HOW 29 STUDENTS LED COMMUNITY PROJECT TO RAISE AWARENESS OF UAE’S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE “ “

HAMDA SULTAN RASHED ALSOORI ALZAABI, AEROSPACE ENGINEERING :

"The work culture at CATIC was incredibly collaborative and supportive. The teams all worked closely together, and there were always volunteer mentors available to guide us and answer our questions. Everyone, from the engineers to the professors, was an expert in their field and did a great job explaining things clearly."

ABDULRAMAN MOHAMED SAIF ALHASAWI AL-ALI, COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES:

"Instead of just focusing on one research area, we got exposure to so many different aerospace engineering topics each week. It was more like a study abroad program, with lots of hands-on demonstrations and presentations rather than just research work. It gave me a much more comprehensive understanding of the industry."

A total of 29 students led a community project at Khalifa University to restore a series of photographs uncovering the untold history of US servicemen in Sharjah during World War II, providing a richer and more comprehensive understanding of the UAE's past. Using photo-enhancing technology, key photographs including one depicting the celebration of Victory in Europe (VE) Day at the Sharjah Allied Air Station provided a unique glimpse into the camaraderie and morale-boosting activities of the men stationed at the airbase, highlighting the human aspect of the important occasion.

The research team, led by Prof. Athol Yates, Associate Professor, International and Civil Security, was divided into several groups, each focusing on a different aspect of the US presence in Sharjah. The student research team also made posters of the airplanes that landed at the airbase, providing visual and historical context to these significant events, contributing to a deeper appreciation of the region's heritage.

The students analyzed historical documents received from the US security archives, which included records, letters, and the photographs.

Many documents were blurry and hard to read and also contained old and unusual abbreviations that the team did not initially understand, requiring additional research to interpret these small yet crucial details. By sharing their findings, the team hoped to raise awareness about the historical significance of Sharjah and the UAE between 1943 and 1945. The team has also planned for exhibitions and the publication of articles to share their discoveries with a wider audience.
