editor’s Note Despite the challenges and difficulties faced over the past two years of the pandemic, learning has thrived as different schools and educational companies adapted to the remote learning setup. In Kumon, this has allowed for children to continue to develop needed skills and grow in knowledge. There continue to be a lot of positive changes that can be seen in each child – even as we transition to the hybrid setup and as communities slowly adapt to the new normal. Our three featured stories are testaments to how the Kumon Method of Learning has made a positive impact on their academic and personal lives. If there is one thing that Kumon has positively changed in Xandra Gabayeron, it’s her mindset and attitude about the journey towards success. The method has instilled in her the value of not giving up and using her challenges as motivation to move forward. This has helped her be an achiever and excel in her current college journey as a mechanical engineering student. For Rasitlin Enzo Iori Chua, it’s his love for learning and his ability to learn independently that have made a positive impact in his life. He is always eager to learn more despite already studying advanced levels in Kumon and he is responsible enough to do his academic work on his own. All these skills, plus his good study habits, give him an advantage as he tackles remote learning both in school and in Kumon. As for the Alfonso family, Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso are thankful for how Kumon has allowed their children to excel in school and their chosen careers. Both the academic and life benefits gained from the method have helped make life easier for them and have prepared them for whatever future they want to achieve. We hope that these stories inspire you to continue experiencing the positive changes Kumon can make in your and your children’s lives. Potential Editorial Team Kumon Philippines

Achieving the Impossible How Kumon Helped a Young Lady Experience Positive Changes in School and Beyond

Xandra Gabayeron Kumon Completer

For most parents, summer is the best time to get their children involved and engaged in different activities. It helps divert their attention from gadgets and develop new skills or a liking for new hobbies. This was the case for Xandra Gabayeron. Initially, her mom enrolled her in the Kumon Math Program just so that she could have an activity to do during summer. “I really enjoyed Kumon, especially when I was still on par with my school level. I got really excited going to the Center, seeing my teacher, getting a star for a job well done, as well as meeting my Kumon friends.” But as the weeks passed, she was seeing Kumon as more than a summer program. It was when she was having difficulty with Level D (Long Multiplication, Long Division, Introduction to Fractions). “I went to the Center but did not finish my worksheets since I spent most of my time playing with my pencil and worksheet. When my mom found out, she asked if I wanted to quit Kumon already. However, I was able to tell my mom that I did not want to quit and I was just really struggling with the topic. My mom told me that it is okay, and I should not be frustrated. I could take my time until I would be able to master the topic. After that talk, little by little, I began to gain motivation to push through and continue with my Kumon journey.” What started out as a summer program ended up being a long-term commitment for Xandra’s academic and character development. My life, my dream

How did you manage your time between Kumon and your other activities? It was not easy, but proper time management and discipline helped a lot. I restricted myself from doing other unnecessary things until I had finished my Kumon worksheets and other activities. Of course, I had to sacrifice a little bit of my leisure time to make sure I got to finish my Kumon worksheets and my homework from school. Looking back, I can say that sacrificing a little bit of my playtime and leisure time was all worth it because of everything that I could have right now because of Kumon.

What were your challenges in your Kumon study? How did you overcome them? The biggest challenge in my journey was when I had to quit Kumon when I was nine years old (2011). I was diagnosed with a rare but serious blood disease called aplastic anemia (a condition in which my bone marrow cannot make enough new blood cells for my body to work normally). I had to be hospitalized with a team of doctors looking after me, get blood transfusions, and go through chemotherapy immediately after I had bone marrow aspiration. Ever since I was diagnosed in June 2011, I stopped Kumon. It was unfortunate because I was at the peak of my journey at that time. I had already received my Advanced Students’ Forum invitation since I was ranked 1st in the Philippines for the Math Program. It was something I was looking forward to; sadly, I had to prioritize my health first, and it was only in November 2011 that I was able to continue my Kumon journey. However, since I stopped, I had to take a Diagnostic Test again, and the results showed my new starting to be Level 4 Potential Philippines

