Lutheran High School Association of St. Louis “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 On behalf of the Lutheran High School Association, I bring you greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord and Savior!

I thank God for the opportunity He has given me to serve in the role of Interim President for the Lutheran High School Association. I thank God for the ministry that is provided by dedicated Christian faculty and staff to the students and families. God continues to richly bless our Lutheran High Schools.

I want to thank all the alumni and friends of Lutheran North and South for your generous support through your prayers and gifts.

With the end of 2016 came the completion of the Facilities Study which sets the stage for a comprehensive Strategic Planning process that will move our Lutheran High Schools into the future.

LHSS National Merit Semifinalist Congratulations to Lauren Huebner S'17 who was named a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program for her performance on the PSAT/NMSQT assessment which she took in October 2015 as a junior. Her score was in the top 1% of the more than 1.6 million students nationwide who took the test. She will continue in the competition for the very prestigious National Merit Scholarships to be announced later this year.

Auction Thank You! The 38th Annual Fantasy Faire Auction on November 19 raised $135,000 for the ministry of our schools! A special thanks to chairpersons Rick and Chris Buescher Knight N'86 along with our donors, sponsors, volunteers and Auction attendees. We also thank Jeff Bernthal S'86 for serving as our emcee for the evening. We are already looking forward to the 2017 Auction on Saturday, November 18!

This year, 2017, will be a year of “opportunities” for our Lutheran High Schools.

An Endowment Highlight

As a lasting tribute to parents Arthur and Ruby Baisch, their children set up an endowment fund in 2011 to honor their parents' love of Lutheran South and specifically the music program.

Art and Ruby spent many hours enjoying the concerts presented by the LHSS bands that included their grandchildren.

Through the significant initial donation to Lutheran South, which is invested, a portion of the Baisch Memorial Music Scholarship Fund income is used each year to provide renewable scholarships to incoming freshmen who have been selected to participate in Wind Symphony.

Senior Leketor Member-Meneh led the Lady Lancer Volleyball team to the State

Championship. She will play Division I volleyball next year for the Missouri Tigers. She was named Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association (MHSVCA) Missouri Volleyball Player of the Year, the Post-Dispatch All-Metro Girls Volleyball Player of the Year and High School AllAmerican, third team.

The Lancer Girls Volleyball team won the first-ever Volleyball State Championship for Lutheran South on Oct. 29, defeating Pleasant Hill 25-23, 25-21 in the Class 3 championship match. The Lancers (34-3-3) claimed their first championship in their fifth final-four appearance. Coach Carol Reinitz marked her 500th win during the season. Leketor Member-Meneh S'17 and Samantha Brinkman S'17 were named to first team All-State; Livia Sandt S'19 was selected to second team All-State.

As the Lady Lancers competed for the State Volleyball title, the Lancer Boys Soccer team was securing a trip to State with a sectional win in overtime against Bayless.

The following weekend they took 3rd place in State with a 1-1 tie in their final game against O'Hara after losing their bid for the championship with an overtime loss to John Burroughs 3-2.

Crusader Cross Country Two Crusaders, Joel Brutlag N'17 and Issac Stout N'19, qualified for Cross Country State with Stout earning All-State honors.

He finished 25th with a time of 17:36:09.

LHS 1951 Don Ruedlinger, President and Founder of Youth Basketball of America, was awarded the 2016 National Council of Youth Sports (NCYS) Icon Award on September 12 during the National Council of Youth Sports CEO Leadership and Insurance Summit in Overland Park, Kansas.

NCYS honored Donald for his many years of exemplary service to the youth sports industry.

He was the award's first recipient.

LHS 1954 Karen Miller Weseloh and her husband Rev. Melvin Weseloh have been married 59 years. They live in Minier, Illinois, and have 4 children (David, Debra, Diane and Daryl) and 6 grandchildren (Heather [Jake], Dale, Kristine, Adam, Ryan and Logan.) Karen has been active in LWML since 1958, holding offices on the local, zone and district levels and attending 14 LWML conventions. She enjoys LWML and retreats for pastors' wives.

LHS 1960 Ruth Streufert Schwane and her husband John live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. John is a retired teacher. They have 7 children and 11 precious grandchildren. Ruth writes, "You'll never meet anyone more blessed by our Lord than me! I could never thank him enough!" Email: jrschwane@cox.net

NORTH 1980 Barbara Schultz is holding down two jobs that she loves. Her main job is as a veterinary assistant and receptionist for Animal House Veterinary Hospital in Arnold, Missouri. She also works part time at a garden center. Both jobs keep her busy, along with getting in a four-mile walk to work and home. Her brother is Nick Schultz N'77. Email: schultzieb@msn.com.

