Crowd surpasses 18,000 at Beau’s Oktoberfest

Keep Calm. And Oktoberfest On. This year’s Oktoberfest was a two-day festival of beer, music, food and fun contests set against a backdrop of balmy sunny weather. The key charities this year were United Way Eastern Ontario, which benefitted from the Charity Bike Ride, and Hidden Harvest, a not-for-profit organization from Ottawa which built and operated the Midway Games at Oktoberfest. Fundraising totals were to be released later this week, but with the great turnout and improved Friday weather, Beau’s spokespersons say they expect it to be more than last year. Beau’s sold a record number of tickets at the gate, which the company attributes to

the beautiful weather.

What was the most popular beer? Lug Tread held that position, followed by Night Marzen. This year was quite a comeback for Oktoberfest; in 2018, a tornado warning forced the cancellation of Friday evening events and Beau’s promised 2019 passes to the Friday night ticket-holders.

This year, it gave out 2,200 complimentary passes to those who were affected by last year’s tornado warning and severe weather. See more photos inside.

DRIVE YOUR TRACTOR TO SCHOOL DAY

SCHOOL DEMOLITION

Thursday, September 19 was Drive Your Tractor to School Day at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI). There were 13 tractors in the VCI parking lot that day belonging to students and staff.

The school decided to have the day in September because many of the students who wanted to participate will be on co-op placements and away from class in the spring semester. This year’s Drive Your Tractor to School Day was held on the same day as VCI’s Grade Nine Welcome Day for new students. See more photos inside this issue.

The Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’est ontarien tore down the front portion of the school but is keeping a rear portion on the property for storage, for the time being. The school was closed several years ago and local students were transferred to École St-Grégoire in Vankleek Hill.

Wentworth mayor responds to resort-related criticisms Review contributor

WENTWORTH – “A genuine campaign of fear and misinformation,” is what the Township of Wentworth is calling actions by the Lake Louisa Property Owners Association (LLPOA) over a possible resort development in the municipality.

At a raucous council meeting on September 9, the LLPOA questioned if the municipality and Mayor Jason Morrison were enabling developer Oliver Tham and his interest in building a recreational resort on a 1,550-acre property. Morrison was not present at the meeting.

The LLPOA has called for Morrison’s resignation and has been critical of zoning changes made in September 2018 that facilitate recreational tourism activities in Wentworth.

In an interview on September 19, Morrison said he has no intention of resigning and that the reason for a June 2018 meeting (where a photo was taken of him sitting next to Tham) was held because the developer wanted to introduce himself and had nothing to do with zoning changes.

The municipality has formally demanded that the LLPOA withdraw misleading

information from its website and called the actions of the LLPOA an unacceptable attack on the reputation of the mayor, council, and township staff.

According to Morrison and the municipality, most of the changes resulted from the need to comply with the new Québec land use planning policy known as Orientation 10, according to Morrison and a news release issued by the township on September 13, 2019.

Morrison emphasized that public consultations, including a meeting that was not required by provincial law, were held during the

Morrison emphasized that no official project has been deposited with the municipality yet and that it is still not known if the property has been sold to Tham.

The LLPOA objects to a golf course being part of the resort over concerns that fertilizer and pesticide runoff would contaminate Lake Louisa. The township news release stated that new laws are in place requiring golf course developers to re-capture all runoff.

While the township is accusing the LLPOA’s leadership of acting in “blatant

bad faith,” another property owners association is supporting the municipality. On September 21, the Dunany Community Association’s (DCA) board stated its support for the mayor and council’s efforts to balance “reasonable development” with environmental protection.

The statement also rebuked the LLPOA and emphasized that the DCA does not want to be associated with the actions members of the organization have taken.

The municipality is promising to continue consultations with residents on the resort proposal.

Counties reveal proposed transit routes for Champlain and Hawkesbury

GRENVILLE – Slow but steady wins the race—or gets lost in someone’s backyard.

That’s what happened to a big turtle

on Tuesday morning, September 27 in Grenville. Sarah Lacasse-Dwyer went into her backyard to bring her dog Renoir inside and noticed the dog seemed distressed.

She then looked un-

derneath a table and noticed a snapping turtle that she estimated was a foot and a half long.

“How did the turtle get there?” she wondered.