E (Fractions). It was quite disappointing for me since I was already at Level I (Square Roots, Quadratic Equations, Inequalities, Linear and Quadratic Functions and Graphs, The Pythagorean Theorem) before I had to quit. Despite that, I am still grateful enough that Teacher Lorie allowed me to continue my Kumon journey even though I stayed at home. My mom would only pick up my worksheets from the Center because I still had a low immune system, and exposure to others would put me in danger. Thankfully, by 2012, I had fully recovered and could return to the Center. I continued the journey that I had started, and not once did I ever think of quitting again. I was able to complete the Math Program in November 2015. After completing the Math Program, I enrolled in the Reading Program, which I was able to complete in January 2017. I also completed all Level X topics in 2017.

How did your parents support you to complete the program and reach your goals? I believe that every Kumon child should have a strong support system. Going through the journey is not a walk in the park. There would be tears of struggle and, of course, tears of joy. I will admit that if it were not for my mom’s push or motivation, I would have quit the program halfway through. I am blessed to have a mom who always knows what to say whenever I am on the verge of giving up. She can be a listener when I need someone to listen to my endless complaints regarding school and other activities. She is also the best adviser whenever I need solutions to my problems. She knows how to calm me down in every way possible and sits with me in prayer when everything is too hard for me to handle. I am also thankful to my dad, an OFW, that despite the distance, he still ensures that his support would reach me.

How did Kumon develop/change you? What positive changes/ developments did you notice in yourself? Kumon played a huge role in my academic life and in developing my habits and discipline as a student. Aside from teaching me the value of punctuality since I have a schedule of going to the Center, the two best things I have developed from being a Kumon student are independence and discipline. Looking back, my Kumon teachers never spoon-fed me, especially when I made mistakes. They just made me understand why I had those mistakes and guided me to correct those on my own. In fact, before joining Kumon, I was not a self-learner because my mother would always guide me in academics and other extracurricular activities. Learning on my own allowed me to apply speed and accuracy not only to my worksheets but also to my other academic activities. Until now that I’m in my second year as a mechanical engineering student, I can still work quickly without sacrificing the quality of my work. Also, one aspect of my life that Kumon has drastically changed is how I look at the journey towards success. I have been through difficulties that not many people are aware of, and those have made me realize that there is no shortcut to success. Along with those hardships, it is still essential to have a good mindset because this is my extra push on days when I do not feel inspired. During my Kumon journey, there were times that I wanted to give up so bad, crying while solving math problems, but these did not bring me down. I always go back to the reason why I started. Do not let those minor setbacks bring you down; instead, use these as a head start to begin again.

My life, my dream

What advice can you give to How did Kumon help you in school? In your chosen career? current Kumon students who are experiencing difficulties? I can say that my Kumon journey significantly contributed to why I won quiz bees and awards during my elementary years. In Kumon, I learned how to solve fast and still arrive with correct answers. This helped me since speed and accuracy are vital to securing a place in Math Quiz bees. In fact, I was the Champion in the Math Quiz bee (MeyCiPriSA), 5th place in the Math Quiz bee (BulPriSA), and 2nd place in MTAP Division. In high school, I was able to enroll in Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science. Our subjects are advanced compared to the curriculum of other regular schools, and thankfully, I did not have a problem with my math subjects because I was already advanced in my Kumon study at that time. Currently, I am a second year Mechanical Engineering student at Mapúa University, and I can say that I am grateful that my foundation in mathematics is well established because of Kumon. I enjoy my math subjects the most and I believe it is advantageous for every engineering student to have a good foundation in mathematics because most of the subjects we have involve a lot of calculations. Also, the independence and discipline I have acquired from Kumon are now very helpful to me as an online class student. Unlike the usual setup, online classes in universities involve a lot of self-learning. We, college students, need to be responsible in handling everything we need. Especially in my case, I am a scholar and the president of an organization at Mapúa University. I believe that the foundation in values and discipline I have acquired from being a Kumon student for many years are the things I will bring for the rest of my life. 6 Potential Philippines

