In this edition, we celebrate the incredible moments that have shaped our time at Khalifa University. Filled with experiences that have brought our campus community together, 2024 was another stellar year of academic innovation, entrepreneurial and sustainable milestones.

Research innovation in food and water, collaborations, and advancements in climate studies, and new rankings are redefining excellence in higher education and research. Among the impactful collaborations that drive global change is the The UAE Government’s selection of Khalifa University to establish a Polar Research Center. Additionally, the launch of the Climate Solutions Research Network at COP29 in Baku positions us at the forefront of global climate initiatives.

As you go through such milestones that highlight our commitment to innovation and collaboration, you will also come across the unique talents and achievements of our students, faculty, and staff.

Highlights of the latest important announcements, strategic initiatives, new partnerships, and VIP visits

PHD GRADUATE SARA ALKHOORI IN FORBES MIDDLE EAST’S 30 UNDER 30 LIST

Dr. Sara Alkhoori’s research work at Khalifa University focused on catalytic materials for converting palm oil into eco-friendly biofuels, such as green diesel.

With biodiesel’s expected growth in the UAE, due to regulations promoting green fuels and the country’s status as a global petroleum hub, her work is foundational for advancing biofuel research.

Currently, as a Scientist at ADNOC Refining, Dr. Alkhoori is involved in scaling up biofuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), contributing to the UAE’s clean energy transition.

Dr. Alkhoori credits Khalifa University for her development over nearly a decade, supported by her mentor, Professor Kyriaki Polychronopoulou.

In 2024, she was honored on the Forbes Middle East 30 Under 30 list in Science and Innovation and received the 2023 L’OrealUNESCO Award for Women in Science, affirming her contributions to sustainable energy.

To me, these honors are more than awards—they are calls to action.

UAE GOVERNMENT SELECTS KHALIFA UNIVERSITY TO ESTABLISH POLAR RESEARCH CENTER

Khalifa University was chosen by the UAE Government to establish a dedicated Polar Research Center, as part of the plans to boost the country’s status among global leaders in polar research. This project is a collaboration between the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, the National Centre of Meteorology, and Khalifa University, and incorporates input from scientists, experts, and diplomats to define key research priorities in scientific, technological, and commercial applications.

MOU WITH LOCKHEED MARTIN TO ENHANCE COLLABORATION

ON AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE TECHNOLOGIES

As a first step under the agreement, Lockheed Martin will expand its Center for Innovation and Security Solutions (CISS) to Khalifa University’s Main Campus, creating a platform for long-term innovation, training, and technological leadership, thereby strengthening the UAE’s position as a global leader in aerospace and defense capabilities.

ANKABUT AND SIEMENS FORGE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Khalifa University’s Ankabut Information Technology and Siemens Industrial signed an MoU to collaborate on digital transformation and smart campus solutions for the higher education sector. The strategic partnership will cover a pilot project, market penetration, and enhanced research and innovation, in line with UAE’s strategic goals for innovation in education and sustainability.

DEVELOPING UAE’S FIRST NATIONAL HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS LAB

Mubadala Investment Company, Emirates Global Aluminium, Strata Manufacturing Company, and Khalifa University signed an agreement to establish the UAE’s first national laboratory and research program focused on high-temperature materials.

Located at the Main Campus, this state-of-the-art facility will significantly advance high-temperature materials research in the UAE, facilitating both practical industrial applications and academic studies. Currently, such research is conducted only abroad, making this initiative a pivotal development for the region’s scientific and industrial landscape.

KHALIFA UNIVERSITY IN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH IIT-DELHI ABU DHABI CAMPUS

Khalifa University signed a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Abu Dhabi (IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi) that was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi, India’s leading STEM institution, will collaborate with Khalifa University on research and academic programs, sharing of research facilities and lab spaces, and mobility of student and faculty exchanges.

TSINGHUA ENTREPRENEUR FELLOWS INTERACT WITH H.E. OMAR SULTAN AT KHALIFA UNIVERSITY

H.E. Omar Sultan AlOlama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Office (UAE) interacted with delegates from the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (SEM) Entrepreneur Fellows Program – Middle East Module 2024, hosted at Khalifa University. During the meeting, H.E. Omar Sultan Al Olama offered valuable insights on the UAE’s strategic direction in AI and showcased the UAE’s vision to shape the digital future. The event was organized for the 5th and 6th cohorts of the Entrepreneur Fellows Program – a Khalifa UniversityTsinghua University collaboration – that represented a cross-section of industries in China. H.E. Amal Al Jaberi, CEO of Khalifa University Enterprises Company (KUEC), and Saja Abdulla Albudehaish, CEO of Beyond Education, shared their perspectives during the event.

