Moped Magazine is created for you by moped enthusiasts whose passion is to capture the core essence of the worldwide moped community. Which is demonstrated through our creative approach to celebrating the various diverse aspects of the Moped way of life and more.

In upcoming issues look for more commentary and stories by various people from the world of mopeds and beyond. Perhaps even from someone you personally know.

We at Moped Magazine celebrate diversity and are active in our ongoing eort to be as inclusive as possible in our publication.

In This Issue: FLORIDA 1. Florida is known for its great weather year-round, beautiful beaches and diverse communities. How do you think Florida ranks with other states as a destination for mopeds?

Florida should rank as one of the top destinations for anyone looking to ride almost any time throughout the year! We have the best weather year-round, it is never is “too cold” to ride a scooter or a beautiful vintage ped. There are beautiful unknown landmarks all over Florida. If you haven't camped in Florida or seen the underwater caves, this is highly recommended. There are so many sleepy little beach towns to ride in also!

2. How do you feel about the vintage moped scene, specifically over the years in just the state of Florida and in your region, what kinds of trends or changes have you seen?

We, as business owners and moped club members, feel that that the vintage moped community has grown tremendously over that past few years; especially with the online presence of moped clubs being more active on social media as a whole. As far as our state, we have had several groups come and go. There was a great club in Inverness a

few years ago and many of us remember how fun the rallies were. Our club in particular, The Dirty Petcocks has held together as strong as the day the club was started with members also coming and going.

During our journey into the Sunshine State we met up with Monica & Walt of Sarasota Mopeds and Colin Fortier, Founder of The Dirty Petcocks.

The Dirty Petcocks are a Rad club who put the Mo' in Moped. As in Mo' Faster!

We have an amazing core group that always are together, building, teaching and learning from each other. We may be the only remaining vintage moped club left in the entire state of Florida. There are new outlets popping up via the internet such as the Florida Moped Riders on Facebook, along with several other social media outlets that are geared towards the evolution of the scene and will help newbies to get into the vintage moped scene with learning and customising their own peds. I have to give a shoutout to the “Ladies of Moped Army” which Monica is a member of. This club is in no relation to the website, Moped Army. This club was formed for just women who ride and wrench on vintage mopeds. It is a “safe space” for women riders new and old to discuss and learn from the more experienced moped mechanically savvy women. Up until a few years ago it was difficult for a woman to even join a conversation about the mechanics of a moped without being shut down or criticised. There are so many women that belong to moped clubs now and have even started their own clubs. I have to say that most men and women in the moped community are very helpful and want to help each other.

3. I know that the Tampa Bay 2 Stroke scooter club has been fairly influential in the region. Do you think that they have also led to an increased interest in vintage mopeds?

The Tampa Bay 2 Stroke scooter club hold regular rides although our club have never been to any of their rides. They seem like a big healthy group

and have been told they are welcoming to having vintage mopeds ride which is great! I can’t speak to their influence on the vintage moped scene but hope they have a positive effect on it. The club however focuses on the spirit of riding vintage motor scootersmostly Lambretta's and Vespa's.

98% of customers purchasing an economical vehicle such as a scooter or moped, in the end want something that is reliable to be used as a daily rider. These mopeds being rebuilt still have the old technology which doesn’t and won’t work for most people. Also, due to the EPA restrictions and cost of building a modern/ vintage moped, getting it past the EPA Certification vs the cost of a four-stroke scooter, the odds are against the resurrection of these cool old bikes. We’ve seen this with Tomos, being the most recently resurrected brand. The cost was just too high for dealers to make a profit on them when you’re only selling a few per year if you’re lucky.

6. Do you find many women taking an interest in vintage mopeds? If so, in what ways do mopeds appeal to women versus a motorcycle or scooter?

Yes, Ladies of Moped Army currently has 335 members on Facebook and growing!

When you compare that to the largest Moped community website MA, there are only currently 522 members, those are great numbers. I think mopeds are appealing to most women due to the ease of mechanics, size, weight and the customisation options available. The cost of purchasing a ratty old moped and building it to your liking is much cheaper than a motorcycle or scooter. Plus, learning to work on a vintage moped vs a motorcycle seems to be a bit of an easier learning curve for most. With the growing clubs and groups available, women are designing, building and riding their own custom builds. Every single one is different and as unique as the women building them!

