Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, verehrte Kunden, liebe Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter,

Dear Sir or Madam, dear Customers, dear Colleagues,

ein turbulentes Jahr 2012 liegt hinter uns und dieses Jahr hat wie kein anderes einen wechselhaften Verlauf genommen. Die konjunkturelle Entwicklung in den ersten fünf Monaten war auf Wachstum getrimmt, das sich im Laufe der Sommerzeit deutlich abschwächte, so dass wir zum Jahresende von einem konjunkturellen Abschwung sprechen müssen.

At national level, a generally turbulent year lies behind us – chequered unlike many before it. While the first five months were oriented towards economic growth, summer saw developments weakening and now at the year’s end, we even hear talk of an economic downturn.

Dennoch hat das Unternehmen im Zuge der Wachstumsoffensive „KTR 400“ strukturelle Veränderungen realisiert, mit denen wir mittel- und langfristig den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg unserer Gesellschaft weiter ausbauen werden. Das von uns installierte Innovationsteam hat die Arbeit im vollen Umfang aufgenommen. Hinsichtlich neuer Produkte sowie neuer Geschäftsaktivitäten zeigen sich erste Erfolge wie Sie dem „Yearbook“ entnehmen können.

Der globale Produktionsverbund und die von uns initiierte globale Fertigungsstrategie „MbK“ (Made by KTR) ist die Plattform für erfolgreiche, lokale Bedienung unserer internationalen Kundschaft. Das KTR-Standard-Produktprogramm hat in diesem Jahr in Bezug auf Wachstum die gesetzten Ziele erreicht, ja sogar punktuell überschritten.

Eine ganze Reihe neuer Produkte wurde bereitgestellt. Details und Informationen über die einzelnen „Erfolgsstorys“ entnehmen Sie bitte unserem „Yearbook“.

Das Yearbook „KTR 360 “ wird zukünftig jeweils zum Jahresende erscheinen.

In spite of these circumstances our company has, as part of our ‘KTR 400’ growth offensive, realized structural changes which in the medium to long term will consolidate our company‘s economic success. The innovation team we appointed is now fully operative. When it comes to new products and business activities, initial successes are coming to light as you can see from our ‘Yearbook’.

Our production network and the global manufacturing strategy ‘MbK’ (Mady by KTR) initiated by us have become the platform for successful local support of our international clientele. This year KTR’s standard product portfolio has reached targeted growth objectives and in part, even exceeded them.

A whole range of new products has been launched in the last 12 months. For details and information on our individual ‘success stories’ please also refer to our Yearbook. I hope you find it both informative and entertaining.

In the future, our Yearbook ‘KTR 360 ’ will be available at the end of the year.

Quality on the move – the world over

Ob in China oder Indien, Brasilien oder USA – das Prädikat „Made in Germany“ steht überall auf der Welt in höchstem Ansehen. Auch im Kupplungsgeschäft.

Doch oft liegt Deutschland zu weit weg, um sich in den schnelllebigen globalen Märkten erfolgreich zu bewegen. Deshalb bauen wir unsere Produktion am liebsten dort auf, wo unsere Kunden sind. Nur in einem Punkt bleiben wir unbeweglich: in der Qualität. Dafür bürgt das Siegel „Made by KTR“. Es ist gewissermaßen die internationale Währung von Made in Germany. Ein Garant für gleichbleibende Qualität – überall auf der Welt!

Whether in China, India, Brazil or the USA – the attribute ‘Made in Germany’ is held in highest esteem everywhere across the globe. This goes for the coupling business too. Germany however is often too distant to be where it is needed in today’s fast-moving global markets.

This has been reason enough for us to establish KTR production plants where our customers are. But when it comes to moving, there is one area where we remain steadfast – quality. And our quality is guaranteed by the ‘Made by KTR’ (MbK) seal – an ambassador for ‘Made in Germany’. It is a guarantee for consistency – everywhere in the world!

Wir machen’s wie unsere Kupplungen Kupplungen dienen der Kraftübertragung von einer Welle zur anderen. Dabei muss das Drehmoment ohne Verluste weitergegeben werden. Gleichzeitig sollen Stöße und Verlagerungen so gut wie möglich ausgeglichen werden. Diese „Verlagerungsfähigkeit“ wird auch von KTR als Unternehmen gefordert. Unsere Kunden verlegen ihre Fertigungsstätten rund um den Erdball. Als Global Player folgen wir ihnen an die Hotspots des internationalen Marktgeschehens, gründen Niederlassungen, rüsten sie mit Knowhow, Manpower und Maschinen aus. So übertragen wir unsere Kraft verlustfrei in die Zielgebiete unserer Kunden.

Auf zu neuen Ufern Die hohe „Verlagerungsfähigkeit“ zeichnet die KTRGruppe seit über zwei Jahrzehnten aus: bereits 1989 etablierten wir erste Produktionsstandorte in den Wachstumsregionen der USA. 1998 streckten wir unsere „Klauen“ und „Bogenzähne“ in die boomenden BRICSLänder aus – und gründeten Niederlassungen in China und Indien. Ende 2012 nimmt ein weiterer Standort die Fertigung im boomenden Brasilien auf. Mit dem fortschreitenden Internationalisierungsprozess verfolgt KTR das ehrgeizige Ziel, den Hauptanteil des Verkaufsvolumens in der jeweiligen Zielregion vor Ort zu produzieren.

Andere Länder, gleiche Sitten Wer einmal in China, Indien oder Brasilien gearbeitet hat, weiß, dass das gar nicht so einfach ist. We go where our couplings take us Couplings are used for power transmission from one shaft to another. In this process, torque has to be transferred loss-free. Impacts and misalignments concurrently need to be compensated for as optimally as possible, necessitating a certain tolerance from the coupling. When it comes to ‘shifting’, such tolerance is also expected of KTR in that our customers relocate their manufacturing facilities around the globe. As a global player, we follow them to the hot spots of international market activities, open up subsidiaries and equip them with know-how, man power and machinery. In doing this, we transfer our energies into our customers’ target areas.

