Velkommen til osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024

Åpningstider og tilgjengelighet varierer og speiler prosjektenes karakter. Noen er performancer av kort varighet. Du må være på et bestemt sted på et bestemt tidspunkt for å kunne se dem.

Andre er tilgjengelige døgnet rundt. Noen av prosjektene foregår på ett sted, andre eksisterer parallelt på flere steder og i et par tilfeller flytter de seg rundt om i byen. Felles for alle stedene og situasjonene er at de er valgt av deltakerne i biennalen.

Med få unntak er verkene nye produksjoner.

Uttrykksformene er vidt forskjellige og inkluderer performancer, installasjoner, tekstarbeider, lydverk, bygningskonstruksjoner og skulpturer, for å nevne noen. For å kunne se og oppleve prosjektene må du bevege deg gjennom byen, til fots, på sykkel eller ved hjelp av offentlig transport.

Kunstopplevelsene vil blande seg med opplevelsen av byen. Det handler om kunst i direkte berøring med hverdagsliv. Når kunstverk vises der folk bor, jobber eller går forbi, skjer det noe med hvordan vi opplever dem. Oppmerksomheten og roen du finner i gallerier og museer, finnes ikke her. Det gjør heller ikke kunstinstitusjonenes faste definisjoner av hva som er kunst og ikke.

Kunstopplevelsen blir i stedet viklet inn i og farget av ting og hendelser som kontinuerlig foregår i offentlige rom.

Kunst i offentlig rom trenger en annen formidling enn kunst i museet. Derfor har osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 laget et sammensatt formidlingsprogram som presenteres i denne guiden. Utover omvisninger som formidler historien bak enkelte av

kunstverkene, samarbeider biennalen med en rekke institusjoner, organisasjoner og frivillige som deltar og bidrar til biennalens formidlingsprogram gjennom sin involvering og medvirkning i konkrete prosjekter.

Biennalen har til den første lanseringen i mai også invitert deltakere som ved hjelp av ulike verktøy gir nye perspektiver og tilnærminger til formidling av kunst i offentlig rom. Det inkluderer en kombinert produksjons- og formidlingsagent, et forskningsprosjekt som gjør bruk av publikumsinvolvering og en turguide i form av et kart som inviterer deg til å gå deg bort i møte med kunsten og byen. Disse spesielt utformete formidlingsprosjektene retter seg både mot publikum og mot biennaleorganisasjonen. Målet er å teste ut nye tilnærmingsmetoder til formidling og lære av disse.

Formidlingsprosjektene er beskrevet i denne guiden på linje med kunstprosjektene. osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 har ikke et overordnet tema som verkene skal forstås i lys av. I stedet er biennalen organisert rundt strukturer og metoder som inviterer til nytenkning rundt produksjon, utstilling, formidling og samling av kunst, innenfor den spesielle sammenhengen kunst i offentlig rom.

osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 has launched a new biennial model – an evolving program of art in public space and the public sphere. During a five-year period, the audience will be able to see and experience projects with varying tempos, rhythms and time spans. These will take place all over Oslo and in some cases further afield.

Opening hours and availability vary according to the characteristics of each project. Some are performances of short duration. You will need to be in a certain place at a specific time to see them. Others are available 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Some projects take place in one particular place, others exist in parallel, in several places and times at once, and in a few cases they move from one situation to another. All sites, contexts and situations have been chosen by participants in the biennial.

Most works have been newly produced for the biennial. The types of work differ widely and include performances, installations, textbased works, sound pieces, constructions and sculptures, to name a few.

To see and experience the projects, you will have to move through the city, on foot, bicycle or public transport. The art experiences will alter your usual experience of the city. This is art in direct contact with everyday life. When a work of art appears in a place where people live, work or pass through, something happens to our experience of both the place and the work. The attention and concentration that galleries and museums invite are subject to all sorts of outside interference here. The art institutions' definitions of what art is or is not do not apply. Instead, our experience of art is entangled with and colored by other things, situations and events, large and small, that are continually taking place in public spaces and the public sphere.

Art in public spaces demands different types of public outreach from art in the museum. So osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024

has created a composite public outreach programme. In addition to guided tours to explain the history of some of the works of art, other forms of outreach have been developed in collaboration with a range of institutions, organizations and volunteers, who are also participating and contributing to the biennial programme and to the development and production of certain works.

For its launch in May 2019, the biennial has invited participants to provide new perspectives and approaches to public outreach using a range of tools and methods including: the involvement of a combined production and public outreach agent, a research project that makes use of audience involvement, and a tour guide in the form of a map that invites you to get lost as a means of engaging with works of art and the city. These specially designed public outreach projects target both the audience and the biennial organization itself. The aim is to test new approaches to public outreach and to learn from them. This guide describes both the art projects on view and the outreach projects that respond to them. osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 does not have an overall theme determining the interpretation of the works on display. Instead, the biennial is organized around structures and methods that invite new thinking about the production, exhibition, public outreach and the possibility of building art collections, within the special context of public space and the public sphere. osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 lanserer en ny biennalemodell i form av et skiftende program med kunst i offentlig rom.

I løpet av en femårsperiode vil publikum kunne se og oppleve verk og prosjekter med varierende tempo, rytmer og varigheter. Disse vil foregå over hele Oslo og i noen tilfeller også utenfor byen.

Direktørens forord

Oslo gjennomgår den ene kosmetiske operasjonen etter den andre, i kontinuerlig smertelig transformasjon. Det tas små kutt av byens karakter. Verftsindustrien, tekoindustrien, nesten all matindustri, margarinfabrikker og såpefabrikker, slaktere og fiskehandlere.

Havna presses lenger og lenger ut. Lages det fremdeles sjokolade i Oslo? Det brennes kaffe på Filipstad, så det lukter nybrent når man rusler gjennom Slottsparken på vei til jobb.

Det er da noe.

Biennalekunstneren Lisa Tan minte meg om en linje fra et dikt av Frank O’Hara; «Now I’m quietly waiting for the catastrophy of my personality to seem beautiful again, and interesting and modern». Det er et godt bilde, og et kunstverk vil kunne handle om denne følelsen av resignasjon.

Resignasjon er imidlertid ingen god strategi for en biennale.

har et nært, nesten symbiotisk forhold til byen sin. Byen består ikke av tegl og stein og betong og jern og bronse alene. Det består også av alle dem som har tilhold her, og som føler eierskap til disse rommene. Vi er alle en del av byens kropp. Det er kanskje fordi jeg kom hit nesten voksen og likevel føler at dette er min by, at jeg skulle ønske at Oslo kunne være et slikt sted for alle som bosetter seg her.

Mitt ønske for osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 er at vi skal bidra til at byens befolkning i enda større grad tar eierskap til sine rom, og at vi legger til rette for kritisk refleksjon om kvalitetene i fellesskapet. Samtidig er det vårt mandat fra Oslo kommune og Kulturetaten at vi med biennalen etablerer et nytt og autonomt kunstprogram som programmerer, produserer, utplasserer og formidler kunst i offentlig rom.

Kommunens åpne generøsitet i etableringen av osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 imponerer meg, særlig fordi jeg tror det er et svært godt verktøy for selvrefleksjon. Selvrefleksjon og en liten ironisk avstand kan redde en ellers håpløs personlighet og kanskje til og med gjøre den vakker, interessant og relevant i vår tid. Å endre eller påvirke byens «personlighet» kan vi selvfølgelig ikke utrette alene, men vi kan bidra. I forlengelsen av dette vil prosjektet vårt også bli interessant for et internasjonalt publikum.

osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 driver likevel ikke med byutvikling. Vi driver med byinnvikling. Vi vil utfordre innenfra. Vi deler identitet med byen, personlighet også – kanskje. Jeg føler i alle fall dette felleskapet veldig sterkt. Så tett at det av og til kan være vanskelig å avgjøre hvor jeg slutter og byen begynner. Det kan gi seg utslag som at jeg blir fysisk dårlig av tanken på at man kan finne på å rive Y-blokka. Noen med mangelfullt mandat – og demokratiforståelse, i alle fall slik jeg ser det – vil ta fra meg noe som er mitt.

One of the most truly happy days I have experienced was the day I moved to Oslo. I was 19. I can remember the exact moment, and exactly where I was standing when I realized that from this day on my life was my own.

It was probably an illusion, but that’s how it felt. I come from a place – little more than a crossroads – in Sunnmøre, and that crossroads is of course engraved on my soul. But ever since that August day in 1986, Oslo has been my city.

Oslo is undergoing one cosmetic operation after another, in a continuous series of painful transformations. Small chunks are cut out of the city’s character: the shipyard industry, the garment industry, almost all of the food industry, margarine factories and soap factories, butchers and fishmongers. The harbour is forced farther and farther out. Is chocolate still produced in Oslo? Coffee is roasted in Filipstad. You can smell its freshly roasted aroma when you amble through Slottsparken on your way to work. At least that’s something.

The biennial artist Lisa Tan reminded me of a line from a poem by Frank O’Hara: “Now I’m quietly waiting for the catastrophe of my personality to seem beautiful again, and interesting and modern.” It’s a fine image, and a work of art could be created about this feeling of resignation. However, resignation is not a good strategy for a biennial.

All the same, the osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 is not concerned with urban development. We are concerned with urban involvement. We want to challenge from within. We share an identity with the city – a personality too, perhaps. At any rate I feel this solidarity very strongly. So strongly that it can sometimes be difficult to tell where I end and the city begins. This means that I feel physically ill at the thought that someone can think of tearing down the ‘Y-block’. Someone with no mandate to do so – and no understanding of democracy, or so I see it – wants to take something from me that is mine.

An art programme like that of osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 confronts a public that has a close, almost symbiotic relationship with its city. The city space consists not only of bricks and stone, concrete, iron and bronze.

It also consists of all those who belong here and feel an ownership. We are all part of the body of the city. Perhaps it’s because I came here as almost an adult, and still feel this is my city, that I wish Oslo to be such a place for everyone who settles here.

My wish for osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 is that we should help the population of the city to claim own­ership of their space to an even greater extent, and that we should lay the basis for critical reflection about the qualities of the community. At the same time it is our mandate from Oslo City Council and the Agency for Cultural Affairs that with the biennial we establish a new, autonomous programme which schedules, produces, locates and presents art in public space. The frank generosity of the Council in establishing osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 impresses me, especially because I believe it is a very good tool for self-reflection. Self-reflection and a little ironic distance can save an otherwise hopeless personality, and perhaps even make it beautiful, interesting and relevant to its time.

Changing or influencing the city’s ‘personality’ is of course something we cannot manage on our own, but we can make a contribution. In addition to this, our project will also be interesting to an international public.

En av de reneste lykkedagene jeg har opplevd, er den dagen jeg flyttet til Oslo. Jeg var 19 år gammel. Jeg kan huske et spesifikt øyeblikk og akkurat hvor jeg stod da det gikk opp for meg at herfra og ut var livet mitt eget. Det var nok en illusjon, men det føltes sant da.

