APSCUF-KU Newsletter Kutztown University Chapter Association of Pennsylvania State
Message From Chapter President, Thomas Stewart Every Tuesday morning during the semester, a truck full of groceries pulls up to the Lutheran Center on campus. Volunteers gather to unload the truck. During two sessions over the next two days, the food is distributed to more than 180 students each week through the Food Pantry. Students line up more than an hour before each session to collect bags of food for themselves. Homelessness and lack of food security are present among our students, even though it’s not always obvious. A former student worker of mine—now a graduate-used to show up each day dressed as if for a formal job interview. Only later did we find out that this student was sleeping in a trailer with no electricity or running water and would shower on campus before coming to work in our office. Over the past few years, numerous APSCUF members have volunteered their time at the Food Pantry to unload the truck and to hand out snacks and hot drinks to students waiting in line. Starting this year, APSCUF’s Student-Faculty Liaison Committee, led by Jason Crockett, will be organizing volunteer sessions. We will be reaching out to members who are interested and available to donate a bit of their time to help our students in need. These are our students, after all.