SPAIN HONORS PROF. MARCOS LÓPEZ DE PRADO WITH KNIGHTHOOD

Khalifa University’s Professor of Practice from the Mathematics department, and ADIA Lab scientist and Advisory Board member, Professor Marcos López de Prado has received the Officer’s Cross and diploma of the Royal Order of Civil Merit, one of Spain’s highest honors, from His Majesty King Felipe VI and the Government of Spain. The award was presented at the investiture ceremony held in Abu Dhabi by H.E. Íñigo de Palacio España, Ambassador of Spain to the UAE

NOBEL LAUREATE PROF. GUIDO IMBENS SHARES INSIGHTS ON CAUSALITY AND DATA ANALYSIS

Prof. Guido Imbens, 2021 Economic Sciences Nobel Prize winner, shared his insights on the complexities of data analysis in today’s research landscape during a special visit to the Khalifa University Main Campus where he engaged with faculty and students of the Mathematics Department.

A significant part of Prof. Imbens’ visit was a fireside chat titled ‘Causal Inference and Challenges in Data Analysis’, which was facilitated by Prof. Emilio Porcu, and Prof. Jorge Passamani Zubelli, Department Chair, Mathematics. Prof. Imbens, who was offered an overview of the Mathematics Department, later toured the campus.

RIC-2D SHOWCASES UAE’S INNOVATION IN ADVANCED MATERIALS AT I2DM2024

Khalifa University’s Research & Innovation Center for Graphene and 2D Materials is proud to play a pivotal role in graphene and related materials’ research and innovation, contributing to the UAE’s status as a leader in fostering research and development in advanced materials, said His Excellency Homaid Abdulla Al Shimmari, Chairman of RIC-2D’s Senior Management Board, at the Arab region’s first Innovative & Industrial 2D/Advanced Materials Summit & Expo (I2DM2024).

Organized by RIC-2D and Phanoms Foundations, I2DM2024 has brought together some of the brightest minds from around the globe to the Arab region for the first time. The summit that runs until 28 November explored the insights and innovations in the industry, led by experts who offered plenary and keynote talks. They included Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Andre Geim, University of Manchester, UK, and Professor Yury Gogotsi, Drexel University, US, Director, A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute.

HEALTHY LONGEVITY SYMPOSIUM

Khalifa University continues to play a vital role in advancing research and education in the fields of life sciences, genetics, and health and longevity, contributing to the global dialogue on improving health outcomes, said Prof. Habiba Alsafar, Conference Chair and Dean, Khalifa University College of Medicine and Health Sciences, at the second edition of the Healthy Longevity Symposium. Organized by Khalifa University and supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and the Department of Community Development, the Second Healthy Longevity Symposium brought together more than 25 leading experts for 12 insightful sessions, including a panel discussion, focused on the science of healthy aging and personalized wellness.

ONCE AGAIN TOP IN UAE IN QS ARAB REGION RANKINGS 2025

Khalifa University has jumped three slots to be ranked top in the UAE and 4th in the Arab region in the QS Arab Region Universities Ranking 2025, which assessed over 246 institutions across the region. With a score of 100 in Papers per Faculty and International Faculty Ratio, Khalifa University also scored 94.4 in Citations per Paper in the QS Arab University Rankings 2025, using 10 key indicators.

AMONG TOP GLOBAL UNIVERSITIES IN DELIVERING IMPACTFUL RESEARCH

According to SciVal analytics, more than 57% of Khalifa University publications are featured in the top 10% of international scientific journals, receiving the highest citations per paper ratio in 2024 when benchmarked against the top 10 QS-ranked universities. Khalifa University publications totaled 7,018 from the 2022 – 2024 period and received more than double the citations compared to the global average for similar research worldwide.

ADVANCING WATER QUALITY WITH ETIHADWE PARTNERSHIP

Khalifa University’s Centre for Membranes & Advanced Water Technology (CMAT) and Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) signed an MoU to enhance water treatment and resource management in the UAE.

