MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL FOR NEARLY 170 COMBINED YEARS, CHA, SPRINGSIDE, AND NOW SCH HAVE BEEN WELCOMING families back to school every September. These schools have witnessed wars, relocations, mergers, fires, building projects, Sinatra in the Rec (or so legend has it), and so much more. This summer saw both the start of building something new—the McCausland Lower School & Commons—and the preservation of something old—the historic renovation of our entryway to the Wissahickon Inn, the Exchange. The continued development, evolution, and protection of our spaces are very important to delivering our mission and fostering our values. Space matters. In modern educational lingo, it’s often referred to as the third teacher.

A year from now, Phase II of our Campus Master Plan will be completed and our Building and Grounds Steve Druggan Head of School

Committee will focus on Phase III, when the Rec will get some much-needed upgrades. Why do we invest in our facilities? I think it’s amazingly clear. Is there really a better place in the Philadelphia area to have a lower school than perched on the edge of the Wissahickon? I think not. And is there a better place for upper schoolers to dig deeply into the questions of what makes us human via literature and history than in the Wissahickon Inn? If you aren’t sure, come walk with lower schoolers in their wellies through the Wissahickon, stop by a Players practice in the Rec, or talk to upper schoolers studying in the Henry Library or in front of the fire in the Exchange. Our spaces matter.

Of course, it also matters greatly what we do in those spaces, and this is another area where our school has excelled for nearly 170 years. At the center of what we do are the relationships that our faculty and staff build with our students. As educators, we are much more effective at helping our students reach and even surpass their dreams and goals when we know what makes them tick. We all remember the teachers in our lives who took the time to get to know us, held us to high standards, and then celebrated with us throughout our journey towards our dreams. Again, is there a better place to do this than our green urban campus—a campus that is just as alive after the academic day is over?

In those after-school hours, our students are working with passionate adults as thespians in the Rec; as engineers, designers, and programmers in the Robotics Lab; and as competitive athletes across our numerous fields and courts. As a school that requires participation in both athletics and activities, we have an incredible opportunity to ensure that we bring consistent expectations and experiences to our students throughout their time here at SCH. This is another example of how the spaces we have built and continue to develop bring learning to life on a daily basis.

Over the next 12 months there will be a few milestone moves across campus. Our youngest boys will move out of the Jordan Building and into their exciting new learning space at the edge of the Wissahickon, while the Inn will become the center for our Upper School. These new and renewed spaces are, in my humble opinion, some of the best possible third teachers anywhere in the world. Combined with our dedicated faculty and staff, these spaces are an essential part of our educational mission and values. Come visit and see why it’s such a great time to be an SCH student. We’re proud to stand on the shoulders of a century and a half of CHA and Springside greatness as we work with the next generation who will call these unique spaces their home.

STUDENTS GO BEYOND THE STAGE TO HELP AUDIENCES—AND THEMSELVES—ENGAGE WITH A CHALLENGING THEATRICAL WORK around socioeconomic discrimination. During the 2016-2017 season, they addressed gender discrimination as part of their production of Legally Blonde, and later that year they focused on mental illness around their production of Harvey. “Outside the Rec is a crucial aspect of Players to help aid viewers with processing, contextualizing, and learning from our shows,” explains Emma Godshall ’18, the 2017-2018 Players copresident and an actor in the Laramie production.

THIS PAST OCTOBER WAS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY of the death of Matthew Shepard, the gay university student who was beaten and left to die in a field near Laramie, Wyoming. Following this tragic event, members of the New York City Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie to interview residents about how the murder had impacted them and the town.

Transcripts of these interviews became the core of a play, The Laramie Project, which was presented this past spring by SCH Academy’s Players.

The Laramie Project significantly upped the ante with regard to the need for OTR’s educational efforts. The biases displayed in Laramie are far more overt and, unlike most Players productions, far more serious in their implications. And the challenges the play poses are not just for audiences to bear; the young actors had to stretch their notions of theater in order to authentically perform some of the characters in this piece.

For the past several years, students in Players have tackled issues presented by the plays they have chosen to perform through an educational outreach program called “Outside the Rec” (OTR). These educational activities are intended to help audiences be more aware of the biases that often lie at the heart of many older productions, as well as deal with challenging content. Last fall, Players presented My Fair Lady, and their educational outreach centered

Challenges for Actor as Well as Audience While Laramie is a historical drama based on an actual event, it is also a provocative touchstone for social issues that are still very much alive today, including LGBTQ equality, social justice, and homophobia. “Many of the opinions expressed in the play are challenging for theatergoers to hear,” explains

this, and the importance of using art and media to promote change in the world. They later met with the student actors to discuss technique and how to manage the difficult challenge of sympathetically portraying characters whose values they do not share. “The students approached their work on this play with a great deal of maturity, open-mindedness, thoughtfulness, and courage,” says Meghan Curry Rogers ’03, Players director, SCH faculty member, and alumna. “It challenged them, spurred thoughtful and difficult conversations in rehearsals, and elicited deep and honest emotional responses at a time in their lives when they are growing into and defining their own identities, both on and off the stage.”

But being able to have a “civil airing” of these different perspectives within the relatively safe environment of the theater provides a unique opportunity for more open and honest reflection. “[In this play] there’s no right or wrong, yes or no, but a spectrum of beliefs,” explains Seth Rabinowitz ’18, OTR crew head and cast member. “Whatever you believe, your beliefs will be challenged, and this will hopefully open the door to understanding.” Godshall expresses her hope “that through the play and our educational efforts, we can help people realize that we are all complex individuals, regardless of our beliefs or identifiers, and that this realization is the first step to unifying and working toward a humane society.”

