THE EVOLUTION OF ROWING Rowing, or crew as it is sometimes called, is the oldest intercollegiate sport in America. The first sporting contest of any kind between two universities was a regatta between Harvard and Yale in 1852. That race is still held annually. The first formal women’s rowing program began in 1877 at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

Rowing is an NCAA championship sport for women only. The first championship meet was held in 1997 at Rancho Cordova, California.

Division II and Division III championships were added in 2002. Rowing continues to grow immensely in popularity, as the number of NCAA programs has grown from 74 in 1997 to over 140 in 2011. There are annually 22 schools invited to participate in the NCAA Championships. The Division I Championships consist of 11 schools that will be automatic qualifiers by winning their conference championship and 11 schools that will be at-large selections. KU can earn automatic qualifier status by winning the Big 12 Championship. The 2018 NCAA Championships will take place May 25 - May 27 in Sarasota, Florida.

A typical spring season competition consists of six races that are scored to determine the

team winner. Points are awarded based on the team’s finish in each race.

The races are: First and Second Varsity Eight, First and Second Varsity Four, and Third Varsity Eight. The First Varsity Eight is scored at the highest level with the other races awarding fewer team points.

Rowers possess good strength and aerobic endurance characteristics. Athletes in this sport must thrive in a team environment.

With eight rowers and one coxswain in a boat performing a common task, everyone must have a strong commitment to her teammates to bring the boat to racing speed.

ROWING - THE SPORT At the Olympic and intercollegiate level, rowing races are 2,000 meters long (about 1.25 miles), which takes approximately six to seven minutes to complete. As many as seven boats can race at a given time. Each boat can hold from one to eight rowers and usually has an additional person, known as the coxswain (COX-sun), who steers and helps the team execute workouts and race strategy.

Rowers practice in a variety of boats, however, almost all of the races are in four or eight person boats with a coxswain.

ROWING AT KU Rowing at KU is a varsity sport, which means it is one of 18 sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball, that are administered and funded by the Athletic Department. The Athletic Department covers all the expenses of the women’s rowing team including equipment, travel, uniforms and scholarships. Rowing started as a club sport at KU in 1978 and was given full varsity status in 1995. Each year, the rowing team has an average team size of about 75 women.

NOVICE ROWING The team is comprised of two squads: the varsity squad, for athletes who are returning to row in their second, third or fourth year of competition, and the novice squad, for athletes in their first year of collegiate competition.

The vast majority of novices have no previous rowing experience prior to attending college.

The novice squad races against the novices from other schools. Novices are not expected to race against more experienced athletes from other programs. However, occasionally very talented newcomers can be moved up to row with the varsity in their first year. Both the varsity and novice squads are considered varsity athletes at KU and enjoy all the benefits that the Athletic Department offers, including

team carefully adheres to NCAA regulations concerning the amount of practice each athlete must complete with the goal centered around becoming a great student-athlete while leading a well-rounded life at KU.

Rowers begin the learning process by rowing in pairs, or boats built for two. It’s commonly known among the rowing community that “if you can row a pair, you can row anything.”

COACHES ON THE WATER

Unlike most team sports, the coaching staff can’t talk to their athletes once competition gets underway. Thus, the coxswains actually act as the “coach” on the water, guiding and directing the boat.

Rowing is the ultimate team sport. It’s not the strongest athletes, but the ones who work together the best that create the fastest boat.

Although it looks like rowers’ arms would be the most important factor, in reality about 70 percent of the stroke comes from their legs and 20 percent from their backs. Only the remaining 10 percent comes from arms.

PRACTICE Training for the racing season begins shortly after school begins in the fall in order to make sure everyone is ready to compete to the best of their ability in the spring. Practice on the water occurs in the fall and spring seasons and winter training is on land. Additional workouts with the strength and conditioning staff take place throughout the year in the Anderson Strength Center. This winter, the team will take a training trip to Florida to work out in warmer conditions. The KU rowing

Which rowers sit in which seats takes a lot of strategy. Typically, the most fundamentally sound rowers sit in seats seven and eight, while the bow pair (seats one and two) are lighter and do more turning. The middle four seats are occupied by the strongest rowers.

RACING The competitive season for rowing is in the spring from mid-March to the end of May. In the fall, the team competes in long-distance races to break up the training and acclimate themselves to a different style of competition.

KU races its Big 12 Conference opponents in Tennessee, Oklahoma and Kansas, and routinely travels to the East coast and the southern states for various competitions.