Jeg kommer fra et veikryss på Sunnmøre, og veikrysset er selvfølgelig gravert i sjela, men helt siden denne augustdagen i 1986 har Oslo vært min by.

Kuratorenes introduksjon

Tenk deg et bibliotek av levende bøker som åpner seg når som helst og hvor som helst, som vokser over tid, og som underveis lar seg lese av dem som har tid til å lytte. Eller hva med en skulptur av levende mennesker som står og glaner, og som dukker opp på et titalls steder i byen over flere måneder. Forestill deg tekster på forskjellige språk sprayet på offentlige vegger, tekster som sier noe om byen, og som brått blir borte eller gradvis forsvinner. Og hvorfor ikke en skulptur av en bil med indisk opphav som over en hel sommer trilles rundt i Oslos nylig etablerte bilfrie sone; en gjest fra et annet sted som infiltrerer og speiler Oslos nye grense. Og se for deg en serie performancer utført av personer som beveger seg gjennom byen mens de uttaler fragmenter av en samtale som en gang vil bli samlet til en helhet.

Kunstverkene som er beskrevet ovenfor, er del av osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024.

Du finner en nærmere beskrivelse av dem i denne guiden. Felles for disse verkene er at de finner sted og utfolder seg i offentlige rom, på steder der eierskap og kontroll er underlagt et sammensatt sett av tause konvensjoner og reell lovgivning. Noen ganger er reglene selvregulerende, andre ganger blir de aktivt håndhevet, men likevel er de også ofte åpne for reforhandlinger, undergraving eller lovbrudd.

Disse arbeidene passer ikke inn i tidsrommet til en utstilling. De varer enten for kort eller for lenge, eller de opererer i sekvenser eller tidsrom som ingen vanlig åpningstid kan fange opp. De er kunstverk som etablerer sine egne rom og tider.

Hvordan produseres og presenteres slike arbeider? Hvordan forholder de seg til publikum?

Hvordan kan de bli innlemmet i en kunstsamling?

Hva slags kuratoriske rammeverk kan støtte opp om disse arbeidene på en måte som strekker seg utover en enkeltstående presentasjon?

Og hvordan kan dette rammeverket utformes og etableres? Dette er hovedutfordringene til osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024, og de følger med det å være vertskap for kunstnere som arbeider i offentlige rom og på offentlige steder, på måter som utfordrer konvensjonelle forestillinger om hva kunst i den offentlige sfære kan være og gjøre.

Biennalens produksjonsressurser inkluderer et besøksprogram for kunstnere, en filmproduksjonsenhet og en radiostasjon. Disse befinner seg i biennalens hovedbase i Myntgata 2. På biennalens initiativ er hovedbasen samlokalisert med 60 atelierer som leies ut til oslobaserte kunstnere. Dette uttrykker en av biennalens hovedambisjoner, nemlig å bygge infrastruktur og legge til rette for kunstproduksjon som skjer i kontakt med den lokale kunstscenen. osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 har ikke et overordnet tema som verkene skal forstås i lys av. I stedet er biennalen organisert rundt strukturer og metoder for tilvirking av kunst, for å nå ulike målgrupper og for å påvirke kulturpolitikk. Når kunstverk entrer offentlige rom, møter de et sammensatt publikum av forbipasserende.

Hvordan skjer dette møtet når institusjonen som står bak, ikke har noen synlig tilstedeværelse og heller ikke kontrollerer rommet verket vises i? Kan biennalen bli en slik usynlig, men like fullt tilstedeværende institusjon som formidler kunst i offentlige rom? Kanskje det å revurdere og tenke nytt om tilgangen til kunst handler om å skrive kunsten inn i hverdagen, utover utstillingens tradisjonelle tidsrammer og fremvisningsmåter?

Monumenter, bronseskulpturer og arkitektoniske utsmykninger. Harde og bestandige ting som pryder plasser og bygg. Er det dette som er kunst i offentlige rom? Ofte er det slik, men det finnes også helt andre kunstuttrykk og måter for kunstnere å jobbe med kunst på utenfor museer og gallerier. Det å teste ut nye uttrykksformer og å utfordre oppfatningen av hva som er kunst, skjer like godt utenfor som inne i den hvite kuben.

Biennalen finner sted fra 2019 til 2024, med et stadig voksende program av kunstnere og prosjekter og både nye og eksisterende kunstverk med varierende tempo, rytmer og varighet. Dette gjør det mulig å arbeide med nye kunstproduksjoner samtidig som vi reflekterer over det som allerede eksisterer eller har skjedd, og å operere bortenfor etablerte definisjoner av temporalitet og varighet, produksjon og deltakelse, permanens, forstyrrelser og/eller aktivering av offentlige rom. osloBIENNALEN FØRSTE UTGAVE 2019-2024 inviterer publikum til å utforske Oslos offentlige rom gjennom tilvirkning og visning av kunstverk som går i dialog med byens fortid, nåtid og fremtid.

Kunstverkene i biennalen vil ta deg til steder du kanskje ikke kjente til, eller ville kommet over i ditt hverdagsliv. Curators’ introduction

Imagine a growing library of living books that can open up at any time, in any place, available to any reader who has the time to listen. Or a tableau vivant of staring figures, appearing and re-appearing in dozens of places around the city over a period of several months. Think of texts in different languages spray-canned on walls, texts that say something about the city, and that may suddenly be erased or gradually fade. Or a mobile sculpture of a car of remote origins that moves about the new car-free zone, a guest from abroad that has crossed frontiers and reminds us of newly drawn boundaries. Imagine a succession of performers moving through the city uttering fragments of conversation that will one day be gathered into a whole.

The artworks described above are all part of osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024.

You will find a more detailed description of each of them in this guide. Common to these works is that they happen and unfold in public space and the public sphere, whose ownership and control is subject to a complex set of tacit conventions and real legislation, whether self-regulating or actively enforced, and yet are often open to negotiation, subversion, or law-breaking. These works must operate beyond the opening hours of an exhibition.

Their duration is either too short or too long; they may operate in sequence or across a time span that a regular timetable cannot easily contain. These are works of art that establish and occupy their own times and spaces.

How are such works created and presented? How do they relate to audiences? How can they be incorporated into an art collection? What kind of curatorial framework can support works of art that extend beyond a single presentation?

And how can this framework be shaped and established? These are the challenges facing osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024, all of them essential components of the biennial’s invitation to artists to work in ways that challenge conventional notions of what art in public space and the public sphere can be and do.

The biennial’s production resources include a visiting artist programme, a film production unit and a radio station. These are located at the biennial’s headquarters at Myntgata 2. On the initiative of the biennial, the building also houses around sixty studios let to Oslo-based artists. This reflects a key ambition of the biennial: to embrace and foster art in-themaking within the context of Oslo’s existing art scene. osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 does not have an overall theme determining the interpretation of the works on display. Instead, the biennial is organized around structures and methods for the making of art, for reaching diverse audiences, and for influencing cultural policy. In this way, the Biennial embraces new thinking on art production, exhibition, public outreach and collecting in the particular context of art in public space and the public sphere. These structures are grouped under four headings: — Art production within a locality — New institutional ecologies — Addressing the myriad — A collection for the passerby The four headlines mirror some of the phases a work of art may pass through, from the genesis of the idea to the final outcome. Artworks are made, they are taken care of by art institutions, they are presented to an audience and they might be included in a collection that ensures

their long-term afterlife, and may influence the ways in which they are received and read.

For art in public space, these phases differ from those of art intended for the gallery or museum. This affects the way art in public space is made, the art institution’s involvement and presence, the work’s engagement with an audience and the potential existence of art collections in and for public space.

When a work of art enters public space, it meets a diverse audience of passersby. How does this function when the institution backing the initiative does not have a visible presence and does not control the context in which the work appears?

How might the biennial operate as an invisible yet equally present institution dedicated to hosting art in public space? Perhaps rethinking access is a matter of inscribing art in everyday life, beyond the timeframe of the exhibition or event, and its habitual display devices.

Monuments, bronze sculptures and architectural adornments. Hard and durable things that embellish places and buildings. This is what is sometimes thought of as art in public space.

But there are of course other artistic expressions and ways of making art outside the museum or art gallery. New forms of artistic expression and challenges to the accepted understandings of what art is can happen both inside and outside the white cube.

The biennial will unfold over five years, from 2019 to 2024, with an evolving program of artists and projects, including new and existing works of art with varying tempos, rhythms and durations. This involves working on new production, while reflecting on what already exists or has taken place, operating beyond established definitions of temporality and permanence, production and participation, ongoingness, disruption and/or the activation of public space. osloBIENNALEN FIRST EDITION 2019-2024 invites the public to explore Oslo’s public spaces and the public sphere through the production and display of works of art that interact with the city, its past, present and future.

The works of art in the biennial will take you to places you perhaps would not come across in everyday life or do not know. They interact with and make use of facts and stories that are not well known; they give visibility and voice to all sorts of things, big and small, which we do not normally notice, or which we choose

Når var sist gang du hadde innflytelse over hva som skjer i det offentlige rommet? Mikaela Assolents prosjekt under osloBIENNALEN vil gi deg nettopp dette! Hun står bak prosjektet The Body-Double, der en formidler går rundt blant publikummere på biennalen og innleder samtaler med dem som en slags agent. Det kan være i form av åpne spørsmål eller diskusjoner, dialoger rundt verkene, eller lytting på klager eller ros. Ofte er det slik at museer og biennaler har formidlere som forklarer oss hva vi skal se, og hvordan en ser kunst på riktig måte. Assolents forsker skal i stedet lytte til publikummere som deg, og se hva hun selv kan lære. Lærdommen fra samtalene med publikum blir resultatet av forskningsprosjektet, som deretter vil bli formidlet til biennalens kunstnere og kuratorer.

På denne måten vil du faktisk kunne få et ord med i laget om hvordan en biennale forstås og formidles. Kanskje vil den være helt annerledes i framtida, takket være deg?

When have you ever had a say in what happens in public space? Mikaela Assolent’s project during osloBIENNALEN will give you just that!

In her research project The Body-Double, a researcher walks around among the public and initiates conversations with individuals or small groups. This may take the form of open questions or discussions, dialogues around the works, or listening to complaints or praise.

Often museums and biennials have guides who explain to us what we are looking at, and how to view art in the proper way. Instead, this researcher will listen to members of the public and learn from what she hears. The lessons learned from conversations with the public will be the outcome of the research project, which will be conveyed to artists participating in the biennial and its curators. In this way you will actually have a say in the wider appraisal and understanding of the biennial. Perhaps, thanks to your inputs, it will be quite different in the future?

Mikaela Assolent (1985, Frankrike) er en kunstpedagog som forsker på hvordan feministiske strategier kan brukes til å utfordre maktstrukturer i utstillingsinstitusjoner.