Lacasse-Dwyer’s home is near the Grenville Canal, but its banks are really steep for a turtle to climb. She guessed it must have gradually travelled from the marsh at the end of Grenville Bay on the Ottawa River, or it walked from the river

using the bridge that crosses the canal.

She said the turtle seemed tired.

Lacasse-Dwyer loves animals and had rescued turtles from precarious situations before. She lifted it off the ground using the back of its shell and walked it into a tipped wheelbarrow on its front legs.

Then, she pushed the wheelbarrow over to the canal and gently turned it on its side in order to ease the

big snapper into the water.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada maintains a website for its turtle protection program in Québec. It gathers turtle sightings from the public so it can maintain a database and focus its protection efforts. The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round, and the routes they could follow in Prescott-Russell are now public.

At the Champlain Township council meeting on September 10, United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) Tourism and Economic Development Director Carole Lavigne discussed the proposed routes for the new intermunicipal transportation system, which is being branded as PR Transpo.

Lavigne explained to council the results of a survey indicating what the rate of usage for the new system could be and the reasons why residents would use it. The findings of that survey were previously presented to UCPR council in the spring of 2019.

Twelve routes are being proposed for PR Transpo that would operate on

different days of the week. In Champlain and Hawkesbury, three routes are being considered. One of them would connect Hawkesbury with L’Orignal, Alfred, Plantagenet, and St-Isidore on Thursdays.

Three other routes would connect Vankleek Hill, Hawkesbury, St-Eugène, and St-Anne de Prescott on Tuesdays and Fridays. The proposed routes follow a series of municipal, county, and provincial roads.

Lavigne provided a list of Route “J” which will link Vankleek Hill and Hawkesbury, which has nine potential stops along it. Those include the arena in Vankleek Hill and several street intersections in town. A stop is also being considered on Highway 34 at Pleasant Corners Road near the Champlain municipal office, and at the corner of Pattee Road and Eldemer Street before entering Hawkesbury near the Walmart and

Asselin Independent Grocer on Highway 17.

Champlain CAO will be reviewing proposed stops The list of suggested stops has been left with Chief Administrative Officer Paula Knudsen. Council will have the final decision on which stop locations are suitable in Champlain.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation provided the UCPR with a $2 million grant to develop the new transit system. It is also using $500,000 of the grant to allow Carefor, which already provides a limited local transportation service, to purchase an additional vehicle and hire another driver.

The UCPR was accepting requests for proposals for the operation of the new PR Transpo system until August 23. The next step will be to select a transit operator and determine when the new service will begin.

The Chambre de commerce et d’Industrie of Argenteuil (CCIA) announced on September 9 a new green initiative for local businesses. The initiative implements solutions for businesses to have more environmentally-friendly habits.

“All too often businesses try to switch to cleaner habits but

don’t know how and thus, do not succeed,” according to a representative from CCIA. The initiative will be supervised by an independent committee and will encourage many solutions, including hiring local employees so they can travel a shorter distance to work, resulting in fewer emissions.

Converting from fossil fuels to electricity is another solution.

Quebec’s electric-

ity rates are among the lowest in North America, so it makes sense that electricity is the best power source for businesses looking for alternatives.”

The Quebec provincial ministry of environmental protection and the fight against climate change will be enforcing the initiative and Argenteuil says, “It’s a way to encourage businesses to get involved.”

Parent of child with autism says things have improved since she pleaded for help in a letter to the editor JAMES MORGAN

In the August 21 edition of The Review, we published a letter to the editor from an unnamed single mother who was having considerable difficulties accessing help and services to help cope with her 11-year-old son, who has autism. The mother explained that her son has tried to stab her and had exhibited other violent behaviour at home and in public.

The mother wrote that she was having difficulties receiving adequate direction on how to respond to the violent situations and how to manage them.

The situation caused the woman considerable anxiety and stress which she said led to a suicide attempt.

According to a recent conversation with the parent, conditions in her home and family have recently improved.

The son is attending a new school and his mother said the change has helped.

Valoris, the local children and youth services agency, is visiting her home weekly to ensure everything is going well.

In addition to the son having autism, the mother and her 12-year-old daughter also have Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism.