SOUTH 1985 Jeff White has accepted a position as Associate Director of Music at Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Louis. He will share organ duties with Music Director Wes Kassulke on the new 52-rank Schantz pipe organ and direct the Trinity Adult Choir. Jeff is also employed at MasterCard where he leads a global support team for the commercial products division. He is a ringer in the Gateway Ringers, an auditioned handbell ensemble. NORTH 1968 Bradford Von Wurmb is enjoying retirement in Spring Hill, Florida, after working as a social worker for 20 years. He enjoys weekly kayaking and writes, "Life is good. I will not live long enough to have all the fun I'm having." Email: wurmbmanor@gmail.com

SOUTH 1973 Gary Hoemann was inducted into the Westminster College Athletics Hall of Fame in October. He graduated summa cum laude from Westminster in 1977 and was named Athlete of the Year, ending his basketball career as the all-time leading scorer and in a tie for second in rebounds.

SOUTH 2004 Dr. Josh Akers and wife Laura Day Akers N'04 live in Omaha, Nebraska, with sons Earl and Teddy, ages 4 and 2. Dr. Akers recently began his fourth year as a residential pathologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This year he was named chief pathologist. He will start a fellowship in forensic science in Chicago at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office in July 2017. Josh's siblings are Chris Akers S'00 and

Jenny Akers Clark S'07.

NORTH 2005 Danielle Anderson owns Contrary Cupcakes, a 12-seat Southampton bake shop, where she serves custom cakes, cookies and mini cupcakes in flavors like banana split-red velvet, green tea frappuccino, peaches and cobbler, pancakes and bacon, margarita-lime and cookie dough. The shop is at 4904 Devonshire in St. Louis.

Andy Mansfield and his wife Stephanie announce the birth of their first child, son Connor Vernon Mansfield, born September 25, 2016. Andy and Stephanie are financial advisors and have a joint financial planning practice with Northwestern Mutual in St. Louis.

Dan Schmidtke graduated from Valparaiso University in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. He then attended Brown Mackie College in South Bend, Indiana, earning an associate's degree in applied science as a physical therapist assistant. He is working as a PT assistant at STAR Rehab with John Motley, former football trainer at Lutheran North.

Dan is also a basketball official, middle school basketball coach and an active player in the St. Louis Nites Police basketball league. His brothers are Mike Schmidtke N'07 and Nathaniel Schmidtke N'10.

SOUTH 2005 Chris Tiefenbrunn recently passed a 5 day/9 part test to qualify as a Chief Mate/1st Mate with Rowan Companies, a global provider of offshore contract drilling services in the "ultradeepwater" and shallow water market. Chris is currently working as a 2nd mate on the drill ship, Rowan Relentless. He's a 2009 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in marine transportation. After graduation he immediately went through testing to attain his 3rd Mate's license with the Coast Guard. He has enjoyed traveling to many countries while working on ships, moving up to 2nd Mate while working at sea. He continues to train and pass certifications.

His brother is Alex Tiefenbrunn S '08.

Andrew Wanko serves as public historian at the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis. He co-directed the documentary film, "Show Me 66: Main Street through Missouri" which debuted in November 2016 in conjunction with the museum`s current exhibition, Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis. The free exhibit runs

through July 16, 2017. Andrew's brother is Greg Wanko S'07 and sister-in-law is Kellie Gruenwald Wanko S'07.

NORTH 2006 Genese Gee Schmidtke and her husband Mike Schmidtke N'07 are proud to announce the arrival of their first child, Joseph Simeon Schmidtke, born July 14, 2016. Mike started his new job at Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission in Arlington, Virginia, on September 1, 2016.

NORTH 2008 Andrew Peters and his wife Shanese Weaver Peters announce the birth of their son, Josiah Lee Peters, born December 8, 2016. Josiah joins siblings Amiyah and Jaylen. Andrew is the Student Billing Representative for the Lutheran High School Association in St. Louis.

SOUTH 2009 Katie Schmidt married Tom Blake of St. Louis on November 5, 2016. The wedding party included

matron of honor Becky Vasel Odegard S'09 and Katie's brother, groomsman Steve Schmidt S'11.

NORTH 2010 Dr. Nathan Wesche graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy degree) in May 2016. During college he was very active in music and theatre, performing in 12 plays and musicals and playing bass clarinet in the Compton Heights Concert Band. After graduating from pharmacy school he took a job with Shopko in Park Falls in northern Wisconsin.

He is the pharmacist-in-charge (being the only regularly scheduled pharmacist) and pharmacy manager. During his limited free time Nathan likes to kayak and occasionally fish; he recently became a shareholder at a local pub. Nathan's siblings are Becky Wesche Filipek N'03, Maria Wesche Meyer N'05 and Danny Wesche N'08.

At Concordia, he was a regular starter on the basketball team and will bring his love of athletics to River Roads with the added duties of athletic director. Nathaniel Schmidtke N'10 graduated from Concordia University-St. Paul in May and began his first call as a Lutheran Teacher, teaching fourth and fifth grade at King of Kings Lutheran School in Roseville, Minnesota.

