JCSC Foundation News The Senior Center Foundation is working on several projects: First Inaugural Pickleball Tournament to be held on November 2-3, 2018 and the Annual Christmas Box project for low income seniors. The Pickleball tournament is a fundraising event for JCSC Foundation and they have set a goal of 100 participants in this 2 day event. Entry deadline is October 24. There will also be a Pickleball Clinic by Ty Petty who is a National Doubles Pickleball Champion on Nov 1at 6:00 to help raise funds for the Foundation which provides support for Johnson City Senior Center, The goal for this year’s Christmas Box Project is 250 boxes. You will soon be receiving an appeal letter in the mail for donations towards the Christmas Box project. It costs approximately $60 for each Christmas box which is filled with food and other home supplies. Any amount of donation will be very much appreciated. We also need volunteers to help wrap, pack and deliver the boxes. If interested, please see our Volunteer Coordinator, Chyrl McLaughlin.

Hiking, Walkers & Talkers

Hip Hikers* Rattlesnake Lodge Swannanoa, NC Free • Thursday, October 4, 7:30a We will begin our hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway with a short, but steep (600ft) climb to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Turning left we wil reach the site of Rattlesnake Lodge, the former summer home of Asheville physician and outdoor activist Dr. Chase P. Ambler. The Amblers built their summer retreat in 1903 and occupied it until 1920. The Lodge is gone, gictim of a fire in the late 1920s. We will return to Ox Creek road pull-off to shuttle drivers for cars. The hike is rated moderate and is about 3 miles.

This will be a self-directed hike, meaning that there will be no staff leader. Each hiker is responsible for himself/herself. Please assess your physical ability as this will be a challenging hike. Be sure to pack a lunch. The group will carpool from MPCC and plan to return at 3:00pm.

Margarette Falls Greenville, TN Free • Thursday, October 11, 7:30a Even though this hike is only about 3 miles round trip and rated as moderate, the trail is more challenging due to rocky sections, steepness, creek crossings, and battered trail conditions. The falls are nestled in a beautiful niche at the end of the trail.

This will be a self-directed hike, meaning that there will be no staff leader. Each hiker is responsible for himself/herself. Please assess your physical ability as this will be a challenging 4 mile loop hike. Be sure to pack a lunch. The group will carpool from MPCC. AT from Summit Cut Hwy 58 to Creek Junction on the Virginia Creeper Trail SWVA Free • Thursday, October 25, 7:30a We have done part of this hike to Lost Mountain Shelter but will continue past the shelter over Lost Mountain and down to the Virginia Creeper Trail at Creek Junction. This hike is rated easy to moderate and will consist of about 4 miles.

This will be a self-directed hike, meaning that there will be no staff leader. Each hiker is responsible for himself/herself. Please assess your physical ability as this will be a challenging 4 mile loop hike. Be sure to pack a lunch. The group will carpool from MPCC.

Pick Through the Past-Assisting Research at the Gray Fossil Site Thursday, October 1110:30a Instructor: April Season Nye and students Cost: Free Ms. Nye, along with students will be back to present a program that includes an introductory PowerPoint reviewing the history of the Gray Fossil Site and a hands on activity in which the participants will search for and identify fossils to benefit active research. All found fossils will be added to the East TN Museum of Natural History collections housed in Gray, TN. Don’t miss out on this fun and interactive class.

Apple Festival-Erwin Saturday, October 6 Leave MPCC at 10a, return approx. 3p Cost: $1 The Unicoi County Apple Festival, drawing more than 110,000 annual attendees, has been consistently named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events in the southeast and is a three-year winner of the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association’s Pinnacle Award. This year’s festival includes over 350 arts and crafts vendors from around the country featuring painting, photography, wood-turning, sculpture, metal crafts, jewelry, blown glass and much more. A Walk in Their Boots at Tipton Haynes Historic Site Saturday, November 3 Leave MPCC at 10a, return approx. 1p Cost: Free A Walk in their Boots-A salute to the American Soldier is an all era living history event which focuses on the American Soldier through time from the Revolutionary War to the present. Through living history encampments, demonstrations and battle reenactments. During our visit we will see the Opening Ceremony - National Anthem, Weapons Demonstration from the Revolution to Vietnam, and Flag Retirement Ceremony.