Autism Ontario Ottawa Chapter Vice President Nicole Taylor of Hawkesbury, whose son has autism, said the first step a parent dealing with a violent situation should take is to contact an agency like Valoris. However, if there is a dangerous emergency, parents should contact the police.

Taylor acknowledged that many parents are afraid to contact children’s services or police

because they are afraid of their children being taken away from them or fear they will face consequences. She explained that these situations are not treated the same as regular assault or domestic dispute situations.

Taylor said parents who are injured should seek medical attention.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa has a regional mandate to provide autism services across eastern Ontario.

“It’s worth the drive to CHEO,” was Taylor’s endorsement of the autism services provided there.

Autism Ontario’s Ottawa Chapter has a Service Navigator on its staff who assists families with children on the autism spectrum on how to obtain programs and services.

The Ottawa Chapter also has a Facebook support group that parents are welcome to join.

“There have been friendships built from that,” Taylor said.

The parent who wrote the letter to the editor said she has participated in support groups before and meets with other parents whose children have autism for coffee and to discuss hobbies like gardening and art, which she said help her deal with anxiety.

Single parents, and those with limited finances often feel isolated and under more stress.

Having reliable, caring friends is important, according to Taylor.

According to Valoris Director of Services, Pierre-Louis Lefebvre, if parents in violent situations feel there is an imminent risk to safety, they should call 9-1-1. Valoris also has a toll-free, 24-hour emergency support line, which is 1-800-675-6168.

When mistakes are made, we have to address them together

ccording to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), Canada’s Arctic is warming at three times the global rate.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will release a special climate report on September 25, explaining the effects and risks posed by climate change on our oceans and snow and ice-covered places on the planet.

The effect of rising sea levels on Inuit communities, icedependent species and people and wildlife living all along our coasts and in high mountain areas will be examined in the report, according to the WWF. The entire planet is also at risk — the poles and oceans regulate the entire Earth’s temperature.

The scientific report is expected to show how climate, people and nature are connected and will stress the importance of using nature-based solutions to help us mitigate emissions and adapt to impacts. The report will also include our options to respond.

How we respond to climate change -- a crisis of humanity’s own doing -- will be a reflection of our understanding of the seriousness of the issue. What is our attitude? What perspective do we have? From where are we obtaining information? Who and which sources do we trust?

This past week, pictures of Justin Trudeau in blackface and brownface emerged, bringing Canadians’ attention to racism and discrimination. What is our attitude to people whose skin is a different colour from our own? What do we know about those who practice religions with which we may be unfamiliar?

Climate change will affect how we survive on this planet but so, too, will our ability to live together peacefully and cooperatively on this planet.

We cannot undo a past of hatred and racial annihilation. But one would hope that we can become smarter and look through misinformation to make independent, compassionate choices.

Parents and teachers used to be the predominant sources of information for young people but we all know that has changed.

Young people turn to the online world and to each other for information. What has also changed is the increased support system to eliminate bullying in schools.

But if we have not experienced or seen the effects of bullying, or discrimination, or racism first-hand, we may not fully get it.

Read more and try to understand how easily people can be convinced that people of another race or religion are bad.

As we consider what our relationship is to the planet and nature, we also need to reflect on our relationship with each other.

Are we kind only to those who are like us? Do we distrust before we think about trusting? Do we fear before we know anything at all?

As the election campaign heats up, let us each take a moment to ask candidates what they stand for. Are they following a party’s position without undertaking their own due consideration of the issues? Are they prepared to act on the issues that matter the most?

Mistakes have been made. By all of us. We are in this humanity thing together.

So now, let’s do better, together.

Our veterans of the Second World War and the Korean War have both fought hard and made tremendous sacrifices, and they have both won the greatest level of respect and thanks we can give them. The Government of France is awarding their highest medal to all living Canadian veterans who directly helped to liberate their country between June 6 and August 30, 1944.

The Republic of Korea is presenting its Ambas-

sador for Peace Medal to all Canadian Veterans who participated in the Korean War and its peace keeping operations between 1950 and 1955. Living veterans or the families of veterans who have passed away may be eligible to receive this special medal from Korea.

