INTRODUCTION OF CHILD AND FAMILY The Proud Family is an extended family consisting of Penelope Marie Proud (Penny), twin younger siblings Bebe and Cece Proud, her parents Trudy and Oscar Proud, Suga mama, her paternal grandmother and Puff, her beloved poodle.

The Proud Family resides at 1433 Kelly Rd. Wizville, CA. and Penny is a student at Willy T. Ribbs Middle school. She is a straight A student, talented singer, on the football team and part of the school Newspaper staff. She also recites poetry competitively. Penny is an overachiever, very logical, reliable and a good friend.

At home, she is constantly stuck babysitting the twins or keeping her wrestling-loving sassy grandmother, Suga Mama company. Sometimes her father expects her help with his unsuccessful snack business but she did rather hang out with her friends.

Penny is a 14 year old typical teenager with black hair tied into two curly pigtails. She is 5’2” and weighs 46 kg (101 pds). She appears healthy, confident and well-kept.

The Proud Family is a traditional African American family with generic American values and religious ties. Trudy is the main bread winner as she is a Veterinarian while Oscar’s business is having a hard time taking off. Oscar Proud is very overprotective over Penny, habitually denying her requests to go out or socialize with boys. Trudy is more logical and level-headed often overriding Oscar’s rules and instead allowing Penny to go out. However, she is always quick to remind Penny to make sure her room is tidy and to keep her curfew. The twins are mostly treated as a single unit and often get their way with their parents more easily than Penny does.

Social Network Adolescents are social and group minded. Peers and best friends serve as a source of identity and belonging (Perry et al., 2014). Penny loves her best friend Dijonay. Her peer group also includes Zoey, Sticky and LaCienega, her frenemy. Like all teenagers, she has a crush; Fifteen Cent Kwok Wong. Penny also spends a lot of time with her twin siblings and Suga Mama. Suga Mama teaches the kids various life lessons .

Penny is not depicted as religious but has love for and is influenced by African American culture, poetry and music.

Trudy and Oscar Proud practice democratic style parenting where Penny is given rules with reasons to explain each rule (Perry, Honkenberry, Lowdermilk & Wilson, 2014). However on many occasions her parents, especially Trudy, will deviate from the rules or facilitate a compromise with open communication to enable Penny to have a normal social life. In return, she is asked to keep up with her chores and good grades.

Suga Mama, is a good buffer in situations where Oscar is extremely authoritative. This brings good balance to the Proud Family parenting style.

Growth and Development Penny Proud, at 14 year is transitioning into womanhood. This transitional stage begins with onset of puberty characterized by development of primary and secondary sex characteristics. Various physical changes like breast development, menstruation, axillary and pubic hair transpire (Perry et al., 2014). Females like Penny usually gain 7-25kg in weight and about 5-25 cm in height (Perry et al., 2014). Penny is 46 kg and 157.48 cm therefore her BMI is 19.9. Penny appears to be on track with her growth and development milestones (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017).

Fine Motor Skills and Gross Motor Skills Fourteen year-olds like Penny should have well developed fine motor and gross motor skills. Participation in regular physical activities enhances both fine and gross motor skills development especially in growing children and teenagers (Van Niekerk, Du Toit & Pienaar., 2016) like Penny. As such they should be able to play various sports, video games, musical instruments, read and care for others i.e. younger siblings and pets.

Penny Proud is can sing, writes and recites poetry, plays football, once attempted cheerleading and often babysits her siblings Bebe and Cece. Penny has managed to meet all age appropriate milestones pertaining to both gross and fine motor skills.

Cognitive Development [Piaget] Formal Operations (11-15yrs) Teenagers like Penny can evaluate their thinking, maintain long attention spans and use logic to make decisions. They are imaginative, have varying ideas and know that their actions can affect others. They can think beyond present times and consider different variables in decision making (Perry et al., 2014). Penny demonstrates this by using her logical reasoning against her dad’s unfair rule preventing her from going to concerts. She finally convinces her mother to side with her and let her go out by explaining why it was unfair as well as giving reasons as to why it would be of benefit if she attended the concert.

Psychosocial Development [Erikson] Identity vs Role confusion (12-18yrs) Adolescents develop rapidly physically and construct a personal identity based on comparing themselves to peers, friends and culture. Here, they acquire roles as they integrate what they have learned from society with their own formed self concepts (Perry et al., 2014). Penny once attempted to try out for the cheer team because her best friend Dijonay and her frenemy LaCienega were on the team. She wanted to belong and identify with them, as a cheerleader.