To those Kumon students who are currently struggling, we may not have experienced the same struggles and hardships, but we do share the same goal: to complete the program. The future may be unknown, but so are your potential and capabilities. As Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Take it from me, exactly 11 years ago, I was lying in a hospital bed, and I did not even know if I would be able to go back to Kumon and continue my journey. But look at me now, I am a second year mechanical engineering student, and a Math and Reading Completer, writing this message to inspire every Kumon student to keep their faith and not lose hope. I will be here cheering you all as you hustle to become a Kumon Completer. To God be all the glory!

Providing Opportunities to Grow and Advance How Kumon Helped a Young Boy Develop Advanced Skills and More through the Math Program

Raistlin Enzo Iori Chua Featured Student

According to various articles, there are two things that parents want their children to have in school and in any activity they become a part of: for them to be safe and for them to be provided with every opportunity for them to be successful. The second point was what Mrs. Khristine Chua considered when she decided to enroll her son, Raistlin Enzo Iori, in Kumon. “I noticed that Enzo was very quick to pick up on things. There was this list of milestones that I kept track of when he was a baby and I noticed that he was ahead of the norm. I did not think any of it at first until his dad and I noticed that he can already write the alphabet even before he was two years old and he knew how to read at age two with his first book being ‘Biscuit and his new friend’. I was so fascinated by it and thought that maybe he can do much more if we enroll him in the Kumon Math Program.” As they say, the rest is history as Enzo is currently studying Level N (Loci, Sequences and Series, Limits of Functions, Differentiation) in the Math Program and reaping the various benefits that Kumon has to offer. My life, my dream

Enzo, how does Kumon help you in your studies and in your extra-curricular activities? Kumon helps me in my studies since I already have a clue of what to do in my school lessons. I developed being a selflearner in math and random games. For example, I never imagined that I would learn calculus at this age. Also, when I did coding last year, it was easy for me to understand the instructions (like knowing where I need to put it on the grid). I am also doing well with my interactions and enjoy playing with my neighborhood friends and cousins.

What positive changes/ developments have you noticed in yourself now? My positive changes or developments have been the ability to understand how to solve problems just by looking at the example box. I just study it by myself then I would know what to do already. I am also having much more fun in school. We do not have a grading system yet until grade three, but I participate more in our school activities and enjoy joining these activities.

Mommy Tin, how has Kumon changed Enzo’s learning attitude and character? Enzo is now more independent. In school, he seldom asks for help with his homework. He always wants to be better, which has its pros and cons because he can be overly competitive sometimes. Overall, he has developed this sense of responsibility, especially when it comes to math and his studies. He is always enthusiastic about learning new stuff and often searches on the internet and researches when he wants to understand better. 8 Potential Philippines

How has Kumon helped him excel in school and her extracurricular activities? What opportunities/benefits did Kumon give your child? At the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS), I think that it is good that they do not quantify children’s performance through scores until they are in grade three. This gives them an opportunity to display what they are good at with no particular focus on the grades and subjects. The school encourages the children to develop according to their individual pace. I am blessed that Enzo understands the lessons quickly, and he is more advanced than what they are learning. His teachers are also very confident in his performance and capabilities. They know that he understands the lessons well and I am often told that he is very resourceful and creative. His teachers are also very confident that he does his homework on time.

How is his experience with remote learning in Kumon? And how has this helped him adapt to the current learning situation? Due to the pandemic, learning has become remote, and Kumon Philippines has been very quick to adapt to this new method. It was not easy at first, especially the part where we need to send photos of the answered Kumon worksheets via Messenger, but Enzo was able to adjust accordingly. This was also great because he was able to adjust well when his school also had to apply this type of learning to its students.