Godshall says she worked hard to find nuanced ways to present her characters. “No matter how ill-intentioned or deeply flawed some of them may be, at the end of the day, they are still people.” Rabinowitz says the experience of working with the play showed him how much people’s views are shaped by their environments and the societies they grow up in, and that “change for the better can come and will come.” The visit

by Tectonic also helped him understand that theater is not just about making stories come to life, but about “connecting the messages, questions, and struggles of society to your own community. It made me much more grateful that I go to a school like SCH that encourages and celebrates the sharing of these stories and relaying messages of acceptance, cultural difference, and conversation.”

From Timelines to Word Maps OTR efforts for Laramie ranged from informal club-sponsored conversations among students interested in the topics covered by the play to a more formal display in the theater lobby providing historical and social context. The display included photos and news articles from the period; a timeline featuring highlights of subsequent related events such as the 2009 passage of the anti-hate crime bill known as the Matthew Shepard Act; student drawings of the shoes they envisioned their characters wearing (“You can’t begin to understand someone else until you’ve walked in their shoes”); and a 3D replica of the stage with a miniature version of the distinctive “word map” painted on its floor and representing some of the more evocative words from the play. “The audience was able to look down on the words as they listened to the characters say them,” explains Maidenbaum. “It added another layer to how they could connect with the play and the dialogue.”

Another OTR initiative to help set the context for the play was a visit by two actors from the Tectonic Theater Project, which was integrally involved in the creation of the original Laramie Project. The actors spoke with the entire Upper School about issues of social justice, the value of attending a play like

This past spring, senior Sean Terrey ’18 was recognized by the Philadelphia-area chapter of the Cappies organization for his outstanding performance in SCH Academy’s My Fair Lady.

Terrey’s performance as Professor Henry Higgins earned him the Cappie equivalent of an Oscar in the Lead Actor in a Musical category. SCH junior Gracie Lubisky was also nominated for her role as Eliza Doolittle in the Lead Actress in a Musical category.

The Cappies is a national organization “that trains high school theatre and journalism students to be expert writers, critical thinkers, and leaders.” Students gain experience writing reviews of area high school productions for their local media, and student actors and off-stage personnel gain recognition for their work at an annual gala sponsored by each chapter.

Following his recognition by the Cappies, Sean was honored again as the winner in the Individual Performance category at the 2018 Philadelphia Independence Awards for High School Musical Theater, at the Temple University Performing Arts Center. High school theater teachers and directors created these brand-new awards.

south korea’s first astronaut—a woman—visits sch academy Last March, Lower and Middle School girls were treated to a visit by Yi So-yeon, South Korea’s first and only astronaut, who traveled to space in 2008 on board a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Dr. Yi was selected as an astronaut out of 36,000 contestants vying for the title of South Korea’s first astronaut. During her animated and often amusing conversation with the girls, Yi shared a message of formidable resilience—one of the school’s core values—and answered questions such as “Who was your greatest teacher?” (her mother) and, her most popular question, “How do you sleep in space?” While at SCH, Yi also met with young entrepreneurs from the school's Venture Incubator program and visited with staff and students from the award-winning robotics program. wharton-bound student semifinalist in international high school entrepreneurial competition CEL Venture Accelerator student Andrew Cramer ’18 took 2nd place out of 700 teams in this winter’s Diamond Challenge, a unique opportunity for high school students from around the world to learn about entrepreneurship while putting their ideas into action. The final component of the Challenge involves pitching their idea for a new business concept or social venture before a panel of judges. Students must rise through a series of four competitive rounds before they qualify for the finals. Out of the 700 teams competing in Philadelphia, Cramer and his CampusSelect.org product won the semifinalist award and a package worth over $7,000 in prizes. This fall, Cramer will continue to deepen his business knowledge and finetune his venture as a freshman at Wharton’s undergraduate school, UPenn.

upper school team wins creativity award at state odyssey of the mind competition

students practice their bard-manship with visiting spoken word artists Spoken word poets Phil Kaye and Liz Acevedo, members of the national nonprofit organization, Project VOICE, visited SCH this past winter, performing and teaching workshops with Middle and Upper School poetry and creative writing students. Project VOICE is dedicated to promoting empowerment, improving literacy, and encouraging empathy and creative collaboration in classrooms and communities around the world. Kaye, who has performed in over 10 countries, and Acevedo, who is a National Poetry Slam Champion, spent two days at SCH inspiring our young writers with the power of poetry and spoken performance. An evening event at the Woodmere Art Museum featuring the visiting artists drew a large audience of SCH families and the larger community. At the Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind competition this past spring, SCH Upper School’s team won the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award for exceptional creativity, either through some aspect of their problem solution, or an extraordinary idea beyond the problem solution. Ranatra Fusca is the term for a classification of water insect. Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that challenges students to use their knowledge and ideas to creatively solve a problem. The SCH team took on Problem 2: Emoji, Speak for Yourself, in which they had to create a performance based on an emoji demonstrating different functions like growing, turning into a team member, or changing into a different emoji. Performances had to include a choreographed dance, a technical representation of texting, and sounds to enhance the performance. No spoken language was allowed.

