LYDIA CHO October 19, 2013 This was the day where I was replacing my friend. She wasn't old enough for the supposed Dokdo presentation so I had to fill in for her. I was in a classroom with three other students and a few teachers. I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that it was about Dokdo, and I would be doing an essay on it. I sat there for three hours not knowing what was going on. The teachers were going over topics. Everybody chose their own and we were told to write a draft about that topic and send it to the teachers by October 25th. I started to understand more about what was going on. The teachers were going to read our drafts and discuss them next time we all met, which is October 26th. October 24, 2013 I started to plan my essay this day. I read over the book the teachers provided for us which was Ten Truths about Dokdo. There was a good amount of information to write about one page, but I needed three. Therefore, internet was the answer. I searched up some websites and videos to learn more about Dokdo. There was also this one page in which it had all the information about my topic question. It was like a miracle from heaven. The website was created by an organization in Korea trying to stop Japanese from taking away Dokdo. The information there was simple but professional. I read through the whole website, took some notes, and I was ready to write. October 25, 2013 I started to write my essay this day. The reason being, I'm a huge procrastinator. I fell asleep after gathering information. I had all the information; I just had to type it. When I was finished, I sent the file to the teachers instantly. Then, I noticed my spell check wasn't on and I had a lot of grammar mistakes. I didn't even get the format right. Thus again, I sent it to the teachers 2 more times and I finally relaxed. October 26, 2013 I received about five emails telling me to alter my essay. I forgot to do the APA format. I didn't know what APA format was so I waited until the next meeting to discuss it.

7

October 26, 2013 At Korean school, I received a whole lecture about APA format. I was probably the only person who didn't know what it was. After the lecture, we discussed our topic question. We had a whole list on it. We erased the ones we didn't like, altered the ones were okay, and kept the ones that we did like. Everyone agreed on a topic question. Then, we went over how we needed to revise our essays again. The next due date for our essay was October 27th by midnight. October 27, 2013 I revised my essay, added citations, and sent it to the teachers again. Thankfully, I finished. November 2, 2013 The essay was completely finished. We all met up again and we were told that we had to write a journal. We received the requirements and the due date which was November 5th by midnight. November 5, 2013 Here I am, finishing my journal, procrastinating again. I worked on this for about 30 minutes. This was a lot easier than the essay, I can tell you that. But, before I finish, I would like to say, why we were told so late about this? We only had about 2 weeks to finish this. I was also the last person to be told about this so I had a little bit more pressure. Although we all had to rush, I'm glad all four of us were able to finish this. And I'm also thanking the teachers about telling me what was wrong so I can fix it to make it even better. This was an amazing experience to go through since I usually don't participate in these kinds of events. It taught me a lot about Dokdo and I was able to make more friends in Korean school. Even though everything was stressed and rushed, I'm glad that everyone was able to finish. National Association of Korean School, thank you for making this event.

JULIE CHUN October 19, 2013 On October 19, three of my classmates and I were first introduced to the Dokdo essay held by the National Association of Korean School. At Korean school, we spent three hours talking about the topic. We came up with a list of question topics and assigned everyone in the group a topic to focus on. After reviewing the question and topics we had to write about, we set a date for the draft to be written by to pace ourselves and get the research paper done by the due date. We were to finish our draft by October 25 and to send it to our teachers so they could read it over and gather thoughts to discuss it the next time we would be meeting for Korean school which is October 26. October 24, 2013 This was the day I started planning my research essay. I read over the question that was supposed to be answers before I started so I could stay on topic. To begin my research essay, I had to start my research. I read the book, The Ten Truths about Dokdo, first. There was a lot of good information in the book; however, there wasnรข€™t a sufficient amount of details so I decided to do more research online. I researched questions I had to be able to write more in my essay. After changing the topic I found a lot of great websites that had a lot of information the writer got from reliable sources. I noticed that one of the websites was published by the same publisher as the book I read earlier. I wrote down all the research information I needed to start my essay.

