he material state of this dunyā (temporal world) is heavily stratified, with the majority of the world’s population living in poverty whilst the uber-rich thrive in lofty mansions and spend their wealth lavishly. Against this abysmal backdrop, the good life appears to be defined through purely material standards. But the wise person sees through this mirage and realises that the current values of materialism and hedonism only delay the inevitable truth that we will all die and be placed in graves beneath the earth. It is at this moment one will be forced to meet their Maker, Who will decree whether a person will spend their eternal otherworldly life in Paradise or the Hellfire. 1

Prelude

The true believer is cognisant of these metaphysical truths, and as a result, is able to bear the difficulties of the present world with relative ease. This worldly life is nothing more than a test, and if a person lives a life strictly defined by the values of monotheism and acceptance of the Final Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, they will be welcomed in the permanent abode of bliss: Jannah. If one fully internalises this fact, they will not be perturbed by the anxieties and perplexities of this world, for they know that Allah will handsomely reward them for every virtuous act or supplication that they make to Him. There is an eternal abode of happiness that is waiting for you. But in order to enter it, you must activate it with your deeds. This work will provide the spiritual resources to ensure this process can be executed successfully. Salvation is within reach.

(It will be said to the believers)

“Enter ( Jannah) in peace and security.” al-h.ijr, 46 2

Jannah is Waiting or You

A

fter leading the Fajr prayer on one given morning, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬did something peculiar: he began to stretch his hand out in the air, as if he was trying to pluck something metaphysical or incorporeal. During this fascinating sight, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was smiling profusely. Eventually, however, the Prophet retracted his hand and resumed his normal state. This sight attracted the attention of the Companions  , who turned to the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and asked: “On this day, we found you doing something that we have never seen you do before. It was as if you stretched your hand out and were trying to pluck something. But then you suddenly pulled your hand back.” The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ addressed the query of the Companions  by stating: 3

On the Day of Judgement, in moments of d arkne ss, Allah will allow the good deed s of the believer s to brighten their bodie s as glowing light to n avig ate the p ath . In Paradise , the glittering trace s of the se good deed s will remain on their bodie s forever as an additional l ayer of adornment . 29

Your Appear ance in Jannah

Thus, in order to have your physical form beautified in Jannah, it is imperative that you adopt a beautiful mode of comportment in this worldly life. If you concentrate on amplifying your inner state in this world, Allah b will reciprocate by amplifying your beauty in the other world.

(It will be said to the believers)

“Enter ( Jannah) in peace and security.” al-h.ijr, 46

4 Your Heavenly Welcome T

he noble Companion ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib h is reported to have said: “Those who are mindful of their Lord will be led to the Garden. Once they arrive at its gate, they will come across a tree; at the base of that tree there will be two flowing streams. After being commanded to do so, they will approach one of them and drink from it. As a result, all the filth and foulness within them will be washed away. They will then proceed to drink from the other stream and make wuḍū’ from its water, which will cause all their outer filth to be washed away. This process will ultimately confer them a Jannah-like radiance.” To add to this awesome and breathtaking account, ʿAlī followed his statement by providing the following description 39

incredible figure, since a farsakh roughly corresponds to five miles. It is also reported that these khiyām will possess more than a thousand golden gates, with each and every one of them having an Angel stand before them. These Angels will have special gifts in their possession, which they will give to the believer during specific moments assigned by Allah. These exquisite guest houses will also be furnished with luxurious beds, which the believers can rest on whenever they desire:

َّ ْ ‫ُ ت نَ عَ ٰ فُ ُ ش ئ نُ نْ ت ْ َ ق َ َ ن‬ ‫ال نَ ت َ يْ ِن َد ٍنا‬ ‫ُمَّكِ ئ ي لَى ر ٍ بَط َِاهَا م ِإسَْ بر ٍ ۚ وج َى ج‬

“Those [believers] will recline on furnishings lined with rich brocade. And the fruit of both Gardens will hang within reach.” 24