As the girls waited for the session to begin, the room began to fill with droves of participants. They soon realized they were to be the presenters for the opening session of the entire conference.

Despite their apprehension at having to speak in front of 400 science and engineering teachers, they pretty quickly relaxed into their 90-minute presentation, winning over the audience with their thoughtful analysis, articulate responses, and insight on topics ranging from dealing with setbacks to managing a team that doesn't always agree. The crowd was so impressed that, after the session, lines of teachers waited to compliment them, ask further questions, and even get their pictures. Several members of the audience stood up during the Q&A session and began their questions with expressions of admiration and disbelief that the girls were only in middle school.

This summer, two rising SCH 8th grade girls spoke to 400+ scientists at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Gabby Adams and Ryanne Leslie spoke at the 7th Annual STEM Conference hosted by the National Science Teachers Association (NCTA) about their experience in the eCYBERMISSION competition, a web-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics competition for students in grades 6 through 9. SCH has had a lot of success with this competition, taking 1st and 2nd place

SCH students learn the skills of presentation across the curriculum, beginning as early as Pre-Kindergarten. They are regularly asked to present in front of schoolmates, parents, and larger audiences. Through these experiences, they develop the confidence and skill to express their ideas clearly and persuasively.

CAMPUSNEWS sch community makes a night to remember Fête for our Future, which took place on Saturday, April 21, at URBN in the Navy Yard, was our largest-ever Parents Association event with nearly 600 parents, faculty, alumni, and friends in attendance to support the McCausland Lower School & Commons. We are grateful to SCH board chair Dick Hayne, the staff of URBN, and Vetri/Cafe 543 for helping to plan and execute a spectacular event. The Young Alumnus Award recognizes the achievements of an alumnus who has graduated within the past 20 years. It honors his excellence in his career or in service to the school.

Honorary Alumni The Alumnus of the Year Award, intended to be given annually, is awarded to an alumnus for outstanding service to the association or to CHA. While not restricted to contributions made during the year in which it is given, that was its original intent, with exceptions made on occasion to recognize service and contributions to the school over a period of time.

Traversing Today’s College Admissions Landscape

THIS PAST JUNE, I SPENT THREE DAYS WITH 18 OF THE MOST TALENTED LEADERS currently working in the world of college admissions. I was invited to attend the Southern Consortium School Summit in Amelia Island, Florida. Along with 14 other college counselors from the independent, public, and charter school world, deans of admission from some of America’s most well-known institutions—including Davidson College, Emory University, Rice University, University of Richmond, Tulane University, Vanderbilt University, Washington & Lee University, and Wake Forest University (to name just a few)—shared with us the biggest challenges they grapple with in their positions. I pass these on to you, readers, to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the world of college admissions today.

What keeps top college and university leaders up at night: •

•

•

pressure from college presidents to increase their institution’s standing in such publications as the US News and World Report the impossible task of managing and “holistically” reading up to 35,000 applications with limited staff (and limited financial aid budgets)

My colleagues and I on the secondary school side of the desk were also able to express our concerns to these deans. Most prominent among these were: •

the seemingly never-ending increase in applications at just about every selective college in the United States

•

the continued focus on Early Decision at many institutions

•

the creeping feeling that our students are just pawns in a larger game of yield management, analytics, and “box checking”

trying to genuinely increase access for low-income and underrepresented students

While no magic solutions were established during those 72 hours, I did come away with six key points that I think students and parents about to enter the college process will find helpful:

1

Real People Actually Make Admissions Decisions.

The large majority of admissions professionals I have encountered in my 22 years of working in admissions and college counseling are good people who truly care about kids.

These admissions professionals—with long and fancy titles such as vice president for enrollment management, executive director of enrollment services, and the more traditional dean of admissions—are also parents of current teenagers entering the college process and young adults who have recently been through the process. They want to admit deserving students with compelling stories to their colleges, even if they don’t have the flashiest academic profiles. These folks are doing everything they can to provide accurate information to applicants, reduce the hype surrounding the college process, and establish an application reading system that ensures all students are read fairly.

However, the reality is that more students are applying to more colleges than ever before. Admissions professionals at the most selective schools in the country see thousands of students in their applicant pools with eye-popping academic credentials, compelling stories, and genuine leadership. Ultimately, even the nicest and kindest of admissions professionals do occasionally need to lean on metrics (GPAs, test scores) to help them make these difficult decisions. While there are always exceptions, for

the most part, if a student applies to a highly selective school in the current admissions climate and doesn’t meet or exceed the academic metrics desired by those institutions (GPA, rigor of courses, standardized testing ranges), that student has almost no chance for admission. In fact, most students who do meet or exceed these academic metrics still aren’t admitted to these institutions. In 2018, there is little forgiveness for students who are just off the mark at these types of hyper-selective colleges.

The Money Matters.

While many students and parents understand the need to create a college list that includes at least a few “likely” options in terms of admission, it is critical for students to also have schools included in their list that are “financial likely” options as well. Ideally, parents and students need to have an honest conversation about their family’s financial situation as it relates to financing higher education before the student starts applying to colleges. Is there a specific amount of money that the family feels they can spend for college? How much debt would a student be comfortable taking on and how much would he/she have to clear in salary a month to pay back the loan taken out?

Are all of a student’s top choice schools going to be the more expensive options? Having a few colleges on your list that are likely in terms of admissions means nothing if these institutions are not financially realistic for your family.