October 25, 2013 I started writing my essay on October 25 because I didnรข€™t have a lot of free time during the weekday due to a lot of school work. I had the basis for my essay. I just needed to add my opinion and transitions to finish it. After I finished drafting, I read it over to check for grammar and consistency and checked to make sure I cited sources correctly. Once that was completed, I sent it to my teachers. It was a lot of work, but I was glad that I was able to finish my draft on time. October 28, 2013 At Korean school we discussed the topic question again. From the list of questions and topics, we modified and then chose one topic question that we liked the best. After everyone agreed upon the topic question, we went over what needed to be added to meet the requirements for the essay. We each revised 9

our essays and checked for the correct citation. The due date we set for this to be done is on October 27 by midnight. October 29, 2013 After communicating with the teachers via email and at Korean school, we completed our essay. It had been put together, revised, and then approved by all of us. Everyone worked diligently to get the essay done. Everything had been revised and edited and we were able to finish everything by having due dates set for ourselves. November 2, 2013 Today all we have left to meet the requirements for the essay is the journal. At Korean school we started writing and some were able to finish writing the journal. We worked on this for about an hour. After evaluating the process we had done to complete the essay I thought two things. First, I wish that our Korean school had an earlier notice about this Dokdo essay. We found out about the competition on October 29 and we only had two weeks to complete it. We were all pushed for time; however, we were able to finish the essay and didnรข€™t give up. I think that the content of our essay would have been better if we had more time to research. Secondly, I am glad that I was able to be apart of the essay and experience this even though we were pushed for time. It taught me a lot about Dokdo and that we were capable of doing anything we set our minds to. I am thankful for my teachers who helped revise and edit our essay and for my classmates who also worked hard to get their part done. Even though we started off a little late, we were able to complete and submit an essay for the Dokdo essay competition as students of our Korean school.

EUGENE KIM I contributed to the paper by researching and writing a section of the main body, "IV. Japan claims: That the Republic of Korea is illegally occupying Dokdo", and made some revisions to the paper. Before doing this project, I had heard some pieces and opinions of what was happening about Dokdo, but wasn't completely sure on the thorough details, and who is right. While doing this project, I learned many new things about one of our country's issues. I learned what is really happening between Korea and Japan, and why it is happening. I learned that Japan is illegally trying to occupy Dokdo, while Korea has a long history of having territorial rights over Dokdo. I think our team did great on putting everyone's sections together, and writing the Abstract, Introduction, and the Conclusion. The whole process was an amazing opportunity to learn more about Korea's history and present situation, and to gain thorough knowledge about Dokdo, an important issue in Korea. I'm very glad I chose to work on this project, because now I know all about Dokdo. I will retain the information I learned and use it in the future if there are every any issues around me on Dokdo.

DOYLE YOON September 28, 2013 This day was when we had our Dokdo first seminar called ten truths about Dokdo not known in Japan. The speaker, Dr. Kwak from northeast Asian History Foundation, came to our Korean school to speak about Japanโ€™s false claims on Dokdo. October 19, 2013 On October 19th my classmates and I got together to start discussing about how we were going to write the essay for National Association of Korean School (NAKS). We spent two to three hours asking each other questions and coming up with our topic sentence for our essays. Then we were each assigned a topic to focus on. I chose the topic to write about why Korea had the right not to refer this dispute over Dokdo to the international court of justice. The deadline for the rough draft was the 26th October 25, 2013 I started brain storming on how I was going to pull a three paged essay based on this little information that I had in the book. Then I realized I had chosen the hardest topic out of all ten of them. I knew the reason why Korean government refuses to take the case to the I.C.J. was because it was our land and we had the control over it. However, knowing that claiming Dokdo as our land without any evidence to support my thesis wasnโ€™t going to prove anything, I started researching the laws of the I.C.J. October 26, 2013 In Korean school, we discussed about our topic questions, getting rid of the ones that we didnโ€™t need. I was very frustrated because I didnโ€™t even have my rough draft finished. My topic just got even more confusing for me as I got into the details. Everyone else had their paper to revise, making them fit to the requirement for the essay. Thankfully I was told I had to get it turned in on the 27th . This gave me an extra day to get my work done.

October 27, 2013 I started writing at about 9:30 pm. It wasnโ€™t fun writing a research paper by myself while both of my brothers was downstairs playing games and enjoying their so called โ€œWork Free Sunday Night.โ€ I remember I had to scream at them at least five times because they were both screaming as if it was their first time on a rollercoaster. The time when I finally got to focus on my essay was when they both fell asleep. It was about 10:45 pm and I was so mad that I still had two more pages to write about. Thanks to my parents I got helped tremendously and was able to finish by 2 in the morning. My parents still told me I had to go to school that day which was a little aggravating but I was glad that I finally got it over with. November 6, 2013 Now I am writing my journal. This was so much easier than the essay and was less time consuming since it is all based off of my experience. I actually had more fun writing the journal than the essay itself. Yet I am glad that I got to learn not only about Dokdo but the basic history behind it.