Moving on to new pastures This high degree of flexibility has distinguished the KTR Group for more than two decades. Back in 1989 we established our first manufacturing bases in the growth regions of the USA. In 1998 we stretched our ‘claws’ and ‘curved teeth’ into the booming BRICS countries and established subsidiaries in China and India. At the end of 2012 a further site will take up production in flourishing Brazil. With the progressive process of internationalisation, KTR is pursuing the ambitious objective of producing the principal sales share by volume in each target region at local level.

MbK – Made by KTR MbK steht für „Made by KTR“. Hinter der Abkürzung verbirgt sich ein langer Katalog verbindlicher Maßnahmen: für’s Drehen, Fräsen, Wuchten, Schleifen, Bohren; für die Verarbeitung von Stahl, Aluminium, Guss-, CFKoder GFK-Werkstoffen. Made by KTR schreibt vor, dass bei allen Arbeitsschritten und Werkstoffen die gleichen Standards und Normen eingehalten sowie einheitliche Best-Practice-Prozesse umgesetzt werden.

Deshalb verfügt jede Niederlassung über die gleiche Hightech-Ausstattung wie das deutsche Stammwerk in Rheine. Auch die Fertigungszeichnungen werden an allen Standorten mit der bewährten 3D-Konstruktionssoftware ProEngineer erstellt – eine einheitliche „Bildsprache“, die auf der ganzen Welt verstanden wird!

Verbindlich, aber nicht starr Gute Kupplungen gleichen Unregelmäßigkeiten im Antriebsstrang flexibel aus. Solche Unregelmäßigkeiten treten auch im weltweiten Marktgeschehen auf. Denn jeder Markt und jeder Mensch ist anders. Deshalb verbinden wir Beständigkeit mit Anpassungsfähigkeit. In enger Abstimmung mit der KTR-Zentrale in Rheine wird für jede Niederlassung ein eigener Entwicklungsplan entworfen. Er berücksichtigt die lokalen Marktgegebenheiten und ist individuell auf die Niederlassung zugeschnitten. Erst wenn ein Produktionsstandort den internen MbK-Auditierungs- und Lizenzierungsprozess erfolgreich abgeschlossen hat, beginnt die lokale Fertigung.

working outside Germany, we make sure through transnational teamwork that KTR’s high standards are observed. The guarantee for this is the ‘Made by KTR’ quality management system we have implemented in all our manufacturing locations worldwide. That is how we embed the quality genes of our ‘German Engineering’ into the regional DNA of our target markets.

MbK – Made by KTR The MbK abbreviation masks a long list of mandatory provisions relating to turning, milling, balancing, grinding, drilling and the processing of steel, aluminium, cast materials together with carbon and glass fibre reinforced materials. ‘Made by KTR’ stipulates that the same standards have to be observed for all procedures and materials as well as uniform best-practice processes applied. Furthermore, every subsidiary has the same high-tech equipment at its disposal as the German parent plant in Rheine. Likewise at each location, production drawings are uniformly prepared using the approved ‘ProEngineer’ 3D design software – a common ‘visual language’ that is understood throughout the world.

Mandatory but not unadaptable Good couplings flexibly compensate for irregularities in drive trains. Such anomalies can also be observed in global market activities since all markets are different, like the people behind them, which is the reason we combine consistency with adaptability. An individual development plan is drafted for each subsidiary in close coordination with KTR headquarters in Rheine. This takes both local market and specific branch conditions into account. Only when the MbK auditing and licensing process has been successfully completed can local production begin.

Kupplungen von KTR sind ständig in Bewegung. Das gleiche gilt für unsere Mitarbeiter. Diese Bewegungsenergie gilt es aufzunehmen und in neue Produkte umzuleiten, die ihrerseits Bewegung in den Markt bringen.

Zu diesem Zweck hat KTR Anfang 2012 ein eigenes Innovationsteam ins Leben gerufen. Es besteht aus einer Ingenieurin und drei Ingenieuren. Ihr Traumberuf erfordert besondere Wachheit. Denn sie müssen eines klar erkennen: das, was es noch nicht gibt!

KTR couplings are always in motion. The same goes for our staff. It is imperative to absorb their ‘kinetic energy’ and redirect it into new products which themselves get the markets going. To optimize this process, KTR set up its own innovation team at the beginning of 2012 which now consists of one female and three male engineers.

Their dream job requires special alertness skills as they have to recognise one thing very clearly – the unborn!

Das Innovationsteam agiert wie ein Turbokompressor: „Flüchtige“ Gedanken in den Köpfen unserer Mitarbeiter werden gesammelt, verdichtet und über Innovationspipelines – kontinuierliche Gespräche – in die entsprechenden Abteilungen befördert. Mit der Entwicklungsabteilung wird die technische Machbarkeit geprüft, mit Produkt- und Branchenmanagern das Marktpotenzial eingeschätzt, mit der Geschäftsführung die KTR-Unternehmensstrategie abgeglichen.

Solidifying and redirecting On a daily basis KTR is in contact with the most diverse customers and industries from all over the globe. This leads to a pool of knowledge, experience and the occasional flash of inspiration. The innovation team acts like a supercharger, by collecting and giving form to sketchy staff ideas and networking them through ‘innovation pipelines’. This is done to stimulate dialogue in relevant departments. Together with the research and development division technical feasibility is checked.

Market potential is likewise assessed with product and industry managers and the corporate strategy is agreed on by KTR’s Executive Board.

Von der Idee zum Projekt Ist genügend „Druck im Kessel“, wird ein Start-upProjekt aufgesetzt. Damit es nicht im operativen Tagesgeschäft verpufft, werden Projektverantwortliche definiert und die nötigen Kosten und Ressourcen bereitgestellt. Ist eine Idee gut, aber noch nicht marktreif, kommt sie in den „Innovationsspeicher“ – wo sie für spätere Entwicklungen wieder angezapft werden kann.

