Celosvetovú umelecko-kartografickú súťaž pre deti Barbara Petchenik Children`s World Map Competition organizuje Medzinárodná kartografická asociácia od roku 1993. Je venovaná kartografke Barbare Bartz Petchenik, ktorá sa zaoberala tvorbou máp a atlasov pre deti. Cieľom súťaže je podporovať tvorivé stvárnenie sveta v grafickej podobe deťmi. Tento rok si pripomíname 30 rokov od začiatku organizovania súťaže.

Kartografická spoločnosť Slovenskej republiky (KS SR) v spolupráci s Geografickým ústavom Slovenskej akadémie vied, v. v. i. (GgÚ SAV) organizuje v dvojročných cykloch národné kolá tejto súťaže pod názvom „Detská mapa sveta“. Súťaž je určená pre deti od 4 do 15 rokov.

Kresby sú skvelým príkladom toho, ako deti vnímajú svet a problémy okolo nás a ako svoje pocity prenesú do obsahu mapy. Mapy odrážajú umelecké, sociálne a kartografické povedomie detí. Deti využívajú v rámci tvorby mapy rôzne techniky kreslenia a maľovania. V posledných ročníkoch pribúda počet máp vytvorených pomocou digitálnych techník alebo kombináciou digitálnych a ručných kresliacich techník.

KS SR a národný koordinátor súťaže vynakladajú enormné úsilie na propagáciu súťaže. Veríme, že do súťaže sa bude zapájať čoraz väčší počet detí a že kvalita reprodukcie máp a interpretácia myšlienok budú hodnotiteľov aj naďalej prekvapovať. Dúfame, že touto súťažou sa zvýši záujem detí o podmanivý svet máp a rozšíri novú generáciu tvorcov máp a ich používateľov.

The Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition has been organised by the International Cartographic Association since 1993. It is dedicated to cartographer Barbara Bartz Petchenik, who was involved in creating maps and atlases for children. The goal of the competition is to support children’s creative representation of the world in a graphic form. This year we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the competition.

The Cartographic Society of the Slovak Republic, in cooperation with the Geographical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, organises national rounds of this competition under the name “Children’s Map of the World” in two-year cycles. The competition is intended for children aged 4 to 15.

The drawings are a great example of how children perceive the world and the problems around us and how they transfer their feelings into the form of a map. These maps reﬂect the artistic, social, and cartographic awareness of children. Children use various drawing and painting techniques to create a map. In recent years, the number of maps created using digital techniques or combining digital and hand drawing techniques has been increasing.

The Cartographic Society of the Slovak Republic and the national coordinator of the competition are making considerable efforts to promote this competition. We believe that an increasing number of children will participate in the competition and that the quality of map reproduction and the interpretation of ideas will continue to surprise the evaluators. We hope this competition will increase children’s interest in the fascinating world of maps and bring forth a new generation of map makers and users.

Popularizácia vedy, v našom prípade geografie a geografického výskumu, je dôležitou súčasťou aktivít vedeckých pracovníkov. Hoci geografia nie je iba o mapách, mapu považujeme za veľmi dôležitý prostriedok na vyjadrenie prírodných aj spoločenských javov v priestore. Tvorbe máp sa venuje predovšetkým kartografia, ktorá má s geografiou blízky vzťah. Geografický ústav SAV, v. v. i., sa preto v spolupráci s Kartografickou spoločnosťou Slovenskej republiky aktívne podieľa na pravidelnej organizácii súťaže Detská mapa sveta zastrešenej Medzinárodnou kartografickou asociáciou (ICA).

Organizovanie slovenského kola súťaže patrí k našim najdôležitejším popularizačným aktivitám už celé tri desaťročia. Tešíme sa, že do súťaže bolo poslaných už viac ako tisíc obrázkov, ktoré svedčia o záujme detí prezentovať ich vlastný pohľad na svet. Za organizáciou súťaže stoja najmä doc. RNDr. Ján Feranec, DrSc. a RNDr. Monika Kopecká, PhD., za čo by som im chcel vyjadriť svoje poďakovanie. Spolu s ďalšími kolegami sa zaslúžili o to, aby deti zo Slovenska mohli reprezentovať našu krajinu na celosvetovom podujatí. Ceníme si aj to, že medzinárodná porota zaradila viaceré z ich diel medzi najkrajšie vo svete.

The popularization of science, in our case, geography and geographical research, is an integral part of scientific activities. Although geography is not only about maps, we consider a map to be an essential means of expressing both natural and social phenomena in space. Cartography, which has a close relationship with geography, deals primarily with the creation of maps. Therefore, the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Cartographic Society of the Slovak Republic, actively participates in the regular organisation of the Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map competition sponsored by the International Cartographic Association (ICA).