RATE OF SELF-INJURY

The region’s population has a higher rate of individuals who harm themselves intentionally than the rest of Ontario. This can be seen in the number of individuals per 100,000 population who were admitted to hospital Emergency Departments due to intentional self-harm. While 155 individuals were admitted in Ontario, 206 individuals were admitted in Eastern Ontario in 2017.

Women are particularly at risk for selfinjury in Eastern Ontario, where 316 individ-

uals per 100,000 population were admitted to Emergency Departments for self-harm in 2017, compared to 205 in Ontario.

ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO USE

The report also revealed that the EOHU’s catchment area has higher rates of heavy drinkers and tobacco users than the rest of Ontario.

While 44% of the population aged 19 and older self-reported exceeding the number of drinks set out in the low-risk alcohol drinking guidelines in Ontario, the number goes up to 48% in Eastern Ontario.

The case is much the same when it comes to tobacco use. While just under 12% of the population aged 12 and over reported being a current smoker in Ontario, that number rises to over 16% in Eastern Ontario.

For positive mental health determinants, such as self-rated mental health, life satisfaction and social well-being, Eastern Ontario residents rated themselves about the same as residents across Ontario. In Ontario, 71.1% (70.8 for EOHU) of the population aged 12 and over reported perceiving their own mental health status as being excellent or very good.

In Ontario, 92.6 per cent (91.2%) of residents aged 12 and over reported being very satisfied or very satisfied with their life in general. When it comes to social well-being, 70.9 per cent of Ontarians (71.6% EOHU) reported their sense of belonging to their local community described as being very strong or somewhat strong.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) has released a snapshot of the state of mental health in Eastern Ontario.

The snapshot aims to identify a baseline for future mental health promotion and surveillance efforts by the EOHU and local community partners. The report is based on the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Positive Mental Health Surveillance Framework, which provides a structure to measure mental health using 25 different indicators.

“Mental health is a priority for our region.

This report represents a call to action for all of our community partners to continue working together on mental health promotion,” states Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health.

“Multiple committees and agencies will benefit from this data as we work together with our population to increase protective factors for positive mental health.” He adds that the EOHU is working with community partners to launch a life promotion and mental health awareness campaign over the next few months, with the aim of promoting resiliency and mental wellbeing.

In the report, the EOHU’s catchment area scored about the same as the rest of Ontario in most indicators such as life satisfaction and social well-being, however there are a few notable exceptions compared to the province overall:

Lemieux: Trust in government and cost of living are main campaign issues

Francis Drouin wants another four years in the House of Commons. The Liberal candidate for Glengarry-Prescott and Russell was first elected in 2015 as a local example of the nation-wide trend which led to the Liberals forming the government with Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.

The Liberals are trying to emphasize what they see as the positive things they have done for Canada in the past four years.

“It’s always been about the middle class,” according to Drouin.

He referred to the child benefit program, the increase in the Guaranteed Income Supplement for senior citizens living alone, and measures to address climate change.

The Liberals have introduced a carbon tax in provinces that did not already have a carbon pricing program in place, including Ontario. Drouin said that the Conservatives, which plan to eliminate the carbon tax if they win the October 21 election, have forgotten to mention that there is a tax credit for Cana-

dians to receive a rebate with an average of $337 per year from the carbon tax they pay.

He also highlighted the middle-class income tax cut the Liberals made which reduced income taxes by 1.5 per cent for people earning more than $45,000 per year, and that the child benefit is now tax free.

Housing, seniors issues, and improvements to rural internet and mobile phone service are other focus issues for Drouin. He referred to an announcement made in July that provides $71 million for internet and mobile coverage across Eastern Ontario. Drouin said he’s personally tired of having his mobile phone calls suddenly dropped due to poor coverage.

Drouin said some voters have asked him about the SNC Lavalin scandal. Former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould resigned in objection to alleged interference by the Prime Minister’s Office in the prosecution of Montreal-based engineering firm SNC Lavalin for its ties to the former Gaddafi dictatorship in Libya.

Pierre Lemieux wants to represent Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in the House of Commons again. The Conservative candidate was the riding’s Member of Parliament (MP) from 2006 to 2015 during the government of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“I’ve been campaigning for a long time,” said Lemieux, who has been seen at events throughout the riding and has made statements on federal matters to the press for several months. He spent the first two days of the official election campaign going door-todoor in Hawkesbury. In 2017, he ran for the Conservative leadership, placing sixth out of 14 candidates before being eliminated on the eighth of 13 ballots that ultimately led to Andrew Scheer’s win.