FTAAAD & Resources for Seniors Cost: FREE

The first Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., care partners from Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and their loved ones living in the beginning to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia will gather together at the Johnson City Community Center, 510 Bert Street, for a new SPARK! program, a combination of fellowship and cultural programming, sponsored by Reece Museum and Alzheimer’s Tennessee.

SPARK! is an interactive program that will take place in a pressure-free environment with the goal of building new experiences, in place of simply trying to recall memories.

Specially trained Museum educators and Alzheimer’s Tennessee volunteers will engage participants in lively discussions, object handling and other multisensory activities. The SPARK! program will also include opportunities to work with artists and other groups throughout the community.

SPARK! is a safe and welcoming environment for participants and is equally beneficial for people living with memory loss and their care partners. The day begins in a private room where participants can make or renew introductions, eat lunch that is provided, and then the fun begins!

The SPARK! program is free of charge and open to the community. The initial maximum number of participants is 16, so we ask that all participants submit a reservation questionnaire as soon as possible. Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month Looking for a challenging workout? This class is a mix of shallow end and deep end aerobics. While in the deep end floatation belts are used to keep you afloat while doing exercises. The focus is on toning, cardiovascular strength, endurance and core work. No swimming skills are needed.

A doctor’s clearance is required before participating in the class.

Therapy Pool Schedule: Adult Only Open Therapy Adults & Seniors M-W-F 7-10a; T & Th 7-11a; M-W-F 6-8:45p; Sat 9-11a Cost: $2 per visit or $25 per month (Free to Silver Sneaker® participants) An adult only time for therapy that you can engage in activities of your choice to fit your therapeutic needs. This pool is for low impact swimming. You will not be allowed to jump, splash or make big waves.

Silver Sneakers® Splash Seniors Instructor: Heidi Perry T & Th 11:45a-12:45p Cost: $3 per class (Free to Silver Sneaker® participants) A fun low impact program geared toward senior citizens looking to improve the quality of their social life and physical well-being.

Arthritis Class Adults & Seniors Instructor: Heidi Perry T & Th 11-11:40a Cost: $3 per class This class will help you get your gears moving, not grinding in the morning with an expertly tailored workout. Arthritis class is instructed by an American Arthritis Foundation certified instructor. All equipment is provided. A doctor’s note is required but you are welcome to try a class without the note and bring one to the next session.

Silver Sneakers® Circuit Fridays, 10a Cost: $3 (Free for Silver Sneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Deb Fogle This class is designed to increase cardiovascular endurance and improve strength. This is a low impact class which offers upper body strengthening. Participant should possess consistent skills in agility, coordination and balance.

Classic Level 1 features a slower pace than other Silver Sneakers® classes. Increase muscular strength, range of movement and practice activities for daily living.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence-based, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching,

breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. With adjustments the exercises are appropriate for individuals of all physical conditions and can be done seated in a chair.

Qigong Mondays and Wednesdays, 12p Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair.

FUNdamentals of Yoga Wednesdays, 6p Cost: $5 Instructor: Carrie Maggard Learn proper alignment, poses, breathing and more all while having FUN! This is a safe environment to empower, educate and inspire you to live healthier and happier lives.

Designed with beginners and older adults in mind but all are welcome to enjoy this restorative practice.

Zumba Zeniors Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10a Cost: $3 Instructor: LeAnna Lawson LeAnna is a licensed Zumba instructor who will provide a low impact Zumba class designed for beginners of all ages and active older adults. Come enjoy this fun way to increase your daily activity. Even if you have never done Zumba before, you will want to try out this class.

Strength & Sculpt Thursdays, 10:45a Cost: $2 Instructor: Leanna Lawson The main focus of this class will be on strength training to maintain muscular strength and improve bone strength/ prevent bone loss. The class will also utilize a variety of movements and exercises to work on balance and core stability.

Outshine Fitness Fridays, 8:30-9:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls This outdoor workout is a great class to add to your fitness regimen. By combining an outdoor walk/run with weighted exercises, this class shows instant results! The class features a “go at your own pace” format, so it welcomes all varieties of fitness levels. As your energy level and strength increase, so will the difficulty of the class.

Physiology and Fitness Video Series Thursday October 4 and October 18, 1p Cost: Free Facilitator: Lauren Qualls Join us for a 30 minute video followed by discussion of topics addressed.

Brain-a-Cise Thursdays, 3:30p Cost: Free Your brain needs exercise just as much as your body. Join us as we form a trivia team to compete in this year’s Senior Brain Games!

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy.