Organising the Slovak round of the competition has been one of our most important popularisation activities for three decades. We are pleased that more than one thousand five hundred pictures have already been sent to the competition, which testifies to the children’s interest in presenting their own view of the world. The organisation of the competition is mainly supported by RNDr. Ján Feranec, DrSc. and RNDr. Monika Kopecká, PhD., to whom I would like to express my gratitude. Together with other colleagues, they have contributed to allowing children from Slovakia to represent our country at a global event. We also appreciate that the international jury has previously ranked several of their works among the most beautiful in the world.

Každé dieťa má svoje sny a predstavy, ktoré by rado v živote realizovalo. Deti sú plné nápadov a každý dobrý nápad môže byť základom ich tvorivosti. Kľúčovým aspektom pre kreativitu detí sú zábavné aktivity, pretože práve ich prostredníctvom sa učia prezentovať vlastné nápady a vízie. Detské pohľady z rôznych uhlov sú obohacujúce aj pre dospelých – prejavuje sa v nich slobodné, ničím nezaťažené myslenie, veľkorysosť a absencia strachu či premyslenej sebakritiky. Na realizáciu svojich nápadov deti potrebujú veľa príležitostí. Jednou z nich je aj súťaž Detská mapa sveta, ktorá im umožňuje skĺbiť ich tvorivosť s poznávaním sveta zábavnou formou.

Kreativita v kartografii spočíva v schopnosti meniť predstavy a vízie na realitu pri vytváraní originálneho dizajnu mapy. Spomedzi kartografov v tomto ohľade vynikala

Barbara Barz Petchenik (1939–1992), bývalá viceprezidentka Medzinárodnej kartografickej asociácie (ICA). Rozhovory s tisíckou detí zo základných škôl ju priviedli k poznaniu, že deti vnímajú mapy inak ako dospelí a že ich pohľad by mal byť zohľadnený pri návrhoch školských atlasov. Pochopila, že deti sú veľmi početná a dôležitá skupina používateľov máp a preto sa snažila tvoriť mapy, ktoré im zrozumiteľnou formou primeranou ich veku pomáhali spoznávať okolitý svet. Bola autorkou mnohých publikácií venovaných detským mapám a atlasom, ich dizajnu a využívaniu vo vzdelávacom procese. Pre jej významný prínos v tejto oblasti a na jej počesť začala ICA organizovať v roku 1993 súťaž s názvom Barbara Petchnik Children´s World Map Competition.

Cieľom tejto súťaže je podporiť deti v kreatívnom zobrazovaní sveta, zlepšiť ich kartografické vnímanie a prehĺbiť ich záujem o životné prostredie. V zmysle platných pravidiel môže každú členskú krajinu ICA reprezentovať šesť detských prác, ktoré posudzuje medzinárodná porota. Ocenenia sa udeľujú každé dva roky počas konferencie alebo valného zhromaždenia ICA. Súťaž je určená pre deti do 16 rokov a prebieha podľa pravidiel stanovených ICA. Pri hodnotení súťažných prác sa zohľadňujú nasledovné kritériá:

1. zrozumiteľné posolstvo – prepojenie kartografických prvkov s vyhlásenou témou daného ročníka súťaže,

2. kartografický obsah – zreteľný obraz celého sveta alebo jeho podstatnej časti a korektné proporčné znázornenie pevnín a oceánov primerané veku autora kresby,

3. kvalita spracovania – celková estetická hodnota súťažnej práce.

Every child has dreams and ideas they would like to realise in life. Children are full of ideas, and every good idea can help foster their creativity. Fun activities are a vital aspect of the creativity of children because these help them learn to present their own ideas and visions. Children’s views of things from different angles are also rewarding for adults - they show free thinking, generosity, and the absence of fear or deliberate self-criticism. Children require numerous opportunities to realise their ideas. One of these is the Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map competition, which allows them to combine their creativity with learning about the world in a fun way.

Creativity in cartography consists of the ability to realise ideas and visions when designing a map. Among cartographers, Barbara Barz Petchenik (1939-1992), the former vice-president of the International Cartographic Association (ICA), stood out in this respect. While interviewing a thousand elementary school children, she recognized that they do not approach maps in the same way as adults and that their distinct perspectives should be taken into account in the process of map design. She understood that children are a large and important group of map consumers therefore, she tried to create maps that helped them learn about the world around them in an understandable form appropriate to their age. She was the author of numerous publications devoted to children’s maps and atlases, their design, and their use in educational processes. To recognise her significant contribution to this field, the ICA started organising the Barbara Petchnik Children’s World Map Competition in her honour in 1993.