Fire service changes should improve response in three Argenteuil municipalities

“Whatever they buy is costing more, and will be increasing,” explained Lemieux.

The carbon tax rate is scheduled to increase gradually. Lemieux said that will affect people on fixed incomes, and the cost of electricity, heating, and food due to higher transportation and refrigeration costs.

He said that rural residents cannot access public transit as easily as urban Canadians when it comes to choosing more environmentally-friendly transportation options.

Fuel for farm use is exempt from the carbon tax, but Lemieux said natural gas for heating and crop drying are not, which will lead to higher operating costs for agriculture.

The Conservatives plan to abolish the carbon tax if they win the October 21 election.

“They have also lost confidence in Justin Trudeau,” said Lemieux, who referred specifically to the SNC Lavalin scandal.

“It’s very much an issue,” was Lemieux’s answer when asked if the voters he meets are concerned about the scandal.

A new coordination protocol is being implemented for fire department response in Brownsburg-Chatham, Lachute, and Saint-Andréd’Argenteuil.

The new protocol means that fire departments from one municipality will respond to calls in a neighbouring municipality wherever it is closer and faster for it to respond to.

On September 17, the three municipalities announced that new agreements have been signed that are designed to optimize firefighter response times and allow cost-sharing related to firefighter salaries and minimum costs incurred when the fire department in one municipality responds to a call in another municipality.

The new protocols result from objectives set in a revised coverage scheme resulting from a study into local fire services that has taken place during the past year.

Under the new agreements, residents of Saint-André-d’Argenteuil in the area north of Coteau-des-Hêtres, and Brownsburg-Chatham residents in Saint-Philippe East, the Route du Nord sector (Highway 327), including chemin Sinclair and Lac Carillon, will now be served by the fire station that can respond most quickly.

The new protocols will be used for all calls in the areas affected. Residents must still dial 911 when needing fire department assistance and nothing has changed at that level. The call centre will transfer calls to the fire department concerned under the protocol.

“The implementation of these protocols is the result of constant efforts between BrownsburgChatham, Lachute and Saint-André-d’Argenteuil to improve the security of our citizens,” said Lachute Mayor Carl Péloquin.

“We face different challenges and I am confident that this collaboration will enable us to maintain an optimal coverage level,” said SaintAndré-d’Argenteuil Marc-Olivier Labelle.

Work on Highway 50 Quebec 511 announced that road construction will take place starting at exit 260 off Highway 50 from September 23 to October 31.

The west roadway will be closed at all times. All the west roadway drivers will be redirected towards the east roadway -- towards the on and off ramps at kilometer 260. Speed limits are 70 kilometers per hour for the westbound direction and 40 kilometers per hour for the eastbound direction.

Meet Odin and Valdez ODIN - MALE - HUSKY X, 3 MONTHS OLD - DOB JUNE 27: Although he has had a really rough start in life, Odin has made some good friends along the way.

The people who had him and his littermates went on a website to ask for help as they couldn’t afford treatment for his eye which was popping out and causing him agony. A Good Samaritan saw it and took him to the vet and then brought him to Animatch. We have had the offending eye removed but there is an ulcer in his other eye and it is felt that he has limited vision in it. That’s it for the bad news. All this does nothing to keep Odin from being a rough-and-tumble, ready-for-action puppy. He smells his food and hears your voice and the world is good. Life would be more interesting with scented toys and balls that jingle. Odin would also benefit from living with a sighted dog. Other than that, he needs what every puppy needs: patience, love and commitment. If that sounds like you, fill out the form and ask for Odin.

Tagwi students tour local farms JAMES MORGAN

GLENGARRY – Learning on the land is what a group of students from Tagwi Secondary School in Avonmore recently spent a day doing.

Agriculture and foods students visited five different farms and businesses in North Glengarry and East Hawkesbury that show how agriculture is being practised and used in the region.

The stops on the tour included Dalagra Farms on the Laggan-Glenelg Road which grows hops, the all-organic Kirkview Farms nearby

at Kirkhill, Starhill Farms in East Hawkesbury where the dairy herd is milked and fed robotically, Stonehouse Vineyard on Lochiel Road which is adapted for cold climates, and the Quirky Carrot Café in Alexandria where local produce is integrated into the menu.