Hun ser på hvordan en i samarbeid med publikum kan utvikle inkluderende læringsmiljøer rundt kunstverk og visuelle kilder som uttrykker seksualitet. Assolent har en mastergrad i kuratering fra Sorbonne-universitetet og en mastergrad i moderne filosofi fra Nanterreuniversitetet, begge i Paris. For tiden er hun en del av senteret for doktorgradstudier i feminisme, seksualpolitikk og visuell kultur ved Loughboroughuniversitetet i England. Hun har jobbet på flere franske kunstinstitusjoner, for eksempel 49 Nord 6 Est – FRAC Lorraine, Galerie des Galeries (Galeries Lafayette) og Palais de Tokyo.

Mikaela Assolent (1985, France) is an art educator whose research centres on how feminist strategies can be used to question power structures in exhibition spaces and how inclusive learning environments can be developed with audiences around artworks depicting sexuality. She has worked at 49 Nord 6 Est - FRAC Lorraine, the Galerie des Galeries (Galeries Lafayette), Palais de Tokyo, and other art institutions in France. She holds a professional MA in curating (Paris IV- Sorbonne University), an MA in contemporary philosophy (Paris X University), and is currently part of the Feminism, Sexual Politics, and Visual Culture Centre for Doctoral Training at Loughborough University (UK).

Husker du verden før GPS? For få år siden gikk vi fremdeles rundt med papirkart i hånda, mens vi snudde oss rundt og så etter holdepunkter i bybildet eller landskapet. Målet var å få kart og terreng til å henge i hop, slik at vi skulle klare å finne fram. En morsom bieffekt av dette var at vi ofte gikk oss bort. Ved rene uhell kom vi utenfor turistløypene og snublet over ting vi aldri så etter i utgangspunktet. I dag sier smarttelefonen hvor vi er til enhver tid, og restauranter, barer, butikker og museer markeres automatisk på kartet. Ved et klikk på skjermen kan vi se om sjappa er anbefalt av andre eller ikke. Benjamin Bardinets prosjekt for biennalen er et angrep på dette. Han bekymrer seg over at viktige sider ved magien til kunst i det offentlige rommet blir borte når alle har kartlagt terrenget på forhånd. Bardinets bidrag til biennalen er derfor et kart som gjør at vi skal kunne gå oss bort, et kart med sitater, fakta og rykter relatert til de utstilte verkene; et kart som åpner nye veier, omveier eller blindveier.

Do you remember the world before GPS? Just a few years ago we still went around with paper maps in our hands looking for points of reference in the urban scene or landscape. The aim was to get the map and the terrain to make sense together, so we could manage to find our way forward. An amusing effect of this was that we often lost our way. By pure bad luck we ended up outside the tourist itineraries and stumbled into things we had never looked for to start with. Today the smartphone tells us where we are at any time, and restaurants, bars, shops and museums are automatically marked on the map. By clicking on the screen we can see whether the shop is recommended by others or not. Benjamin Bardinet’s project for the biennial is an assault on this. He is worried that important aspects of the magic of art in public space are lost when everyone has mapped the terrain in advance. Bardinet’s contribution to the biennial is therefore a map in which we can get lost, a map with quotations, facts and rumours related to the exhibited works, a map that opens up new paths, detours or dead ends.

Mens Benjamin Bardinet (1977, Frankrike) jobbet som utstillingsguide på CAPC-museet i Bordeaux i 2001, forlot han sin opprinnelige ambisjon om å bli foreleser og akademiker. To år senere ble han sjef for formidlingsavdelingen på Palais de Tokyo i Paris.

Her bidro han til å formulere kunstinstitusjonens «laboratorie»-tilnærming gjennom ulike former for samarbeid med skoler, universiteter og lærlinger, og inviterte til refleksjoner rundt hva som står på spill i formidlingen av samtidskunst. Etter et opphold på Jeu de Paume i Paris fra 2013 til 2017, har han nå base i Grenoble. Der underviser han i et masterprogram i urban design på den grafiske designskolen. I tillegg skriver han utstillingskronikker for det ukentlige kulturmagasinet Le Petit Bulletin.

With a Master’s degree in Visual Arts, Benjamin Bardinet (1977, France) abandoned his initial ambition to become a lecturer while working as an exhibition guide at CAPC musée d’art contemporain in Bordeaux in 2001. Two years later, he joined Palais de Tokyo where he led the department of education. Taking advantage of the Palais’ “laboratory” approach to different forms of intervention and collaboration with schools, universities and apprenticeships, he instigated reflections on what is at stake in the mediation of contemporary art. After working at Jeu de Paume in Paris between 2013 and 2017, he has since been based in Grenoble, where he teaches a Master’s programme in Urban Design at the Graphic Design School, and writes exhibition chronicles for the cultural weekly, Le Petit Bulletin.

Hender det seg at du snapper opp bruddstykker av samtaler når du beveger deg i byen? At du plutselig legger merke til noen ord fra en fremmed stemme? Noen som sier noe som ikke var ment for deg, men som får deg til å tenke? Et bruddstykke av en samtale kan snu opp ned på dagen din.

Samtidig kan du andre ganger kanskje nikke og late som om du lytter i en samtale du selv tar del i, mens du egentlig ikke helt får med deg det som blir sagt? Julien Bismuths prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN er en performance der fem utøvere blir tildelt hver sin tekst som de lærer utenat. De møter opp i Birkelunden om morgenen, før de skiller lag og beveger seg rundt i byen på egenhånd og framfører teksten sin hele dagen. De kan si den til seg selv der de går eller sitter. Kanskje sier de den i telefonen, når de bestiller seg ei pølse i kiosken, eller til personen som går ved siden av dem, som også kan hende er en utøver. På slutten av dagen møtes de utenfor Nationaltheateret og framfører teksten en siste gang. Når performancen er over, vil tekstene, på samme måte som andre samtalefragmenter, forbli i tankene til de som tilfeldigvis kom over dem.

Does it ever happen that you overhear fragments of conversation as you move around the city?

That you suddenly notice an isolated phrase spoken by a stranger? Someone saying something that wasn’t meant for you but which makes you think? A fragment of conversation can turn your day upside down. At the same time, you may sometimes nod and pretend to listen to a conversation in which you are taking part, without taking in what is being said. Julien Bismuth’s project for osloBIENNALEN is a performance in which five performers are assigned their own texts, which they learn by heart. They will meet in Birkelunden in the morning, before splitting up and moving around the city alone, performing their texts all over the city. They might utter the words to themselves as they walk or sit.

Or say them on the telephone while they are ordering a hot dog from the kiosk, or to the person walking beside them, who might also be a perfomer. They will perform their fragments of text over the course of the day. At the end of the day they meet again outside of the National Theatre and perform the text one last time.

As the performance ends, the texts, like any other fragment of conversation, will remain in the minds of those who happened to come across it.

Julien Bismuth (1973, Frankrike) er en kunstner og forfatter som bor og jobber i New York. Arbeidet hans ligger i skjæringspunktet mellom visuell kunst og litteratur. Julien Bismuth’s performance takes place in Oslo’s streets on the road between Birkelunden and the National Theatre.

BIRKELUNDEN er et parkområde sentralt i Oslo, midt i det tidligere arbeiderstrøket Grünerløkka. Birkelundparken ble anlagt i 1860-årene og er idyllisk plassert mellom Paulus kirke i vest og Grünerløkka skole i øst.

Den populære parken er på omkring 16 dekar og inneholder et fonteneanlegg og en musikkpaviljong fra 1920-årene, samt flere skulpturer og minnesmerker. Birkelunden har fått sitt navn etter de store bjørketrærne i parken og er i dag et populært sted for hele Oslos befolkning, spesielt på grunn av søndagsmarkedene som holdes i parken.

BIRKELUNDEN is a centrally located park area in Oslo, in the middle of the former workers’ neighbourhood of Grünerløkka. Birkelund Park was laid out in the 1860s and has an idyllic location between Grünerløkka School to the east and St. Paul’s Church to the west. The popular park measures 1,600 square metres and includes a fountain complex and a music pavilion dating from the 1920s, as well as several sculptures and monuments. Birkelunden (Birch Grove) takes its name from the park’s large birch trees, and is today a popular attraction for residents of Oslo because of its Sunday flea market.

NATIONALTHEATRET er en av tre nasjonale scener for teaterkunst i Norge. Bygget er tegnet av Henrik Bull og ble oppført i 1895.

Som landets hovedscene for teater har det primært, men ikke utelukkende, klassisk og moderne norsk dramatikk på programmet.

Tidlig i forrige århundre var Nationaltheateret også scene for operaoppsetninger under ledelse av komponisten Johan Halvorsen. Teateret driver i tillegg bydelsscenen Torshovteateret på Torshov.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE is one of three national venues for theatre arts in Norway, designed by Henrik Bull and built in 1895. As the country’s principal theatre it programmes mainly classical and modern Norwegian drama.

In the early years of the twentieth century, the National Theatre also staged opera under the directorship of the composer Johan Halvorsen.

In addition, the theatre has a subsidiary venue, Torshovteateret at Torshov.

Hva ligger i et blikk? Hvis noen kikker på deg, ser du tilbake – eller ser du en annen vei? Det å stå og kikke på et offentlig sted er samtidig å åpne seg selv for blikk fra andre. Å være med i en gruppe kan gi deg makt, men det gjør deg samtidig sårbar fordi du blir mer synlig.

Carole Douillards prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN handler om nettopp dette. En levende skulptur formes, der en gruppe mennesker står og ser på forbipasserende i bybildet. Der blir de stående – lenge. Hvor og når er avtalt på forhånd. De står samlet, stille, oppmerksomme, til og med kontemplative. Hvis du tar deg tid til å se tilbake, vil du kunne oppdage hvordan gruppen av seende består av individer som uttrykker sin personlige og kollektive tilstedeværelse på forskjellig måte. Å stå foran en folkemengde er noe mange ikke engang orker tanken på. Samtidig er det noe hypnotisk over det å bli kikket på. Hvis du går forbi en gruppe på gaten som tydelig kikker på deg, klarer du å se tilbake?

What’s in a look? If someone stares, you stare back, don’t you? Or do you look away?

In public space standing and looking is often synonymous with exposing yourself to being looked at. Standing together in a group might grant you power, but at the same time it makes you vulnerable because you are more visible than yourself alone. Carole Douillard’s project for osloBIENNALEN is about exactly this: a living sculpture made up of a group of people who stand still and look at passersby or a point in the urban landscape. And there they stand – for a long time. Where and when they do this is agreed in advance. They stand together, silent, attentive, contemplative even. If you take the time to look back, you might recognise the individual ways that ‘the viewers’ are enacting their personal and collective presence. To stand in front of a crowd is something not many people are comfortable with. At the same time, there is something hypnotic about looking, and being looked at profoundly. If you pass a group of people on the street who are clearly looking at you, do you look back?