She worked for seven years as an English instructor, dorm parent, and coach at Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, before becoming a college counselor at Emma Willard in 2004. Be Careful Applying to a School-Within-a-School.

Have you ever dreamed of dancing for a major ballet company?

Being a titan of industry? Designing and building the next industrial robot as an engineer? If so, guess what? So have thousands of other high school students! It is critical to understand that at some institutions, the specific major or program/school-within-a-school (business, engineering, performing arts) a student applies to can greatly impact their chances for admission.

More Applications Does Not Equal More Options!

It is almost impossible to apply well to dozens of highly selective colleges. I have worked with many students over the years who embrace the “throw the mud and hope some will stick” philosophy to this process, and rarely does it turn out the way they hope. Because of how incredibly selective many of the most popular universities in the United States have become (at least 40 institutions admitted applicants at a rate of 20% or lower for the Class of 2022, and 15 of these schools had below a 10% admit rate), admissions offices are scrutinizing an applicant’s “fit” for their institution more now than ever before. Therefore, in addition to having the academic profile desired and flashing some sort of non-academic “punch,” successful applicants must also be able to answer institution-specific essays with authenticity if they have any chance for admission. The majority of the most selective colleges and universities in the country require an applicant to complete one or more short, institutionspecific essays (also known as supplemental essays) in addition to the general Common Application personal statement.

Admissions officers are looking to see if a student can clearly articulate why he/she is excited about a college, is a good academic match for that college, and actually understands the culture of that school.

I have yet to meet a student who was able to write more than eight or nine supplemental essays that were truly impactful and genuine. Busy students don’t have (and probably shouldn’t have) enough time to craft 16 different and well-done schoolspecific essays. And remember: seasoned admissions officers have read thousands of essays; they can tell when an applicant is mailing it in. The copy-and-paste strategy with supplements (How different can Wake Forest and Tulane really be??? A lot!!) does not work in 2018.

Students need to do their research on the colleges they are most excited about, and think about how they fit in academically at that school. If their fit is centered on a highly selective program or school within that school, they need to understand that their actual chances for admission are probably even lower than the overall admit rate published by the university. A lot lower! Typically, students applying to engineering or business programs—or to some sort of performing arts major—face tougher odds than those applying to other programs within an institution. Many of these programs and majors cap their admissions offers, and competition is fierce for these spots.

There are some scenarios in which applying to a school-withina-school could actually improve an applicant’s chances for admissions (a strong male applicant to a nursing program for example), but it is difficult year to year to know which programs might be more favorable to an applicant.

Early Birds Get Their (First Choice) Worm.

When looking at the national landscape, it is clear that highly selective private institutions are filling an ever-growing proportion of their incoming classes with binding Early Decision (ED) applicants (at many places 50% or more of the total class may be filled by ED applicants!). Students applying to one of these “ED happy” schools in the Regular Decision (RD) cycle are therefore finding their chances for admission to those schools are greatly diminished. In many cases, a student’s real chance for admission in Regular Decision at these types of schools is closer to 1-2%, no matter their academic record.

The harsh reality is that students who not only want a highly selective college with an ED program, but are also highly qualified for such an institution, cannot afford not to apply via Early Decision. That is, despite impressive qualifications, students who do not apply in ED are unlikely to be admitted in RD. Perhaps even more troubling for students and their families is the number of institutions that have recently added an ED process. Popular schools like Tulane, Villanova, Drexel, and Northeastern (just to name a few) have added an ED cycle in the last few years. Students and their parents need to get all of their ducks in a row before making the big decision to submit a binding Early Decision application. But, if your top choice school offers an ED round (it could be ED 1 or ED 2) and you pass it up, the odds are stacked against you in Regular Decision.

Take a deep breath and remember: the United States has the most options for higher education in the world. Big, small, STEM-focused, near a beach, affordable, greek-life-a-plenty, urban—you name it, and there is probably a college or university in America that offers it or does it well. And the exciting news is that many of these colleges admit students at a very high rate. That’s right, a high rate! According to the National Center for Education Statistics, as of 2015 there are 3,011 four-year colleges in the United States. At least 1,168 of these colleges admitted applicants at a 51% or higher rate in 2018.

Just because one institution is more selective than another does not mean that the more selective school is better for you. There are phenomenally talented and caring faculty at thousands of colleges across the United States. Ever heard of Juniata College? The College of Wooster? Centre College? Were Dayton University, Clark University, or Willamette University on your radar? Maybe not, but perhaps they should be. These are just six examples of institutions that aren’t the most selective or highly ranked, but all offer world-class educations, great facilities, and a life-changing four years for students.

Springside Athletes Honored in Refurbished Hall of Fame

On April 27, at the 94th annual Blue & Blue Day, members of the SCH community, along with friends and family, came together to honor Middle School history teacher and crosscountry/track coach Paul Hines h’03 by dedicating the SCH track in his honor.

Paul has led the Blue Devils cross-country and track programs since 1981. He was recently inducted into the Philadelphia Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding coaching career.

SCH junior Rex Leininger, the inspiration and committee chair leading the dedication effort, shared the following remarks as part of the dedication ceremony. “He has taught his students through the lens of honesty, courage, loyalty, integrity, and sportsmanship. Thank you, Mr. Hines, for leading thousands of kids on the right path in life. Thank you, Mr. Hines, for molding and inspiring countless athletes. Thank you, Mr. Hines, for dedicating nearly 40 years of your life to the constant improvement of this family.”