From an idea to reality When there is enough buzz, a start-up project is launched.

To prevent it from losing inertia during operative dayto-day business, responsible project managers are appointed and necessary resources and finances allocated. If an idea is good but not ready for the market, it is deposited in the ‘innovation memory’ where it can be tapped into for later developments.

Recognising and translating trends It is not the task of our four new innovation team to develop existing products. Rather to get real milestones off the ground. They work as technology scouts – tracking down new innovation potential for business, picking up the scent of promising new materials and following current trends and megatrends.

Die intelligente Kupplung Ein wichtiger Trend ist z. B. die zunehmende Intelligenz der Technik. Hier hat der Maschinenbausektor enormes Potenzial: Stellen Sie sich „intelligente Kupplungen“ vor, die über Sensoren Schäden im Antriebsstrang erkennen und die Drehschwingung entsprechend verändern.

Das würde die vorbeugende Instandhaltung erheblich erleichtern und unerwartete Ausfälle verhindern.

Intelligent coupling A trending example is the increasing intelligence used in technology, showing enormous potential for the mechanical engineering sector. It is no longer hard to imagine ‘intelligent couplings’ that could recognise drive-train damage via sensors and then accordingly change the torsional vibration. This would significantly simplify preventive maintenance and hinder unexpected failures.

Das größte Arbeitsschiff der Welt setzt auf KTR Seit dem weltweiten Protest gegen die Versenkung der Ölplattform Brent Spar im Jahr 1995 ist das Rennen um die effizienteste Entsorgung „erschöpfter“ Bohrinseln entbrannt. Heute, fast 20 Jahre später, ist man dem Ziel näher als je zuvor: Pieter Schelte, das größte Arbeitsschiff der Welt, steht kurz vor dem Stapellauf. Es wird ganze Bohrinseln in einem Stück aus dem Wasser heben und „Huckepack“ an Land tragen. Für diesen beispiellosen Kraftakt braucht es extrem starke Muskeln – bewegt von Kupplungen, Bremsen und Hydraulikkomponenten aus dem Hause KTR.

Kurs in Richtung Zukunft Nach Schätzungen internationaler Experten werden etwa 6.500 Öl- und Gasförderplattformen weltweit bis zum Jahr 2025 ausgedient haben. Rückbau und Abtransport kosten die Öl-Industrie Milliarden. Die größten Turmplattformen sind fast so hoch wie der Eiffelturm, wiegen aber mitunter das Doppelte – bis zu 20.000 Tonnen. Wer soll solche Lasten bewegen? Antwort: Pieter Schelte, das Schiff der Superlative! Derzeit wird es von der Schweizer Allseas Gruppe in einer südkoreanischen Werft gebaut. 2014 soll es zu seinem ersten Offshore-Einsatz auslaufen.

Plattform in der Zange Der Ozeanriese ist als Katamaran ausgelegt. Die zwei gigantischen Rümpfe von je 382 m Länge sind von der Mitte an mit einander verbunden und erreichen eine Rekordbreite von 117 m – fast doppelt so viel wie die größten Frachtschiffe. Damit nimmt Pieter Schelte die Bohrplattform in die Zange. Das achtarmige Topsides Lift System soll bis zu 48.000 t am Stück hochwuchten können – mehr als 80 voll beladene Super-Airbus A380. →

Since the worldwide protests against the sinking of the ‘Brent Spar’ oil platform in 1995, a race for the most efficient disposal of ‘exhausted’ oil rigs has broken out. Nearly 20 years later, we are closer to reaching this goal than ever before. The world’s latest and largest single-lift and pipe-laying vessel, the Pieter Schelte, will soon be ready to launch. It will lift entire oil platforms out of the water in one piece and ‘piggyback’ them ashore. For this unparalleled act of strength, the vessel has been equipped with ultra-strong ‘muscles’ that are moved by couplings, brakes and hydraulic components – made by KTR. Setting sail for the future According to international-expert estimates, by 2025 approximately 6,500 oil and gas platforms worldwide will have served their time. Disassembly and removal costs for the oil industry will run into billions of Euros. The largest compliant tower platforms are nearly as high as the Eiffel tower and they can weigh up to double as much – nearly 20,000 tons. But how does one move such a load?

Pieter Schelte is the answer! This master-class vessel is presently being built by the Swiss Allseas Group in a South Korean shipyard.

Dann werden die Altlasten zur Abwrackwerft gebracht, wo sie effizient, umweltverträglich und ohne Risiko entsorgt werden können. Zum Vergleich: bisherige Hubschiffe können maximal 10.000 t am Stück hieven – Pieter Schelte macht sie allesamt zu „Leichtgewichten“!

KTR an Bord Mit dem Hochleistungsanspruch der Pieter Schelte bricht auch KTR zu neuen Ufern auf. Als Systemlieferant sind wir in zahlreichen Hebekonstruktionen vertreten: Für die Seitwärtsbewegung der „Beams“ kommen RADEX®-N-Stahllamellenkupplungen zum Einsatz, deren eingezogene Naben und außen liegende Lamellenpakete für hohe Verlagerungsfähigkeit und einen wartungsfreien Betrieb sorgen. Für das Windenequipment empfiehlt sich die durchschlagsichere Bolzenkupplung REVOLEX® KX-D 105, während Nothaltebremsen der Bauart KTR-STOP® S-35-F A-30 mit bis zu 4.000 Nm Bremsmoment eine sichere Bedienung der gesamten Anlage gewährleisten.

Das Arbeitsschiff Pieter Schelte wird für lange Zeit das Maß aller Dinge sein, wenn es um das Heben und Bewegen großer Lasten auf hoher See geht – wir freuen uns, dass wir mit „anpacken“ dürfen!