Carole Douillard (1971, Frankrike) arbeider med performance, gjerne med utgangspunkt i «kroppen som skulptur». Hun produserer i tillegg tegninger, fotografier og tekst hvor hun undersøker og uttrykker mentale tilstander og mønstre knyttet til sin egen kunstneriske praksis. She is most often described as “using her body as a sculpture” and also produces representations, such as drawings and photography, which explore mental states and patterns relating to her artistic practice.

Hvor langt kan en ødelagt bil bevege seg i en bilfri by? Ed D’Souzas prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN er Migrantbilen, en skulptur der et tredimensjonalt fotografi av en kollidert bil, gjengitt i full størrelse, er spent opp rundt et rammeverk i tre, laget på et snekkerverksted i Markveien. «Bilen» blir trillet rundt til ulike steder i Oslo. Fotografiet av bilvraket er hentet fra Delhi i India, der kunstneren fant vraket forlatt. Bilmerket er en Hindustan Ambassador, bilmodellen som fra 1958 til produksjonen stoppet i 2014, var selve bilen i India – populær som taxi, statussymbol og etter hvert folkebil. Beryktet for dårlige bremser har mange av disse bilene endt opp som vrak, i et land som er viden kjent for sin frittvoksende trafikkultur. Bilisme er et globalt fenomen, men kulturene rundt varierer. I Oslo er det nå politisk flertall for et bilfritt sentrum.

Med dette forsvinner privatbilene ut av syne i sentrum. Det er mange grenser i verden som ikke kan passeres av biler, grunnet makt og politiske vedtak. Kanskje denne bilen som kommer utenfra, kan minne oss på dette?

How far can a wrecked car move in a car-free city? Ed D’Souza’s project for osloBIENNALEN is Migrant Car, a sculpture in which a threedimensional photograph of a crashed car reproduced in full size is wrapped around a wooden framework built in a joiner’s workshop at Markveien. The ‘car’ is rolled about to different places in Oslo.

The photograph of the crashed car was taken in Delhi, India, where the artist found the abandoned wreck. The car is a Hindustan Ambassador, a model in production from 1958 to 2014, which was the car in India, popular as taxi, as status symbol, in time becoming a people’s car. Notorious for its bad brakes, many of them ended up as wrecks in a country famous for the rampant growth of its traffic and car culture. Motoring is a global phenomenon, but the cultures surrounding it vary. In Oslo there is now a political majority in favor of a traffic-free centre, involving the disappearance of private cars from the city streets. There are many borders in the world that cannot be crossed by car because of power struggles and political manoeuvres. Maybe this car brought from elsewhere will remind us of this.

Migrantbilen er en samproduksjoen mellom Ed D’Souza, Møbeltapetserer Eddie King og studenter fra OsloMet-storbyuniversitetet og Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo.

Ed D’Souza (Robert E. D’Souza, 1969, Storbritannia) er en London-basert kunstner, designer og professor i Critical Practice ved Winchester School of Art ved Universitetet i Southampton. Han er kjent for sine temporære, stedspesifikke og samarbeidsbaserte kunstog designprosjekter, hvorav mange går i dialog med hans indiske opphav. D’Souzas kunstnervirke utforsker kunstneriske produksjonsprosesser og underbygges av hans forfatterskap, som omhandler sosiale, politiske og kulturelle bevegelser. Arbeidene hans har de siste årene blitt vist på en rekke kunstinstitusjoner og biennaler og i offentlige rom i Kina, India, Spania og Storbritannia.

Migrant Car is a co-production between Ed D’Souza, Eddie King’s Furniture and Upholstery workshop in Oslo, and students from Oslo Metropolitan University and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Ed D’Souza (Robert E. D’Souza, 1969, UK) is a Londonbased artist and designer. He is also Professor of Critical Practice at Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton. He is known for his temporary, site-specific and participatory/collaborative art and design projects many of which connect to his Indian heritage. His work explores critical practices that engage with a variety of production processes and producers and is supported by his critical writings around social, political and cultural change. Recent projects have been shown in art institutions, biennials and public spaces in China, India, Spain and the UK.

BILFRITT BYLIV er et program i regi av Oslo kommunes bymiljøetat, som har som mål å skape et bedre bymiljø i Oslo sentrum. Programmet skal gjøre bestemte deler av sentrum bilfrie, og på den måten gjøre byen mer tilgjengelig for fotgjengere, syklister og handikappede. En annen viktig målsetting for prosjektet er å skape møteplasser i byen og å aktivere skjulte byrom.

Programmet ønsker å opprettholde nødvendig bylogistikk og styrke kollektivtransporten, samtidig som folkeliv og ferdsel for myke trafikanter prioriteres fremfor privatbilisme.

CAR-FREE CITY LIFE is a programme run by Oslo City Council’s Urban Environment Authority, and aims at environmental improvement in the centre of Oslo. The programme sets out to make certain areas of the centre car-free, so that the city becomes more accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and the disabled. Another important target is to create meeting places in the city and to activate hidden urban spaces.

The programme intends to support necessary city logistics and to strengthen public transport, while prioritizing street life and ‘soft traffic’ over private motor transport.

Hva er egentlig en bok? Er det permen, papiret, skrifttypen, språkformen, setningene eller ordene?

Hvis vi snur litt på det, kan vi spørre oss selv om hvor boka slutter. Mette Edvardsens prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN minner oss om at en bok i høyeste grad er en sosial greie. Noen har skrevet den for oss, noen har jobbet med den i forlaget, og noen har solgt den i bokhandelen. Og du er neppe alene om å lese den. Uansett om det er en spennende krim, en serieroman fra hylla på dagligvarebutikken, en diktsamling eller en av klassikerne, så snakker vi med andre om boka.

Men hva skjer i et samfunn der bøker er forbudt?

Edvardsen er inspirert av romanen Fahrenheit 451 av Ray Bradbury fra 1953, som forteller om et samfunn der bøker blir forbudt og brent.

Tittelen spiller på at bøker brenner ved 451 grader fahrenheit. I denne romanen lærer folk seg bøkene utenat, slik at de skal kunne fortelle dem videre.

I Mette Edvardsens prosjekt går et helt bibliotek av slike levende bøker rundt, og de kan sine bøker utenat. Bøkene lever videre i hukommelsen til disse menneskene, og de vil fortelle boka si videre til deg, om du bare vil lytte. For boka er hinsides permene, hinsides papiret – ei god bok lever videre i den som har lest eller blitt lest for.

What is a book? Is it the cover, the paper, the typeface, the language type, the sentences or the words? If we turn the question around, we might ask where a book ends. Mette Edvardsen’s project for osloBIENNALEN reminds us that a book is very much a social affair. Someone has written it for you, someone else has worked on it at the publisher’s and at the bookshop; you are unlikely to be the only person to read it. Whether it’s an exciting crime thriller, a serial novel from the supermarket shelves, a poetry collection, or one of the classics, we talk to other people about the books we read. But what happens in a society where books are forbidden? Edvardsen has been inspired by the 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the story of a society where books are prohibited and burnt – books burn at 451 degrees Fahrenheit. In the novel, people learn books by heart so they can pass them on orally. In Mette Edvardsen’s project a whole library of living books have each learnt one book by heart. The books live on in these people, and each will pass his/her book on to you if you will only listen. Because a book is much more than the cover, the paper – a good book lives on in whoever reads it, or has had it read to them.

Mette Edvardsen (1970, Norge) har jobbet med og i det utøvende kunstfeltet som danser, koreograf og kunstner for en rekke kompanier. Siden 1996 har hun jobbet under eget navn. Edvardsens arbeider omfatter forestillinger, bøker, video, tekst og publikasjoner. Hun har særlig jobbet med forholdet mellom utøvende kunst som prosess og som situasjon. I 2015 ble kunstnerskapet hennes presentert gjennom et retrospektivt program på Black Box teater i Oslo. I 2010 startet hun prosjektet Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine.

Tittelen refererer til et sitat fra Ray Bradburys roman Fahrenheit 451, og prosjektet dreier seg om memorering som praksis og prosess.

The work of Mette Edvardsen (1970, Norway) encompasses the performing arts, dance and choreography. Although her work explores other media and formats, such as video, books and writing, her interest is always focused on the relationship to the performing arts as a practice and a situation. Based in Brussels since 1996, she has worked as a dancer and performer for a number of companies.

A retrospective of her work was presented at Black Box theatre in Oslo in 2015. In 2010, she initiated the project Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine, which refers to a quote from the Ray Bradbury novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953), to develop memorisation as a practice and ongoing process.

MYNTGATA-KVARTALET. BIENNALENS HOVEDKVARTER Myntgata 2 er hovedkvarter for osloBIENNALEN, men inneholder også over seksti atelierer fordelt på fem etasjer. Bygningen befinner seg i et stort rektangulært gårdsrom i hjertet av det historiske Oslo. Kvartalet ligger i utkanten av «Kvadraturen», det rettlinjede gatenettet som var bysentrum for Oslo (da Christiania) fra begynnelsen av 1600-tallet til midten av 1800-tallet.

MYNTGATA NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE BIENNIAL In addition to the headquarters of osloBIENNALEN, Myntgata 2 also houses over sixty studios spread over five floors. The building forms one side of a large rectangular courtyard in the heart of historic Oslo. At one time, the neighbourhood lay on the edge of the “Quadrature,” the rectilinear street network that comprised Oslo’s city centre (then called Christiania) from the beginning of the 1600s until the mid-1800s.

Hypp på å henge litt i trafikkmaskinen på Økern?

Ikke det, nei. Da skal jeg fortelle deg noe som kanskje gir deg lyst til å dra dit likevel. Oslo Samlede Verk OSV. har satt opp en egen skulpturpaviljong på Økern, og i løpet av våren og høsten fyller de på med skulpturer hentet fra offentlige kunstsamlinger, slik som Oslo kommunes egen samling. I første omgang viser de en mengde skulpturer av dyr. Deretter vil utstillingen gradvis vokse, gjennom at skulpturer med andre fellestrekk settes inn i paviljongen.

Slik blir trafikkområdet på Økern fullt av skulpturer. Ideen er å stille spørsmål ved hva som skjer med kunst som inngår i samlinger, som de offentlige samlingene OSV. låner fra.

Er det slik at et verk står seg godt alene når det kommer fra en samling, eller vil det alltid forbli en liten del av samlingen? Kanskje har alle verk en samling i seg, noe større som man ikke kan befri dem fra. Hva er det som skjuler seg i verkene som OSV. presenterer?

Oslo Collected Works OSV. has set up its own sculpture pavilion at Økern, and in the course of the spring and autumn they will fill it with sculptures taken from public art collections, including the Oslo City Council art collection.

At first they will be showing sculptures of animals. Then the exhibition will gradually grow as sculptures with other shared features are set up in the pavilion. So the traffic-bound area at Økern will be filled with sculptures. The idea is to question what happens to art that is included in collections like the public ones OSV. borrows from. When a work comes from a collection, does it then stand alone, or will it always remain a small part of the collection?