The agreement outlines a framework for both partners to explore and evaluate advanced membrane technologies, improve water quality, and optimise desalination operations through AI and machine learning technologies.

MENA CLIMATE SOLUTIONS RESEARCH NETWORK LAUNCHED AT COP29 BAKU

Khalifa University, through the UAE Universities Climate Network (UCN), actively engaged in knowledge-sharing forums to inspire decision-makers towards addressing climate change, sustainability, and technological innovation during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Faculty members led and participated in six key workshops and discussions such as the UCN Youth Engagement Workshop which included two undergraduate students who showcased the impact of student-led efforts. Representing the university were faculty members including Dr. Samuel Mao, Professor, Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering, and Co-Chair of the UAE UCN, who was a Chair and an invited panelist in multiple workshops. Dr. Khaled Alawadi, Associate Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, participated in discussions on sustainable urban development; and Dr. Shadi Hasan, Director, CMAT, contributed to dialogues on water security and technological innovations.

IROS 2024

The 36th edition of the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2024) - the first global event of its kind in the MENA regionsuccessfully raised the profile of Abu Dhabi as Global Destination for Robotics, Intelligent Systems and Advanced Technology Innovation.

Researchers, academics, scientists and regulatory stakeholders inspired guests and visitors with their impactful plenary talks, keynote sessions, and individual poster and oral presentations at IROS 2024 that opened at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The five-day conference and exhibition also witnessed a host of new technology demonstrations in various challenges and competitions across the fields of applied research in robotics and intelligent systems, captivating the audience for their global appeal and reach.

Themed Robotics for Sustainable Development, IROS 2024 attracted several thousand researchers, academics, leading corporate figures, and industry professionals from across the world. The 13 forums across four days covered the rapid development of robotics technologies and their relevance to policymakers, socio-economic impact, the role of multiple avatars, human-robot coexistence, opportunities for industrial sectors, and the future of robots.

H.E. PROF. AL HAJRI MEETS WITH HONORARY

PRESIDENT OF NEW UZBEKISTAN UNIVERSITY

President Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri and Dr. Ashraf Al Najdawi, Acting Vice-President of External Relations and Chief of Staff, met with Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann, the Honorary President of New Uzbekistan University (NUU). The meeting focused on strengthening collaborative efforts and enhancing academic partnerships between the two institutions, highlighting a shared commitment to educational excellence and innovation.

STRENGTHENING TIES WITH UZBEKISTAN AHEAD OF CENTRAL ASIA UNIVERSITIES FORUM

H.E. Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri welcomed H.E. Abdulaziz Akkulov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan, at the Main Campus, ahead of H.E. Prof. Al Hajri’s visit to Uzbekistan, where he served as a keynote speaker at the Central Asia Universities Forum, organized by Times Higher Education (THE) and the New Uzbekistan University. During their meeting, Dr. Alhajri outlined Khalifa University’s strategic vision to enhance cooperation with universities in Uzbekistan and across Central Asia.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC SEEKS PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

H.E Prof. Ebrahim Alhajri welcomed H.E. Renso Herrera Franco, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the UAE, to the Main Campus to discuss the potential academic collaborations between the countries. Ambassador Franco also has the chance to tour our research facilities and learn more about our team’s innovative projects, all aimed at driving economic progress in the UAE.

ENERGY CONTRIBUTIONS AND FUTURE TALENT SHOWCASED AT ADIPEC 2024

The SPE Student Chapter at Khalifa University hosted SPE International President Terry Palisch as part of the SPE ADIPEC University Program, fostering an inspiring exchange of knowledge and insights among students and industry leaders.

H.E. Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri discussed potential collaborations with leading organizations and highlighted the university’s contributions to the energy sector during the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024.

During the Young ADIPEC segment, the university’s Recruitment and Admissions department organized a session on ‘Plan Your Career Path’, equipping high school students with valuable tools for their future careers. Additionally, Khalifa University’s Math, Physics, Earth Science, and Chemistry departments engaged students in interactive activities whereas faculty, researchers, and students showcased their innovative research at the pavilions of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Khalifa University has become an official member in the ATLAS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, located in Geneva, Switzerland.

The University has also become a member at the ATLAS experiment as well as the UAE-ATLAS Cluster which comprises three other universities. This will greatly increase the visibility of the Khalifa University College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, facilitating student exchange programs and contributing to impactful scientific publications. The Khalifa University research plans are focused on physics beyond the Standard Model, Physics Modelling, Jet Physics and Physics-Computing multidisciplinary research topics.

