FROM the Head of School Dear SCH Community,

As I reflect on my first full year at this special school, there is one thing that stands out most distinctly: community. The thing we do best is create community. The strength of SCH derives above all else from the quality of its people. When I think of this community, I also think of a place of purpose that adapts, a place where anything is possible. And the affection they have for this school is clear and present. At SCH, people feel attached to a shared history and excitement for what is to come. Moreover, there are profound and deep connections everywhere. Quite simply, this is our superpower. This report of giftsβ€”and the many names listed on the pages hereinβ€”is a powerful testament to this superpower. Your dedication to this school and its students will be felt far into the future. You are helping us to redefine learning and discovery in a global context and set new standards in teaching and learning, community, and belonging. I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for the incredible generosity of the SCH family. Your investment in our mission will continue to bear fruit, empowering generations to come and instilling in them the values of integrity, courage, thoughtfulness, diversity, and resilience. With warmest regards and heartfelt thanks, Dr. Delvin Dinkins

Integrity | Courage | Diversity | Thoughtfulness | Resilience

Diversity at SCH Diversity is a condition of excellence. Embracing a diverse, inclusive community is fundamental to providing the most rigorous, globally competitive education. At SCH, we aim to engage, understand, and celebrate the broad range of human experiences and perspectives. Through our curriculum, professional development, community-centered events, and daily interactions, we are committed to cultivating empathy and inclusion, and to nurturing the authentic expression of every individual.

Coming together to Make a difference PROGRESS REPORT

Campaign for the Commons

GOAL $6 Million Raised $3.4 million

The third and final phase of SCH’s Campus Master Plan has begun! Improvements were made to the Commons, the multipurpose community hub in the historic heart of the Upper School campus, this past summer. The Commons has served many purposes through the years (the hanging track in the gym is long gone and performances moved to The Rec decades ago!), but the current project provides more space and versatility for SCH’s growing student body. This piece of the Campus Master Plan, which wrapped up in September, included enlarging the interior gathering space on the first level of the Commons, building a new fitness and wellness center in the Woodward Gym, and transforming part of the fitness center in the Vare Field House into a dedicated wrestling space. Upper School students are enjoying the improved spaces, which allow them to gather, dine and socialize together, and provide them with the fitness and wellness resources they need to achieve their athletic and wellness goals. There are new areas to study, read, eat, train, compete, perform, relax with friends, and hold meetings and eventsβ€”both inside and out.

Features of the second phase of the Commons Plan include:

β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’ β€’

Upgraded athletic training rooms Upgraded squash facilities Expanded dining hall seating Improved locker rooms Redesigned exterior courtyard and student space

β€œWe’re thrilled to see the support and enthusiasm that our community has shown the Campaign for the Commons,” said campaign co-chairs Jess Hayne and Ed McDevitt. β€œThe impact this project will have on our community will be felt for decades to come.”

PROGRESS REPORT

Restore the Rec GOAL $6.85 Million

Raised $5 million

We are thrilled to announce significant progress in the Restore The Rec campaign! Thanks to the incredible support of our donors and the community, we have reached a major milestone with the project now being almost 75 percent fully funded. This achievement is a testament to the shared commitment to preserving The Rec as a cherished part of our school’s history. As we continue toward our fundraising goal, we are excited to offer a unique opportunity for everyone to become a lasting part of The Rec’s legacy. You can now dedicate a seat in the renovated facility and immortalize your name or a loved one’s on a plaque. To learn more about this opportunity and how you can Take a Seat, please visit www.sch.org/take-a-seat. In the spring, the community came together to enjoy an extraordinary production of β€œInto the Woods,” presented by Players. The exceptional talent of our performers, the dedication of our backstage crew, and the enthusiastic support of our audience made this event a resounding success. It served as a reminder of the importance of renovating The Rec, ensuring it remains a state-of-the-art venue capable of hosting amazing performances. With the continued support and generosity of our donors, we are confident that we will reach our fundraising goal soon. The renovation plans for The Rec are well underway, including the successful replacement of the roof and windows. As we look forward to the next stages of the project, which involve expanded audience seating, upgraded sound and lighting systems, increased storage space, and more, we are filled with anticipation for the enhanced opportunities these improvements will bring to our school’s performing arts community. We extend our deepest gratitude to our lead donor, Bruce Whelihan from the CHA Class of 1960, for his incredible contribution and unwavering support. We also want to thank each and every one of the almost 400 donors who have shown their dedication to this important project. As we move forward, we invite all members of our community to participate in the campaign. Your support, whether through donations, dedicating a seat, or spreading the word, will make a lasting impact on the future of The Rec and the experiences it will provide for generations of students and performers. Together, we can ensure that The Rec remains a vibrant and treasured part of our school’s history.

