu Lin’s artwork, Matt Plezier’s graphic work and SMET’s works on canvas together, which use found material to rearrange unheard stories and perspectives about Leeuwarden and the Heechterp district, into a new historical image bank, artistic interpretation and communal archive. A co-creation that is open for free use.
Support Structure continues the work of Nimmenslân / No Man’s land. This was created in collaboration with employees of Elkien, Amaryllis, the volunteers of the Bewonersbedrijf Heechterp, and Wijkcentrum Heechterp-Schieringen. Club VHDG x Gemeentegoed
Club VHDG is onze manier om meer kansen te creëren voor jonge kunstenaars en opkomende kunstprofessionals in Noord-Nederland. Het is een gemotiveerde en actieve groep van jonge curatoren, kunstenaars, (creatieve) producenten, stagiaires en vrijwilligers uit heel Noord-Nederland. Samen met hen organiseren we uitdagende activiteiten en workshops. Daarnaast speelt hun stem een adviserende rol in het ontwikkelen van een divers en actueel programma bij VHDG.
Club VHDG komt regelmatig samen. Deze bijeenkomsten dienen als netwerkmogelijkheden en als momenten waarop workshops en activiteiten worden georganiseerd, gebaseerd op de interesses van de leden.
Afgelopen jaar organiseerden zij hun eerste expositie in Kunstruimte H47 onder de titel “Modern Traditions”. Nu, tijdens Gemeentegoed, organiseren zij een bruisende reeks workshops voor startende kunstenaars, kunststudenten en iedereen die zich wil ontwikkelen in bijvoorbeeld het werken met keramiek, houtskool of live drawing. De workshops zijn gratis te bezoeken en toegankelijk voor iedereen.

Club VHDG x Gemeentegoed
Club VHDG is our way of creating more opportunities for young artists and upcoming art professionals in the Northern Netherlands. It is a motivated and active group of young curators, artists, (creative) producers, interns and volunteers from all over the Northern Netherlands. Together with them, we organise inspiring activities and workshops. In addition, their voices play an advisory role in developing a diverse and relevant programme at VHDG.
Club VHDG meets regularly. These meetings serve as networking opportunities and as moments when workshops and activities are hosted, based on members’ interests.
Last year, they organised their first exhibition at Kunstruimte H47 under the title of “Modern Traditions”. Now, during Gemeentegoed, they are organising a vibrant series of workshops for beginning artists, art students and anyone who wants to develop their skills in, for example, working with ceramics, charcoal or live drawing. The workshops are free to attend and open to all.

Voor kinderen en families
Met Gemeentegoed vieren we de menselijke creativiteit, zowel in de tentoonstellingsruimte als in Leeuwarden. Alle kunstprojecten zijn gemaakt door veel verschillende handen en kunstzinnige geesten, zoals schoolkinderen van Leeuwarder basisscholen, kinderen uit het AZC in Sint Annaparochie, studenten van MBO Aeres en amateurtheater acteurs uit de Friese dorpen. Al hun creaties zijn te bewonderen in de Gemeentegoed tentoonstelling, als onderdeel van de kunstwerken zelf, of in de aparte educatie presentatie.
Als je door de tentoonstelling loopt, krijg je vanzelf ook zin om zelf iets te maken. Het educatieteam, onder leiding van Siska Alkema, organiseert een feestelijk programma om je eigen kunstwerken te maken. Dit doen wij op vrijdag 5 juli in Heechterp van 12:30 tot 17:00 met het Makers Oogstfeest: een feestelijke creatieve middag over duurzaamheid, circulariteit en biodiversiteit. In de tentoonstellingsruimte organiseren we elke woensdagmiddag en zaterdagmiddag tussen 14:00 en 17:00 leuke activiteiten voor kinderen en families. Kom langs en doe mee! (aanmelden niet nodig)

For children and families
With Gemeentegoed, we celebrate human creativity, both in the exhibition space and in Leeuwarden. All art projects are created by many different hands and artistic minds, such as schoolchildren from Leeuwarden primary schools, children from the AZC in Sint Annaparochie, students from MBO Aeres, and amateur theatre actors from the Frisian villages. All their creations can be admired in Gemeentegoed exhibition, as part of the art works or in the special education presentation.
As you walk through the exhibition, you will also feel inspired to create something yourself. The education team, led by Siska Alkema, organises a festive program to make your own artworks. We do this on Friday, July 5th in Heechterp from 12:30 to 17:00 with the Makers Oogstfeest: a festive creative afternoon about sustainability, circularity, and biodiversity.
In the exhibition space, we organise fun activities for children and families every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from 14:00 to 17:00. You’re free to walk in and join! (no reservation needed)

Publiek Programma
Als integraal onderdeel van de tentoonstelling organiseren we een uitgebreid publieksprogramma, met lezingen, workshops, muziekavonden, acties, tours en festiviteiten. Dit programma is zowel een verlengstuk van de tentoonstelling als wel een inbedding van de kunstwerken in de lokale context. Het programma komt tot stand in samenwerking met de kunstenaars van Gemeentegoed en lokale kunstenaars, initiatieven en organisaties. VHDG is een eigenzinnig kunstinitiatief met aandacht voor experiment, hedendaagse kunst en talentontwikkeling. In onze kunstmanifestaties werpen kunstenaars een nieuwe blik op actuele thema’s. Met exposities en kunstprogramma’s over onderwerpen als het verleden en de toekomst van de wijken in Leeuwarden, de vergeten tradities van de landbouw in onze provincie en de toekomst van voedselproductie, of over de positie en ervaringen van nieuwkomers in de Friese provincie. Dit doen we door kunstenaars te laten kijken naar de lokale omgeving en haar geschiedenis. Wat vertellen lokale verhalen ons over de wereld waarin we nu leven? Bij VHDG zijn we nieuwsgierig, activistisch en innovatief.