7. What was your first moped?

My first moped was “Cotton Candy” a custom 2001 Tomos built by Walt and his first moped was a 1969 Puch Maxi acquired from Vietnam. Together we now own over 75 vintage mopeds in our collection of which some are in pristine, museum quality condition and others not so much.

8. When did the Dirty Petcocks begin and how many members did you have when you started? What is the current number of members and how do you see the Dirty Petcocks growing over the next couple of years?

The dirty petcocks started in late 2009. Colin Fortier along with a few friends started the group. They each owned a moped and shared the same love for mopeds so decided forming a club was the way to go. As new members joined the club, and rallies around the country started becoming more prevalent, the scene grew and DPC along with it. Each member has a job within the group to keep it going. As other members joined, the group grew and got up to about 15 to 20 strong . Some moved away & joined other groups but remain in contact and still ride with us when they visit Sarasota. Currently we have 12 regular riders, some pledges and support riders. We try to maintain an online presence via social media thanks to all members that post each time we ride. We meet every week for Taco Tuesday and ride. As for what the future holds, we will always welcome new members or even visitors but our foundation is solid and we look forward to always riding together as a family!

9. Do you have any special words of wisdom and or additional information about the Florida moped scene to share with readers of this article?

Words of wisdom are: Let it be….just kidding.

Learn as much as you can about your specific type of moped. Don’t be afraid to join online groups and ask questions. Some will be helpful, and others may not be but DO NOT let one bad seed discourage you.

It was a joy when our friend, Artist, Actress, Amy Oneil dropped in to our studio from Los Angeles. Amy is best known for her contribution to the popular Disney Blockbuster film Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Star Trek the Next Generation and other film and television projects.

Following a period of residence in France where she studied the elegant art of Mime. Amy became fascinated with vintage Mopeds.

Though she currently does not own one. Her love for the mechanical function, look and simplicity of mopeds is quite profound.

She has a special love for the classic French made Peugeot 103.

Amy plans to obtain a Mobylette or a Peugeot one day. With the intent to learn it inside and out, making it her daily rider. Her enthusiasm is genuine as she takes her first steps into the world of Mopeds. Let's prepare to welcome Amy to the community!

The P6 "PSR" Exhaust was easy to install and looks great on just about any and every build. The ďŹ nish is top notched too. The Dutch are Masters of their craft and it shows!

Made exclusively by those amazing Dutch folk at Homoet. We got this thing in from a shop and what a massively well built piece of art. The Dutch masters would be proud and so were we. We mounted the P6 "PSR" to a Puch Maxi. Its a good pipe with excellent pull from high mid to high revs. When the powerband kicks in, Lordy it can be a bit scary. It's certainly made for the race track. Designed for high revving builds. SUPER CLUTCH: Oh My we don't know where to begin with this thing. Well, we pulled this part from our bin and decided to give it a go. I think this part was originally sold long ago. The thing looks cross between a Blake's 7 spaceship and a 1980's EPCOT Center concept pavilion! Very minimal in design and sadly in function too. We bolted this thing to an E50 and set off for a ride. The clutch refused to engage despite us fiddling with the

bolts. In theory you can adjust the clutch via tightening or loosening the clutch's three spring loaded bolts. We didn't have any issues with the bolts backing out. We did encounter insane clutch slippage. We could actually hear it spinning about, much like a cheap 45 on a Fisher Price record player. Oh the humanity!

TUNE® SIDE KICKSTAND: From our friends at Treats arrives one of the best Sidestands to ever mount a 'Ped. When we un-boxed the Tune® kickstand we were will impressed by the build quality. Having bent a number of side-stands in my time I can affirm that this particular build is of very high quality. But one is not surprised since it came from Treats. Those guys out in California have been supplying the moped community with some of the best parts for quite some time.

Such a Rad design! The Kickstand can be mounted on either the left or right side.

We mounted the stand up to a Murray custom that featured a MLM swing-arm.

Though the stand mounts very easily, because of the gap space, you may need to insert a spacer of sorts.