STRATEGIES FOR ADVANCING RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTED AT 2024 RESEARCH RETREAT

Research teams met with senior management to discuss key strategies for advancing research at the Khalifa University Research Retreat 2024. The discussions focused on critical areas, including strategic alignment with industry partnerships, research commercialization, funding opportunities, fostering a robust research culture, and optimizing infrastructure support.

ADNOC GROUP DELEGATION VISITS MAIN CAMPUS

A delegation from ADNOC Group, led by Yaser Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of People, Commercial & Corporate Support, and Dr. Saleh Al Hashmi, Director, Commercial & In-Country Value Directorate, and Member of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa University, met H. E. Prof Ebrahim Al Hajri to discuss collaborative initiatives. The meeting underscored the commitment of both organizations to enhance education and research in the energy sector, fostering innovation and development in the region.

ARIC JOINS DEMONSTRATION OF PIONEERING AVIATION ROBOTIC ARM TECHNOLOGY IN GERMANY

Sanad, Lufthansa Technik Middle East (LTME), and Khalifa University’s Advanced Research and Innovation Center (ARIC) have successfully demonstrated their innovative robotic arm at Lufthansa Technik’s headquarters in Germany, marking a significant advancement in integrating AI within the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry. Together, they have developed an automated chord measurement system - a firstof-its kind aerospace R&D initiative successfully tested in the UAE - improving efficiency and accuracy of MRO processes.

GENOMICS AND PRECISION MEDICINE ADVANCEMENTS HIGHLIGHTED AT AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HUMAN GENETICS ANNUAL MEETING

Representatives from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), M42, and Khalifa University showcased Abu Dhabi’s advancements in genomics and precision medicine at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) 2024 Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. ASHG is the world’s largest platform for advancing human genetics through research, education, and advocacy. M42 and DoH presented six research initiatives that highlight the transformative role of genomics and precision medicine, including the groundbreaking progress of the Emirati Reference Genome Project.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program, in partnership with Khalifa University, celebrated its 11th edition by honoring six visionary Arab female scientists from the region. Recognized for their groundbreaking research in fields, these trailblazers including PhD researchers Fatima Alshamsi and Israa Al Hussain Al Hassan Othman have each received grants to support their innovative work.

Fatima Alshamsi was recognized for her work including the discipline of Transcriptomics, researching the topic “Identifying Genes Promoting Endothelial Cell Dysfunction in Diabetic Cardiovascular Complications,” whereas Israa Al Hussain Al Hassan Othman under the discipline of Nanomaterials and Photocatalysis, researching the topic “Development of Quantum Dots (QDs) and Their Nanocomposites for Photocatalytic Applications”.

KHALIFA UNIVERSITY HOSTS 4TH WATER RESEARCH COMMUNITY MEETING, FIRST TIME IN ABU DHABI

Advancements in water technology and sustainable solutions was the focus of the 4th Water Research Community Meeting co-hosted by Khalifa University’s Center for Membranes and Advanced Water Technology (CMAT) and Saudi Water Authority. Taking place in Abu Dhabi for the first time, the event gathered experts and researchers who discussed themes covering Sustainability and Advanced Materials, Renewable and Clean Energy, Process Innovation, and Circular Economy.

NEW CONTROL METHODS IN MODERN POWER GRIDS PRESENTED AT VSS 2024

A total of 57 regular papers including six that were authored or co-authored by Khalifa University faculty were presented during the 17th International Workshop on Variable Structure Systems (VSS 2024), the premier conference coming to the UAE for the first time, facilitating exchange of ideas in variable structure systems and sliding-mode control, a significant field in control engineering.

Organized by Khalifa University, and supported by the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau, VSS 2024 was also a major international IEEE co-sponsored conference. The event brought together around 60 researchers and experts in academia and industry from 17 countries across North, Central, and South America, Europe, and Asia. Featuring three plenary talks as well as regular sessions, the papers highlighted advanced control techniques crucial for stability in modern power networks, renewable sources, robotics and aerospace applications.