→ Rig in a tight grip This sea giant has been designed as a catamaran. Its two gigantic 382 m long hulls are joined in the middle so that the vessel will have a recordbreaking width of 117 m – nearly double the width of any of today’s existing cargo ships. To transport a platform, the Pieter Schelte will literally ‘embrace’ the rig with its eight lifting beams. This topsides-lifting system is designed to hoist up to 48,000 tons at a time – more than the weight of 80 fully-laden Super Airbus A380s.

Power mover After lifting the topsides onto the vessel, the ship turns 180 degrees and then uses its jacket-lifting system to raise the platform’s support structure that can weigh up to 25,000 tons. The dismantled platform is then brought to a ship-breaking yard where it can be disposed of risk-free in an efficient, environmentally friendly way. By today’s standards, lift vessels are capable of managing a maximum of 10,000 tons at a time – mere lightweights compared to Pieter Schelte!

Onboard with KTR With this construction vessel’s high performance aspirations, KTR too is moving into new territory. Our contribution as a system supplier in this project includes providing parts for numerous lifting constructions. For lateral beam movements, RADEX®-N steel laminae couplings are employed, whose reduced hubs and external laminae sets enable high tolerance for misalignment as well as maintenance-free operation. Sierra Leone ist reich an Bodenschätzen. Neben Chrom, Diamanten, Gold und Platin wurde hier kürzlich die größte Eisenerz-Lagerstätte Afrikas – möglicherweise der ganzen Welt – entdeckt. Das Gesamtvolumen wird auf bis zu 12,8 Milliarden Tonnen geschätzt. Ein zentrales Abbaugebiet liegt im Distrikt Tonkolili, mitten im Herzen des Landes. Doch noch immer fehlt es an einer guten Infrastruktur, um von den Schätzen der Region angemessen zu profitieren. Antriebskomponenten von KTR tragen dazu bei, sie aufzubauen – und bei Gefahr zu schützen.

Sierra Leone is a country rich in mineral resources.

Besides chrome, diamonds, gold and platinum, Africa’s largest and possibly the world’s most sizeable iron ore deposit was discovered recently with an estimated volume of 12.8 billion tons. The central mining area lies in the Tonkolili district in the heart of the country but it still lacks a proper infrastructure for the region to benefit from its treasures. KTR’s drive components are contributing towards building it as well as offering protection against dangers.

Starker Antrieb Das Fördersystem im Erztagebau von Tonkolili besteht aus einer Überland-Bandanlage von 2,6 km Länge, die über vier leistungsstarke Antriebe in Gang gehalten wird. Das Band transportiert ca. 3.500 Tonnen erzhaltigen Abraum pro Stunde. Eine Last, die kraftvoll bewegt werden will – und bei drohender Gefahr ebenso kraftvoll gebremst werden muss. Pro Förderband greifen daher zwölf KTR-STOP®-Scheibenbremsen mit einer Schließkraft von je 150 kN (Gesamtschließkraft 1.800 kN).

Doch diese Kraft muss dosiert eingesetzt werden. Sonst könnten die Bänder überlastet werden und Schäden mit hohen finanziellen Auswirkungen entstehen.

A strong drive The conveyor system used in Tonkolili’s open-cast ore mining consists of a 2.6 km long cross-country belt mechanism which is propelled by four highly efficient drives. As the belt transports some 3,500 tons of orebearing soil per hour, it has to be moved energetically.

In the case of imminent danger, the belt’s movement has to be retarded with just as much power. To facilitate this, twelve KTR-STOP® disc brakes are positioned at every conveyor belt to grip it, each with a clamping force of 150 kN. With a total force of 1,800kN, this has to be appropriately applied otherwise the belts could become overloaded causing damage with significant financial consequences.

Braving the wind and weather Whatever goes to Africa has, by nature, to be resilient. This is the case for our brakes too. Allein für den „Yas Marina Circuit“ in Abu Dhabi wurden 210.000 Tonnen Asphaltbeton in drei Schichten – und vielen Nachtschichten – zu 5,5 km Grand Prix-Strecke verarbeitet. Dabei kommt ein ganzes Heer mobiler Hochleistungsmaschinen zum Einsatz: Asphaltfertiger zum Aufbringen des Bodens, Vibrationswalzen zur anschließenden Verdichtung. Führende Baumaschinenhersteller setzen dabei auf Kupplungen von KTR. So machten unsere Drehmoment-Boliden bereits auf vielen Formel 1-Strecken das Rennen vor dem Rennen – von Abu Dhabi über Indien bis Korea.

At the start The building of racetracks makes particularly high demands of man, material and machines. For the ‘Yas Marina Circuit’ in Abu Dhabi alone, 210,000 tons of asphalt concrete were processed into 5.5 km of the three-layered Grand Prix track – requiring many a night shift. This necessitated a whole line-up of mobile highperformance machinery including pavers to lay asphalt and vibration rollers for the follow-up compaction.

Leading building-machinery manufacturers therefore rely on KTR couplings. At many Formula One circuits, our torque bolides have already won the race long before the race even starts – be it in Abu Dhabi, India or Korea.

During the race In the case of pavers, numerous components such as diesel drives, augers and screeds have to interact with each other for hours on end and often in the toughest of conditions. Heavy vibration, high temperatures and permanent imbalance, for example in the vibration rollers’ cams, exert enormous strain on all the drive components. If just one link of the chain malfunctions, the entire operation comes to a halt. Then the liquefied asphalt hardens making it unusable and, high productionloss costs become imminent.

Stahl ist nach wie vor die wichtigste Stütze vieler Industrienationen. Über 1,5 Milliarden Tonnen wurden 2011 weltweit produziert. Deutschland liegt auf Platz 1 in Europa. Doch der weltweite Stahlbedarf ist rückläufig und der Konkurrenzdruck aus China und Russland steigt. Um ihm standzuhalten, sind effiziente Verarbeitungsmethoden gefragt. Kupplungen von KTR tragen ihren kleinen, aber entscheidenden Teil dazu bei.