Though this depends on the type of swing-arm you are using the side-stand on. The space will vary in stack height. The Tune® side-stand

Looks a lot like a cross between a Blake's 7 Spaceship and an 80's Epcot Center concept Pavillion! has been designed to adapt to a number of swings arms, that is, with a little bit of work.

Though you should not expect the process to be too extensive, we got ours to fit in about 10 minutes. On our Murray we bought a thin piece of steel from the hardware store and cut it. Then using JB weld we stacked the cut pieces to fill the gap space. All in all after torquing the bolt the stand has remained in place and worked super well.

She's got the kind of power and look that sends a strong message of Hey, I just got beat by a Moped!

1. Jordan how long have you been into Mopeds?

Since the Summer of 09 2. When did you build the Pinto?

I got it Thanksgiving of '11 or '10 gotta check 3. What was the bike’s state when you first bought it?

How did you get the Pinto?

Well I found it on Craigslist for $125 running in stock roughish shape. I'm was in Charleston SC at the time so I got my friend who lived near the bike to grab it and gave him $150 for getting it for me. Him and his little brothers rode it around their farm till they crashed and they couldn't get it running again. But when I showed up I figured out it was the Home Depot rigged kill switch was turned off and started it right up again.

4. Why did you choose the Gila kit? Why Reed over Piston Port?

The Pinto was my first complete rebuild, Which got me into a Moped club after being "the last prospect" the first year I lived in Atlanta.

When I did that I added a used 70cc dmp kit that I got from my friend Timo. (that actual kit has been owned by 3 club members so far and has an insane amount of miles on it). So after going through piston rings and pistons from it being so worn out after years and years I decided to rebuild it and go bigger. Everyone was INTERVIEW BY PLEASANT PHOTOGRAPHY BY PLEASANT 14

blowing up polini kits at the time. So I decided to go with the bigger and more durable gila. It was also a chance to learn more with reeds on a puch. I wanted to go faster.

5. Have you put the Pinto on a dyno before? What do you think is the current horse power of the Pinto?

Never had it on a Dyno but I hit 70 on it in Atlanta, so that's when I went to the next step of the "gilarini". (gila ported with polini style porting) As far as horse power I'm not sure I'd have to look up stock specs of a gila to get a rough estimate after the port mods. I wanna say maybe 6 but I could be totally wrong.

6. How many mopeds have you built before?

Number of mopeds I've built?

No clue. I've helped build more of other people's peds than my own. I wrenched with my first ATL friend a lot when I first moved to ATL. He took me to my first moped club regular ride when I moved there and he lived down the street from me. Rad dude. I started out in Savannah with two friends, Tim (Ostrom) and Pat (Norris), they got me into mopeds when I worked my first Savannah job at a local Pizza parlour. My first moped was a fantic Concord minarelli, then a tomos lx top tank, then the pinto, then more and more 7. I see that you have a side bleed estoril exhaust. How do you like it?

I actually have a simonini pipe on the pinto. Estorils are good pipes but I hate the look of most snorkle/side bleed

CONT. reverse back pipes. The simonini is a great hi rev pipe though. Works great so far on all the gila variations I've had on the pinto. Oh and Treats supper stuffy all crank!

8. What is your current setup? carb, tires, bars, cdi, etc… current set up is heavily ported gila and piston, simonini pipe, Fred special 24mm "oko" carb.

Hpi mini rotor cdi ignition, trail tech voltage regulator (hard wired with brake lights). The cheap clip on bars from treats, ebr "hydraulic" disc brake maxi length forks. Mike Thomas disc brake on the front. Trail tech vapor or striker computer (which ever one has the tachometer on it). Puch long racer seat. Puch five stars with Sava mc11s (2.75" on the back 2.5" on the front) mom maxi swing arm. Treat metric clutch with red (minarelli, I think) springs (that I just blew up so I have to get something stronger) lightened clutch Bell and started plate.

9. Are there any words of wisdom you would like to share with the youngsters out there, the ladies and guys who are new to moped tuning.

Words of wisdom... Get ready to build, rebuild and rebuild. It's just part of the deal. Get creative, learn some pro tips, get acquainted with specialty tools and what types of regular tools you should have on you when you ride. There are always dumb questions but you won't learn if you don't ask them (a key skill is learning when to ask them).

When you get help pay attention and also offer to do the work while being taught and definitely do the work the second time if the helper did it the first time.