Perhaps all works have a collection within them, something bigger from which they cannot be released? What is it that hides inside the works that Oslo Collected Works OSV. presents? We will see the answer at Økern – of all places. (In Norwegian, Osv. stands for etc., which comes from the Latin Et cetera, meaning, “and the other [absent] things.”)

Jan Freuchen (1979, Norge) er en billedkunstner som arbeider med skulpturer, collager, publikasjoner og kuratoriske prosjekter. I 2006 grunnla han kunstbokforlaget Lord Jim Publishing, som drives fra hans hjemby Kristiansand.

Jan Freuchen (1979, Norway) is a visual artist who works with sculpture, collage, publications and curatorial projects. In 2006, he founded the artist book publishing company, Lord Jim Publishing, which he now runs from his hometown, Kristiansand, Norway.

Jonas Høgli Major (1983, Norge) er en arkitekt som arbeider med bygninger, tegninger og installasjoner.

Hans hittil nyeste arbeid var til utstillingen Game of Life IV: Prospektkabinettet i Kristiansand Kunsthall (2019), hvor han bidro med fire store installasjoner.

Jonas Høgli Major (1983, Norway) is an architect based in Arendal. Recent works include a series of installations for the exhibition Game of Life IV: Prospektkabinettet at Kristiansand Kunsthall (2019), where he contributed four large-scale installations.

Sigurd Tenningen (1982, Norge) er en forfatter og kritiker med base i Kristiansand. Tenningen skriver primært noveller og essay, og han har blant annet utgitt essaysamlingen Vegetasjonens triumf er total (2015). Sammen med Jan Freuchen står han bak utstillings- og publikasjonsserien Game of Life (2012–2020) ved Kristiansand Kunsthall.

Sigurd Tenningen (1982, Norway) is an author based in Kristiansand. Among recent publications is the essay collection, Vegetasjonenstriumfer total (The Triumph of Vegetation is Total, 2015). Together, Freuchen and Tenningen are co-curators and co-editors of the publication and exhibition series, Game of Life at Kristiansand Kunsthall (2012–2020).

ØKERN er et travelt trafikknutepunkt og boligog industriområde nordøst i Oslo, med Økernsenteret som sentrum. Med sine 18 etasjer er høyblokka på Økernsenteret et landemerke i Groruddalen. Blokka er en av de høyeste bygningene i landet. Senteret åpnet i 1969 på toppen av den da nyetablerte Økern T-banestasjon. Flere sentrale bedrifter har holdt til på Økern, for eksempel Standard Telefon og Kabelfabrikk, som i 1972 hadde over 4000 ansatte, og Gartnerhallen. Industrien er nå mer eller mindre forsvunnet, og de første spadetakene er tatt for å skape det nye Økern sentrum, med et enormt handelssenter, mange nye boliger, kulturliv og kontorer.

ØKERN lies on a busy junction, a residential and industrial area in the north east of Oslo, with the Økern Centre at its focal point. With its 18 floors, the Centre’s high-rise building is a landmark in Groruddalen, and is one of the tallest buildings in the country. The Centre opened in 1969 over the newly established Økern Metro Station. Several major companies have been based at Økern, such as the Standard Telephone and Cable Factory with over 4,000 employees in 1972, and the market garden firm Gartnerhallen. Industry has now more or less disappeared from the area, and work has just begun to create a new Økern Centre, with a huge trading centre, many new homes, cultural facilities and offices.

Hva skjer når noe males i en nøytral grå eller hvit farge? Gaylen Gerbers kunstnerskap dreier seg mye om valører. Hans langvarige prosjekt Supports, som han fortsetter med under biennalen, innebærer kort fortalt at han velger ut objekter som han maler. En eldre gjenstands ytre er gjennomsyret av historie, tradisjon og minner. Ved å male den grå eller hvit tilsløres disse kvalitetene sammen med gjenstandens karakteristiske overflater. Samtidig blir de ytre formene blir tydeligere slik at gjenstandens historiske bakgrunn kommer fram enda tydeligere.

Gjenstandene han finner, blir ikke bare opphøyet til kunst. Overmalingen gjør at vi faktisk ser dem på en helt annen måte enn før. Under osloBIENNALEN skal Gerber vise et utvalg Supports i Edvard Munchs gamle atelier på Ekely og i Myntgatakvartalet i Oslo sentrum.

What happens when something is painted a neutral color like grey or white? Gaylen Gerber’s oeuvre is very much about value. In brief, his long-term project entitled Supports, which will be ongoing during the biennial, involves identifying objects and painting them. The surface of an old object is imbued with history, tradition and memories. Painting it grey or white instantly obscures these qualities and the existing surface’s distinctive identification only to ensure that its history, including its form re-emerge more clearly. These found objects are not only elevated to the status of art; overpainting them means that we see them in a different way from before.

During osloBIENNALEN, Gerber will show a selection of Supports in Edvard Munch’s studio at Ekely and in the Myntgata neighbourhood in Oslo city centre.

Ved å plassere dem i forgrunnen eller tilsynelatende dekke dem til skaper Gerber ekspressive, ofte avslørende sammensmeltninger av eget og andres arbeid. Denne praksisen er spesielt påfallende i hans pågående serie Supports, hvor publikum møter gjenstander og former som er umiddelbart og historisk meningsbærende. Gerber opprettholder en kontinuerlig spenning ved stadig å fornye relasjonen mellom det som presenteres, og hvordan det presenteres.

Gaylen Gerber (1955, USA) creates expressive, often revealing artworks and situations that incorporate the work of other makers, sometimes by foregrounding them and other times by seemingly obscuring them. For several years, Gerber’s practice has been characterised by a fusion of his own work with that of another, making them inseparable but equally present. This remains palpable in Supports, where the viewer encounters forms that carry immediate as well as pre-existing meanings simultaneously. Gerber maintains an ongoing tension by constantly renewing the relation between what is presented and how it is presented.

«TYSKERBRAKKA», MYNTGATAKVARTALET Den historiske trebygningen som på folkemunne går under navnet «tyskerbrakka», fikk sin nåværende plassering i Myntgata-kvartalet i 1949. Den ble bygget som et militært brakkebygg av den tyske okkupasjonsmakten under andre verdenskrig, men sto da på et annet sted på festningsområdet. Senere skal bygget ha fungert som hovedkvarter for en av den norske etterretningstjenestens seksjonsgrupper, sannsynligvis gruppen E14, «Seksjon for spesiell innhenting».

EDVARD MUNCHS VINTERATELIER, EKELY Eiendommen Ekely, nær Skøyen i Oslo, ble kjøpt av Edvard Munch i 1916. Flere av bygningene på tomten hadde tidligere fungert som planteskole/ gartneri. Munch bodde og arbeidet på Ekely fra 1916 og fram til sin død i 1944. Munch satte opp en atelierbygning bestående av et nordvendt og et sørvendt atelier, supplert av to frilufts-atelierer. Munch selv bodde i en nå revet sveitservilla fra 1870-tallet, omkranset av en frukthage. Munch malte flere av sine viktigste verk her, og tiden på Ekely anses som en særlig produktiv periode i hans liv.

“TYSKERBRAKKA” (THE GERMAN BARRACKS), MYNTGATA NEIGHBOURHOOD The historic wooden building, which was known popularly as “Tyskerbrakka” (The German Barracks), was given its present site in the Myntgata neighbourhood in 1949. The building, constructed as a military barracks by the Germans during the Occupation, was used during World War II but at that time it was located in another part of the old fortress area. Later the building was moved to its current location and is said to have functioned as the headquarters for one of the sections of the Norwegian Intelligence Service, probably the E14 group (the “Section for Special Procurement”).

EDVARD MUNCH’S WINTER STUDIO, EKELY The property Ekely, near Skøyen in Oslo, was bought by the painter Edvard Munch in 1916.

Several of the buildings on the site had functioned previously as a plant nursery/market. Munch lived and worked at Ekely from 1916 until his death in 1944. Munch constructed the studio building comprised of a northern and a southern studio, supplemented by two open-air studios. Munch himself lived in a now demolished Swiss-style villa next to the studios which dated from the 1870s, and was surrounded by an orchard. He painted several of his most important works here and his time at Ekely is considered a particularly productive period of his life.

Sier du Oslo eller Oschlo? Banan eller bannan?

Er banen til Sognsvann en T-bane eller en trikk?

Før gikk skillet i språket i Oslo mellom øst og vest. Det var tydelig ulikt tonefall og ulik uttale på hver side av Akerselva. I dag er byen en moderne og flerspråklig by, med et mangfold av måter å snakke på. Hlynur Hallssons prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN minner oss om dette.

Verkene hans er en serie veggmalerier der hvert maleri består av tekst med tre forskjellige utsagn om samme tema. Men selv om temaet er gjennomgående på hvert veggmaleri, har utsagnene forskjellig bakgrunn og vinkling. Det samme verket omtaler ett tema på tre ulike måter og på tre ulike språk. Hallsson skifter mellom å bruke polsk, litauisk, nordsamisk, norsk, engelsk, svensk, somali og islandsk. Utenom islandsk, som er hans eget, er dette språk som er vanlige i Oslo i dag. Men det er få av oss som snakker flere av disse språkene. Derfor vil alltid en del av budskapet på veggen være uforståelig for de fleste av oss. Kanskje det er slik det er å bo og bevege seg i det moderne Oslo?

Hlynur Hallsson (1968, Island) bor og arbeider i Akureyri på Island, og i Berlin. Språk og kommunikasjon spiller en viktig rolle i hans praksis som kunstner og kurator, hvor han jobber med installasjoner, fotografier og tekst.

Gjennom konseptuell og målbevisst flerspråklighet synliggjør Hallsson de semantiske utfordringene i kommunikasjonen av kunstverk – deres kulturelle forutsetninger og mangfoldige muligheter for tolkning.

Han har stilt ut og vært kurator for en rekke prosjekter, blant annet i Kunstraum München, på Reykjavík kunstmuseum og Living Art Museum i Reykjavík, på Chinati Foundation i Texas og i Overgaden i København.

Do you pronounce it ‘Oslo’ or ‘Oshlo’? Is the metro to Sognsvann a T-bane or a trikk? At one time, Oslo dialects marked a dividing line between east and west, with clear differences in accent and pronunciation on either side of Akerselva.

Today, Oslo is a modern, multilingual city with a wealth of languages and ways of talking. Hlynur Hallsson’s project for osloBIENNALEN reminds us of this. His works are a series of murals each consisting of text, three different statements on the same theme. Although the theme recurs in each mural, the statements are drawn from different contexts and have slightly different nuances. So the same work speaks of a theme in three different ways, and in three different languages. Hallsson alternates between Polish, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Northern Sámi, English, Swedish, Somali and Icelandic. Apart from Icelandic – his own language – these are languages that are commonly spoken in Oslo today. But few of us speak more than one of them. So some messages will remain incomprehensible to most of us. Perhaps this reflects the experience of living in modern Oslo?