The Lois Fernley McNeil Class of 1936 Hall of Fame was established in 1991 to honor a Springside alumna or honorary alumna, coach, or team who has made an outstanding contribution to athletics while at Springside. In the spring, the Hall of Fame was moved to a more prominent location in the Vare Field House. This space was refurbished through the generosity of the Springside Class of 1967 in honor of their 50th reunion and in loving memory of Ann Wieland Spaeth ’54.

With the refurbishment of the Lois Fernley McNeil Class of 1936 Hall of Fame, a new generation of athletes will learn from those who achieved greatness before them.

Established in early 2018, the Blue Devils Club is a joint initiative between the Athletic and Development Offices, the head of school, and the Parents Association. The Blue Devils Club provides a vehicle for alumni of Springside, CHA, and SCH, as well as SCH parents and friends to support the school’s athletic program. SCH Athletic Directors’ Award Winner, Senior Grace Rorke In May, Grace Rorke ’18 was selected as SCH Academy’s 2018 Athletic Directors’ Award recipient.

Each year, the Inter-Ac athletic directors present the award to a female student-athlete at each of the Inter-Ac schools. Grace was a tri-varsity athlete playing soccer, squash, and lacrosse. She was captain of both the soccer and lacrosse teams and helped lead the soccer team to the school’s first-ever PAISAA Championship. Grace is attending Dartmouth College where she plays on the soccer team.

BREAKING BREAD, AND DIVERSITY BARRIERS, TOGETHER Building a Stronger School Community Centered Around Our School Values

In 2017, courage, resilience, integrity, diversity, and thoughtfulness were officially adopted as the school core values—the outcome of a yearlong series of community conversations culminating in a Clarity Summit, organized

by Head of School Steve Druggan and involving students, faculty, parents, and alumni in exercises to help define the values and mission of the school. In a follow-up to this watershed community event, the school hosted a three-part panel series last spring to explore how we might incorporate these values into our work, school, and home life.

A series of panels, entitled VALUEd CONVERSATIONS, was envisioned as a way to keep the positive momentum of the Clarity Summit going by providing a forum where different voices, ideas, and perspectives within the community could be shared and heard. “We were looking for a way to involve the parent community more fully around our mission and values,” explains Will Dunbar, 20182019 chair of the Parents Association’s Diversity Resource Network (DRN), which helped to organize the panel events with Dr. Druggan and the school’s Office of Community Life, Diversity, and Inclusion. “How do we help ourselves better understand each other, how

we communicate differently, and how our backgrounds, ethnic groups, and different religions all work together to create one strong coherent successful community at SCH?”

Dunbar believed that a panel series, rather than a one-time event, would offer opportunities for deeper conversation around “what our values mean and how we can use their definitions to impact our children, both at home and at school.”

The conversations that took place— all of them honest, respectful, and thoughtful—covered a broad range of topics, from how to build resilience and courage in our children and how to teach respect for differences to how to nurture global citizens. As part of each panel, the panelists and audience were asked to reflect on how we might measure our progress in instilling these values.

VALUEd CONVERSATIONS engaged a wide range of speakers, both inside and outside the school community, from religious leaders, authors, and judges to university faculty, business people, and civil servants. “The panelists really

At the Class of 2016 graduation, the acting head of school, Mark Segar, said our job is to expand the circle and get out of the Chestnut Hill bubble. You have to tend your own fire and then make sure everybody is warm.

The mission of the DRN, a part of the SCH Parents Association, is to “advocate for and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in our parent and school community.”

Last year, the DRN hosted or co-hosted several events, including a presentation by Hilary Beard, author of Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life, the VALUEd CONVERSATIONS panels, and a spring social at Jennings House, hosted by Pia and Steve Druggan. This year the DRN plans to expand its offerings, says Will Dunbar, 2018-2019 chair.

“The network is considering another series, maybe more interactive, so that we can have more parent and community participation going forward. We’ll continue with outside community leaders, thought provokers, to help guide our thoughts and agendas.”

At a small, diverse school, students interact with and learn from each other. This is not as common at a larger school where students are more easily able to remain in their comfortable spaces with students who share their views and backgrounds and, therefore, miss out on interacting and learning from those with different views and backgrounds.

Playing games with diversity is a very dangerous thing right now. Emotions are frayed. Everything is so condensed that things fall faster and rise faster than ever before.

If you don’t have a north star and aren’t intentional, then in this call-out culture that we live in, where young people are incredulous about everything, they will point out your blaring faults.

This became my home, and still is! It was always special when I would come back to the Philadelphia area to visit my grandmother. I would contact my Springside classmates and invite them to my grandmother’s house. She would take us to the Union League or the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Or we would just play. I remember going to the Wissahickon Creek and making mud pies.

Libby Sturges I have been a widow since shortly after our last reunion.

I have gone back to what I love doing: teaching and writing. I am giving lectures at Cathedral Village retirement community in Philadelphia on American and French history and serving as co-editor of the CV monthly cultural newsletter (among a lot of other things). Elaine Endres White Kelton As I have aged and listen to younger generations describe their parents and older friends with adjectives and adverbs that demean—”chipper, sharp as a tack”—I have thought about how I wish to be described today and as I collect more birthdays: entrepreneurial, adventuresome, bright, wellread, informed, interested and interesting, timely, current, and a leader today.