Learn your limits and learn how to push them. Do the research.

When online or when you have access, search for your answer before you ask the question.

The community is vast and for the most part pretty inviting.

Make friends and you can go have fun in almost every city in 16

the US. Probably even end up places you e never been to of thought of going.

Have a thick skin and a wide sense of humor will go very far.

You're gonna get dirty, wet, and hurt. If not a question of if you will crash, but when. Pay close attention to what's going on around you on the road. Rallies are the biggest, funnest shit show. Try not to be too stupid and you'll have a blast. It's all about having fun, emerging yourself in a community, learning and pushing yourself.

Be open to the insanely vast knowledge the community has to offer but beware of the trolls and don't be too cocky.

ERICA Jarman 1. Erica what was your first moped?

My first moped was an 1987 Honda Express in black with purple script.

My father bought it for me when I was nine years old for Christmas. It was by far the most exciting Christmas as a child.

2. We see that you now have a 1980 Honda Express, why did you choose this model bike?

This exact moped, color and year was the same moped as my Grandfathers. When I was 6 years old, I would play on his Honda Express moped when I was a small child, pretending to go places, dreaming of the freedom.

3. What are your feelings about women getting into vintage mopeds?

personal style. The joy and freedom that I feel when riding is like no other.

4. I know that you are a former model and currently operate a popular vintage fashion clothing store titled, The House of Strut, located in America’s most haunted city. How do people in the fashion community react to you when they see that you ride such an iconic 80’s era moped?

For those who know me, they aren’t surprised that I’m cruising the historic district on my turquoise steel bike. The moped certainly turns heads and often creates a smile so that’s beautiful to see. I do enjoy striking up conversation about the 1st edition Honda Express, people are always interested in learning more about this iconic bike.

It’s a movement and I’m proud to be part of it.

Vintage mopeds are nostalgic, can be made to be more environmentally friendly and super fun.

Have you or your staff ever seen a ghost?

Not specifically, but items do fall off the walls and items drop to the floor unexpectedly.

I acknowledge the presence of a spirit and continue with my work.

6. What do you like most about your moped?

This was the exact model, color and year of my Grandfather's moped. So I feel fortunate to have found it and restored it to working condition.

Though he has passed, it’s an acknowledgment to the feelings joy, love and freedom that he gave to me for 33 years.

7. Do you take your moped with you when you travel?

I have taken the moped to music festivals, which provided endless fun and superior convenience. As soon as I weld the carrier to my camper I will be moped-ready for more extended travel.

8. Does your moped have a name?

Not yet. It will surface when the time is right.

9. Do you have some 24

words of wisdom you would like to share with the ladies out there who are looking to get into vintage mopeds and sincerely embrace them as a way of life?

Find a trustworthy mechanic, and learn first hand about the inner workings of your moped as well as the history.

Then, strap on a good helmet and let her rip!

1. Can you remember the performers who first influenced you in childhood?

Elvira more than anyone (for everything she is inside and out), Pee Wee Herman, Alice Cooper’s Muppet Show episode, Genie from Aladdin, Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video, and Disney’s Snow White.

2. How do you feel about women getting into vintage mopeds?

I freaking love mopeds!! I love the look of vintage mopeds, their functionality and I really love riding on them. I don’t drive cars so it gives me a great feeling of independence. I love the feeling of the wind on a summer night as I’m zipping around on a shiny vintage Puch Magnum. For any girls out there reading this that don’t really know about mopeds yet, seriously try riding on one. If you don’t want to commit to a giant motorcycle or a Vespa but still want something that goes “vroom”, a Moped may be for you. It’s so much better than a bike and they are SO MUCH FUN. I would love to see more girls riding them around in general. Especially the vintage mopeds, which look so cool and really sexy. Very pin-up friendly. I look forward to meeting more women who ride. Also, um...the rumbling vibration feels pretty great....You can’t lose!

3. You have very intense and sexy clothing choices. Why

do you dress this way?

Everything I’m wearing in this magazine is mine. No one told me what to wear for this. I style myself. And when I sit on a moped, I want to look and feel like the S&M dungeon sex goddess of the world. Even though mopeds are smaller, I don’t feel little on one. I am larger than life and I want my attitude to shine through when I blast past you on the street.