Steel is still the most essential pillar of many of today’s industrial nations. In 2011 alone over 1.5 billion tons were manufactured worldwide and Germany is still Europe’s No. 1 producer. But the demand for steel is declining across the globe and competitive pressure from China and Russia is on the rise. So as to withstand this, efficient processing methods are required. KTR plays a small but decisive role here with its couplings.

Diese Prozesse müssen mit hoher Geschwindigkeit millimetergenau über Walzen gesteuert werden. Das erfordert maximale Präzision und Ausdauer aller Antriebskomponenten unter konstant hoher Temperatur- und Gewichtsbelastung. →

ROTEX® – the coupling with an iron constitution One has to strike while the iron is hot – so says a wellknown proverb. And with modern hot rolling this is absolutely the case. Red-hot slabs from the furnace are formed when still above their re-crystallization temperature – in the case of steel between 720°C and 1260°C. Next 250 mm thick strip metal is reduced to 0.8 mm sheet metal and 8 m billets are stretched into 180 m long profiles. These processes need to be controlled at high speeds and with absolute accuracy using rollers. And this requires maximum precision and endurance of all the drive components at a consistently high temperature and a constant weight load. →

Das Hochleistungselastomer überzeugt durch höhere Dauerfestigkeit und Temperaturbeständigkeit. Es bleibt in Arbeitsumgebungen von - 50 °C bis + 150 °C in Bestform. Damit vergrößert sich der Einsatzbereich um 40 %, während der auslegungsrelevante Temperaturfaktor auf breiter Front sinkt. So können häufig kleinere Kupplungen als üblich eingebaut werden, was Platz und Kosten spart. Oder die Leistungsreserven werden erhöht. Ebenso effizient: der verschleißbedingte Zahnkranzwechsel ist dank der axialen Steckbarkeit der ROTEX® im Handumdrehen erledigt.

Mehrere Eisen im Feuer Neben ROTEX®-Kupplungen haben zahlreiche weitere Komponenten von KTR ihren festen Platz in der Stahlindustrie gefunden: in Kühlbetten kommen z. B. GEARex ® -Schwerlastkupplungen zum Einsatz, während KTR-STOP®-Bremsen in Kranen und Winden für maximale Sicherheit im hitzigen Hochofenbetrieb sorgen.

T-PUR® braves the heat Our designers have recently been able to significantly broaden the ROTEX® deployment range – by using new spiders made from T-PUR ®. This high-performance elastomer proves itself through its heightened fatigue strength and temperature resistance. It is at its peak form in working environments between -50°C and +150°C. In contrast to the past, its functional range has been extended by 40%, while the construction-relevant temperature factor has dropped across the board. As a result, it is now possible to incorporate smallersized couplings than previously, saving both space and costs.

Alternatively, output reserves can be increased with samesized couplings. And last but not least, thanks to the fact that the ROTEX® can be plugged in axially, worn-out spiders can be replaced in no time at all.

Keeping other irons in the fire Besides ROTEX® couplings, countless other components made by KTR have found their place in the steel industry. In cooling beds for example, GEARex® heavy-load couplings are used, while KTR STOP® brakes provide maximum security in cranes and winches employed in the fiery environment of the blast furnace.

Wo gehobelt wird, da fallen Späne – sagt ein altes Sprichwort. Im Reinraum sieht das anders aus. Hier müssen hochsensible Produkte unter strengsten Hygienebedingungen bewegt, verarbeitet, gefördert, verfüllt, montiert und verpackt werden. Dazu benötigt man elektrische Antriebe mit abriebfesten Oberflächen.

Das stellt Zulieferer von Reinraumanlagen vor große Herausforderungen. Kupplungen von KTR meistern diese Hürde und helfen unseren Kunden, „ins Reine“ zu kommen!

A vacuum cleaner does not belong in a clean room.

Nor does the dirt that it would suck up there! That is because the strictest hygiene conditions are needed where highly sensitive products have to be moved, processed, conveyed, bottled, assembled and packed.

Electric drives with abrasion-resistant surfaces are needed for this purpose, creating major challenges for clean room installation suppliers. KTR couplings master this obstacle and help our customers to ‘stay clean’!

Das Fraunhofer Institut für Produktionstechnik „Wir wollten rein in den Reinraum!“ bringt Produktmanager Johannes Deister den hygienetechnischen Vorstoß von KTR auf den Punkt – und in der Folge auf den Prüfstand. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem renommierten Fraunhofer Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung (IPA) in Stuttgart wurden die drei Kupplungsbaureihen ROTEX® GS, RADEX®-NC und TOOLFLEX® umfangreichen Tests unterzogen. Dass es sich bei den drei Kandidaten um spielfreie Servokupplungen für Präzisionsanwendungen handelt, ist kein Zufall. Zum einen kommen im Reinraum überwiegend Präzisionsantriebe zum Einsatz. Zum anderen tritt an spielfreien Kupplungen generell weniger Abrieb auf als an spielbehafteten. →

The turn of the shaft couplings There is a good reason why it is preferential to equip electric drives with shaft couplings. They are excellent when it comes to misalignment compensation in a drive and as a result, they significantly increase a system’s longevity. Because an entity is only as clean as the smallest of its parts, the following applies: if drives are employed in clean-room technology or environments with enhanced hygiene demands, equally ‘clean-room fit’ couplings are needed. So KTR decided to put theirs to the test.

