Fasting: A Means of Moral and Spiritual Growth for the Individual and Community

Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may develop taqwa (awareness of God).1 Fasting during the month of Ramadan is a difficult exercise. Amongst all the Islamic forms of worship it is the one that most tests man’s endurance and ability to control his appetites. To go without food, drink or sexual pleasure for 11-18 hours (in winter the fast is short and in summer long) may appear as self-torture to the outsider, but the believer sees this as selfdenial which trains him to fulfil his purpose in life. When God, the All-Wise tells the believers to fast, He explains to them that it was ‘prescribed to those before you’. Furthermore, He gives the reason for demanding this act of worship in these words: ‘so that you may develop taqwa (awareness of God)’. Allah 151