When I ride I dress like a dangerous spooky femme babe, But when I’m more casual and low-key my style is “Goth Butch Bro”. Above all, It’s my choice to be as provocative as possible in real life, on the road or in a magazine. I get 90% of my clothes from Gothic Renaissance and Trash and Vaudeville. They understand me. I’m a modern day Succubus. Get into it or get out.

4. Can you name any influences that established your aesthetic?

want people to see the name “Miss Cherry Delight” and think they’re going to get a cupcake, but instead get the ultimate goddess of the Underworld. I like to make you think I’m bringing you somewhere safe and familiar, and then take that away from you. Delightful betrayal. I would much rather make my audience scream than whistle any day. I want to stay with you long after the show is over. I want to make you feel something. It’s raw, it’s exciting, it’s deep. It’s me. That’s what matters. No one will ever tell me what to do. I’ll never hold back.

That’s a promise.

8. Who is Cherry Daddy?

Much like David Bowie had Ziggy Stardust and Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce, Miss Cherry Delight has Cherry Daddy. Cherry Daddy a more masculine/ androgynous energy. A Woman-King in a way. Because Queen isn’t enough. They’re a lot more S&M oriented, where Miss Cherry Delight is a lot more wild and femme, Cherry Daddy has more order and loves to physically discipline anyone who needs...correcting. It’s a persona I’ve been having a lot of fun with. You’ll be seeing a lot of Cherry Daddy with the more industrial elements of my music.

...The Meatcake comic book series by Dame Darcy completely changed my life as a teenager and is the true definition of my style. Sex, death, goth, punk, rock ‘n roll, blood, vampires, witches, mermaids, cobwebs, gingerbread houses, skeletons, and sweet things that are really poison.? That’s the real essence of Miss Cherry Delight and the fantasy world I come from.

5. You’re embarking on your solo music career, which is very exciting! Can you describe what you sound like?

I’ve been a professional singer for 19 years, educated primarily in classical and jazz, and this is my first time embarking on my own journey into what I have to say through songs that are for the first time, mine. I’ve been calling my music “Hypersexual Metal” “Death Blues” and “Lust Rock”, which should make the nature of what I’m producing pretty self explanatory. It’s loud, it’s sexual, creepy, unapologetic and NSFW. Straight to the point. Lots of influence from 90’s garage rock, heavy metal, blues, hard rock and industrial. I have songs about having you drink my blood which is poison cherry juice, cannibalism as a result of sexual frustration, being a Scorpio Witch High Voodoo Priestess, and a song that’s a big “fuck you” to everyone who thinks Halloween is one day out of the year.

My live performances with my band are very theatrical. You can definitely head-bang to this music, you can dance to it, you can fuck to it, you can commit crimes to it, you know...The 30

Christians will love it.

6. Who does your makeup? It’s wild!

Me. I’ve been a professional makeup artist for over a decade. I do natural beauty, vamped up stuff, drag, fantasy, and all kinds of Special FX. I am always serving face. Glitter, lashes, crazy eyeliner, I shave off my eyebrows, so sometimes I just don’t paint them on at all. I look like a sultry alien bitch. I love it. My makeup is how I express my soul.

7. You’re a pretty iconic performance artist and are known for really pushing the envelope now more than ever, especially with full nudity and fake blood.

Why? I’m a shameless free spirit and in-your-face kind of person. I’ve done some really controversial things on stage, and I’m going to keep going further. I’m no GG Allin, but I’m pretty far out there. I love to express myself at my most raw. Not just because but with purpose. There is always a reason with my storytelling, either through song or with my body, that everyone is on the same page as me with what I’m saying. I am inspired by things like Butoh, the late great Lindsay Kemp, Wendy O Williams, Mid 1990’s Marilyn Manson, and especially Alice Cooper. I’m feral. I

9. You have a pretty large and loyal fan base from being “Estrogina” for Gwar’s “Orgasmageddon” comic book series.

What was it like playing her?

Estrogina is a very special and complex character with a lot of depth and heart.