Enzo, what were your challenges in your Kumon study? What did you do to make it easier for you? I experienced normal difficulty in my worksheets, like always getting that one addition problem wrong in my first time and answering Level M (Trigonometry, Straight Lines, Circles) and Level N (Loci, Sequences and Series, Limits of Functions, Differentiation). Yes, those were really challenging since I had a bit of trouble memorizing some of the formulas but in the end I got used to it. I just tried to remember the example box to answer the problems. This made the problems easier in multiple points though my journey.

How do your parents motivate you to answer your worksheets and reach your goal? Both my parents tell me that I can rest if I get tired or that I can take a break. But they always tell me that quitting does not solve anything. Also, whenever I get rewards, we make sure to dine out especially before COVID-19.

My life, my dream

How do you support him in his Kumon study? How do you motivate him, especially in his low moments? I guess I supported Enzo more during his early stages of doing Kumon. I hug and kiss him when he gets frustrated and act as his cheerleader so he can keep going. Now, he enjoys his numbers too much that I provide him minimal support since I am bad at math. The support that I provide him is the bare minimum of booking the homework, submitting the homework, and paying for the fees! He is in Level N (Loci, Sequences and Series, Limits of Functions, Differentiation) in Kumon and it has been more challenging for me than for him! He is more motivated than ever! Seriously, I am very lucky that he has been very independent and diligent in working on his Kumon worksheets that I barely or never had to step in. He barely needs any motivation since he is always excited about answering his worksheets.

Mommy Tin, what challenges have you encountered as a parent? How did you overcome these? Enzo was two years old when he joined Kumon, so I think that was the most difficult time for us because he was still at the stage where he threw tantrums. Nevertheless, I think that the challenge was more because I was never good at math so being creative was how I overcame this. We do pretend play where I become his student and he patiently needs to teach me the lessons. I think that was also how he developed his liking for math and how he learned his lessons better because you cannot teach what you do not understand, right? In addition, even if I do not understand the lesson, I stay with him and watch him work on Kumon. 10 Potential Philippines

Enzo, what are your dreams? I dream to become a Kumon Completer and then enroll in Level X of the Math Program. My other dreams are being able to do a lot of stuff like more coding and designing my own game.

Mommy Tin, how has Kumon helped prepare your child for the future? Kumon has made my son more confident, self-assured, independent, and responsible. He never tires of learning, too! At seven years old, he has been thinking about how to contribute when he gets older through some out-of-the-box inventions. So more than academics, Kumon also helped Enzo to strive big and be creative.

What advice would you give to parents on how to support their child in Kumon? There will be times when your child would want to quit Kumon, especially as the problems become more difficult. When that happens, remember that taking a break is important. However, giving up should never be the answer. Always be ready to give them a hug and a kiss – then throw in some words of encouragement. They will be more resilient when they overcome difficulties so they should just keep moving forward. Aja! Jul - Dec 2022

Making positive changes in our children by nurturing skills for a lifetime

As parents and their children attend Parent Orientations, Diagnostic Test assessments and Enrollment Meetings - be it online or in the Kumon Centers, they would have expected to receive some help in academic performance. What some parents didn’t expect is the life skills that Kumon study develops. Not only does Kumon develop mathematical, reading and writing skills, Kumon also nurtures essential work and study skills that will help the students beyond the figurative confines of Kumon. These are some of the life skills that Kumon cultivates in our students:

CONCENTRATION Being able to concentrate for a period of time is a vital skill that children need to succeed in school. But in this digital era, smartphones, social media and the internet present ample distractions to take their mind off the task at hand. Kumon aims for children to finish their assigned worksheets in one sitting. After finishing a page, they are taught

to flip to the reverse side right away, and continue with the worksheet. As time goes by, they gradually develop the focus and concentration to benefit them in their studies, even outside of Kumon.

DISCIPLINE Be it in school or at work in the future, children need the discipline and time management skills to sit down and get

started with tasks or homework that needs to be completed, instead of giving in to distractions and procrastinating. In general, children attend Kumon classes twice a week - be it online or in the Kumon Centers - and Instructors assign worksheets as homework for the other five days. They have to be disciplined enough to do their Kumon homework, besides having to deal with school’s homework and other extra or co-curricular activities.