Gale Elliot Mulder We are still living in Sunbury, OH, on five acres. Our two children, Ted and Candy, have married wonderful spouses, and each family has two boys. Ted and family are in Hixson,TN, outside of Chattanooga. Candy and family are in Powell, OH. I can’t believe it has been 60 years since we walked across the “stage” for that “piece of paper.”

Nancy Lamont Sullivan I have been a teacher all of my adult life, including in Africa and Central America.

I was exposed to many types of cuisine, traveling as a young woman with my family.

I realized early on that many cultures have a traditional nourishing diet that is often different from our own. I went from teaching marine science to promoting health and wellness through eating nutrient-dense, properly prepared foods. I am excited to be able to educate, assist, and empower people in my community to achieve better health through the consumption of a balanced combination of real foods.

I am a certified, nutritional therapy practitioner, and I also am certified as a GAPS (gut and psychology syndrome) practitioner.

Jeanne Borie Tustian I can say I have had a good life, and Springside prepared me well to cope with the choices that have come my way. I have always had an inquiring mind, but had no particular ambition for academic excellence. I would work harder if I had it to do over again. I would choose music lessons instead of dancing class with everyone

Back to School CLASS OF 1957 ALUMNAE ATTEND SCH ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE EVENT FUNDED BY THEIR CLASS Members of Springside’s Class of 1957 join with the cast of The Laramie Project and visiting artists from the Tectonic Theater Project, the group that helped write and produce the original play. The visiting artists worked with the members of Players to help them prepare for the production. Tectonic’s visit was made possible through the support of the Springside Class of 1957 Artist in Residence Fund.

else, because I love singing in my church choir every week. But I suppose I learned important survival social skills. I have had a life centered on my own kids and the kids at the church nursery school for 39 years.

I was the Landon Lower School assistant librarian for 10 years and remain active in lots of ways at our church.

The church has been a major focus of our lives, which began first for me at St. Paul’s and then St. Martin’s. I have also belonged to a garden club and learned so much from that experience. I have taken on the Garden Guild at the church and have made a difference there and in our yard. I love to garden.

Wendy Wister Walcott

I fend off arthritis by ballroom dancing. The dancing is great fun and wonderful for posture and balance, but the performance-related demands of personal looks, dress and grooming are quite foreign to me. I still hate to shop! I hate having someone else do my competition hair and make-up, which, when on, I call my “fright mask.” Yet I still do it, despite the expense. Other people are addicted to other things, like bridge or trading stocks. I dance. While I still can. When not dancing, my husband and I travel to see our three children and their families. All nine grandchildren, ages 2 to 12, are thriving, and for this we are also immensely grateful.

Betty Schuyler Deming Wood I have two children and four grandchildren. My oldest grandchild, Avery, SCH class of 2015, ran across country for the Ulsan Cancer Fund.

My oldest grandson is a student at the University of Pennsylvania and is working at the Historical Society. I am secretary of the Church of The Redeemer and a member of the Board of Trustees. I am past president of the Women’s Committee at the Penn Museum.

Stuart Forer sold his dealership years ago and now has a retirement job helping people understand Medicare.

“I am still a crazy car nut.

Here is a picture of my Jaguar at Lime Rock Park in CT. I race in vintage car races. I am also still an avid skier.”

and go to people’s homes to see the dogs or cats. My husband and I enjoy trap, skeet, sporting clays, and flyfishing together. I also love to bird watch (currently feeding live mealworms to nine bluebirds out back every morning). We have a golden puppy and we are training her for hunting, agility, obedience, and maybe tracking. We also have three cats (I just rescued a 16 yr old!).

Martha Cheston I enjoyed a variety of professions. I thought I would continue to paint after my stint at PAFA but didn’t find a good fit. I introduced cheese sculptures to Bloomingdales, which was a hit on the news and good advertising, but was not interested in working with cheese after that one hot summer week. But it led me to the CEO of Bloomingdale’s and a job as a buyer for their U.S. men’s department.

Restless, I tried Wall Street in a private trading room, then buying and selling gold and silver jewelry, managing and expanding a line of high-end

cheese stores to include baked goods, and wonderful coffees from around the globe, to the point where the Zabar brothers came to see what we were doing on the east side. Gratifying and fattening!

Time to move on to freelance editorial work with Hearst.

Interesting working with some of the best photographers and designers, and interviewing celebrities. There was an inexhaustible world of art, music, opera, theater, and fascinating people. Every week one would encounter another extraordinary (and often famous) person just in transit. Or running around Central Park and often finding oneself invited to their homes or parties. What a city. When I returned to Philadelphia, I enjoyed volunteering for Little Brother’s, helping to provide for the elderly without family to support them. (I was delighted to find a “grandmother” who lived to 105 and shared memories with me of growing up with parents in slavery. Yet she was current, hip, and an inspiration and bedrock in a tough community.) I also loved cooking for AIDS patients and working at Jefferson Hospital

as a volunteer. I then started a dog-sitting business which has lasted 17 years and has helped me get many dogs adopted or fostered.