She’s not the average GWAR woman by any means. She has logic, but she also has lethal fighting skills and one hell of a sense of humor. She’s very approachable and whimsical and girly and loves to have fun, but if you piss her off, you’re gone. She has a temper. Estrogina is very protective of her Scumdog brothers and that’s why she’s so deadly. She also desperately wants revenge for Oderus’s death. She’s dangerous because she truly gives a shit. I put a lot of work into her character development when I appeared as her. It was a pleasure and honor playing her and giving her life for the Orgasmageddon Comic Book signings. I’d love to do it again someday.

10. What can we expect from you next?

My first EP is dropping on Halloween at midnight with a music video. It will be available on ITunes, Spotify, and many other places. In the future, I plan to tour with my music. Please check it out! Majesty Blaze is a writer and fashionista who describes her style as "Moth", a mashup of Mod/Goth.

She is a writing contributor and editor of Moped Mag and is also a self described Social Justice warrior.

Majesty says, "If a system does not serve everyone in the entire community, then that system is broken and must be dismantled in order to create a better one."

Dame Darcy is primarily a Cartoonist and creator of Mermaid Tarot and Queen Alice Tarot decks.

A witch, and doll crafter, she is also a musician since age 4.

Where she began her music career playing music with her Dad in Idaho at bluegrass festivals. Death By Doll with Skippy Spiral is her current music endeavor.

DD plays Banjo in a "freak folk" way, covering sea shanties from the 1800's in a mermaid costume. Also playing experimental music with traditional instruments.

In the early 90's when she won a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute, she played banjo in Caroliner Rainbow and is included in the first 4 albums, Nuff Said Records, Tinuviel Sampson, from Kill Rockstars and The Coctails also put out 7 inch records with Dame Darcy at this time while she toured with Lisa Suckdog. Spin Magazine reviewed one of her wacko 7 inches saying " Dame Darcy says yes to Autoharps".

Though influenced in the 80's by the classic old school "Dark Wave Disco" standards. Besides liking current bands today with similar influences. One of which is Eliza Rickman, (who tours with Rasputina) both are friend's of Darcy who DD has performed with.

Moped: So it looks like your current band Death

by Doll switches genres a lot.

How did this come about? And what was the start of Death by Doll?

DD: After 911 I moved to LA and met Long Gone John from Sympathy records, who funded a sea shanty album by our band Aye Aye Cap'n.

I really liked the Sea-Punk psychedelic approach of the classic Sea Shanties.

I met Skippy Spiral one fateful and magical night in the back of a museum in Hollywood.

We had both been invited there by circus trash who were our friends I hosted at my place for the evening.

That night, unbeknownst to me, Skippy followed one of the girls home and stayed at my house, so when I met him again the next night he went back to my place with a bunch of friends from Echo Park he was surprised it was the same house he had been in the night before.

We thought this was fated, eventually he began to figure out the guitar parts for the sea shanties and we were playing gigs all over LA. After that we went on a US/ Canada tour with Nora Keyes. It was wild.

Moped: OK so that explains your Sea Shanty album, produced by Emperor Penguin Records, but what about the Gasoline album? They have very different sounds.

DD: Gasoline was produced during the same time that my graphic novel was written with an accompanying screenplay. The album was released at the same time as the Graphic novel and intended to be the score for the feature film. Like many screenplays, the producers gave me money for the option and shelved the project, but the graphic novel is still available for sale on DameDarcy.com Moped: So what's going on with your new album, ElectRococo?

through the mail was a thing, they are available for download though. Skippy is on tour right now, which is why he couldn't be here for the interview.

I like old school was of doing things, like live shows and real albums. That is something that I'll always do.

DD: The sound is supposed to be a mash up of Electro and Rococo.

Skippy and I both like the classical gothic whimsical sound of harpsichord. Skippy is really good at keyboard which I think is his strongest instrument and he plays in an original way.

Moped: So Skippy is also in the southeast now?

DD: Yes, I moved here about six months before him, and got my business manager at the time to pay him to move here and for some video projects we were doing at the time. We recorded some of the tracks for ElectRococo then and since that time he has released his own album Skippy Spiral, which is a Goth dance circus clown thing mainly with key boards. It's really good!

Anyways, some of our songs are finished and some need to be mastered. Touring has to happen now to promote my latest graphic novel on Feral House, Hi Jax & Hi Jinx, my autobiography and though I don't think the entire album will be mastered in time for that, I'm confident there will be at least half a dozen or so songs ready for listening by this fall.