Rowing races, or regattas, are almost always held on weekends, so team travel usually involves little or no missed class.

SCHOLARSHIPS Rowing has 20 full scholarships, which can be divided up between members of the team. That is more than any other women’s sport at the NCAA level and second only to football among all teams. Typically, more than 40 members of the team earn a partial scholarship every year.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ROWER? Rowers are generally athletes with good strength and aerobic endurance. Being tall helps but is not always a measure of success.

Athletes in this sport must thrive in a team environment. With eight rowers in a boat doing the same thing, everyone must have a strong commitment to her teammates to make the boat go as fast as possible.

Race Day

In 2013, Kansas rowing began a new tradition at its home away from home - the Kansas Boathouse at Burcham Park. For the last five seasons, the Jayhawks have invited several teams to come to the Kansas River and participate in the Jayhawk Jamboree. In the spring, Kansas hosts its home events at the Wyandotte County Lake in neighboring Kansas City.

2016-17 Season recap

To start off the 2017 spring season, Kansas rowing traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to compete in the Cardinal Invitational. In the Third Varsity Eight race, Kansas earned its first victory of the season with a time of 7:13.092, outlasting top competitors Miami and Tennessee. Next the Jayhawks claimed third in the Varsity Four A competition with a time of 7:28.337. Kansas finshed fourth in the Varsity Eight race, crossing the finish line at 6:45.947, just fractions of a second behind third-place Clemson and five seconds behind top finisher Minnesota. KU’s Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four B boats completed back-to-back third-place finshes. The Jayhawks ended the invitational with a second-place finish for the Varsity Four C race.

Next up for the Jayhawks was thier first home regatta of the spring. Kansas took home the win after sweeping all six races in their dual against Creighton.

To being the dual, Third Varsity Eight A and B both out raced Creighton. The Jayhawks then beat the Bluejays in the First, Second and Fourth Varsity races. The last two races of the regatta also ended in victories for the First and Second Varsity Four boats of Kansas.

Looking to build off their early season successes, the Jayhawks traveled to Bloomington, Indiana, for a double dual against Indiana, Louisville and Michigan State. The Second and Third Varsity Four boats for Kansas knocked off Indiana to win their races with times of 7:53.00 and 8:11.90, respectively. The Third

Varsity Eight finshed in second place behind Michigan State with a time of 7:18.56.

Kansas was edged out by Oklahoma and Texas during the Big 12 Double Dual in Oklahoma City. Bad weather limited the time that was spent training on the water and Kansas had to work through some injuries. Strong winds also affected racing times, causing boats to finsh about a minute slower than normal pace. The Second Varsity Eight ended the day with the best time of the Kansas boats, finshing behind Oklahoma with a time of 7:31.034.

KU was looking to bounce back as it traveled to Fairfax Station, Virginia, for the George Mason Invitational and that is just what they did. First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight all placed first. First and Second Varsity Four boats both placed second just behind Geroge Washiongton University in their respective races.

Kansas was a major contributor to the Big 12 winning the Invitational with a total of 52 points over the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Colonial Athletic Association.

Kansas headed back home for the annual Dillons Sunflower Showdown.

In-state rival, Kansas State, started the day off strong with two-straight wins.

In the third race of the evening, the Jayhawks raced the First Varsity Four to their first victory outlasting the Wildcats by just three seconds. The Wildcats proved victorious once again during

the Third Varsity Eight race. Therefore, the Sunflower Showdown would come down to the last race of the night.

Kansas needed to win the First Varsity Eight to keep the trophy in Lawrence.

The Jayhawks won in comeback fashion after being down by a full boat length, they rallied together to pull ahead of Kansas State and winning by less than a second with a time of 6:00.01. The showdown ended in dramatic fashion for the seniors in their last home regatta.

Heading back to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the Big 12 Championship, the Jayhawks were eager to get back on the water after their powerful showing at the Sunflower Showdown. KU’s First Varsity Eight finished sixth in the Grand Final with a time of 6:45.203. This time was the program’s fastest time at Melton Hill Lake since it has started hosting the Big 12 Championship. Second Varsity Eight placed fifth with a time of 6:52.598.

The First Varsity Four race was a close one, with all six boats finishing within 30 seconds. Kansas also took fifth with a time of 7:23.889, just edging out Kansas State. Kansas outraced Tennesse and West Virginia for a fifth-place finish, crossing the finish line in 7:38.010. The last race of the day ended in exciting fashion. The Third Varsity Eight came from being a whole boat length behind Tennesse and pushed themselves to finish two-tenths of a second ahead of the Volunteers for fifth place. The Jayhawks ended the season with a fourth-place team finish at the Big 12 Championship.