A. Lee Conrad has been retired since 2018. He’s using rowing and paddling boats in Florida and singing occasionally.

Pat Hyndman Doggett I have been a teacher for almost 37 years. I worked at an independent school for 20 years and for the last 17, I have been the literacy specialist at a public PreK–6th grade elementary school in West Newbury, MA. As a volunteer in the Caner Support Programs at Boston Medical Center, I lead a knitting group for patients. I also serve on the Patient Family Affairs Committee at BMC. I provide childcare at the Jeanie Geiger Crisis Center, which serves victims of domestic violence. Twice each month, I volunteer as a gallery guide at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. Probably my most curious volunteer commitment was as the spouse of the head of school.

was the head of school at the Governor’s Academy, we opened our home to students and faculty on Saturday nights during the school year.

I shopped and the students cooked, visited, played games and relaxed. We also had families and faculty members in for dinners and meetings.

Our boys grew up sharing their home with 350 other students.

Margot Kurtz Forbes I have always made my living and life around singing and playing the guitar. I’ve had the great fortune to do what I love and support myself, both in Britain and here.

Lisa Webb Howe For the last 16 years, I have owned a women’s boutique in Chestnut Hill, with a longtime friend, Georgia Doyle. It started as a handmade co-op with 10 partners, and has morphed into mostly clothing with accessories, jewelry and gifts. I also enter the Philadelphia and Newport Flower Shows in a category called Botanical Arts.

Basically it is plant material manipulated and painted to look exactly like jewelry!!!!!!!

Crazy but fun.

Lea Manly-Power Kusner I still work as a part-time Kindergarten teacher and a full-time administrator in girls athletics in field hockey and lacrosse, and I sing in my church choir every Sunday. We toured England last summer leading Evensongs in the midlands. I volunteer with atrisk youth and also at a local

women’s prison, play weekly bridge, on a trivia team at the local pub, and in a book club.

Nina Smith Metzler I have been fortunate to have had various professions in my life. Being so interested in science, I started as an EKG technician, moving into becoming a domestic engineer in the 70s. At that time it allowed me to teach dancing class and volunteer for the Main Street Fair. Eventually, I moved on to selling life and health insurance. Ultimately, I landed the career I had always wanted, which was becoming a nurse. I graduated from Miami University of Ohio at the age of 45 amazingly enough with a magna cum laude BSN degree. AIDS and hospice were my passion and fulfilled my professional career.

Phoebe Rolin Mitchell In 1968 I listed my ambition as “writer.” It took me 40 years to get there, but I eventually became a journalist, writing and editing for a daily paper.

That job was among the most challenging and rewarding adventures I’ve ever had.

Alice Churchman Muehlhof I was a computer programmer and then a systems analyst working with a company that did computerized typesetting for publishers like Prentice Hall. I went back to school and received my master’s in applied statistics at age 55.

I then became a statistical programmer. I also taught college-level statistics classes.

Guillermina de Lasa y Payarola At the age of 19, at the same time that I was studying at the University of Bahia Blanca, I started to be a language teacher. I married at the age of 22 and some time later, as a mother of three, I graduated with honors. I continued to teach for 25 years, and when I retired, I went for a second university career to be an English translator. I graduated with honors again and now I am a freelance translator and granny of nine lovely grandchildren. My experience as a Springside exchange student was unforgettable!

Ann Wharton Phillips I retired eight months ago.

I first worked in the public health/nonprofit world before and after graduate school and then spent 29 very good years at Witt/Kieffer, an executive search firm that does terrific work for its domestic and international clients in the fields of healthcare, higher education, life sciences, and nonprofits. As a partner, I worked directly for a number of years with organizations and companies to find new leadership, managed our eastern region, and over the last seven years had the pleasure of serving as board chair during a period of significant growth and change.

Currently, my husband and I are goofing off, traveling the world and the U.S., spending time with our adult children in LA, hanging out in New York City, and gardening at our house on Great Wass Island in Maine for five-six months a year (our only residence for the moment). I expect to be engaged with the mid-term elections this coming year

and to eventually find some meaningful volunteer work, possibly using my healthcare background.

Jack Platt Although health issues encumber me a bit, my wife and I travel as much as we can. This fall, I am planning to participate in a five-day, 300-mile Bike Ride in Israel. It will be the tenth time that I’ve participlated, four times with my sons.

Beth Webster Purvis

After our last child went to first grade, I taught four-year nursery for two years. I then started working at Bryn Mawr School, a private all-girls school, in development. I worked for 16 years at various times in Annual Fund, Parents and Alumnae Associations, and Special Events. I am now retired and a master gardener.

I also volunteer at GBMC hospital and the Naples Botanical Garden in the winter. Hands down, I am most proud of our children.

They have each grown into responsible, fun adults and are now the parents of our eight grandchildren. I feel very lucky to still be married (almost 48 years) to my best friend.

Ellen Simons I retired from Citibank in 2013 as a director and senior credit officer after over 35 years in banking. Since retiring, I have volunteered at a food pantry and for the Hillary Clinton campaign. Bob and I are now both working to help our daughter-in-law, Debbie, in her campaign to get elected to the House of Representatives for the seat representing Florida’s 26th district.

The article focuses on an academic paper Nicholas coauthored as well as the overall project. The piece contains several quotes by Nicholas as well as a photograph of the entire team.

2014 Karah Barrist graduated from Bucknell University in May. She is fullfilling her music passion and is a music teacher at an elementary school in the suburban Philadelphia area.

Madison Aslansan, a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student, was named to the All-Liberty League First Team for her efforts on the lacrosse field.