Today we interview one of the editors and photographers of Moped Magazine.

The Artist known internationally as PLEASANT, AKA: THE UNKNOWN. 1. I have read about your work and though you come across as very modest in person. You have a very diverse career as a contemporary Fine Artist, Street artist and Designer/Developer that spans multiple continents. Your name has appeared in all kinds of periodicals, some of which have included the New York Observer, Blackbook, Elle Magazine NL, Het Parool, The Nation Magazine and others. With various art exhibitions and creative contributions appearing at the, Bloom Art Fair, Dumbo Arts festival, Sticktogether, Clerkenwell Literary Festival, Fantagraphics, the Paris Art Walk Tour and many others. I was surprised to learn that you have exhibited multiple times with various other artists note, some of which include, Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant), Max Zorn, BustArt, Makoto Fujimura, Dame Darcy, The London Police, Uno Eins and many others. You have sold art to Richard Pryor and other major celebrities and are the person who popularized the ‘Spaceman’ street art motif. Also I must note the controversy around your Bush 5 pound note and now you have created a new Trump “Fake News” illustrated art piece. Which is being currently being exhibited at the Fantagraphics Comix Gallery in Seattle.

All this is in addition to your work in production and fashion. Do you have any words to sum up your career to those new to your work?

I guess the best word I can think of would be honest. I try to as sincere as possible in my art. I like to capture a presence in things and to add a sense of life. I want people to experience an intellectually stimulated moment and to feel and to think of an idea behind an image. These days mediocrity is everywhere. There are so few emotions associated with things today, either something is defined as “angry/negative”, or “positive”. I can’t prescribe to polarized thinking. Life is too complexed and it is quite limiting to place each experience into a box and limit its impact on the human psyche. Arts purpose is to speak to our higher consciousness, it is not always entertainment or for decoration. In creative diversity there is room for everything and every experience, reaction and expression, good, bad, angry, happy.

Pleasant art is not always Pleasant. It is a

contradiction of pleasant and unpleasant and pleasant. It is what an individual makes of it. In my work I walk a fine line between social commentary and satire fusing many different mediums like water colours, photography, film and oil paint.

2. So you are one of the photographers and editors of Moped Magazine, what inspires you and do you ride? Also did you study photography, what makes you qualified to film for a magazine?

I have been riding vintage mopeds and scooters for over 20+ years. My first moped was a Vespa Ciao. I love the nimbleness of small bikes and have a deep appreciation for their design and functionality. I began with vespas and learned them inside and out mechanically. Overtime I learned more about two stroke mechanics in a way that eventually led me away from stock setups to developing my own custom builds. Currently I own seven mopeds with my favourite being my temperamental Peugeot 103. I love to film vintage bikes for other people and get a big thrill out of seeing unique looking setups. I studied motion film, product and fashion photography in New York City. I attended Pratt Institute and am an alumnus of the New York School of Visual Arts. My father was a Painter and Graphic designer whose work is currently on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. I personally attended the VIP inauguration event for the exhibit with the President of the United States and other heads of government in 2016.

3. I know that you spend time between Europe and the United States, what are some of the differences that you see in the vintage moped scene there versus North America?

I have resided abroad and one of the things I can say is that everyone rides in western and central europe. Especially in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Scandi you have all kinds of people on scooters, bicycles and mopeds. There is greater acceptance of bikes in general there. There seems to be greater respect given to mopeds on the continent by motorcyclists, many of which began on a moped first. The culture, from my perspective, is a bit more bike focused than in the usa with a lot of race tuning and mechanical innovation taking place.

However, always look for new ways to present your creations. I came up in the 80’s and 90’s during the dawn of personal technology. However analog methods of design, film and photography were still being taught and applied then. So in a way we got the best of both world’s. However creating a fusion between art and technology is what allowed me to crossover the lines of separation between the arts and commercial industry. Never limit yourself.

Learn everything and don’t listen to the nay sayers, haters and downers. Be worldly and remember that galleries, certificates and endorsements are not what validate you as an artist. Your talent and belief in your work does. Inspire others as you have been inspired.

Always reinvent yourself and strive for truth, peace and understanding.

