Town Council newsletter. Summer 2017 has been extremely busy. Our Operations team have been working hard to keep on top of grass cutting and ensuring the town’s floral displays have been kept in premium condition. Our Events Team have brought you a series of popular summer events including the Armed Forces Day celebrations, Charity Dragon Boat Race, Summer Band Concerts, Outdoor Cinema and most recently the Freedom of the Town Parade for the Royal Air Force Cadets.

The 2017 St Neots Awards programme has seen more than 20 local community heroes recognised for their efforts - all the winners stories are detailed in this issue.

Moving towards Christmas we have more exciting events planned to celebrate the festive season. The popular Elf on the Shelf town centre shops trail is returning and there will be a Christmas Market in the town 1st-3rd December. Not to forget the spectacular Christmas Lights Switch On taking place Sunday 26 November. Read more about all of these inside this issue.

Applicants for the role of town crier in St Neots to audition at the towns Xmas Lights Switch On! Those performing will be provided with traditional outfits and will be making announcements throughout the day in front of a panel of judges. The winner will be chosen and their first official outing will be to announce the switching on of our new Xmas Lights display at 5pm on the main stage.

FREEDOM OF THE TOWN

Freedom of the Town granted to Royal Air Force Air Cadets, 2500 Squadron On Saturday 14 October crowds watched as Mayor, Cllr Derek Giles granted the Freedom of St Neots to the air cadets during a formal ceremony on the Market Square.

They were joined by John Bridge, OBE DL and Richard Pemberton, High Sheriff Cambridgeshire.

The squadron together with visiting cadet groups from Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire exercised their right to march through the town centre to cheers from onlookers.

Cllr Giles said “I am proud of the squadron’s long association with the town and their dedication spanning nearly 40 years. They have always been there to help with any task asked of them which has been much appreciated. We applaud the efforts the cadets and staff make. The parents should also share this honour. 2500 are dear to our hearts and we are delighted to have them exercise their rights to march through our town.”

The winners of the third St Neots Awards were announced at a gala ceremony, held at the Priory Centre on Friday 29 September. The Awards programme was established by St Neots Town Council in 2015 to recognise and celebrate outstanding individuals from across the community. More than 20 local heroes were recognised with Awards this year. 180 guests attended the ceremony, hosted by Black Cat 107, St Neots Community Radio Station. Guests were also entertained by singer, songwriter, Lawrence Hill, who appeared on the Voice UK earlier this year.

Sports Person of the Year sponsored by Erin Hall (WINNER) Despite only taking up dragon boating as a sport just over a year ago, Erin was selected to join the Great Britain Junior Dragon Boat Squad to compete at the World Junior Championships in France earlier this year. Erin has been described as a “shining light” to other junior members of St Neots Dragon Boat Team, showing them how hard work and dedication can pay off.

Fundraiser of the Year sponsored by Alexis Ellison (WINNER) is father to 5 year old Samson, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2015. Since then Alexis has fundraised tirelessly for the charity Action Duchenne, which exists to aid research into finding a cure for Duchenne dystrophy, a progressive, lifelimiting condition. Alexis has taken part in gruelling challenges to fundraise including the world’s Toughest Mudder competition in the Nevada Desert; a 300 mile bike ride from Newcastle to London, a parachute jump at 10,000ft and the Parallel London event. He has even donned a homemade sandwich board and walked the streets of St Neots and Norwich to raise awareness of Action Duchenne.

Debbie Abbott (WINNER) works as a midwife at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and has been a dedicated volunteer for the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers for 15 years. As a volunteer breastfeeding counsellor Debbie provides advice and assistance to mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.

This includes running a drop in clinic at the Eaton’s Children’s Centre every week, visits to mothers at home and providing assistance on the phone day and night to support mothers facing breastfeeding challenges.

sponsored by Falcon Flames (WINNER) a cheerleading club established nine years ago, enable people of all ages to be active, have fun, share aspirations and work as a team to achieve goals.