SPECIAL PROJECT

Creating Opportunities for Crew

Keep an eye out for the fastest fleet on the Schuylkill River! Our girls and boys crew teams will be rowing in new carbon Filippi F31s quads with new oars as they begin their season. And coaches and volunteers will be riding in style in like-new, refurbished launches. Thanks to a comprehensive campaign, which included Athletic Giving Day and the erg-a-thon on campus, SCH raised more than $100,000 for new crew equipment. One of the new quads will be named in memory of William Connor Newbold, Class of 2017 (pictured above). β€œObtaining new equipment begins the implementation of a replenishment strategy that was established a few years ago,” says boys coach Chris McElroy. β€œIn addition to refurbishing our 20-year-old launches, acquiring new, right-sized boats will enable SCH to operate on a comparative plane with our competitors and allows SCH to embrace technological and structural innovations (carbon is better than aluminum!).”

Divisional Highlights LOWER SCHOOL Rolling out a New Bike Program at SCH Our youngest Lower Schoolers are now able to β€œroll” into their bike riding years thanks to our PE teachers and All Kids Bike, a program β€œon a mission to teach every child in America to ride a bike in kindergarten.” The program, which comes with a curriculum designed to make balance and riding easier, trains educators to teach students to ride on Strider 14x bikes. As riders progress, the bikes can be transformed into pedal bikes with a conversion kit. Kindergarten girls were the first to learn how to stride as part of their β€œbrave, strong girls” unit. The program aims to bring families and friends together through physical activity. Books and Stripes Much-loved traditions returned (in person) to Lower School this year, including Literature Study for girls and Stripe Day for boys. More than 150 girls at SCH took a deep dive into a book called Bob by Wendy Mass and Newbery Award-winning author Rebecca Stead during Literature Study, a signature three-day event at the end of March. Stead spoke to the girls and visited classrooms to meet girls one on one. The Lower School boys participated in Stripe Day where they celebrated the SCH values β€” courage, diversity, thoughtfulness, and resilience β€” represented on their uniforms. Reducing Plastic Waste One Sandwich Bag at a Time Fourth-grade CEL students got to work last November, learning about and implementing sustainable solutions to combat the plastic pollution problem. They conducted surveys with their peers, and designed and sewed their own reusable sandwich wraps. In addition, they made waste management icons for the Lower School cafeteria. Their hard work culminated in a 100 percent single-use plastic-free lunch.

SERVICE at SCH Neighbors Helping Neighbors: MLK Day Morning of Service at SCH Over 400 eager student, parent, and faculty volunteers joined forces on MLK Day to celebrate and support our greater Philadelphia community. Students, grades Pre-K through 12th, began the day with keynote speaker A’Dorian Murray-Thomas, the founder and CEO of She Wins Inc. Students and volunteers then participated in various types of community service which benefited local nonprofits and service organizations.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Celebrating Human Rights Day with Middle School CEL students CEL 8th grade Digital Publishing students created websites, children’s books, and print/ digital games to educate others about the core rights enshrined in the UDHR and the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. The projects include a picture book, board game, website, and graphic interpretation of the UDHR. These student projects have the potential to reach countless others which (no coincidence!) is a goal of a campaign promoting and recognizing the Declaration’s 75th anniversary in 2022-2023. Middle School Engineering Students Explore Impact of Climate Change This year, our 7th grade Introduction to Engineering students worked in small teams to imagine, design, and build cities of the future, answering the question: How can future cities adapt to climate change? Teams have built scale models of their city according to their chosen climate issue and a real-life place that might be impacted by that issue. And after months of work, they’ve built: a floating city with an aquaponic system, communal pods, and an oyster reef; a city that uses carbon sequestration and wind turbines; and one that focuses on biophilic design, amoung others. Service Project: Students Rise Against Hunger SCH 5th graders packaged 10,000 meals in two hours with an organization called Rise Against Hunger whose model aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets help to β€œremote, last-mile communities within hunger pockets designated β€˜serious’ or higher on the Global Hunger Index.” SCHers learned that each box that they packaged had the potential to feed an individual for an entire year. UPPER SCHOOL Robotics Celebrates 20th Anniversary and a Great Season SCH Robotics students, who are celebrating the program’s 20year anniversary this year, again qualified for the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston, Texas. The team was one of only 10 percent of high school teams that qualified to compete at β€œChamps.” Earlier in the season, student Devin Gibson was awarded the prestigious FIRST Dean’s list award at the HatboroHorsham district competition. Art Exhibition and Benefit for the Shamsa Village Orphanage in Afghanistan There are approximately 6,800 miles between Philadelphia and Kabul. Hirmand Azimi ’23 aimed to bridge that geographic chasm with his exhibition and benefit in the school’s Barbara Crawford Gallery. The exhibit raised awareness of, and more than $5,000 for, the Kabul-based nonprofit, Shamsa Children’s Village, by showcasing art by Kabul-based artist Ghulam Nabi, portraits by photographer Massoud Etemadi and photos by the Shamsa Children’s Village youths, taken as part of their art therapy program. The Shamsa Village in Kabul unites and supports single mothers with orphaned and abandoned children.