Though some of that is starting to trickle down into the usa in greater amounts. In the usa I see a tad bit more individuality with mopeds. It would be rare to find an 8 track mounted to a Batavus in Holland but in Delaware Look Out! Oi! =) I love that.

4. What are some words of wisdom for visual artists who just starting their creative careers?

Never give up. Being in the arts is very hard and the chips are often going to be stacked against you, especially in the 2010’s as the market is super over saturated these days.

Is a black humored, edgy social comedy based on the real life experiences of cartoonist and musician/ performance artist Dame Darcy, creator of the comix series Meat Cake. Her Gothic Lolita punk/dada life is itself is a in a no holds barred fight for social justice. Allying herself with witches, minorities, the LGBTQ community, billionaires, and Native Americans, Dame Darcy takes on reality TV, Self Publishing, fine art exhibitions, Movie production, the Patriarchy and the soaring cost of higher education. Like a mash up of Siouxsie Sioux and Alice in Wonderland.

DD starts her life on a Idaho horse ranch, raised by a cowboy poet sign painter Dad, and a Mom who has dedicated her life to empowering women through proper family planning in Public Healthcare.

Darcy also becomes a crowned Mermaid Queen of Coney Island during this time, realizing her childhood dream.

She makes experimental films and a TV show and ends up on the fancy side of SOHO living with her lawyer Fiancé, to have it all destroyed by 911, thus becoming bi-coastal when she moves to LA.

While in LA she subverts reality TV shows in order to promote her comic book Meat Cake, exhibits fine art and pitches her movie/ graphic novel Gasoline, getting it optioned and published in the process

When developing a Moped Magazine one must consider many different things, like how do we compliment an international community that is profoundly diverse? Part of that challenge for us has been to keep things balanced and in focus. As with any new approach to an established scene, it comes with its controversies. Ranging from sincere curiosity to raging infernos of hatred build on the idea that our magazine will somehow single-handedly “ruin the moped scene”. Despite all of that we must always step back and look at the big picture.

Moped Magazine shall be self contained and will always compliment the vast moped world that is already as diverse as the vintage bikes themselves. One of our goals here at Moped Magazine has been to challenge the general publics notion of what it means to moped. For some people who have never personally met a mopeder. Their perceptions may have been narrowed by a lack of representation, allowing them to give in to the idea that moped riders are of one ‘type’. Who may or may not engage in behaviour that could be considered inappropriate by the general public.

We are aware that this is an incorrect take on all moped riders. Being painted with the same brush of negativity socially is annoying at best.

Though most of us do not care what others think, it is true that part of a scene maturing is to take the next step into presenting a series of presentations that forces the greater public to respect the community. Though some people may see one side of what they consider to represent moped riders. Now there is another side that challenges what some people originally considered to be truth. By creating a three dimensional presentation we force the general public to understand that we are everything. We are the Punks, the Goths, the Tuners, the Feminists, the Activists, the Environmentally conscious, the working Daily riders, the Artists, …etc.

The comment I received that always bothered me most has been the value judgment some people in the general public have about people who ride vintage mopeds. The assumption that they somehow “can’t afford a car” or are

unable to get a “new moto”, The most extreme comments suggest that someone is somehow less educated, cultured or mature, simply because they ride a vintage moped or scooter. It is a kind of social-economic, cultural discrimination that I am sure some of you may have experienced at least once depending on your environment.

Though such comments are easily dismissed as absurd we still felt a motivation to create something that would help challenge incorrect notions about moped riders. We wanted to make something sexy and edgy with a dedication to the eras that inspired these bikes. We worked hard to establish a style that takes its creative inspiration from the punk ‘zines of old. With a kind of unpolished elegance while being mindful of not coming across as overly editorial or tacky. We are all artists who lived through the 70’s and 80’s. We are the kids from the Breakfast Club era and remember when the Pinto was new and sold at Jc Penny. We can not do the minimalist bullshit. We are gritty and like layers of texture and passion. DIY has a very special meaning to us and hails back to the days of our youth.

As we begin our journey we want to extend to you a very deep and sincere Thank you. To all of our social media supporters who showed their support from the very start and helped us to get issue one off the ground and out.

Its going to be one hell of an adventure. ...Time to Rev up.