Moral Development [Kohlberg] Postconventional or principled level Adolescents define correct behavior in relation to individual rights, justice and standards set by society (Perry et al., 2014). Penny once got subjected to unfair treatment and bullying from the Gross sisters, however she exercised good moral judgement and treated everyone fairly especially after she learned that the Gross sisters actually needed money for their own self care and hence opted to bully kids for it. It is not right at all but needed on the basis of survival .

Penny is 5’2’’ or 157.48 cm and weighs 46 kg with a BMI of 19.9 (normal) at 14 years old. Based on the recommendations from the (CDC, 2017), the average 14 year old girl is 160 cm in height and weighs approximately 50 kg with a BMI of 19.6. According to these averages, Penny is a healthy teenager. Adolescents undergo rapid growth and development therefore they require increased nutrients especially calcium, iron, vitamin B, folic acid and zinc (USDA, 2014) The USDA recommends that girls between 10-19 should increase intake of wholegrain, vegetables rich in color, iron containing foods and low-fat dairy products with reduced sweets and increased physical exercise (USDA, 2014).

Penny’s exact diet is unknown however during The Proud Family theme song, Penny snatches her father’s steak, waffles, chicken and milk. Trudy prepares chitlins when they have company. Also Trudy is seen asking Oscar to cook healthier options like grilled fish instead of “hot links” and burgers during a family barbeque. Occasionally, Penny cooks curly fries for her father as a form of bribery. Her dietary choices are by far not healthy ones.

Orem’s Self-care Requites for 11-16 Year old Child Feelings - Met. Penny is a happy and energetic child however when she is upset, she seeks console from her mother Trudy or her grandmother Suga Mama and her best friends Dijonay and Sticky.

Family and Friends - Met. Penny has a great family including her sassy Suga mama that she can always count on.

She has good best friends Dijonay, Zoey and Sticky plus all the kids at school easily relate to her.

Sex and sexuality - Partial met. Penny has a crush on Fifteen Cent Kwok Wong but her father Oscar will not let her date however at her age, she is interested in dating. She has no issues with her sexual orientation either.

Drugs or alcohol - Met. Penny and her peer group do not experiment with drugs, tobacco or alcohol so there is no risk of substance abuse for her or influence from her peers.

Social Development

The USDA recommends that young adults Penny’s age should consume diets rich in whole grains, vegetables, iron containing foods and low-fat dairy products with reduced sweets. Also increase in minerals and vitamins is warranted to support the rapidly developing teenager’s body.

Interventions ● Encourage healthy nutrition and caloric intake accompanied by increased physical activity (Perry et al., 2014). ● Teach about balanced diets and recommendations available at USDA’s choosemyplate.gov (USDA, 2014) ● Encourage healthy food selections especially for teenagers like Penny who eat on the go or have generic African American diets made up of mostly fried foods (Perry et al., 2014).

Adolescents learn and develop independence, identity and maturation from peers and social groups. Penny belongs to a good peer group where they often influence each other in positive ways. Best friends are also important at this time, she has Dijonay.

Interventions ● Encourage sociability and peer group involvement (Perry et al., 2014) ● Promote an environment that encourages asking questions about sexuality and practising safe sex (TeensHealth, n.d) ● Encourage independence and healthy fulfilling leisure time activities including attending sporting events, concerts, poetry jams and art exhibits (Perry et al., 2014).

Physical Development

Safety

A 14 year old like Penny undergoes tremendous physical development including sexual maturation, increase in height and weight as well as some unwanted changes like acne.

Penny’s physical development is on track for her age however periodic health screenings and physicals are needed.

Interventions ● Encourage healthy nutrition and caloric intake to support the rapid growth and development (Perry et al., 2014) ● Promote good sleep and rest habits during this time (Perry et al., 2014) ● Encourage and participate in health screening especially for scoliosis, dental hygiene and immunizations (Perry et al., 2014).

Adolescents like Penny are impulsive and risk takers therefore we must teach them to practice safety. Penny plays football with boys and rides in cars with her peers on her way to attend social events in a big urban city. Both activities require extreme safety measures for Penny.

Interventions ● Teach Penny to always use protective gear and correct technique when playing football (TeensHealth, n.d). ● Use seat belts, avoid use of electronics when driving (TeensHealth, n.d) . ● Have a chaperon, use uber or start driving classes as soon as possible (TeensHealth, n.d)

Quality and Safety Education for Nurses [QSEN] addresses how health care providers and future nurses acquire knowledge with a core goal of improving safety during patient centered care (QSEN, 2014). For Penny, it is imperative to encourage use of safety gear during sports activities and a nutritious healthy diet that supports appropriate growth.
