The Historic West End of Charlotte, North Carolina, which runs alongside the present Beatties Ford Road corridor, has a long history of unexplained attacks. All examples are assassination attempts on civil rights leaders, mass shootings, excessive police brutality, and gentrification.

On November 22nd, 1965, coordinated bombs attacked the homes of Frederick Alexander, Reginald Hawkins, Kelly Alexander, and Julius Chambers. Because of their substantial contributions to overthrowing some of North Carolina's and the United States of America's longstanding segregation laws. During this time, Frederick Alexander became the first Black city council member. He is notable for uniting the Pinewood and Elmwood cemeteries in downtown Charlotte. Also, he was a member of the NAACP, a trustee of Johnson C. Smith University, the Governor's Commission on Law and Order, the Charlotte Area Fund, and other organizations. On the same morning of November 22nd, 1964, on Senior Drive in Charlotte, Kelly Alexander's home was also bombed, which happened to be on the same street as Frederick Alexander's. Kelly Alexander Jr., who was 17 at the time, recalls the morning of the assault, saying, "I remember hearing what I thought was thunder in the distance, and then there was a great light, which would have been the bomb going off on our doorstep." Kelly Alexander Sr. was the president of NACCP Charlotte, NC branch; hence, the event most likely targeted him rather than Kelly Jr.

Judge Throws out Lawsuit in Charlotte Police Shooting

The Attack Continues

The Citizen's Review Board Stated, "Willful and Wanton Reckless Disregard for Franklin's Rights and safety- killing him for following her Instructions."

On March 25th, 2019, a local police officer Wendel Kerl shot Danquirs Franklin in the Burger King parking lot on Beatties Ford Rd. The local police department released bodycam footage that exposed many misguided acts from officer Kerl after the incident. Danquirs Franklin followed her orders most critically, whereas she decided to fire shots. The City of Charlotte has never reprimanded Officer Wendel Kerl, and due to the lack of accountability and transparency, his relatives filed a lawsuit against the city and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Franklin's Mother sued Wendel Kerl and the City of Charlotte in 2020, claiming excessive force and constitutional breaches. U.S district judge dismissed the case even after the findings of officer Kerl's mistakes. He stated that her mistakes were reasonable within the law.

Board chair Tonya Jameson stated, "CMPD Erred in Declaring the Franklin Shooting Justifiable."

Gentrification Gentrification of this pattern involves the fragmentation of a neighborhood by developing unaffordable homes, new roads, highways, schools, and other things. It is fastly expanding across the Historic West End district. Blacks have a long history of supporting and strengthening a significant portion of the Beatties Ford Rd corridor. Past-Present gentrification In 1966, Fred Alexander predicted the spread of gentrification. He feared that highways would destroy the community homes, schools, churches, and grocery stores. According to Roma Johnson-Durham, vice president of the Howie Acres Neighborhood Association, "Older areas need additional protection to maintain their heritage in the face of such growth."

The Historic West End Story Continues The Historic West End area has been home to some of the world's most significant black civil rights activists, both past and present. Furthermore, the community's rich background has been the foundation of its identity. Despite the neighborhood's rich heritage, attacks have unfolded in various methods, including police misconduct, displacement, bomb attacks, and mass murders. Even though the Historic West End bombing occurred in 1965, it is similar to the other stated attacks, which occurred within a 4-mile radius, including the Juneteenth Massacre and the police shooting of Franklin. Why have there been continuous unresolved attacks on this community?