EXPERT EXPLORES POWER ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY AT SEMINAR

A seminar titled ‘Power Electronics Technology – Quo Vadis’ brought together experts and enthusiasts to hear from Prof. Frede Blaabjerg of Aalborg University, Denmark. Held at the Sas Al Nakhl (SAN) Campus, the event focused on the critical role of power electronics in the evolving landscape of global energy systems, addressing the innovations and challenges that will shape the future of this essential technology.

Prof. Blaabjerg, a leading expert in the field, is recognized for his research in areas such as adjustable-speed drives, microgrids, and renewable energy technologies, and has received the 2019 Global Energy Prize for his significant contributions. He discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Key topics included the evolution of power devices, reliability in power electronics, and the stability of power electronic-based power systems.

NANO 2024 ATTRACTS LARGE

OF LEADING SCIENTISTS

Khalifa University hosted the 17th International Conference on Nanostructured Materials (NANO 2024) for the first time in the MENA region in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism. The event highlighted advancements in nanostructured materials and facilitated networking among leading global researchers.

The biennial international conference gathered leading researchers from academia, industry, and government to discuss and present cutting-edge developments in nanostructured

materials, nanomechanics, AI in nanotechnology, as well as nanofluids. Keynotes, 16 technical themes, and plenary talks from world renowned experts included a Nobel Physics committee member.

More than 500 papers were received by the selection committee with nearly 59% from the Middle East and Africa region. These papers had over 1,200 authors, out of which 533 are from the UAE, 222 from India, 74 from Saudi Arabia, 59 from Italy, 39 from Qatar and 30 from Japan.

This year’s Fursah Careers Fair engaged both employers and students with 63 organizations and institutions providing a dynamic platform for talented Khalifa University students to explore a wide array of career paths and internship opportunities. The event featured a full day of professional networking, where students met industry leaders and gained insights into various fields.

SPIES 2024 FOCUSES ON TRANSFORMATIVE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Leveraging technologies to create a smarter, more resilient energy infrastructure was the focus of the 6th International Conference on Smart Power & Internet Energy Systems (SPIES 2024) which was held at Khalifa University. With welcome remarks from Prof. Ahmed Al Durra, Associate Provost for Research, and General Chair, SPIES, the conference gathered experts from academia, industry, and government to foster collaborations in the field of power and energy. GSRA 2024 AWARDS HONORS 88 STUDENTS

A total of 88 students received the 2024 Graduate Students Research Award (GSRA), were guided by 63 faculty members. These students, representing diverse fields including Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, excelled in three categoriesOutstanding Graduate Student, Elite Young Researcher, and Young Innovator.

MECOM 2024 BRINGS TOGETHER LEADERS IN COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING

The IEEE Middle East Conference on Communications and Networking (MECOM) - a collaboration with the IEEE Communications Society, local IEEE Sections, ComSoc Chapters, and sister societies across the Middle East was organized in the Main Campus. With welcome remarks from Prof. Bayan Sharif, Provost, Khalifa University, the four-day event had a series of tutorials including four keynotes, two panel discussions and lectures. Topics ranged from ‘AI and Zero Trust’ to semiconductor design and Challenges and Solutions in future communication networks. The event followed the 6G Summit organized by TII- Abu Dhabi, where Khalifa University’s 6GRC Director, Prof. Meourane Debbah, served as general co-chair.

FUTURE OF CLOUD COMPUTING UNFOLDS AT CLOUDCOM2024

The 15th IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science( CloudCom 2024) brought together experts and thought leaders in the field of cloud computing at the Main Campus in a three-day event.

With welcome remarks from Prof. Ahmed Al Durra, Associate Provost for Research, the conference also includes messages from Dr. Baker Mohammad, General Chair, and Dr. Ibrahim Elfadel, Program Chair, who emphasized the importance of collaboration among academia, industry, and government in addressing current challenges in the cloud computing landscape.

Co-organized and co-sponsored by Khalifa University, the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Cloud Computing Association, CloudCom 2024 features a single-track format, keynotes, high-quality presentations, and special sessions on Edge-Cloud Computing, Blockchain technology, and cybersecurity.

FACULTY SPEAKS ON GLOBAL AEROSPACE COLLABORATION AT HK POLYU SUMMIT

A ‘Global Collaboration for a Transformative Future in Aerospace Innovation was the topic of Aerospace Engineering faculty Dr. Yusra Abdulrahman’s presentation, who was an invited guest speaker at the Aerospace Innovation Research Summit hosted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Dr. Abdhulrahman also shared insights on the groundworking research work and impactful collaborations at Khalifa University.

