INNOVATION IS NOT JUST A BUZZWORD, BUT A WAY OF LIFE
If there is power in ingenuity, then it found its home within the vibrant halls of Khalifa University. On Research and Innovation Day, the campus pulsed with palpable energy, featuring advancements that are here to make a tangible difference.
We saw ideas flourish and dreams become reality through entrepreneurial endeavors and over 100 transformative technologies.
Immersed in this intellectual prowess was His Highness Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who acknowledged the remarkable contributions of faculty members and explored 60 innovative projects, 36 PhD research posters, and 10 promising startups.
Was this event the sole melting pot for stakeholders from various sectors?
Far from it.
Firefighting drones, heterogeneous robots, flight-lock physically-unclonable function (PUF) shields for chips, and the field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based security system grabbed the spotlight at UMEX and SIMTex 2024.
Among the collaborations was the partnership between Khalifa University and German universities, as well as the German Emirati Institute, and the future was forged anew. At Khalifa University, even the boundaries of space appear porous with the acceptance of our unique PhD research by the Emirates Mars Mission, to better understand the atmosphere of Mars.
Other milestones on our path to nurturing talent led to the inauguration of the Cybersecurity Academy and the Siemens Energy Innovation Center, while the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) showcased impactful healthcare and life sciences research at Arab Health 2024.
Beyond academia, our Century Challenge - the region's largest cycling event had a turnout of over 1,500 cyclists - who pedaled across the UAE’s breathtaking mountain range, and the Global Day that celebrated the multicultural fabric of the university.
Truly, the discoveries and innovations of our last quarter continue to shape our path. And the best part? There's even more to come in the next.
WELCOME BACK TO KU TIMES.

RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN NATURE COMMUNICATIONS SHOWS EFFICIENT SOLAR ENERGY UTILIZATION FOR
SUSTAINABLE FRESHWATER PRODUCTION WITH ZERO BRINE
Making ways for efficient solar energy utilization and freshwater production, a team of researchers from Khalifa University has found that solar vapor generators decline in performance due to the loss of light absorption rather than the physical blockage of pores by salt and, in fact, the presence of salt can actually enhance the evaporation process, even in the absence of light.
The findings, published in Nature Communications, were observed on a scalable Solar Vapor Generation and Crystallization (SVGC) device, an IPprotected technology. This open access research paper titled, Sustainable Biomimetic Solar Distillation with Edge Crystallization for Passive Salt Collection and Zero Brine Discharge was fully developed as part of the MSc and PhD theses. The Khalifa University research team includes Dr. TieJun (TJ) Zhang, Associate Dean, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and Professor, Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Faisal AlMarzooqi, Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering; Mohamed A.
