ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT AND DEGREE COMPLETION

INSTRUCTORS SHOULD KNOW... Academic Engagement and Degree Completion serves all students from the time they apply through graduation by providing access to placement assessments, reassessments, CLEP testing, and for returning adult students, Degree Completion. The department also provides centralized oversight to the 17 de-centralized advising offices in the KSU system mostly in the form of Required Advising, probation and dismissal notification, and related policy enforcement. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... Placement assessments determine where you begin math, foreign language, chemistry, and English. Take these seriously, as time and money are at stake Get credit for what you already know by taking CLEP . At only $125 per test, you could save thousands on the cost of tuition You will see your advisor EVERY semester you are at KSU. In addition to providing campus wide programming via Kent Student Center Programming, the Center for Student Involvement is dedicated to leadership development through student organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Life and Undergraduate Student Government. Other programs such as UCommute and FLASHperks, strive to engage and strengthen students’ commitment to Kent State University. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... STUDENT OMBUDS OFFICE

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. INSTRUCTORS SHOULD KNOW... The Student Ombuds office is a place where student questions, complaints and concerns about the functioning of the University can be discussed confidentially and in a safe environment. The office assists students, faculty and staff in locating appropriate campus and community resources, helps them navigate university policies or procedures, and assists in deliberating available options. The office operates independently and impartially as a supplement to existing administrative and formal dispute resolution processes. It has no formal decision-making authority, but does advocate for fair, consistent, and equitable treatment for students. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... Common concerns that are brought to the Student Ombuds’ attention include, but are not limited to: grade grievances/appeals, academic dismissal/appeals, concerns about a course instructor or advisor, academic dishonesty issues, concerns about progress to degree, financial-aid and/or tuition payment issues, feelings of harassment or discrimination, and/or general due process issues. KENT POLICE

24/7/365 (always open) INSTRUCTORS SHOULD KNOW... Our police department regularly patrols campus and surrounding areas. We respond to calls for service as well as attempt to deter criminal activity. We provide numerous services for the KSU community such as car lock-outs, jump starts, and educational presentations such as A.L.I.C.E, alcohol/drug awareness, party safety, women in law enforcement, and law enforcement occupations. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... Our police department is always open. We are a community service oriented police department. We have several community events throughout the year such as “Coffee with a Cop”, The Police Experience Academy, etc. where we get to know our students and vice versa. We will also come to your event and bring the DUI goggles to “walk the line” or Mario Kart. If there is an emergency, our emergency number is 911. For non-emergency calls such as a theft report, disabled vehicle, question, etc. please call the non-emergency number at 330-672-2212. THE COUNSELING CENTER

The Counseling Center is a mental health counseling facility on campus that provides individual counseling services to students and employees free-of-charge. Our staff is able to assist students with a variety of mental health concerns ranging from anxiety and depression to relationships and suicidal thoughts. We serve as a resource for instructors in a variety of ways. We can provide in-class presentations on a number of mental health-related topics. We are also available for consultation regarding students you may have concerns about. Feel free to call our office and speak with the director or the assistant director in such matters. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... The Counseling Center is a mental health counseling facility on campus that provides individual counseling services to students free-of-charge. Our staff is able to assist students with a variety of mental health concerns ranging from anxiety and depression to relationships and suicidal thoughts. Making an appointment is very simple. The Department of Recreational Services, utilizing innovative technology and state-ofthe-art equipment, seeks to enhance the balance between academic experiences and healthy lifestyles. By engaging the university community, we will pave the way for social opportunities that promote personal growth, integrity and pride. The Department of Recreational Services will be a leader in the field of campus recreation by creating a safe, secure and fun environment to meet the needs of the campus and community; by reaching out to our patrons and their families by creating an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and welcome; by providing growth prospects through expanded facilities and programs that meet the needs of future students, staff and community members. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... We employ more than 200 students every year and offer multiple Job Fairs each semester. Tri-Rec, a satellite exercise facility located above the Tri-Towers Rotunda, is open exclusively to on-campus residents and has more than 70 pieces of exercise equipment. Recreational Services offers programs, trips and classes in the following program areas: Outdoor Adventure, Aquatics, Fitness and Wellness, Kent State Ice Arena, Club Sports and Intramural Sports The first two weeks of each semester is Demo Week - where all Group X and Instructional Programs are FREE to try. The mission of the Office of Health Promotion is to address high priority college health issues by providing ongoing special events, programs and services that promote and support health-enhancing behavior among students and the campus community. Special events include, but are not limited to, Alcohol Awareness Day, Great American Smoke-Out, World AIDS Day Week, 1Day Stand (tobacco), and Safe Spring Break KickOff Week. Screenings and services offered by the Office of Health promotion include: free HIV testing, tobacco cessation program, National Eating Disorders Screening Day, and National Alcohol Screening Day. The Office of Health Promotion works in partnership with a number of student organizations and departments in support of other campus outreach initiatives. The office sponsors LifeShare blood drives on campus where one $500 scholarship is generated for every 40 units of blood collected during the academic year. TELL YOUR STUDENTS... The Office of Health Promotion is located in the DeWeese Health Center and is available as a resource for students to utilize for health education resources for class projects, papers, etc. The office offers free HIV testing and a free tobacco cessation program for students. Internships are available for students who are in a health related major. The Office of Health Promotion plans and implements programs to address high priority college health issues. The office sponsors LifeShare blood drives on campus where one $500 scholarship is generated for every 40 units of blood collected during the academic year. PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES OF UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. INSTRUCTORS SHOULD KNOW... The staff of Kent State University Psychological Services are licensed mental health clinicians who are dedicated to supporting students to promote wellness, personal growth, and academic success. Confidential services to students include crisis intervention, individual, couple and group therapy, psychological testing and substance abuse evaluation and treatment. Kent State University’s Psychological Service: Psychological Services Staff is committed to providing personalized counseling services in a private and confidential setting. Students can call 330.672.2487 and be sure that they will be offered an appointment at the earliest time available to speak to their therapist. Private offices are located on second floor of the DeWeese Health Center. Kent State University’s Collegiate Recovery Community: It strives to offer support services to students who are in recovery or seeking recovery from substance use disorders, such as alcohol, marijuana, opiates, and other drugs. We offer substance use assessments, individual counseling, a support group (Empowering Students in Recovery), a social programming series (Time to THRIVE), a student organization (Flashes for Recovery), and sponsor campus events to promote awareness and education around substance use concerns. Flashes for Recovery: A student organization that engages the campus and larger community in a positive conversation about substance use. It seeks to support the campus community by raising awareness and reducing stigma. Members have the opportunity to connect with other students, sponsor and engage in fun events, be of service to the KSU and Kent community, and offer support to students in recovery and their allies. Outreach Programming: Our outreach program specialist is here to provide psychoeducational programs on mental health and wellness.