At Kirkview Farms, Mike MacGillivray explained the regenerative, all organic processes he uses to raise livestock and grow crops, which reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions.

“People are starting to want to know how animals are raised,” he told the students, while they amus-

edly watched Maggie, a 500-pound expectant sow walk across the field.

“The idea is to work with animals and understand them,” said MacGillivray.

Teacher Craig Stevenson said the tour was meant to open students’ minds about the value of different methods of agriculture and to show there are viable market opportunities in different areas of the industry.

MacGillivray said it was the first school tour that has visited his farm.

“It’s great to show them there are alternatives in agriculture,” he said.

Students toured Kirkview Farms as one of five locations visited during a recent field trip.

“It’s about helping people, it’s the essence of why I do this,” he said.

The 15 per cent tax credit for public transit users, which the Liberal government cancelled, would be restored by the Conservatives. Lemieux said the Liberals have raised taxes for 80 per cent of Canadians.

The Conservative party has recently promised to lower the tax rate for people earning under $47,630 from 15 per cent to 13.75 per cent. The party estimates that would save the average family $850 per year.

Lemieux said that in addition to the carbon tax, higher payroll taxes for the Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance under the Liberals have made it more difficult for agricultural businesses to hire additional workers.

“Farmers are frustrated with the Liberals,” he said.

Construction begins for new $2.2-million paramedic station RUSSELL – The Township of Russell kicked off the construction of a new paramedic services building with a ground-breaking ceremony late Friday morning.

The ceremony marks the start of a $2.2-million dollar project for a new 7,000-square-foot building at 371 New York Central Avenue. The new building’s design includes four vehicle bays.

As part of the township’s Strategic Plan to build new infrastructure, this new station will help accommodate the building needs for both the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) and the Township of Russell. The new station will assist the UCPR Paramedic Services to grow its fleet and modernize infrastructure to respond to what has become a six per cent annual increase in calls and demand for services.

The township will be entering into a 20-year lease agreement with the UCPR for the new building. The UCPR Paramedic Services is expected to begin its occupancy at the new station in the spring of next year.

Bourgon Construction Ltd will undertake the construction of the new station. Colliers Project Leaders, which is also leading the building design, will supervise the project.

The Township of Russell and the UCPR say they are looking forward to seeing the completion of the new paramedic services building in the coming months.

Fake jewellery scam The Ontario Provincial Police are warning people that fraudsters have been attempting to sell fake jewellery at gas stations in exchange for gas money.

Phys Ed 101 start-up set for October 9 VANKLEEK HILL – Last year, the notfor-profit Vankleek Hill Sports Club introduced a new program called Phys Ed 101 which allowed young athletes to try a number of popular sports over the course of the school year. The Vankleek Hill Sports Club will once again be offering the program for students in Grades 3 to 6. The focus will continue to be on Long Term Player Development (LTPD) models which have become the standard across the country. LTPD stresses appropriate-sized playing surfaces, small groups, greater practice-to-game ratios and grouping players with similar skill sets.

The fall semester will begin on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

at Pleasant Corners Public School. It will run for 10 consecutive weeks. Registering in advance is highly recommended as there is limited space available. The focus will be on basketball and broomball for this semester.

The winter semester will begin on January 8, 2020 and will also run for 10 consecutive weeks. Gymnastics and volleyball will be the focus during the winter semester.

Play badminton in Vankleek Hill VANKLEEK HILL – Adults and students play badminton at Vankleek Hill Collegiate The Eastern Ontario Cobras Major Atom AA team was crowned Belleville Bulls AA Preseason Tilt Institute a few times per week.

Adults play every Monday and Wedneschampion on Sunday, September 22, 2019 after a perfect 5-0 weekend. The Cobras defeated the Seaway Valley Rapids 6-3 in the championship final. It was a complete team effort with excel- day from 7 to 9 p.m. Students play Wedneslent puck movement and heads-up play for the Cobras who showed no fatigue and put forward days from 6 to 8 p.m. Fees are $15 for September to December and $15 from January their strongest performance of the weekend in the final. to June.