Hannah Clark participated in a summer project in Sierra Leone called Periods for Peace, which is focused on teaching reproductive health and menstrual hygiene management to women. To

carry out the project, she and another student received a $10,000 Shelby Davis Projects for Peace grant after being nominated by their school, Case Western Reserve University. In addition, they received a $5,000 grant from the university’s Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equal Opportunity. Hannah and her colleague are partnering with Girl Up Vine Club in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to run a summer camp for middle school girls that emphasizes reproductive health, menstrual hygiene management, and genderbased violence. They are also traveling to the Northern Provinces of Sierra Leone to run workshops for middle and high school girls focused on the same topics.

FORMER FACULTY & ADMINISTRATORS After more than 55 years in independent school education, former Chestnut Hill Academy headmaster Gerrit M. Keator h’79 has retired. Educated

at Andover and Yale, Gerrit started teaching and coaching at the Greenwich Country Day School in 1962. In 1965, he and his young family moved to the Lolani School in Honolulu where he ultimately became assistant headmaster before being named CHA headmaster in 1972. After leaving that post in 1979, he spent the next 10 years in Connecticut as Pomfret School’s headmaster. This was followed by 11 years as president of the International College in Beirut, Lebanon, a responsibility he handled largely in absentia due to the war in the region at that time.

From 2000 to 2018, Gerrit served as Andover’s major and principal gift officer, raising millions of dollars from London to Hong Kong and virtually every place in between. Gerrit and Marnie Keator have returned to Hawaii, settling in Kamuela on the Big Island of Hawaii.

From former CHA faculty member Dave Hoyler: “I was delighted when I discovered an issue of SCHool in my mailbox. CHA was my first full-time job: I began in January 1969 after a science teacher had been dismissed during Christmas, and the school was, I guess, under duress to fill the position ASAP, even if the school was a bit dubious of my greenhorn status. I had just finished the coursework for my master’s degree at UPenn, and was working on my thesis. This turned out to be a propitious situation in, I believe, a positive symbiotic way. I continued at CHA until June 1980, when I departed to become the director of Middle and Upper Schools at Portledge School on Long Island, from which I retired in 2010. During my tenure at CHA, I began as a middle school science teacher, which back then was Forms I–III (grades 7-9). Subsequently I focused more on senior school science (which then became Forms III-VI) with my prime focus on biology, and to a lesser extent on IPS

and ESCP earth science. I served as Science Department chair from 1972-80 and also as director of financial aid in 1979-80. Also, right from their MS years, I was advisor to the Class of ’75. Here’s an excerpt of what I wrote the class on the advent of their 25th anniversary, saying in part,’…CHA gave me my start in teaching. (I was only 23 years old then, but still “Sir” to my students!). … CHA was both my proving grounds and my launching pad. As I reflect back now, I recall with pleasure and appreciation my own experiences starting out as a teacher at CHA and the many mentors who shaped and molded me. These mentors ranged in age from 11 to 18 years olds (you men, as students over the years) right through my colleagues, the administrators, veteran faculty … parents of students, board members, and even some alumni who gave me a sense of the school’s history and traditions. …’ These were truly formative years for me.

I look back fondly on them and I read with eagerness the articles in SCHool.”

FORMER TRUSTEES

In May 2018, Ludlow Miller and Janie Parker retired from the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Board of Trustees.

Ludlow and Janie have served both Springside School and now Springside Chestnut Hill Academy as trustees and then as trustee emeriti since 1988 and 1980 respectively. Ludlow chaired the Development Committee and also served on the Finance and Assets Committee. For 30 years, Ludlow shared his wise counsel, financial and fundraising expertise, enthusiasm, and keen leadership. The Springside Alumnae Association awarded him the Distinguished Service Award in 2014 for his tireless work in our community to

provide an enhanced crew program and a fruitful educational leadership program with Outward Bound. Ludlow and his wife, Babbie Baldwin Miller ’57, are the proud parents of Laura Miller Bland ’83, Elizabeth Miller Keville ’86, and Clark Miller ’91.

Janie chaired the Nominating Committee and also served on the Governance Committee while on the board. She also held the position of president of the Parents Association from 1978-1980. In 2015, she was awarded the Corning Pearson Service Award in honor of her extraordinary service, commitment, and dedication to the values and mission of the school. Janie’s ties to the school run deep. Her mother-in-law, Anne Wetherill Parker, was in the Springside Class of 1924, her daughter, Pamela Parker Nauen, was in the Springside Class of 1985, and her granddaughters, Anna ’19 and Samantha ’27 Nauen, also attended SCH.

Nunn Runs In August, Avery Nunn ’15 completed a 49-day, 4,500-mile journey across the country to raise money for the Ulman Cancer Fund. The runners began their journey in San Francisco and completed it in Boston. Avery came in first among her team in the final 20-mile dash to the finish. Each morning before the continuation of the run, she and her team would dedicate that day’s run to someone they knew affected by cancer. They then wrote that person’s name on their calves and wrists as a reminder that although there was a big day ahead of them, they were running for something bigger. In her senior year at Lafayette College, Avery runs Division I track and field and cross-country.

Lion Neely ‘02, #33, is scoring the winning touchdown against Springfield HS, our arch rival in that era, in a back-and-forth epic game on Homecoming in October 2001. This TD put the Blue Devils ahead 36-35 with 12 seconds left in the game! It also clinched the first league championship for the Devils since 1994. And it was the 9th overall league championship for Coach Jack Plunkett. The scene at the field that day and at this moment was electric! Always great to see this picture and relive it!”