They will compete in the Big 12 Championship at the end of the spring season. This year marks the seventh season that the Big 12 has hosted a fully-supported conference championship.

Strength & Conditioning The $8 million, 42,000-square-foot Anderson Family Strength & Conditioning Center is a split-level facility that features 20 Power Lift platforms and power racks, most recently outfitted with Elite Form 3D Camera technology which is used for measuring bar speed and calculating power output for each exercise performed in the rack. The training center houses Uesaka bumper plates and Olympic bars, along with two full sets of dumbbells to 120 lbs (5-35 in 2.5lb increments). While mostly a free-weight oriented program, Anderson also houses Keiser power equipment, eight one-of-a-kind high speed cable systems, and Hammer strength machines. In addition, a 50-yard open turf area for speed and agility development and a cardiovascular workout area are available.

THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football.

The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE ROCK` CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

The university has more than 40 nationally ranked academic programs and is home to major centers overseeing research in life span issues, the humanities, the environment, biodiversity, and polar ice sheets. A 2006 KU graduate with a degree in business administration, Cook-Callen was a member of the Jayhawk rowing team from 2002-04 and earned Jayhawk Scholar Student-Athlete honors during her career. She then spent two years (2004-06) as a team manager for the KU rowing team.

Fresh out of college, Callen spent the summer of 2006 at the Kansas City Rowing Club where she coached “Learn-to-Row” Clinics as well as junior and high school camps. The Garden City, Kansas, native also spent the summer of 2010 coaching at the US Rowing Freshman Camp.

Carrie Cook-Callen enters her sixth season as a member of the Kansas rowing coaching staff and first as interim head coach. Callen was named Interim Head Coach following the retirement of former head coach, Rob Catloth, in June 2017.

YEARS

Callen, a Kansas graduate who helped coach the University of Iowa into the top-20, was named an assistant coach for the KU women’s rowing team on June 29, 2012.

Most recently, in the 2016-17 season, Callen assisted in coaching Kansas’ varsity four rowers.

Callen led the First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four to fifth-place finishes at the Big 12 Championship.

Throughout the 2015-16 season, Callen coached Kansas’ First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four boats. Both went on to claim third-place finishes at the Big 12 Championship. The Second Varsity Four also earned Big 12 Boat of the Week honors after going undefeated at the Knecht Cup. With her guidance in 2014-15, the Jayhawks had a great showing setting up the First Varsity Eight to win the Dillons Sunflower Showdown with a Second Varsity Four win. The First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four swept the competition at the Cardinal Invite, while they took third and fourth, respectively, at the Big 12 Championship.

The 2013-14 season saw the varsity Jayhawk rowers claim nine first-place finishes. The First Varsity Four took first place in the Louisville Invite, Lake Natoma Invite, Big 12 Championship and the Sunflower Showdown.

A former Kansas rower herself, Cook-Callen served as the graduate assistant and varsity assistant coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ rowing team from August 2006 to June 2012. She spent the first five

Championship. In her second season, the Novice Eight went undefeated, claiming victories at the Occoquan Sprints, MACRA, Dad Vail and the ACRA National Championship. The Novice Four took silver at Dad Vail and three novices made the All-American Freshman Boat during her third season on staff.

Arnold has also coached learn-to-row and competitive programs for youth, juniors and masters at the Grand Rapids Rowing Association, the Detroit Women’s Rowing Association and Southeast Juniors Rowing Development Camp.

Kelsey Arnold enters her fourth season as a member of the Kansas rowing coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. Arnold, a graduate of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Allendale, Michigan, was named an assistant coach for the team in August of 2014.

During the 2015-16 season, Arnold coached the Third Varsity Eight to a second-place finish at the Knecht Cup in New Jersey. The Third Varsity Eight also contributed to the sweep of Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown.

In her first season with the Jayhawks, Arnold led the Third Varsity Eight rowers to a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championship and a firstplace finish against Kansas State to help win the Kansas Cup.

A walk-on rower at GVSU, Arnold was a member of the Laker Navy powerhouse from 2007-11.