DΓ©couvrir L’histoire: The Story of BΓ©lizaire SCH French students learned about Louisiana Creole history and culture, American history and culture, art history, and French in the U.S. by studying a restored painting. In 1837, a wealthy German merchant in New Orleans commissioned a portrait of his three children and a fourth β€œchild,” the family’s 15-year-old enslaved domestic named BΓ©lizaire. While in the hands of the Frey family’s descendants, likely post-Civil War, BΓ©lizaire likeness was completely painted over. The fascinating story of this original painting, and its subsequent handlingβ€”both the covering and uncovering of BΓ©lizaireβ€”has been a yearlong focus of teacher Stephanie Kasten’s French students. One student’s takeaway: β€œThis is the evolution of racism. There’s always a story behind what you see; that which is important is invisible to the eye.”

ATHLETICS at SCH Girls Soccer Wins Big

Track and Field Champions

The 2022-2023 girls soccer team won the PAISAA championship 1-0 with an overall record of 19-1-3. Abby Kenkelen ’23 scored the winning goal with an assist from Lisa McIntyre β€˜23 and Alex Reilly β€˜24. In four years, the seniors never lost an Inter-Ac game.

Darrion Rascoe ’23 (discus), Stefon Dodoo ’25 (800m) & Tony Hicks ’25 (110h) were PAISAA Champions, and Dodoo was 2nd in the 800m representing SCH at New Balance Nationals.

ARTS at SCH Artists, Authors, and Scientists Inspire and Create This past spring, students heard from several inspiring artists, authors, and scientists. The visits, which included master classes in jazz, small group composing sessions, hands-on experiments on climate change, book signings, and lectures, were made possible by endowed funds that have a long history of supporting guests to enrich the student experience at SCH. β€’ Class of 1954 Composition Workshop Fund Recipients: AyinkΓ© Feit P’33, singer/songwriter, and Marcus Bryant, producer/writer β€’ Class of 1957 Artist in Residence: Kevin Snipes, artist, ceramics and drawing β€’ Dempsey Writer in Residence: Jerry Craft, author of award-winning graphic novels, including New Kid β€’ Jamie Bell β€˜78 Music Fund Artist: Hailey Brinnel, jazz musician In addition, the Barbara Crawford Gallery displayed the work of Dawn Kramlich, who made visits to each division to demonstrate encaustic painting and the power of the text image relationship.

The Heritage Society was established at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy to honor those very special alumni, parents, and friends who have included the school in their estate planning. These gifts provide important benefits to you and SCH Academy, including the potential for increased income, significant tax relief, and the opportunity to direct your support to a particular area of interest. Making a legacy gift also involves a strong sense of pride and deep satisfaction in knowing that you are making a very real difference in SCH Academy’s future. Through a planned gift, Heritage Society members ensure the future of the school as well as: β€’ Honor SCH faculty members β€’ Support SCH students β€’ Preserve our beautiful 62-acre campus in the Wissahickon watershed β€’ Enhance faculty salaries β€’ Support program development

EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT TAX CREDIT PROGRAM (EITC) & OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP TAX CREDIT PROGRAM (OSTC) The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs allow both Pennsylvania taxpayers and Pennsylvania business owners to support independent schools, like SCH, instead of directing their tax dollars to Harrisburg. This year, our community came together to give back over $1.6 million in tuition assistance through the EITC and OSTC programs. To learn more about how to use your Pennsylvania taxes to make a gift to SCH, please contact Brooke Mattingly at bmattingly@sch.org.