Hlynur Hallsson (1968, Iceland) lives and works in Iceland and Germany. Language and communication play essential roles in his practice as an artist and curator, and in his work, which moves across mediums, from installation to photography. Through conceptual and purposeful multilingualism, Hallsson explores the semantic difficulties of communication surrounding a work of art and the cultural preconditions of, and multifarious opportunities for, interpretation. He has exhibited and completed curatorial work at Kunstraum München, Reykjavík Art Museum, The Living Art Museum, Reykjavík, Chinati Foundation, Locker Plant, Marfa, Texas, Overgaden, Copenhagen.

Hvordan kan en flere hundre år gammel gipsav-støpning av en to tusen år gammel skulptur snakke til oss i dag? Gipskopier av eldgamle greske og romerske skulpturer har lagt grunnlaget for mye av kunsthistorien.

Kunstnere i den vestlige tradisjonen har helt fram til moderne tid lært seg å tegne og forme etter slike modeller. Da Nasjonalgalleriet ble bygget, skulle midtbygningen romme en samling av slike klassiske gipsavstøpninger.

Når Marianne Heier gjør sin performance blant gipskopiene på kunstakademiet i Milano, der hun selv har studert, og senere i det tomme banklokalet der Museet for samtidskunst inntil nylig holdt til – påpeker hun den potensielle makten i disse figurene. De er arketyper vi stadig refererer til, også uten å være klar over det. Heiers performance har form av en museumsomvisning der hun selv, i rollen som guide, leser gipsskulpturene inn i en større historie. Hun bruker tekster hentet fra klassisk mytologi og politiske motstandsbevegelser, for å vise det potensielt radikale i skulpturene.

Skulpturenes mytologi er fylt med maktkritikk, kjønnsproblematikk og identitetspolitikk som kan inspirere til et nødvendig sivilt mot i vår tids politiske klima. Performancen er med-kuratert av osloBIENNALEN kuratorer og Alessandra Pioselli og produseres i samarbeid med studenter og ansatte ved Prosjektskolen i Oslo.

How can a centuries-old plaster cast of a twothousand-year-old sculpture speak to us today?

Plaster copies of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures have formed the basis for much of the history of art. Right up until modern times, artists in the western tradition learned to draw and shape works from such models. When the National Gallery was built, the central building housed a collection of these classical plaster casts. Marianne Heier has chosen to make a performance among the plaster copies at the Academy of Art in Milan where she herself studied and later in the empty bank premises which until recently housed the Museum of Contemporary Art – drawing attention to the potential power in these figures. They are archetypes that we still refer to, although we are often unaware of this. Heier’s performance takes the form of a museum guided tour in which she takes the role of guide, situating the plaster sculptures in wider histories. Using texts taken from classical mythology and political resistance movements, she shows the potentially radical possibilities of the sculptures. The mythology from which these classical figures are taken is full of critiques of power, gender issues and identity politics that perhaps suggest a need for civil courage in the political climate of our own times. The performance is co-curated by osloBIENNALEN curators and Alessandra Pioselli and is produced in collaboration with students and employees at the Project School in Oslo.

Arbeidet hennes forstås ofte som del av en institusjonskritisk tradisjon, men Heier arbeider snarere ut fra et personlig engasjement, motivert av hennes egen levde erfaring, enn ut fra en kalkulert, strategisk praksis. Spørsmål knyttet til økonomi og verdisirkulasjon er sentrale i hele Heiers kunstnerskap, med gavens iboende makt som et tilbakevendende tema. Hun stiller spørsmål ved det «åpenbare» og inviterer til andre tolkninger og muligheter. Arbeidene hennes presenteres både som forestillinger, installasjoner, tekster og i andre former.

Marianne Heier (1969, Norway) is an artist educated and based in Milan and Oslo. Her work is often connected to the tradition of institutional critique, but emerges out of personal engagement and lived experience, rather than a strategic, calculated practice. Issues related to economics and value circulation are central to the whole of Heier’s practice, which questions the obvious and invites other interpretations and possibilities. The result is presented as performances, installations, text-based and other types of spatial intervention.

TIDLIGERE MUSEET FOR SAMTIDSKUNST Den monumentale bygningen på Bankplassen 4 ble opprinnelig oppført som hovedsete for den norske sentralbanken Norges Bank i 1907. I perioden 1990-2017 huset bygningen Museet for samtidskunst, som inneholdt Nasjonalmuseets samlinger av kunst fra etter 1945, og som presenterte vekslende utstillinger med samtidskunst. Museet for samtidskunst stengte sine dører i september 2017, da samlingen skal flyttes over til det nye Nasjonalmuseet som åpner i 2020. I dag forvaltes bygningen av den statseide eiendomsforvalteren Statsbygg, og den leies ut til ulike arrangementer og aktører.

Det er ikke avklart hva bygningen skal brukes til i fremtiden.

THE FORMER MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART The monumental building at Bankplassen 4 was originally built as the headquarters of the Norwegian central bank Norges Bank in 1907.

During the period 1990–2017, the building housed the Museum of Contemporary Art, which held the National Museum’s collections of post-1945 art, and programmed changing exhibitions of contemporary art. The Museum closed its doors in September 2017, as the collection is to be moved to the new National Museum scheduled to open in 2020. Today, the building is managed by the state-owned property management company Statsbygg and is let out for various events. It is not yet clear what use the building will be given in the future.

Har du noen gang besøkt et kontor og blitt litt usikker på hvem som egentlig jobber der? Slik kan det også være i store kunstarrangementer.

I kunstverdenen er det vanlig at folk betjener flere roller til enhver tid. En direktør ved et kunstsenter stiller kanskje ut som kunstner i et annet senter. På et annet sted jobber kanskje en kunstner som innleid dokumentarfotograf. En som er omviser på det ene stedet, kan samtidig være besøkende på et annet. Michelangelo Miccolis’ rolle under biennalen er å være gjest, men samtidig skal han også spille ulike roller innad i biennalen. Han skal opptre som ansatt, der han på vegne av publikum skal komme med innspill til kunstnerne og de ansatte om hvordan kunsten oppleves. Han skal flyte og skli mellom ulike roller. En av dem vil være å holde workshops for publikum, en annen er å skrive tekster til bruk internt i biennalen. Han skal sikre at biennalen blir vellykket, gjennom å gi sideblikk og kommentarer. Når du stikker innom et av osloBIENNALENs arrangementer, er sjansen stor for at Miccolis jobber der, men det er ikke sikkert at du vil legge merke til ham.

Have you ever visited an office and been a little uncertain about who actually works there? It can also be like this with major art events. In the art world it is normal for people to function in several roles at any given time. A director of an art centre may be exhibiting as an artist at a different centre. At another place an artist may work as a hired documentary photographer.

A guide in one place may at the same time be a visitor in another place. Michelangelo Miccolis’ role during the biennial is to be a guest, but at the same time he is to play other roles within the biennial. He is to appear as an employee who, on behalf of the public, must come up with suggestions to the artists and employees about how art is experienced. He has to drift and slip between different roles. One of them will be to hold workshops for the public, another will be to write texts for internal use by the biennial.

He must ensure that the biennial is working well by offering sidelong glances and comments.

When you drop in on one of osloBIENNALEN’s events there is a good chance that Miccolis will be working there, but it isn’t certain that you will see him in passing.

Michelangelo Miccolis (1981, Mexico) er en utøvende kunstner og visuell kunstprodusent. Siden 2017 har han vært ansvarlig programmerer for IMMATERIAL, performance-programmet til Material Art Fair i Mexico by. Like lenge har han vært konsulent for Cabaret Voltaire i Zürich. Han er for tiden aktuell med prosjektene The Army of Love i samarbeid med Ingo Niermann og Dora García, OFFSHORE i samarbeid med Cally Spooner og It Takes All The Fucking Time på Cabaret Voltaire i Zürich. Siden 2005 har Miccolis samarbeidet med en rekke internasjonale kunstnere og institusjoner, blant annet Tino Sehgal, Dora García, Carlos Amorales, Cally Spooner, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Romeo Castellucci / Sociétas Raffaello Sanzio, Veneziabiennalen, Fondazione Trussardi, Tate Modern, Palais de Tokyo, Museo Reina Sofía, Iuav-universitetet i Venezia og Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.

Michelangelo Miccolis (1981, Mexico) is a visual arts performer and producer. Michelangelo Miccolis will take part in the production and public outreach of a selection of works until October 2019. With a background in performance and production in various public spaces and spheres, Miccolis will give advice to the biennial and the artists on how to maximise access to osloBIENNALEN.

Hvem bestemmer hvilke fortellinger som blir tatt vare på for ettertida? Biblioteket nær deg er fullt av bøker med fortellinger, men kanskje med få som handler om et liv som ligner ditt eget. I sitt ettårige prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN samler Mônica Nador og Bruno Oliveira inn fortellinger som dine. De kaller prosjektet for En annen grammatikk for Oslo. Det er ikke grammatikk i betydningen verbbøyning eller kommaregler de tenker på, men språket i seg selv. Gjennom en serie workshops på Deichmanfilialene Holmlia, Bjerke og Grünerløkka vil Nador og Oliveira gi Oslo-boere muligheten til å formidle sine fortellinger på hver sin måte gjennom papir- og tekstiltrykk. Kunstnerne vil forme dette til bøker og lappetepper med tekst og motiver. Til slutt vil alle fortellingene forme en stor installasjon utenfor osloBIENNALENs hovedkvarter i Myntgata 2. Who decides which narratives will be preserved for posterity? Your local library is full of books and stories, but perhaps very few of them are about a life that resembles your own. In their one-year project for osloBIENNALEN, Mônica Nador and Bruno Oliveira are collecting stories like yours. They call the project Another grammar for Oslo. This does not refer to grammar in the sense of verb conjugations or rules about the use of commas, but to language itself. In a series of workshops at several branches of Deichmann public library, Holmlia, Bjerke and Grünerløkka, Nador and Oliveira will give Oslo-dwellers the opportunity to pass on their narratives, each in their own way, through paper and textile prints.

The artists will create books and patchwork quilts with texts and motifs from these. Finally, all the narratives will be brought together in a large installation outside the headquarters of osloBIENNALEN at Myntgata 2 as a distinctive, colourful new library of Oslo stories – perhaps with your story included? What language will you use to tell your story?

Mônica Nador (1955, Brazil) is a visual artist whose earliest works date from the 1980s. In 2003, Nador founded Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (JAMAC), a community centre that promotes lectures, workshops, activities and exhibitions among local residents to encourage the development of both cultural and political awareness in São Paulo’s Jardim Miriam district, where Nador lives and works.

Bruno Oliveira (1987, Brasil) er en billedkunstner og akademiker som er koordinator for Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (JAMAC) sammen med Mônica Nador og Thais Scabio. Han er medlem av forskningsgruppen MALOCA (for tverrfaglige studier i urbanisme og arkitektur i sør) og koordinator for kultur- og samfunnshuset Casa 1 (São Paulo i Brasil), som tilbyr husly for hjemløse LGBTQ-personer.