She earned the ACRA National Championship title in the Novice Eight and twice in the Varsity Eight and made the ACRA All-America First Team all three years on varsity. Other highlights included a first-place finish in the Collegiate Eight at the Head of the Charles in 2009, and gold in the Dad Vail Novice Eight and D1 Varsity Eight. Overseas, she competed at the Women’s Henley Regatta in the Senior Eight and Elite Eight in 2008 and 2010 in Henley, England. Arnold also rowed outside of GVSU at Vesper Boat Club in the summer of 2008 and the U-23 National Team Selection Camp in 2009.

Pauly taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra at Chisholm Trail Middle School USD 233 during the 2015-16 school year.

Along with her rowing experience, Pauly has a history of coaching. At Tonganoxie High School, Pauly has been the head girls track coach and assistant girls’ volleyball and basketball coach.

Additionally, she has had experience as the head coach for the 8th grade girls’ volleyball team and assistant 8th grade girls’ basketball and track team at Tonganoxie Middle School.

Along with assisting in rowing, Pauly was an assitant coach for the girls’ volleyball and track teams at Chisholm Trail Middle School. To add to her repertoire, Pauly has spent a year as the

girls’ athletic director at Camp Lenox in 2014 and has coached club volleyball for the Midwest Juniors located in Wellsville, Kansas.

Rachelle Pauly enters her second season as an assistant coach on the Kansas rowing staff.

Being the newest addition to the coaching staff, Pauly brings a great breadth of teaching and coaching experience to the program to add to her previous rowing knowledge.

Pauly was a member of the Kansas rowing team from 2007-11 where she was also recognized for her academic achievement making the Big 12 Academic Honor Roll from 2008-11. Pauly began her college career at Cowley County Community College where she was a member of the track team and earned seventh place in the javelin at Nationals, earning the honor of All-American. Following her time at Cowley County Community College, Pauly spent her freshman year at KU rowing for the novice team. Her sophomore year, Pauly was a member of the Open Four at the Kansas Cup and a member of the Second Varsity Eight against Texas. Her junior season, Pauly rowed with the Second Varsity Eight for the entire season except the South-Central Regional, where she rowed with the Varsity Four. Her junior season was highlighted by the defeat of Kansas State in the Kansas Cup and finishing second in the Big 12 Championship. Pauly’s senior year she served the team as captain and rowed for the Second Varsity Eight, but finished the season in the First Varsity Four.

Douglas A. Girod, M.D., became the 18th chancellor of the University of Kansas on July 1, 2017, after serving for four years as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center. There he oversaw the educational, research, patient care and community engagement missions of the University of Kansas schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, with their total annual enrollment of more than 3,300 students; a workforce of more than 2,100 faculty and more than 4,000 staff; and research funding of nearly $100 million.

In addition to serving as executive vice chancellor, Dr. Girod also served as interim executive dean of the KU School of Medicine until March 24, 2014. Prior to those roles, he served as senior associate dean for clinical affairs and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

A surgeon, Dr. Girod joined the University of Kansas Medical Center faculty in 1994 and quickly rose through the academic

ranks, becoming chair of the otolaryngology department in 2002. He was named Russell E. Bridwell Endowed Chair in 2008.

Dr. Girod earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California at Davis and his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco. He completed his residency and an NIH research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to joining the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Girod served as vice chairman and research director in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Naval Medical Center in Oakland, California. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1982, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander and later earning the Meritorious Service Medal.

That care, which he has exhibited since his arrival as Athletics Director in January 2011, has helped KU’s coaches and studentathletes achieve outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages.

During 2016-17, 10 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason competition.

Stressing a culture of competitiveness and citizenship, Zenger has instituted KU Leads, a student-athlete development program dedicated to fostering committed leaders and supporting career development.

Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. He earned two degrees from Kansas State before coming to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels.

Zenger has spearheaded some $90 million in new Kansas Athletics facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances.

Notable among these is the completion of the DeBruce Center, the permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball.” In addition, a $2 million renovation of the football locker room is now complete.

The track surrounding the football field was removed in summer 2014, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. A $1 million renovation of the Jayhawks’ Sports Medicine Facility has provided modernized rehabilitation, an x-ray room and treatment areas. Fall 2015 saw the opening of McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s basketball team and an equal number of non-student-athletes. The beautiful new, nationally acclaimed Rock Chalk Park, home to KU soccer, softball, and track and field,

has already hosted USA, NCAA and Big 12 Conference meets, and more are on the horizon. And the new Jayhawk Tennis Center, a 12-court indoor-outdoor complex at Rock Chalk Park, now houses the KU tennis team.