A Power of Attorney is a legal document. It gives one person, or more than one person, the authority to manage your money and property for you.

You’re not required to make a Power of Attorney. However, it’s a good idea to have a Power of Attorney in case you become unable to manage your own finances. You may also want to have a Power of Attorney if you just want some help managing your finances.

The person you name is usually called an “attorney.” That person does not need to be a lawyer.

If you want your attorney to be able to give gifts, such as money, on your behalf (including to the attorney), this should be clearly set out in the Power of Attorney document.

Consider the pros and cons of naming more than one person as attorney. Disputes between attorneys could cause problems in the management of your finances.

Think about naming a trusted professional as your decision-maker if your finances are complicated or if you’re not sure if your friends or family can manage them. Keep in mind there may be fees.

Make sure you list any restrictions in your power of attorney document if there is anything you don’t want your attorney to be able to do.

Check with your financial institution to learn about its rules for dealing with attorneys.

Continue to review your account statements as long as you’re able to do so. Take action if the transactions done by your attorney aren’t what you wanted.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is working closely with its 16 partner municipalities to deliver environmental services that protect people and property from natural hazards, support sustainable development, and protect and enhance the local environment. With support from the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG), 542 native trees and shrubs will be planted alongside county roadways this month throughout parts of North Dundas, North Stormont and South Glengarry.

“There are many benefits to having trees along roadsides” explained Cheyene Brunet, SNC Forestry Technician. “They absorb and filter roadside runoff, serve as natural windbreaks, provide habitat and food for wildlife, and reduce noise pollution,” she added.

SNC delivers this program on behalf of the SDG Counties and is responsible for ordering stock, planting, maintenance, refilling and monitoring these sites until they can grow on their own. New sites are selected by SNC and county staff each year.

The addition of this year’s 5 sites will bring the total to 32 roadside tree planting projects across SDG since the collaboration began in 2010.

“Programs such as these contribute to enhancing public spaces and local forest cover, while leaving a natural legacy for future generations” said Brunet. SNC also works with local landowners by offering a variety of tree order subsidies for planting in idle land, farm fields and along watercourses. Over-the-counter coniferous and deciduous tree sales are also available for smaller orders and are accepted yearround.

In total, SNC has planted over 3.2 million trees across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario since 1990.

“This year alone we’ve planted over 140,000 trees through our forestry programs, municipal and community partnerships, tree giveaways and planting events,” said Brunet. “Our sights are already set on enhancing the local landscape throughout the 2020 planting season.”

Don’t make me laugh. I might not stop.

By Louise Sproule louise@thereview.ca I used to listen carefully when grown-ups were talking to each other. I couldn’t always understand what made them laugh.

But my best observation-time happened when we watched television as a family. I would listen carefully as stand-up comedians would do their thing and watch my parents faces closely.

The changes of expression -- the lightness and lift that crossed their faces as they laughed fascinated me. I laughed with them, thinking that eventually, I would figure it out. I so wanted to understand this thing called humour.

I was reminded about humour again this weekend at Oktoberfest, when everyone seemed to be in a light mood. There was laughter and a lot of funny stories being told or at least, it looked that way to me. And Edward Zucca, aka Eddy Earwigg, returned to town to be emcee for many of the competitions. He is one of those people who makes me laugh. All the time. I think he should write comedy. That’s how funny he is.

My cousin was there and well: we just look at each other and laugh. It’s always been that way.

He is funny, too, but we can just make eye contact and that’s it.

We laugh.

I have learned how important it is to know when to laugh; laughing at the wrong moment might make someone your enemy for life.

I often have the overwhelming urge to laugh at inappropriate times. In church. During exams. Watching everyone hold onto their dignity and their cats in the vet’s waiting room.

When people lie down on beds

in furniture stores and close their eyes. Do people try out coffins that way, too?

When people spill things, it makes me laugh. When they spill something a second time, that makes me laugh.

When I see someone happily driving down the road with a purse on the front grill of their car, that makes me laugh.

The best (or worst) part is: I am not alone.

Our entire family laughed when my uncle slipped on the end of the dock and flipped himself into the lake one time.