AEROSPACE SYSTEMS GROUP WINS OUTSTANDING RESEARCH PAPER AWARD AT SPACE RESEARCH CONFERENCE 2024

Khalifa University’s Intelligent and Autonomous Aerospace Systems Group has won the Outstanding Research Paper Award in the Space Situational Awareness session at the Space Research Conference (SRC) 2024. This first-of-its-kind event was organized by the UAE Space Agency in Abu Dhabi as part of the World Space Week activities.

The award-winning paper titled ‘Hybrid Sensor Networks: Space Debris Tracking through Intelligent Distributed Space Systems and Ground-Based Observations’ tackles the critical issue of orbital congestion caused by Resident Space Objects (RSOs).

The research team working on this project is led by Professor Roberto Sabatini and includes PhD student Khaja Faisal Hussain, Dr. Kathiravan Thangavel, Dr. Noureldin Safwat, and Assistant Professor Alessandro Gardi, form the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

The award-winning paper will be featured on the UAE Space Agency’s Space Research Platform.

2024 IEEE INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION AWARD FOR FACULTY

Khalifa University 6G Center Director Prof. Merouane Debbah has been awarded the 2024 IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Industrial Innovation Award for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Region for his significant impact on major telecom operators and manufacturers as well as artificial intelligence sectors.

Khalifa University faculty Prof. Roberto Sabatini, Department of Aerospace Engineering, has been elected as VicePresident of Technical Operations by the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS). This appointment not only highlights Prof. Sabatini’s extensive contributions to aerospace systems research, but also innovation and education, over the past three decades.

TWO SCIENTISTS AMONG CLARIVATE’S 2024 HIGHLY CITED RESEARCHERS LIST

Khalifa University faculty have been named among the Clarivate’s 2024 Highly Cited Researchers List with several of their articles ranking on the Web of Science’s top 1% citations for field and year.

Prof. Merouane Debbah, Director, Khalifa University 6G Research Center, and Prof. Zhiguo Ding, Computer and Information Engineering, have been selected for authoring multiple Highly Cited Papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for their fields and publication year in the Web of Science, over the past decade.

In the UAE, Prof. Debbah has distinguished himself in the field of Computer Science whereas Prof. Ding has achieved remarkable recognition by authoring multiple Highly Cited Papers that rank in the top 1% for both Engineering and Computer Science fields.

FACULTY ELECTED CHEMICAL ENGINEERING JOURNAL EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBER

Khalifa University faculty, Dr. Dinesh Shetty, Associate Professor, Chemistry and Theme Leader in the Center for Catalysis and Separations (CeCaS), has been inducted into the editorial board of the Chemical Engineering Journal, a Scopus top 1% premiere journal. Dr. Shetty has six patents to his name and is the author of 53 peer-reviewed journal papers and more than 30 conference papers. His group research is focused on developing multifunctional porous polymers/frameworks and hybrid materials for various applications, including water purification, renewable energy, and catalysis.

INVITED TALK AT INTERNATIONAL THERMODYNAMICS 2024 CONFERENCE IN THE NETHERLANDS

A talk on the ‘Design of catalysts for CO2 conversion and hydrogen production by computational modeling tools’ was delivered at the International Thermodynamics 2024 Conference in The Netherlands by Professor Lourdes Vega, Director, Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH) and Theme lead of Energy and Hydrogen at Research and Innovation Center on Graphene and 2D materials (RIC2D), Khalifa University.

Also present were three PhD researchers from the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department at the Conference. Additionally, Mariam Alqubati, Nuha Sahir, and Mohammad Al Hamadi, attended the RASPA Workshop 2024 hosted by the Delft University of Technology, gaining valuable insights and skills to advance their research work on molecular simulations and thermodynamics. The researchers are currently working on 2D materials to enhance hydrogen production from water at the Research and Innovation Center on Graphene and 2D materials (RIC2D). They also interacted with Khalifa University alumnus Fareeha Shadab, who is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at Delft University of Technology.

STUDENTS GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN NUCLEAR ENERGY SAFETY AND OPERATIONS AT FNC TECHNOLOGY, SOUTH KOREA

Four Khalifa University Chemical Engineering students gained in-depth insights into the operations, radiation safety, and hands-on training at South Korea’s FNC Technology, as part of a holistic eight-week internship program, to equip themselves with skill sets essential for managing the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy infrastructure.