SELF-LEARNING As you might probably know, Kumon Instructors do not teach. Instead, Kumon nurtures children into self-learners, by encouraging them to answer the questions without asking for the answer.

Kumon worksheets are designed to facilitate self-learning. Explanations and examples are included in the

introductory exercises with new learning foci. Children work through the worksheets in small, incremental steps from easy to more challenging questions, under the watchful eye of our Kumon Instructors.

When children need help, they are not immediately given the answer or taught how to answer the questions. Instead, Instructors guide them with appropriate hints and questions to nudge them in the right direction, but they will have to solve the problems on their own.

Through answering the questions on their own, children gain confidence and motivation to progress further. As parents and working adults, we would realize how these skills are still essential and much sought after in our

professional environment. Indeed, these skills transcend the boundaries of Kumon, and will benefit children in their studies as well as their working life in future.

12 Potential Philippines

CONFIDENCE Confident students will be enthusiastic learners, and pave the way to academic success. When children start with Kumon, Instructors will assign a level that children can attain a perfect score with ease, based on the Diagnostic Test assessments.

There might be occasions when Instructors get children to repeat certain worksheets. The repetitions are meant to build a firm understanding of the current learning focus or concept, before moving on to a new one. Having a good foundation helps them to feel confident when approaching a new learning focus.

When the learning materials are too easy, they feel bored, but when the learning materials get too difficult, they lose the motivation to carry on. Kumon’s concept of “just-right” level is a sweet spot at which the worksheets is

neither too easy, nor too difficult, but rather at a level that is able to challenge children sufficiently and keep them motivated. As they overcome these little challenges, their confidence grow.

Instructors will also praise children appropriately, in recognition of their little achievements and to motivate

them. Some of these achievements could be, completing a set number of worksheets in one sitting for the first

time, achieving a good score for a new learning focus, or completing a set of worksheets within the prescribed Standard Completion Time etc. This helps them feel motivated to progress further.

Getting a perfect score from the get-go, then having a solid understanding of the current concept before moving to a new concept at their “just-right” level and earning praises from Instructors to celebrating little achievements help children’s confidence soar.

TIME MANAGEMENT Besides having the discipline, children will also need to manage their time in order to grapple with the other

commitments from school and other extra or co-curricular activities. With this, they will learn to manage their time – a skill that will serve them well in workplace setting.

The Kumon Instructor assigns worksheets that are “just-right” for children, which are essentially levels at which they can experience a sense of accomplishment and progress without being taught explicitly. When they are able to learn by themselves without being taught, they become more confident of their abilities.

Investing in The Future How Kumon Helped Make Things Easier For My Children’s Future Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso

parents of Kiezarie Mae and Zerjohn As parents, we will always find ways to make things better and easier for our children. This was what was in our minds when we decided to enroll our children, Kiezarie Mae and Zerjohn, in Kumon. Our initial goal was to let our daughter, Kiezarie, be part of the Reading Program since this will give her additional guidance in English and reading because of the difficulties she was experiencing in school. After a month, we saw the benefits she was reaping so we decided to enroll our son, Zerjohn, in the Math Program. The intention of these enrollments was to help our children so that they may be able to keep up with their school and possibly enhance their performance and grades. Our Kumon journey, however, was not a bed of roses. There were challenges, specifically the effort of continuously updating and reminding our children of their homework for school and Kumon. 14 Potential Philippines

We had to find ways to explain how important Kumon is, especially for their future studies and career. As parents, we also tried to level our mindset to ensure that we properly understood how difficult it is for our children and monitor if they are too stressed because of their routine. What pushed us to continue the program until their completion was seeing the results of their efforts based on their academic grades and their character development. So how did Kumon benefit our children? Here are four ways:

1. Excellence in School After mastering the basic topics in the Kumon levels, our children moved on to tackling subjects not yet reached by their peers in school. They were able to excel in their school subjects in math and reading because the topics taught in school were already taught in Kumon. I remember how Zerjohn initially hated doing Kumon. It was only after experiencing firsthand how math became easy because of Kumon that he was able to understand why we enrolled him in the program. Furthermore, after completing the Kumon Math Program, my children were even able to use the advanced topics in college.