Over the years the club has grown to offer a wide range of classes including cheer for fun, cheer for minis, cheer for juniors, stunt, and dance. The club organise a yearly show (held at the Priory Centre) where the cheerleaders perform and have fun; some members compete in national competitions and the Flames have achieved great success. They can also been seen cheering at St Neots Football Club and Rugby Club games as well as local events including the annual Christmas Lights Switch On.

Community Group of the Year sponsored by Riverside Miniature Railway (WINNER) is a community miniature railway built for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to St Neots. The railway is built, maintained and operated by a group of unpaid volunteers. The volunteers have worked tirelessly to obtain finances for the railway through generous grants provided by local government, Rotary and local businesses, as well as sponsorship from the general public. Many volunteers have also committed their own personal funds to the project, as well as many man-hours to keep the project moving forward. Even though the track is still not complete, they have been operating trains every weekend during the summer months for families and visitors to the town to enjoy. In addition they have also been able to involve local groups including Switch Now and school groups in the project.

Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by

Trevor Gunton (WINNER) co-founded the Friends of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve in 1989 and has served the reserve tirelessly ever since as a trustee and volunteer.

His achievements include taking the friends group to beyond 2,500 members, making it the biggest friends group in nature conservation in the UK. The Friends Group is a registered charity and donates all its income to the Reserve. Trevor has led all fundraising efforts, volunteer recruitment, events and outreach to make the Friends a thriving and active support group with more than 100 active volunteers. Visitors come from all over the UK to see and hear the birds at Paxton Pits. The reserve has been described as a ‘national treasure’ adding a great deal to the quality of local life for and educating the community on wildlife education and preservation.

Highly Commended in this category was Ken Minney for services to the Royal British Legion and John Davies from the Town Centre Initiative for services to St Neots.

Sam and Liam Smith (WINNERS) Described as a “truly inspirational family” their son, Zachery was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2010. Since then they have worked tirelessly to fundraise almost £20,000 so Zachery can have equipment and operations to make his life more comfortable. Sam’s parents have entered Tough Mudder, triathlons and marathons, organised fun days, events and raffles to fundraise, whilst all the time never giving up hope for their son and always keeping a smile on their face.

Also Highly Commended in this category were the Saavedra Family for their fundraising efforts for the Neuro Foundation and Thomas and Charlie Bell, two young brothers who were nominated for their efforts as Young Carers for their mother.

Thousands raised for local charities through dragon boat event This year’s charity dragon boat race took place alongside Regatta Meadow on Saturday 19 August. The event, which is organised annually by St Neots Town Council, the Rotary Club of St Neots St Mary’s and St Neots Dragon Boat Team, was established by the partners in 2013. The objective of the event is to raise money for local charities, increase the profile of dragon boat racing as a sport and promote St Neots’ beautiful parkland and river setting.

Twenty amateur crews took part in the race this year and the event attracted over 3,000 spectators, who turned out to support the teams and enjoy the bankside entertainment.

Charitable funds collected from onsite car parking, programme sales, sponsorship and advertising exceeded £5,000 this year, which is the highest figure to date. This year’s lead supported charity is Cambridgeshire Mind, the mental health charity, which has a branch in St Neots. Profits from the event will also donated to local organisations supported by the Mayor of St Neots Charity Fund. These include the 2500 Royal Air Force Cadets, Bushmead School all weather pitch fund, Priory Infants School sensory garden project and Switch Now an organisation that supports young people with learning difficulties to gain work experience.

Katie Williams, Town Development Manager at St Neots Town Council, who coorganised the event said: “It is such a pleasure to organise this event, which is enjoyed immensely by competitors and spectators alike. Its success would not be possible without our co-event organisers at St Neots Dragon Boat team, whose volunteers dedicate many hours to train the novice crews in advance of the race and the Rotary Club of St Neots St Mary’s whose members secured advertisers for the programme and provided several volunteer stewards to help manage the event on the day. Their assistance is invaluable and these groups are an asset to the town.”

ST NEOTS TO BE FIRST MARKET TOWN BACKED

BY COMBINED AUTHORITY

A team of specialist consultants have been appointed by the Combined Authority of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to create a growth plan for St Neots to help the town reach its full potential as a great place to live, work and visit.