This competition aims to support children and youths in creatively depicting the world, improving their cartographic perception, and deepening their interest in the environment. According to the current rules, each country can be represented by six children’s works, which an international commission then judges. The awards are presented every two years during an ICA conference or general meeting. The competition is intended for children under the age of 16 and takes place according to the rules established by the ICA. The following criteria are considered when evaluating the competition entries:

1. A recognisable message – connection of cartographic elements with the declared theme of the given year of the competition

2. Cartographic content – a clear picture of the whole world or its essential part and a correct proportional representation of land and oceans appropriate for the age of the author of the drawing

3. Quality of execution – the overall aesthetic value of the competition entry.

Deti pri tvorbe hraníc kontinentov a štátov nesmú používať žiadne šablóny ani pomocné kartografické podklady. Mapy môžu byť vytvorené tradičnými metódami (napr. kresba, maľba, koláž) alebo s využitím počítačovej grafiky. Kým do roku 2011 boli súťažné práce posudzované v troch vekových kategóriách, od roku 2013 deti súťažia v štyroch kategóriách: do 6 rokov, 6 až 8 rokov, 9 až 12 rokov a nad 12 rokov. Výtvarné práce môžu byť zamerané na zachytenie mapy celého sveta alebo na zobrazenie jednotlivých štátov, prípadne kontinentov. Ocenené práce publikuje ICA a príležitostne sa môžu poskytnúť aj iným medzinárodným organizáciám (napr. UNICEF) za účelom tlače pohľadníc, kalendárov a iných publikácií.

V predchádzajúcich ročníkoch reprezentovalo Slovensko doteraz celkovo 75 výtvarných prác, z ktorých päť patrilo medzi najvyššie hodnotené. Na konferenciách ICA v Kolíne v roku 1993 a v Barcelone v roku 1995 sa medzi ocenenými prácami ocitli kresby Janky Ďurankovej z Novej Bane, v Pekingu v roku 2001 kresba Michaely Klimentovej zo Žarnovice, v roku 2019 v Tokiu tretie miesto získala Katarína Šáleková z Rajca a od dva roky neskôr tú istú školu rovnako úspešne reprezentoval len osemročný Pavol Rybár.

Detské kresby do súťaže posielajú členské organizácie ICA, medzi ktoré patrí aj Kartografická spoločnosť Slovenskej republiky, oslavujúca v roku 2023 30. výročie svojho založenia. Druhým dlhoročným spoluorganizátorom súťaže je Geografický ústav SAV, v. v. i., ktorý v roku 2023 oslávi 80 rokov svojho pôsobenia. Táto publikácia vznikla pri príležitosti uvedených dvoch významných jubileí. Prvú časť knihy tvoria kresby, ktoré reprezentovali Slovensko v medzinárodnom kole v rokoch 1993 – 2023. V ďalšej časti sú prezentované práce, ktoré sa umiestnili v celoslovenskom kole na 1.-3. mieste v jednotlivých vekových kategóriách, avšak do medzinárodného kola kvôli maximálnemu limitu na počet zaslaných prác za jednotlivé krajiny postúpiť nemohli.

Touto cestou chcem poďakovať José Jesusovi Reyes Nunezovi, Carle Sena a ďalším členom Komisie pre kartografiu a deti pri ICA za organizovanie tejto súťaže a povzbudzovanie záujmu mladej generácie o životné prostredie a environmentálne problémy. Ďalej chcem poďakovať za spoluprácu Sherri Sunstrum z Carleton University Library, kde sú uchovávané originály súťažných prác z predchádzajúcich ročníkov a to za poskytnutie kvalitných fotokópií starších prác zo Slovenska. Najväčšie poďakovanie však patrí učiteľom a rodičom, ktorí podporujú u detí originálne nápady a ich potenciál samostatne tvoriť, dokážu deti nadchnúť pre zmysluplné aktivity a správne ich usmerniť v umeleckej kreativite. Children may not use any templates or auxiliary cartographic materials when creating the borders of continents and countries. Maps can be created using traditional methods (e.g., drawing, painting, collage) or computer graphics. While the competition entries were judged in three age categories until 2011, children have competed in four categories since 2013: up to 6 years, 6 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, and over 12 years. The entries can aim to produce a map of the entire world or depict individual states or continents. The ICA publishes the prize-winning works which may occasionally be provided to other international organisations (e.g., UNICEF) for the purpose of printing postcards, calendars, and other publications.

In previous years, Slovakia has been represented by a total of 75 art works, five of which were among the highest-rated. In the first years of the competition, the drawings of Janka Ďuranková from Nova Bana were among the awarded works at the ICA conferences in Cologne in 1993 and in Barcelona in 1995. A drawing by Michaela Klimentová from Žarnovica was awarded in Beijing in 2001. In 2019 in Tokyo, Katarína Šáleková from Rajec won third place, and two years later, then only eight-year-old Pavol Rybár represented the same school just as successfully.

The children’s drawings are sent to the competition by member organisations of the ICA, including the Cartographic Society of the Slovak Republic which in 2023 is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The second co-organiser of the competition is the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Republic, which will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2023. This publication was created to recognise two important jubilees. The first part of the book consists of drawings that represented Slovakia in the international rounds between 1993 and 2023. The following part presents works that placed 1st-3rd in the national round in individual age categories, but which did not advance to the international round due to the maximum limit on the number of submitted works for individual countries.