2. Time management During their Kumon enrollment, we consistently reminded them that Kumon was a priority before any other activity. As parents, we encouraged and taught them how to prioritize their activities. While there were difficulties in balancing their school workload and Kumon, I think these experiences helped them balance different activities in their college life and their current work life.

While it can be exhausting and tedious, the constant flow of encouragement is important in Kumon. We must always remind our children that Kumon is there to help them, and that being a part of Kumon is a privilege since not all families have the resources to enroll in supplementary programs. Yes, it is understandable that they will feel overwhelmed and stressed from time to time. So it is also our responsibility as parents to acknowledge their emotions, properly comfort them to prevent them from burning out, and try to associate Kumon as a happy and beneficial experience for them.

3. Increased confidence I have observed that Kumon has developed in my children the ability to self-learn and the love for learning. Aside from their grades, it was also evident that our children were more relaxed and confident in their math subjects. It may have stemmed from when their classmates started calling them “Kumon kids” partly because of their performance as a top scorer in their math subject, and because they can be observed answering their Kumon homework during their free time in the classroom.

4. Appreciation of the big and the small No achievement was left unacknowledged. Every minor and major milestone was celebrated in their own ways. We express our approval of their accomplishments and efforts by giving them small rewards. Also, I cannot count how many times we ate at the McDonalds near the Kumon Center as a minor celebration for every award and level-up. 16 Potential Philippines

Instructors’ Quotes

Nurul Dini binti Omar Kumon Malaysia

Students shall master the fundamentals of a subject in order to study beyond their grade level. Students with positive attitude always have a brighter chance to learn more. They are always curious as to what’s coming next once they’re done with one level. Kumon daily worksheets help to develop positive attitude such as self-discipline which will help them to learn about responsibility at a very young age. Self-discipline is a long term value that will feed one’s focus. Focus breeds punctuality, dependability and productiveness. Students often feel motivated when they can finally do the learning focus that they can’t do before. It increases their confidence and develops their interest in studying.

As children appear through the screens of our gadgets and walk through the doors of our Kumon Centers around the region, we have made some positive impact on them - be it big or small. Let’s read on and find out how our Instructors have helped them, and what are some of the positive changes they’ve seen.

While the pandemic limited us in doing some things, it welcomed new possibilities in Kumon. Online instruction has allowed us to have two-way observation in terms of: • Parents seeing us instruct students online, and applying the same instructions as students answer their Kumon worksheets at home. • Instructors seeing each student’s home study situation, and making appropriate suggestions for improvement. • Online instruction establishing more meaningful connections with parents through more frequent and immediate communication. In this way, both Center and home support have become in-sync, making positive changes in children much more effective than ever before. Indeed, regardless of the mode, Kumon really works! And I am happy to be a part of this effective learning method.

As the ability to learn independently is an essential habit for school and life, the Kumon Mathematics and English Programs develop self-learning skills and confidence in students. Kumon students use the examples in the worksheets to self-learn their way through difficult problems. Their Kumon Instructors provide individualized study plans and guidance for the students to make smooth progress at a comfortable pace. I believe it is the core of the Kumon Method that allows students to continuously experience the joy of self-learning in real life and to be proactive and confident in everything they do. As a Kumon Instructor, I always feel grateful and proud to see students grow into well-rounded individuals who excel academically and in life.

During these trying times, we must encourage our children to realize the importance of taking small steps and doing little things in great ways; for they are the future- who would fill the world with sunshine and will turn things around for a better tomorrow! The best gift we can inculcate in them is responsibility and independence & as our founder quotes, “There is a limit to how much one can teach, but there is no limit to how much one can advance through self-learning.”

The Origins of the Kumon Method