Ahmed Alhosani, Alyazia Alkalbani, Amal Alhashmi, and Jaafer Aljefri successfully completed their projects supported by their South Korean mentors during the internship program. Their projects included ‘An overview of periodic safety review work for Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)’, ‘Acquiring general knowledge related to safety performance indicators in the periodic safety review (PSR)’, ‘Literature survey on Rankine cycle analysis tool for the optimal design on Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy System. (NRHES)’, and ‘Understanding the degradation mechanism of materials and developing its mitigation methodology at NPPs’.

EID AL ETIHAD 53 WITH FESTIVITIES HELD AT MAIN CAMPUS

As part of the celebrations for Eid Al Etihad, the 53rd Union Day of the UAE, Khalifa University proudly hosted a vibrant array of festivities, showcasing students’ talents and creativity. After the President’s tour of the festivities the Khalifa University Music Club began the program with the UAE national anthem, followed by welcoming remarks from Ahmed Hussain AlAwani, President of the Student Council.

In his speech, H.E. Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri remembered the vision of the UAE leadership, and emphasized sustainability, collaborative action, and cultural diversity. A captivating play depicting the UAE’s past and present highlighted the nation’s remarkable journey alongside other festivities, which were organized by students.

Early-Career Scientists Gain Essential Skills in Paleoclimate Data and Modeling Techniques

Two Khalifa University PhD researchers from the Earth Sciences department have become the first from the UAE to attend the paleoclimatology summer school held annually in Urbino, Italy. The 20th edition of the Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (USSP) consortium focuses on understanding the methods and models used to examine climate change through Earth History.

The two PhD researchers, Marwa Mohamed Shahid Vadakke Painkal and Indodeep Apurba Ghoshal, also presented their research, supervised by Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi, Associate Professor, Earth Sciences department.

AEROSPACE SYSTEMS GROUP WINS TWO AWARDS AT 43RD DIGITAL AVIONICS SYSTEMS CONFERENCE IN SAN DIEGO, US

Khalifa University’s Intelligent and Autonomous Aerospace Systems Group (FALCON Program) has won two ‘Best of Session’ awards, at the AIAA/IEEE 43rd Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) 2024, held in San Diego, US. The event is one of the most prestigious and longest running international annual gatherings of industry leaders, professionals, and experts in avionics systems for atmospheric and space flight.

The two awards for the Space Systems and Digital Flight Rules sessions highlight the university’s commitment to address key contemporary challenges in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA), areas that are crucial for the future of aviation and spaceflight operations.

FACULTY ELECTED VICE-CHAIR OF IAF’S INTERNATIONAL ASTRODYNAMICS COMMITTEE

Khalifa University faculty Dr. Elena Fantino, Associate Professor Aerospace Engineering, was unanimously elected as Vice-Chair of the Astrodynamics Technical Committee of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

Effective from 19 October 2024, Dr. Fantino’s appointment for three years was announced during the recent International Astronautical Congress held in Milan, Italy. Following her term, she will transition to the role of Chair, taking on an even greater leadership responsibility for another three years.

ELECTED AS FELLOW OF AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS

Khalifa University faculty member Dr. Bashar El-Khasawneh, Associate Professor of Practice in Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr. El-Khasawneh joins over 3,000 distinguished members who have attained the grade of Fellow of the ASME. He is also the Founding Chair of the ASME Professional UAE Section. In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. El-Khasawneh is the founder of Dexter Robotics, a startup company spun off from Khalifa University.

Khalifa University alumna Dr. Weshah Elgouda, a resident doctor specializing in internal medicine at George Washington University, Washington,US works closely with a multidisciplinary team to diagnose and treat complex medical conditions. She is developing a well-rounded understanding of patient care by rotating through various specialties like cardiology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. Khalifa University’s blend of theoretical and practical learning and its focus on personal growth and community involvement equipped Dr. Weshah with the skills to excel in the medical field.

Khalifa University alumna Zamzam Alhammadi, who made history as TechnipFMC first female Emirati quality control professional, shared her inspiring journey of breaking barriers and paving the way for more women professionals to enter the industry. In the ‘Women in Manufacturing Industry’ talk, organized by the Alumni Office, Alhmmadi shared her personal successes, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the manufacturing sector.