The masterplan report recommends that £5.8m is invested in a number of projects designed to unlock growth in St Neots, leading to a regeneration of the town centre. If supported it will mean that St Neots becomes the first market town in the county to benefit from Combined Authority funding targeted to promote growth in towns, cities and villages.

The investment will be made following consultation with a new steering group called the St Neots Masterplan Partnership. The partnership will be comprised of local and regional politicians along with representatives from the business, education and health sectors, as well as other stakeholders.

The second phase to the masterplan will focus on creating a skilled workforce to support the industries within the town and attracting more businesses to locate to or grow in St Neots. The plan will also consider arising opportunities such as the connectivity of the East – West corridor and the feasibility study already underway on the introduction of a rapid mass transport link between St Neots and Cambridge.

Councillor Robin Howe, Deputy Mayor for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, said: “St Neots is the largest town in the region and has great potential, but this needs to be unlocked. If given backing by the Board, the initial £5.8 million will make a real impact and will make a considerable difference within the town. Proposals for the regeneration of the town centre and improved transportation will give a real boost for all of St Neots’ residents and would help to attract more people to come to this fantastic place.”

Councillor Graham Bull, Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “St Neots is a hugely important place, and is key to the overall success of Huntingdonshire.

We are very keen to work together with our partners at the Town Council and the Combined Authority to realise St Neots’ full potential for creating jobs and homes, and also for community well-being. Delivering our ‘Local Plan to 2036’, alongside the Town’s own Neighbourhood Plan and the Combined Authority’s Masterplan gives all of us the tools to do exactly that. A new appetite to make things happen, and new funding to unlock progress is most welcome.”

Councillor Derek Giles, Mayor of the St Neots, said: “This investment by the Combined Authority into St Neots will be a great opportunity to help reverse the worrying trend of St Neots further becoming a dormitory town. The plan to revitalise the town centre to help the day time economy is welcome, as well as the long term skill training opportunities for our young people which will bring long term benefits to St.Neots for decades to come. These are exciting times for our town and I am glad that the other authorities are now proposing to work with, and listen to, our Town Council for the benefit of all residents. It's local skilled job opportunities we need not just more houses for commuters.”

St Neots was chosen by the Combined Authority as the starting point for a renewed focus on market towns and is the first in a series of masterplan studies proposed for the market towns of Cambridgeshire by Mayor James Palmer.

The plans aim to ensure that growth in housing numbers is coordinated with improved infrastructure, enhanced education and skills training as well as the provision of more local jobs; all of which together will lead to regenerated towns with improved mobility and local services.

FESTIVAL OF WATER TO COME TO ST NEOTS IN 2018 The Inland Waterways Association, a national charity working to protect and restore the country’s 6,500 miles of canals and rivers, has announced that it will be bringing the annual IWA Festival of Water to St Neots in 2018. The event will take place on the Regatta Meadow, Riverside Park on the River Great Ouse over the August Bank Holiday weekend next year, from 25 to 27 August 2018. The festival is being supported by Huntingdonshire District Council and St Neots Town Council who are both very enthusiastic about the event coming to the area.

The IWA Festival of Water brings a free family day out offering attractions both on and off the water. Many boats attend, including leisure, trade, heritage and working narrowboats and a wide range of craft stalls, music, entertainment and activities for children ensure fun is had by all. There will also be a market and fundraising stalls and the IWA would like to hear from boaters, charities and local groups who are interested in having a stall and fundraising for their chosen cause.

IWA Events Team Chairman Jane Elwell said: "We are so pleased with the encouraging comments made by both local councils who are really looking forward to the IWA’s Festival of Water coming to town. There will be several exciting boating events on the Anglian Waterways in 2018 and we are sure IWA members and supporters will have a wonderful time getting to know the waterways better as they cruise their way to St Neots.”

It is the perfect location for a waterside festival and we have some fantastic ideas that we are working on with The Inland Waterways Association to make this event one to remember.”