Bruno Oliveira (1987, Brazil) is a visual artist and educator. Alongside Mônica Nador and Thais Scabio, he is a coordinator at Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (JAMAC). He is a researcher at MALOCA (Group of Multidisciplinary Studies in Urbanisms and Architectures of the South) and the coordinator of the cultural centre Casa 1 (São Paulo/Brazil), which offers shelter to LGBT people expelled from their homes.

Deichman er Oslos offentlige bibliotek. Hovedbiblioteket befinner seg på Hammersborg, i sentrum av Oslo. I tillegg finnes det 22 filialer spredt over hele byen, fra Røa i vest og Holmlia i sør til Tøyen, Stovner og Nydalen i nord og øst. Bibliotekets filialer speiler befolkningen i byen og har ulike satsingsområder basert på bibliotekets plassering og brukernes behov. En av avdelingene befinner seg for eksempel på Rikshospitalet vest i Oslo, mens en annen befinner seg innenfor murene ved Bredtveit fengsel og forvaringsanstalt på Kalbakken i Groruddalen. Andre avdelinger har satsinger som leksehjelp og språkkafé, eller de kan tilby verktøyutleie, datahjelp til foredrag, teaterlesninger, strikkeklubb, litteraturopplesninger, boklanseringer og mye annet. Mange av filialene har utvidede åpningstider for registrerte brukere både før og etter sine vanlige åpningstider.

The Deichman is Oslo’s public library. The Central Library is at Hammersborg in the centre of Oslo.

In addition, there are 22 branches spread all over the city from Røa in the west and Holmlia in the south to Tøyen, Stovner and Nydalen in the north and east. The branches reflect the city’s population, each with a different focus based on the library’s location and the particular needs of local users. For example, one of the branches is at the University Hospital Rikshospitalet in the west of Oslo, while another is inside the walls of Bredtveit Prison and Detention Centre at Kalbakken in Groruddalen. Other branches focus on homework, coaching, a language café, or offer equipment rental, provide data assistance for lectures, hold play readings, knitting clubs, book readings, book launches and so on. Many of the branches have special opening hours for registered users extending both before and after normal opening hours.

Hva står på spill når historien blir skrevet? De mest avgjørende øyeblikkene i et lands historie skjer ofte i løpet av noen få minutter, mellom noen få personer. De foregår i små rom, utenfor offentlige institusjoner og uavhengig av betydningsfulle offentlige taler på offentlige plasser. Rose Hammer er en kollektiv kunstnerpersona som setter søkelyset mot denne typen mønstre, spesielt de som har formet hva Norge er i dag og hva det vil være i en mulig fremtid.

Under osloBIENNALEN vil Rose Hammer gjennomføre en serie forestillinger – under tittelen Nasjonale episoder – i den brechtianske lærestykketradisjonen. Serien vil se nærmere på noen mindre, men avgjørende episoder i norsk historie, for eksempel de mytiske møtene som foregikk i brakke 12 i Grini fangeleir i det naziokkuperte Norge. Det er et historisk faktum at uformelle nettverk mellom politiske fanger under andre verdenskrig formet Norge slik det er i dag. Tittelen på denne første utgaven er derfor Nasjonale episoder: Grini og Norges mulige framtid.

Etter Grini-fortellingen Rose Hammer bevege seg videre til andre mytiske og historiske hendelser.

What is at stake when history is written? The most defining moments in a nation’s history often unfold in a few minutes, are decided by a handful of people, behind closed doors, removed from public institutions or momentous historic speeches in public arenas. Rose Hammer is a collective artistic persona who has set out to draw attention to this phenomenon, specifically those key moments that have shaped the Norway of today and its possible futures. For osloBIENNALEN Rose Hammer will produce a series of performances – entitled National Episodes – in the Brechtian Lehrstücke (lesson play) tradition. These will revisit low-key but transcendent episodes in Norwegian history, such as the mythical meetings that took place at Grini prison camp Barrack 12 during the Nazi occupation of Norway. It is a historical fact that networks of political prisoners during the WWII shaped what Norway has become today. Hence the title of this first National Episode: Grini and the Futures of Norway. After the Grini narrative, Rose Hammer will move on to other episodes, both mythical and historic.

Rose Hammer består for øyeblikket av Emil Andersson, Ole-Petter Arneberg, Emilie Birkeland, Alma Braun, Victoria Durnak, Dora García, Élise Guerrier, Mattias Hellberg, Sara Hermansson, Nora Joung, Morten Langeland, Per-Oskar Leu, Alessandro Marchi, Niels Munk Plum, Arely Amaut Gómez Sánchez, Sahar Seyedian, Evelin Sillén, Kim Svensson, Qi Tan og Stacey de Voe. Kollektivet samarbeider også med den grafiske designeren Alex Gifreu og regissør Samir Kandil. Navnet «Rose Hammer» kan, men ikke utelukkende, referere til: a) hammeren på Henrik Ibsens gravmonument i Oslo, b) det tidligere emblemet til den norske arbeiderbevegelsen, c) det berømte sitatet tilegnet dramaturg Bertolt Brecht: «Kunst er ikke et speil som reflekterer virkeligheten, men en hammer som skal forme den» eller d) rosesymbolet som ble populært blant sosialistiske og sosialdemokratiske politiske partier i Vest-Europa etter andre verdenskrig.

Rose Hammer is an artistic persona consisting of a group of individuals. Evolving and changing, Rose Hammer includes, in no particular order: Kim Svensson, Emilie Birkeland, Élise Guerrier, Alma Braun, Mattias Hellberg, Niels Munk Plum, Arely Amaut Gómez Sánchez, Evelin Sillén, Emil Andersson, Alessandro Marchi, Stacey de Voe, Nora Joung, Victoria Durnak, Morten Langeland, Sara Hermansson, Sahar Seyedian, Qi Tan, Ole-Petter Arneberg, Per-Oskar Leu and Dora García, and also includes the generous and gifted collaboration of graphic designer Alex Gifreu and theatre expert Samir Kandil. Although not exclusively, the name “Rose Hammer” may refer to: a) the hammer inscribed on Henrik Ibsen’s grave monument in Oslo; b) the former emblem of the Norwegian labour movement; c) the famous quote attributed to Brecht: “Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it”; d) the rose symbol which became popular among socialist and social democratic political parties in post-World War II Western Europe.

PÅFUGLEN PERLEN, HAMMERSBORGGATA 19 Selskapslokalet Påfuglen Perlen ligger i det som tidligere var den gamle festsalen til «Bygningsarbeidernes hus» i Hammersborggata 19/21. Bygget fra 1938, som ellers fungerer som forretningsbygg, var under andre verdenskrig hovedkvarteret til det norske statspolitiet (Stapo).

Stapo var underlagt det tyske sikkerhetspolitiet Sicherheitspolizei, som også hadde Gestapo og Kripo under seg. Under okkupasjonen ble Stapos hovedkvarter i Bygningsarbeidernes hus utsatt for et spekta-kulært attentat av den norske kommunistiske sabotasjeorganisasjonen Osvald-gruppen, som hadde sterke bånd til den sovjetiske etterretningsorganisasjonen NKVD.

PÅFUGLEN PERLEN, HAMMERSBORGGATA 19 The reception rooms Påfuglen Perlen (Peacock Pearl) are in what was once the old banqueting hall of the “Construction Workers’ House” at Hammersborggata 19/21. The building opened in 1938 and now functions as commercial premises.

During the Second World War, it became the headquarters of the Norwegian State Police (“Stapo”). The Stapo operated under the German Sicherheitspolizei (security police), also in charge of the Gestapo and Kripo (criminal police). During the Occupation, the Stapo’s headquarters in the Construction Workers’ House was the target of a spectacular attack by the Norwegian Communist sabotage organization the Osvald Group, which had strong ties with the Soviet intelligence organization NKVD.

Husker du hvor magisk et butikkbesøk kunne være som barn? Alle disse tingene du enda ikke forstod bruken av, som fylte hyllene. Ansatte du ikke kjente, det ukjente språket rundt gjenstandene som ble solgt. Fremmede lukter, fremmede lyder. Etter hvert som vi ble voksne, og besøkene i butikken ble mer rutinepregede, lærte vi å effektivt finne fram det vi trenger, og å avstå fra det ufornuftige. Spesialbutikkene ble til noe vi kun oppsøker ved behov. Vi ender opp med å gå de faste gatene, ofte til faste tidspunkter. Hva kan få oss til å oppsøke det andre, å lete fram igjen magien ved å gå i en by, ved å besøke andre steder? Michael Ross’ prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN heter Tre eventyr (Three Fairy Tales) og består av tre ulike verk med utforming knyttet til magi og eventyr, som han har plassert på steder i Oslo hvor du neppe har vært før. Ross’ prosjekt går ut på å lokke oss til å gå andre ruter i en by vi kjenner, for å oppsøke koselige butikker vi ellers ikke besøker.

For å se noe vi aldri før har sett. For å få en følelse av magi.

Do you remember how magical a visit to a shop could be when you were a child? Things filled the shelves that you didn’t yet understand the use of. Staff you didn’t know, the unfamiliar language spoken about the objects for sale.

Strange smells, strange sounds. And gradually, as we grew up, and the visits to the shop became more routine, we learned how to find what we were looking for quickly and efficiently and to refrain from buying things we didn’t need. Specialist shops became something we only visit when necessary. We end up walking the usual streets, at same times every day.

What makes us go looking for the other stuff?

What makes us try to recover the magic of the city, of visiting unfamiliar places? Michael Ross’s project for osloBIENNALEN is called Tre Eventyr (Three Fairy Tales), and consists of three different works relating to magic and adventure, which he has sited around Oslo, at places you have probably not seen before. Ross’s project is about tempting us to take unfamiliar routes in a city we already know, to seek out intriguing shops we wouldn’t otherwise visit.

I nesten 30 år har Michael Ross (1954, USA), som bor og arbeider i New York, skapt skulpturer i småskala der hverdagslige elementer og materialer settes sammen til en verden av antiheroiske og kompromissløse historier.

Gjennom uventede kombinasjoner av gamle maskindeler, fotografiske utklipp eller fragmenter av gjenglemte ting har Ross skapt en rekke kunstverk i subtilt samspill med forskjellige offentlige og halvoffentlige rom. I Venezia skapte han en liten, flytende skulptur av en trekant av venetiansk glass som fløt ned byens kanaler, og på gatene i Tokyo inngraverte han haikudikt som beskrev kosmisk aktivitet, på stålpeler. Ross' gåtefulle skulpturer og offentlige gester forvandler vanlige steder og ting til en mystisk og poetisk visjon.