Moreover, later on in the same sūrah, Allah states:

ْ‫ض‬ ‫ُ ت نَ عَ َ فْ َ ف‬ ‫خُر َو عَ قَْر ّ ح َس ن‬ ‫ا‬ ٍ ‫ُمَّكِ ئ ي ل َٰى رر ٍ ٍ ب ِ ٍي‬

“All [believers] will be reclining on green cushions and splendid carpets.” 25

In another sūrah of the Qur’an, the pleasures and bounties of the khiyām are outlined in further detail:

our Rivers of Jannah T

he presence of flowing or running water—such as that observed in rivers and other bodies of water—is proven to have positive psychological benefits, a phenomenon which is dubbed as “the blue mind effect”. The Qur’an makes effective use of this concept by almost always pairing the gardens of Paradise with rivers that flow beneath them. With regard to the point of origin of these rivers, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said that four rivers flow from the origin point of Sidrah al-Muntahā. He provided further details concerning the nature of these rivers by stating:

 ‫َ ن‬ ‫اط ن‬ َ ‫َا َونَه َْر ِنا ظ‬ ‫َاهر ِنا‬ ِ ‫نه َْر ِا بَ ن‬

“Two rivers [amongst them] are hidden and two are visible.” 101

Making a Wish in Jannah A

bdullāh ibn Masʿūd h related that the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “I have seen the very last person to exit the Hellfire and enter Paradise.” The status and story of this individual—who remains unnamed—is worthy of analysis since they likely committed many misdeeds during their life and only had the baseline level of faith to qualify as a Muslim. After receiving a lengthy amount of punishment in the Hellfire, they will be deemed purified and attain eligibility for Paradise. This person will exit the Hellfire whilst crawling and reduced to a scorched state; they will praise Allah for His deliverance, and then will receive His order to enter the gardens of Paradise. But upon entering Jannah, he will be disappointed to find 123

he most beautiful quarter of Paradise will be the neighbourhood of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, which will include all the honourable members of his pure household, as well as the family lines of other Prophets, such as the household of ʿImrān. The grandsons of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬will preside as the leaders of the youth of Paradise, with other Prophets and luminary figures assuming ancillary roles.

Seeing the Companions in Jannah

In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn are the two masters of the youth in Jannah, except for the two cousins ʿĪsā ibn Maryam and Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyā. And Fāṭimah is the master of all women in Paradise, except for the case of Maryam, the daughter of ʿImrān.”

Maryam o is considered an exception due to the high status conferred to her through the following divine address:

َ َّ َ ‫آ‬ َ‫ِإ ن ال َّٰله اص ْط فَٰ ِىك َو ط ّه ََر ِك َو اص ْط فَٰ ِىك عَ لٰى ِنسَ ِء الْعٰل ِم یْ ن‬

“Surely Allah has selected you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world.” 73

Thus, the highest station of Paradise will be conferred to the household of the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬and the household of ʿImrān. In another important Hadith, the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ enumerated the identities of the female leaders of Paradise by stating: “The leaders of the women in Jannah are four: Maryam, Fāṭimah, Āsiyah, and Khadījah.” Every one of these God-conscious women had their own distinct set of virtues. Maryam o was a pure and chaste woman who led a life of worship and countered the false slanders levelled against her through the divine intervention of Allah. Fāṭimah i 73 Āl ʿImrān , 42.

Highest Level of Jannah I

t is narrated that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb h once said: “If there were to be a caller from the Heavens who said that everyone will be going to Paradise except for one person, I would fear that I am that very person.” ʿUmar h then continued by stating: “And if there were to be a caller who said that every person will go to Hellfire except for one person, then I would be hopeful that I am that very person.” Such a marvellous statement from this eminent Companion demonstrates how the early predecessors of this religion had hope in Allah’s mercy whilst also fearing His eternal punishment. A Muslim should emulate these values and aspire to attain the best rewards and possessions in the Afterlife. 225