He was commissioned in St. Louis, by his father, Rev. John Schmidtke, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Nathaniel's siblings are Mike Schmidtke N'07 and Daniel Schmidtke N'05.

North Class of 2010 Grads Celebrate with Schmidtke

Josh announce the birth of their first child, son Braxton, born December 3, 2015. They live in Carrollton, Georgia, where they both work at the University of West Georgia, an NCAA Division II school. Jessica is a health services registered dietitian and Josh is defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the school's football program. Jessica's brother is Thomas Heimrich S'09.

Planning for the Future: An Update STRATEGIC PLANNING The LHSA strategic facilities planning initiative has entered the next phase as the Board of Trustees takes the information gathered through the facility assessments, focus groups and interviews to develop a strategic plan, including the review of the mission statement and values.

The Board's Facility Planning Committee has been partnering with the consultants from Zwick and Gandt Architecture in St. Louis, and the Meitler firm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who specialize in faith-based school planning. A final report presenting the data conclusions and consultants’ recommendations was presented to the Facilities Planning Committee and the LHSA Board at the end of 2016.

LHSA PRESIDENT'S POSITION The Board of Trustees Call Committee, led by Board member Jonathan Schultz, has begun the process of calling a new president for the Lutheran High School Association. BUILDING ON OPPORTUNITIES Principals Brian Ryherd at Lutheran South and Tim Brackman at Lutheran North are actively pursuing new ways to continue to build on the superior Christian education we provide today including: • offering online courses • expanding the content of existing programs • adding additional Advanced Placement (AP) options • enabling ways to expand the geographic access to the schools • implementing programs to increase the opportunities for students to improve their knowledge in key subjects • other initiatives in the early conceptual stage that have the potential to significantly differentiate our schools

News & Events

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM SUCCESS The International Program is doing well with 24 students in the home stay program and 10 international students staying with U.S. relatives. This continues to be a great opportunity to bring Jesus Christ into the lives of young people!

LHS Class of 1956 Reunion

The LHS Class of 1956 held their 60-year reunion on October 7, 2016, at the Lodge at Grant's Trail.

The LHSN Class of 1966 held their 50-year reunion on September 30 and October 1, 2016.

The Friday night meet and greet was at Standard Brewing Company and the Saturday night party was held at the home of Don and Brenda Tritch Nierman. The class members enjoyed visiting and catching up!

LHSS Class of 1966 Celebrates 50

Reunions & Events

What is the big deal of a “50th Anniversary?” After all, a 50th occurs every year for someone or something. But for the Lutheran High School South Class of 1966, which officially celebrated its milestone over Labor Day weekend, looking back was very special.

High school graduation was not the only big event in 1966. In that year new Busch Stadium opened (now replaced with an even newer Busch Stadium), the Astrodome was built, Star Trek debuted, the Dow Jones hit a record 995 points, Medicare and the Pill were introduced, and our generation, the Baby Boomers, was named Time magazine’s “Man of the Year.”

The baby boomer Class of 1966 had 145 graduates. Twelve of their classmates are now with their Lord. A total of 52 classmates (about 40% of the remaining 133 graduates) attended one or both of the evening events on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday night 40 classmates plus spouses gathered at Mike Duffy’s in Kirkwood for a fun and casual evening of reconstructing the LHSS years while concealing efforts to put a name with the face (name tags included each alum’s photo from the ’66 yearbook). Duffy’s provided a buffet of pizzas, pastas, salad and toasted ravioli.

On Saturday, a group of about 35 renewed memories at the Lutheran South campus.

Principal Brian Ryherd reviewed the progress and recent additions at South with a 90-minute tour of new building facilities and the superb improvements and enlargement of the outdoor athletic complex. Some of the faculty members from 1962-66 also joined the group for the tour.

The weekend celebration was capped Saturday evening with a delightful dinner buffet at Orlando’s Event Center in Maryland Heights. Almost 80 classmates, spouses, and faculty attended.

Ted Greenwald, who forced himself into his old letter sweater, read the class prophesies of the classmates in attendance, some of which actually came true. Current principal, Brian Ryherd and interim president of the Lutheran High School Association, Bill Cochran, addressed the group before dinner.

We were honored that ten faculty

members plus spouses joined us for the evening including Elaine Eggerding, widow of Principal Roland Eggerding. Faculty in attendance were Tom Johnson, Carol Hrivnak Kohlmeier, Rev. Richard LaBore, Elizabeth Marring Spencer, Anne Strieter Mangelsdorf, Herman Meyer, Richard Otto, Roy Pfund, Robert Toepper, and Art Schroeder.

Much of the weekend conversation revolved around the dedication of the faculty and how they helped all of us grow in faith and wisdom. The large number of graduates attending the weekend’s events is a testament to how much Lutheran South meant to all of us.

The weekend officially ended with Sunday worship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Des Peres, and a lunch following the service.