For nearly 30 years, Michael Ross (1954, USA), who lives and works in New York, has created small-scale sculptures employing unexpected combinations of everyday elements and materials. Within the space of a few inches or even less, using bits, parts, scraps and fragments of forgotten things, his anti-heroic and uncompromised world resonates. Ross has created several works in public spaces which subtly interact with civic space. In Venice, a small buoyant sculpture containing a triangle of Venetian glass floated down a canal; on the streets of Tokyo, micro-texts composed by the artist and engraved onto steel utility poles presented haiku of celestial activity. Ross’ enigmatic sculptures and public gestures transform ordinary places and things into a mysterious and poetic vision.

URMAKERMESTER OSSUR SOLEIM, TORDENSKIOLDSGATE 7 Urmaker Ossur Soleim i Tordenskioldsgate 7 er en av de siste uavhengige urmakerne i Oslo.

Soleim er fjerde generasjon urmaker og har virket i Oslo siden 1965. Soleim startet som urmaker hos Alf Lie og steppet ofte inn for Alfs sønn Per når klokkene på slottet skulle stilles, eller når «Ibsenklokka» i Universitetets urbygning måtte stilles i forbindelse med sommertid.

NORLIS ANTIKVARIAT, UNIVERSITETSGATA 18 Norlis Antikvariat i Universitetsgata er en av Oslos eldste bruktbokhandlere. Antikvariatet har vært i kontinuerlig drift siden det ble etablert av bokhandler og forlegger Olaf Norli i 1890.

I tillegg til nye og eldre bøker inneholder det velassorterte antikvariatet også grafiske trykk, kart og manuskripter.

MYNTGATA-KVARTALET I tillegg til å være hovedkvarter for oslo BIENNALEN inneholder Myntgata 2 til sammen over seksti atelierer fordelt på fem etasjer.

Bygningen befinner seg i et stort rektangulært gårdsrom i hjertet av det historiske Oslo.

Kvartalet ligger i utkanten av «Kvadraturen», det rettlinjede gatenettet som var bysentrum for Oslo (da Christiania) fra begynnelsen av 1600-tallet til midten av 1800-tallet.

OSSUR SOLEIM WATCHMAKER, TORDENSKIOLDSGATE 7 The watch and clock maker Ossur Soleim at Tordenskioldsgate 7 is one of the last independent watchmakers in Oslo. Fourth-generation watchmaker Soleim has worked in Oslo since 1965. He started as a watchmaker with Alf Lie, and often stepped in for his son Per Lie when the bells at the castle had to be adjusted, or when the “Ibsen Bell” in the original University building needed to be set to summertime.

NORLI’S ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSHOP, UNIVERSITETSGATA 18 Norli’s Antiquarian Bookshop at Universitetsgata is one of Oslo’s oldest dealers in second-hand books, and was opened by the bookseller and publisher Olaf Norli in 1890. In addition to new and second-hand books, the bookshop’s vast and varied stock includes prints, maps and manuscripts.

MYNTGATA NEIGHBOURHOOD In addition to the headquarters of oslo BIENNALEN, Myntgata 2 also houses over sixty studios spread over five floors. The building forms one side of a large rectangular courtyard in the heart of historic Oslo. At one time, the neighbourhood lay on the edge of the “Quadrature,” the rectilinear street network that comprised Oslo’s city centre (then called Christiania) from the beginning of the 1600s until the mid-1800s.

Hvordan verdsetter vi rommene der vi er som mest private? Lisa Tans prosjekt for osloBIENNALEN innebærer å renovere de gamle og kjølige toalettene i Myntgata 2, hvor omtrent 50 kunstnere har sine studioer og hvor biennalen har sitt hovedkvarter. Tan bruker produksjonsbudsjettet for å forbedre toalettene. Hva får vi ut av denne stille gesten som ikke peker på kunsten som er laget av kunstnerne som arbeider i bygningen, men heller på det dagligdagse toalettbesøket som finner sted mens arbeidet blir utført? Tan gjør disse forbedringene for å reflektere over forbindelsene som oppstår mellom kunstnere. Gjennom historien har mange kunstnere laget verk i reaksjon på og inspirert av andre kunstnere. Dette uttrykkes i en tekst hun har skrevet og som er trykt på kort som finnes i stativer i nærheten av toalettene.

Tilkobling – og den inspirasjonen som det kan føre til, skjer ofte i løpet av et lite øyeblikk – kanskje i det du passerer en kollega i trappene på vei til toalettet. Også du er velkommen til å bruke toalettene i Myntgata 2, og sørg for å få med deg et kort på veien.67

How do we value the spaces in which our most private activities happen? Lisa Tan’s project for osloBIENNALEN involves refurbishing the old and chilly toilets at Myntgata 2, where about fifty artists have their studios and where the biennial has its headquarters. Tan is using the allocated budget to improve the toilets.

What do we make of this quiet gesture that does not point to the art that is made by the artists who work in the building but rather to the unremarkable toilet break that happens while their work is being done? Tan is making the improvement to reflect on the connections made between artists. Throughout history, artists have made works in reaction to and inspired by other artists. This is expressed in a text she has written and printed on cards that can be taken from racks near the toilets.

Connection—and the inspiration that it can lead to, often happens in an instant—perhaps passing a colleague on the stairs on the way to use the toilets. You too are welcome to use the toilets at Myntgata 2, and be sure to take a card on the way.

Lisa Tan (1973, USA) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden, where she is an artist and Professor of Fine Art at Konstfack, University of the Arts, Crafts and Design. Her practice explores the relationship between image and language in the formation of individual subjectivity. Using video, photography, text, and other gestures, her work is shaped by aspects of mundane life, friendship, and loss; and also through her intense research into different fields of study such as literary theory and ontology.

MYNTGATA-KVARTALET. BIENNALENS HOVEDKVARTER osloBIENNALENs hovedkvarter befinner seg i en forhenværende kavalerikaserne fra 1898 i Myntgata 2. Opprinnelig var Myntgata 2 en del av Akershus festnings hesteanlegg, som i tillegg inkluderte Artilleristallen og Kavalleristallen.

Da motoriserte kjøretøy ble tatt i bruk av forsvaret rundt andre verdenskrig, ble anlegget nedlagt, og på 1950-tallet ble den tidligere kavalerikasernen ombygd til kontorbygg for Forsvaret og senere Miljødepartementet. I 2017 ble kvartalet solgt til Oslo kommune. I dag huser Myntgata 2 osloBIENNALENs kontorer i første etasje, mens resten av huset består av atelierer for kunstnere.

MYNTGATA NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE BIENNIAL The headquarters of osloBIENNALEN are housed in a former cavalry barracks at Myntgata 2 dating from 1898. Originally, Myntgata 2 was part of the stable complex of Akershus Fortress, which also included the Artillery and Cavalry stables. When the armed forces began to use motorized vehicles at the time of the Second World War, the barracks fell out of use, but were rebuilt as office buildings for the Defence forces in the 1950s, later taken over by the Ministry of the Environment. In 2017, the complex was sold to Oslo City Council. Today, Myntgata 2 houses osloBIENNALEN’s offices on the first floor, while the rest of the building comprises artists’ studios.

Hva er lyden av elektrisk strøm? I Øystein Wyller Oddens prosjekt i rådhushallen vil du kunne høre ganske stillestående orgeltoner, som etteraper lyden fra et sikringsskap i rådhuset. Strøm lager lyd, og femti ganger i sekundet endrer strømmen retning, noe som gir den en dyp brummende basslyd på 50 Hz. Denne brummingen, med resonansklangene og overtonene den skaper i sikringsskapet, har kunstneren transkribert for orgel. For første gang noensinne brukes også orgelpipene i rådhushallen. Ved to anledninger i løpet av biennalen vil det arrangeres konsert i hallen, der et strykeorkester skal akkompagnere et trollstemt konsertflygel som vibrerer med frekvensen av strømnettet i sanntid. Strømmens dype tone er nemlig ikke stabil, den endrer seg i takt med forbruket og produksjonen i kraftmarkedet. Lyden av strøm er lyden av det moderne samfunnet, og den snakker godt sammen med den sosialrealistiske kunsten i rådhushallen.

What sound does electric current make? In Øystein Wyller Odden’s project you will be able to hear static organ notes that imitate the sound made by a fuse box in the City Hall.

Electricity makes a sound; fifty times a second the current changes direction, which makes a low, humming bass sound with a frequency of 50 HZ. This low hum, with the resonances and harmonics it creates in the fuse box, has been transcribed by the artist for reproduction on the organ; this is the first time the City Hall’s organ pipes have been used. Two concerts will be arranged in the Hall during the biennial, in which a string orchestra will accompany a concert grand piano tuned to vibrate at the frequency of the power grid in real time. The low hum of the current is not stable, it changes in response to the supply and demand of the energy market. The sound of the current is the sound of modern society and enters into a subtle dialogue with the social-realist art of previous eras on display in the City Hall.

Øystein Wyller Odden (1983, Norway) was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and works with installations and objects often involving sound and music. His work addresses the relationship between technology, architecture and people, and attempts to investigate and expose their underlying structures.

Wyller Odden has previously held solo exhibitions at Fotogalleriet (2011), Nordnorsk Kunstnersenter (2016), Telemark Art Center (2018) and the Artists' Association (2018), and has participated in group exhibitions at Henie Onstad Art Center, Tegnerforbundet and Akershus Art Center.

OSLO RÅDHUS er Oslo kommunes administrative og politiske hovedkvarter. Praktbygget ligger i Pipervika like ved Aker Bygge. Bygget er tegnet av Arnstein Arneberg og Magnus Poulsson, og det ble offisielt innviet i forbindelse med Oslos 900-årsjubileum i 1950. I rådhuset finner man blant annet kontorer til administrasjon, byrådets sal og en rekke kunstverk og utsmykninger integrert i bygget, i salene og på fasaden.

Kunstnerne som står bak byggets mange rike utsmykninger er blant annet Henrik Sørensen, Alf Rolfsen, Axel Revold, Per Krohg, Anne Grimdalen og Kari Grude. Rådhuset har to tårn, hvor det i det vestre tårnet finnes vederlagsfrie atelierer for kunstnere i 13. etasje. På taket av det østre tårnet er det et klokkespill med 49 klokker, tidvis manuelt bemannet av klokkenisten Laura Marie Rueslåtten. Repertoaret er alt fra klassisk til pop, rock og jazz.

OSLO CITY HALL is Oslo City Council’s administrative and political headquarters, located in Pipervika just by Aker Brygge. The magnificent building was designed by Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson, and was inaugurated to coincide with Oslo’s 900 th anniversary in 1950. The City Hall houses, among other things, administrative offices, the Council Hall and a collection of art and decorative works integrated into the building’s design, in its halls and on the facades. Artists contributing to the building’s sumptuous decorations include Henrik Sørensen, Alf Rolfsen, Axel Revold, Per Krohg, Anne Grimdalen and Kari Grude. The City Hall has two towers, the western tower housing free studios for artists on the 13th floor. On the roof of the eastern tower there is a carillon with 49 bells, operated manually at certain times by the carillon player Laura Marie Rueslåtten; her repertoire covers everything from classical to pop, rock and jazz.