The Fraunhofer Institute KTR’s product manager Johannes Deister got straight to the point. “We want to get into clean room technology”. Three coupling series – the ROTEX® GS, the RADEX®-NC and the TOOLFLEX® were extensively tested in cooperation with the reputable Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart. And it was no coincidence that all three candidates were backlash-free servo couplings for precision applications – firstly precision drives are most commonly used in clean rooms and secondly backlash-free couplings generally exhibit less abrasion than those with backlash. →

028 Das Reinheitsgebot – nach DIN EN ISO 14644 Die Anforderungen für die Reinraumfertigung sind In Europa in der Norm EN ISO 14644 geregelt. Je nach Reinraumklasse – von ISO 1 bis ISO 9 – darf der Partikelgehalt der Luft eine definierte Menge nicht überschreiten.

Auch für Raumtemperatur und Luftdruck gelten branchenspezifische Parameter. Um sie zu erfüllen, kommen Filteranlagen, Überdruckoder Vakuumpumpen und sogenannte Laminar-Flow-Einheiten zum Einsatz.

Weniger ist mehr Was zu beweisen war: Zu diesem Zweck wurden alle Kupplungen in voll funktionsfähige Antriebsstränge eingebaut und in den Reinraum platziert. Bei laufendem Antrieb wurden die abgegebenen Partikelemissionen abgesaugt und von einem Präzisions-Partikelzähler nach Größenklassen erfasst. Damit den Experten des Fraunhofer Instituts nichts „durchgeht“, wurden an jeder Kupplung gezielte Messstellen definiert, an denen am ehesten mit Kontaminationen zu rechnen sei.

Quantifiziert, klassifiziert, zertifiziert Das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen: alle getesteten Kupplungen gaben extrem wenig Partikelemissionen ab. Die untersuchten Kupplungen erreichten sogar die Reinheitsklasse 7 bzw. 8 nach DIN EN ISO 14644-1.

ISO 7 und ISO 8 entsprechen der GMP-Klasse „C“ in der Pharma-Industrie. Sie umfasst „reine Bereiche für weniger kritischen Schritte bei der Herstellung steriler Arzneimittel.“ Damit können KTR-Kupplungen branchenübergreifend in fast allen Bereichen der Reinraumfertigung eingesetzt werden. In Anlehnung an die Automobiltechnik könnte man nahezu von „Zero Emission-Kupplungen“ sprechen!

Geringe Ausgasungen beim Zahnkranz Neben der eigentlichen Kupplung müssen auch die Verschleißteile den hohen Reinraumerwartungen entsprechen. Auch hier erfüllt KTR die Anforderungen. Bei der Ausgasungsprüfung des Zahnkranzes der ROTEX® GS nach ISO- bzw. VDI-Norm ergab sich ein durchweg sauberes Bild: die gasförmigen Emissionen sind so gering, dass sie die hohe RISO-AMCm-Klasse 8 erreichen.

Drei Mal erste Wahl Fazit: Bei KTR haben Konstrukteure von Antrieben für Reinraum-Anwendungen drei Mal erste Wahl – Klauenkupplung, Stahllamellenkupplung oder Metallbalgkupplung, ROTEX® GS, RADEX®-NC oder TOOLFLEX®.

Alle drei haben bewiesen, dass sie für den Einsatz in Reinräumen ohne Einschränkung einsatzfähig sind.

Vielleicht ist es kein Zufall, dass drei der besten Wellenkupplungen für die Reinraumfertigung aus „R(h)eine“ kommen!

The ‚purity law‘ – according to DIN EN ISO 14644 In Europe, the requirements relating to clean room manufacturing are regulated by the EN ISO 14644 standard. The cleanliness classes, which range from ISO 14644-1 to ISO 14644-9, define limited amounts of airborne particles which cannot be exceeded. There are also industry-specific parameters for room temperature and air pressure. Filter systems, booster or vacuum pumps and laminar flow units are used so as to comply with these restrictions.

Less is more The differences had to be substantiated. To this end, all the couplings were mounted in fully functioning drive trains and placed in a clean room. While the drives were running, the emitted particles were extracted using a precision-particle counter which can also give information about particle size classes. So as to ensure that the Fraunhofer Institute experts missed nothing, special measuring points were defined for each coupling at locations where the chance for contamination was considered to be highest.

Quantified, classified, certified The result was impressive. All the tested couplings had a very low particle emission count. They even achieved DIN EN ISO 14644-1 cleanliness classes 7 and 8. ISO 7 and ISO 8 are equivalent to GMP (Good manufacturing practice) grade ‘C’ in the pharmaceutical industry. They encompass ‘clean areas for less critical steps in the manufacturing of sterile pharmaceuticals’ as required

by German law. These test results qualify the use of KTR couplings across a broad range of industries when it comes to clean room manufacturing. If a parallel were made to automotive engineering, one could almost speak of ‘zero-emission couplings’!

Low gas-emitting spiders Besides the coupling itself, parts subjected to wear also have to fulfil the high-level expectations required in clean rooms. KTR met these demands here too. The gas emission test used to determine compliance with ISO and VDI standards relating to the ROTEX® GS spider showed an entirely clean picture. The gaseous emissions were so low that they even achieved the exacting RISO-AMCm classification 8.

Three times a winner The bottom line is that when it comes to drives for clean room applications, KTR’s designers offer a triple topquality choice – ROTEX® GS jaw couplings, RADEX®-NC steel laminae couplings or TOOLFLEX® metal bellowtype couplings. All three have proven that they are a limitation-free fit for use in clean rooms.

Im Reinraum muss er so sauber wie möglich „auftreten“. Von Kopf bis Fuß in flusenfreie Spezialkleidung – Haarnetz, Mundschutz, Overall, Handschuhe und Reinraumschuhe – gehüllt, bewegt er sich durch Aktiv- und Passivschleusen, an Desinfektionsanlagen vorbei, unter Luftduschen hindurch und über klebstoffbeschichtete Fußböden hinweg, die Staubpartikel und Bakterien von den Schuhsohlen abgreifen und binden. Nicht immer das reinste Vergnügen!

All clean? The human dirt factor Despite highest possible room cleanliness, there is still one virulent dirt factor – the human being! A clean room has to be kept as hygenic as possible. Enveloped from head to toe in a lint-free special hairnet, face mask, overall, gloves and clean-room shoes, a cleaner moves through active and passive airlocks, past disinfectors, through air showers and over adhesive-coated floors that pick off and bind dust particles and bacteria from shoe soles.

Vor über 50 Jahren legte sie den Grundstein für den internationalen Erfolg von KTR: die BoWex ® Bogenzahn® -Kupplung. Sie wurde branchenübergreifend zum Synonym für wartungsfreie, drehstarre Wellenkupplungen. Doch die Zeit blieb nicht stehen.

Ebenso wenig wie KTR: durch kontinuierliche Verbesserungen, Veränderungen und Erweiterungen haben wir die BoWex® immer wieder neuen Herausforderungen angepasst. Jüngste Errungenschaft dieses Erfolgsstrebens: die neue BoWex® GT mit einer Spezialhülse aus Kohlefaser.

When the BoWex® curved-tooth gear coupling came into being over 50 years ago, it paved the way for KTR’s international success. In many industry sectors it became a synonym for the maintenance-free torsionally rigid shaft coupling. Time though, does not stand still.

ACHEMA 2012 Auf der ACHEMA 2012, der weltgrößten Ausstellung für Chemie- und Biotechnologie in Frankfurt, ist es so weit: KTR Rheine stellt die neue BoWex® GTBogenzahn®-Kupplung vor und schließt damit eine wichtige Anwendungslücke in der Pumpenindustrie: größere Radialverlagerungskapazität bei einfacherer Montage und Freiheit von Rückstellkräften. Das neue Kupplungskonstrukt schlägt zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe. Genauer gesagt: mit zwei Halbschalen!

Hohe Verlagerungsfähigkeit Im rauen Industriebetrieb, insbesondere der chemischen Industrie, wird von Kupplungen hohe Verlagerungsfähigkeit gefordert. BoWex®-Kupplungen sind durch ihr doppelkardanisches Wirkprinzip perfekt darauf eingestellt: es ermöglicht die gewünschte formschlüssige Drehmomentübertragung sowohl bei axialer, radialer als auch winkeliger Wellenverlagerung.

Grund dafür ist der Bogenzahn selbst, der eine Kantenpressung bei Winkel-Radialversatz verhindert.

Die große Kontaktfläche zwischen Nabenverzahnung und Hülse sowie die Werkstoffpaarung von Stahlnabe und kohlefaserverstärkter Kunststoffhülse sind die Geheimnisse dieses optimalen Verschleißverhaltens.

Einfache Montage Dem wachsenden Zeit- und Kostendruck kommt ein weiterer konstruktiver Vorteil entgegen: um die Montage zu erleichtern, wurde die Kupplungshülse in zwei identische Halbschalen unterteilt. Beide Hälften können schnell und einfach demontiert werden, ohne dass der Motor oder die Pumpe verschoben werden müssten.

So kann die Zeit für vorbeugende Wartung auf ein Minimum reduziert werden. Antriebe, die bereits mit einer BoWex®-Kupplung ausgerüstet sind, können ebenfalls einfach mit der neuen BoWex® GT nachgerüstet werden.

Optimaler Schutz Darüber hinaus bietet die Kupplungshülse aus kohlefaserverstärktem Kunststoff perfekten Schutz. Das hochfeste Polyamid ist elektrisch leitfähig, so dass auch für die neue BoWex® GT eine ATEX-Zertifizierung in Aussicht gestellt werden kann.

ACHEMA 2012 The scene was set. At the world’s largest chemistry and biotechnology trade fair in Frankfurt, KTR unveiled its latest product, the BoWex® GT. In doing so KTR bridged an important application gap in the pump industry with its curved-tooth gear coupling, offering increased tolerance for radial misalignments. This double semishell coup offers simpler assembly and freedom from restoring forces.

High misalignment tolerance For harsh industrial operations, especially in the chemical industry, the ability to compensate for significant misalignment is required from couplings. Our BoWex® products are perfectly geared to this through their double-cardanic operating principle, which enables a desired positive torque transmission with both axial or radial and angular shaft misalignment. This results from the curved tooth itself, which prevents edge pressure caused by angular and radial misalignment. The secret of this optimal wear behaviour is not only the fusion of materials used but also the large contact area between the steel hub spline and the carbon-fibre reinforced plastic sleeve.

Easy assembly BoWex ® couplings offer a further constructional advantage. With today’s mounting pressures to save time and costs, the coupling sleeve is divided into two absolutely identical semi-shells, simplifying assembly.

So when it comes to preventive maintenance, both halves of the sleeve can be disassembled quickly and easily, without having to shift either the motor or the pump, thereby reducing time needed to a minimum.

Drives already equipped with a BoWex® coupling can easily be retrofitted with the new BoWex® GT. Optimal protection What is more, the carbon-fibre reinforced plastic coupling sleeve offers perfect screening. The high-tenacity polyamide is electrically conductive, greatly increasing the chance of receiving an ATEX certification, if required.

Wo rohe Kräfte sinnvoll walten Die neue Ganzstahlkupplung RIGIFLEX®-HP überträgt höchste Drehmomente und gleicht Wellenverlagerungen flexibel aus. Als High-Performance-Kupplung meistert sie bis zu 429.000 Nm im Spitzenbereich, macht bis zu 17.300 Umdrehungen pro Minute und erreicht mit ca. 700 km/h mehr als die halbe Schallgeschwindigkeit. Damit macht sie sich für die vielfältigsten Anwendungsgebiete stark: schnell laufende Pumpen und Generatoren, Dampf- und Gasturbinen in Chemiewerken, Turbokompressoren zur Verflüssigung oder Dekomprimierung von Industriegasen, Großventilatoren in Bergwerken, Tunneln, Windkanälen oder Entrauchungsanlagen. Die RIGIFLEX®-HP entspricht den hohen Anforderungen des American Petroleum Institute API 610 und API 670 und kann problemlos in der Petrochemie eingesetzt werden.

Physical forces turn beneficial The new all-steel RIGIFLEX®-HP coupling transmits ultimate torques at the same time as flexibly compensating for shaft misalignments. This high performer masters peak values up to 429,000 Nm at up to 17,300 revolutions per minute. And at around 700 km/h, the coupling reaches more than half the speed of sound.

It can accordingly be used in a very broad range of equipment such as fast-running pumps and generators, steam or gas turbines in chemical plants, turbo compressors for the liquefaction or decompression of industrial gases or for large fans in mines, tunnels, wind tunnels or even smoke extraction systems. The RIGIFLEX®-HP meets the top-level requirements set by the API 610 and API 670 specifications issued by the American Petroleum Institute, so it can easily be used in the petro-chemistry industry too.

What drives are made of

To deliver such performance and capacity, a device has to be cast in the right mould. MbK (Made by KTR) means that coupling hubs, flanges and spacers are exclusively made of high-quality tempering steel while the torsionally stiff coupling laminas comprise very stiff spring steel. And best of all – they are all very low in weight. Elaborate FEM calculation methods enabled a lighter weight and more compact design of the RIGIFLEX®-HP. This not only delivers a competitive advantage over comparable products, it results in a broader application spectrum.

Form follows Function High-Performance-Anwendungen erfordern eine genaue Anpassung der Kupplung an die Übertragungsmechanik. Darüber hinaus wird jede RIGIFLEX®-HP nach den in der API 671 empfohlenen Methoden – Einzelteil- und Summenwuchtung – gewuchtet. Das garantiert maximale Laufruhe – auch im Grenzbereich.

Function-determined design High-performance applications necessitate precise adjustment of the coupling to the transmission mechanics. The solution here is to design the coupling in accordance with the required torsional stiffness. An additional challenge is the centre of mass position that is specified by the customer and which can be adjusted in accordance with that specification. With the aid of 3D designing systems as well as calculation and simulation software for the torsional vibration analysis, KTR design engineers create precise prototypes for a coupling.

Each RIGIFLEX®-HP is then balanced according to API 671 recommended methods, beginning with the components themselves followed by an overall balancing. This procedure guarantees very smooth running – even when the coupling approaches threshold values.

Researchers the world over constantly look for ways to improve the robustness and resistance of machine components.

In recent years a new star has arisen and this constellation goes under the name of PEEK. Regarded as one of the most efficient synthetic materials available worldwide, this versatile polymer combines high strength and temperature resistance with low weight and ease of processing. We have recently started using PEEK in KTR’s MINEX®-S permanent-magnetic synchronous coupling.

MINEX®-S is leak-proof The key virtue of this coupling is it imperviousness, with the result that the MINEX®-S is the preferred choice as a sealing element in pumps, agitators and foaming machines. Its contact-free torque transmission, due to permanent magnets, ensures a hermetic separation of the drive and the driven parts, thereby hindering the penetration of undesired substances into the processing section and the leakage of aggressive materials into the surrounding environment.

Aller guten Dinge sind drei Bisher waren die Standardausführungen der MINEX®-S mit Spalttöpfen aus metallischen oder keramischen Werkstoffen lieferbar, die aufgrund ihrer hohen Druck- und Temperaturbeständigkeit bereits einen großen Einsatzbereich abdecken. Due to their high pressure and temperature resistance, this coupling covered a wide range of applications. As of today, KTR offers containment shrouds made from our new highperformance synthetic PEEK material for SA 75/10 to SE165/24 sizes. This broadens the coupling’s field of application.

Einen kühlen Topf bewahren Metallische Spalttöpfe verursachen in rotierenden Magnetfeldern Wirbelstromverluste. Mit Spalttöpfen aus Keramik oder Kunststoff können diese Verluste ausgeschlossen und die Auslegungsmomente bei der Kupplungsberechnung um 10 bis 15 % reduziert werden. Zudem kann bei metallischen Spalttöpfen die durch Wirbelströme entstehende Wärme häufig nicht abgeführt werden – ein Nachteil für trockenlaufende Anwendungen. Keramik- oder PEEK-Spalttöpfe erzeugen hingegen keine unerwünschte Wärme. Das macht die MINEX®-S auch für Förderpumpen interessant, in denen keine Kühlkreisläufe realisierbar sind.

Containing one’s cool In rotating magnetic fields, metallic containment shrouds generate eddy-current losses. So as to preclude them, using containment shrouds made from ceramics or synthetics enables a gearing factor reduction of 10% to 15% when dimensioning the coupling. What is more, it is frequently impossible to dissipate the heat generated by eddy currents when using metallic conatinment shrouds – a disadvantage when using no-lube applications. By contrast, PEEK or ceramic shrouds do not generate any spurious heat. This makes the MINEX®-S an attractive choice for use in feed pumps where cooling circuits cannot be implemented.

PEEK it easy!

Ein weiterer Vorteil: im Unterschied zur bruchempfindlicheren Keramik lässt sich PEEK wesentlich leichter verarbeiten.

Durch einen Anteil verstärkender Glasfasern können MINEX®Kupplungen mit PEEK-Spalttopf je nach Baugröße für Nenndrücke bis zu 16 bar bei zulässigen Temperaturen bis 130 °C eingesetzt werden. Das macht PEEK zum Werkstoff der Wahl für anspruchsvolle Magnetkupplungs-Anwendungen.

PEEK it easy!

Users benefit from yet another PEEK advantage – it is considerably easier to work with. MINEX® couplings made with PEEK containment shrouds are reinforced with glass fibre and, depending on their size, can be used with nominal pressures up to 16 bar at temperatures up to a maximum of 130°C. This makes PEEK the material of choice for demanding magnetic coupling applications.