When my aunt went home for a sweater and was walking back to the beach party and turned right too soon and landed in a ditch, where she had to claw her way out in the dark (no one heard her calling for help because the beach party was loud and happening just a few feet away from that roadside ditch), we all laughed. I must say here, we are not mean people. I blame my aunt for how she looked (covered with mud) and for how she told the story. She was laughing, too.

In fact, I blame them all for my wanton sense of humour.

For it is my family who taught me what was funny in the first place.

Given the news and talk of racism, discrimination and attitudes in light of the Justin Trudeau story this past week, it seemed like a time to reflect on who and what influences our attitudes and how we think, how we treat others and yes -- even what makes us laugh.

There is certainly no shortage of influencers -- but in the end, we choose what we think.

An avid writer, reader, and creative thinker, she jumped into motherhood the same way she’s taken most big leaps in life; just slightly underprepared, cautiously optimistic, and with a firm belief in trying things that scare you. She writes a bi-weekly column in The Review about her experiences of motherhood.

Jacquie won Columnist of the Year for 2018 in the Ontario Community Newspaper Competition Better Newspaper Awards; the awards gala took place earlier this year. She and her family recently moved back to Whitby, Ontario, but she will continue to write for us!

Did you know that some parents don’t “believe in” using the word no? I haven’t read much past the headline to know exactly why using the word no with your children is a bad thing, but I’ve seen it mentioned often enough to know there’s definitely a movement of parents following this philosophy. I am not one of them. I say no. I say no too often, probably.

I certainly didn’t set out to be a “no” parent. I didn’t set out to be the mom at the park, loudly directing her child from one side of the playground to the other, “No, Olimpia, wait for Mommy. No, Olimpia, Nooooo.”

If I had only one 18-month-old, I might be able to walk close by her all the time, and not direct her from a distance. I might find it funny when my one 18-month-old took the vinyl collection off the shelf and dumped the records

Marius Bauer awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers

The township of North Glengarry awarded resident and employee, Marius Bauer with the "Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers'' on September 18 during its committee of the whole meeting. This ceremony took place on behalf of the Governor General of Canada.

Since emigrating to Canada in 2007, Marius Bauer has been active in giving back to the community through his volunteer work at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 423 in Alexandria; and with the Air Cadet League of Canada. He is also the treasurer for Alexandria 200 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Glengarry Inter-Agency Group (GIAG).

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is a Canadian decoration awarded by the Governor General to honour volunteers who have made a significant and continual contribution to their community.

Bauer was presented with his medal by North Glengarry Deputy Mayor Carma Williams. “Marius is a very deserving volunteer. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to the Legion. The work he has done, and continues to dedicate himself to, has been of great benefit to the entire community as a whole,” said Deputy Mayor Williams.

I’d be chill as my one 18-monthold perched precariously at the top of the stairs, sliding one little set of toes over the edge, testing the distance to the next step down, because I’d be hovering nearby, ready to catch her when she falls.

Alas, I have two little 18-month-olds, each more intent on disaster than the other. I have two kids who want to eat rocks, bugs, and the little berries they pop off of the bush in the backyard. And so I say no.

But recently, it all came crashing down. Dottie likes to steal her sister’s cup of milk, the moment she puts it down. This usually earns a lighthearted, “No Dottie, that’s Oli’s,” and she reacts by dropping it and running away in the opposite direction. But this week, when I informed her she’d need to hand over the goods, she looked right at me, scrunched up her little chubby face, hugged the milk to her chest, and said, “NO.” It was a very cute no. High pitched, a touch of emphasis on the o, and very definitive. No definitely meant no. I laughed and shouted to my husband, “Dottie just said no!!” New words are still exciting for us. But I also felt a sinking feeling. This is the beginning. She’s going to spend a lifetime telling me no.

In one sense, it’s a relief to know the kids understand language and the beginnings of communication are very satisfying after 18 months of babbling. On the same count, I am pleased she’s sensing her ability to be autonomous and make decisions, drive her own destiny, and express her preferences.

But I also know this means she’s going to be stubborn and demanding. She’s going to push back when we tell her what to do. And now, a week later, both twins say no with a shocking amount of clarity and confidence.

In another sense, I could stand to learn from them. No is what they feel, and no is what they say. I’ve never been great at that; I must have forgotten along the way. As I will undoubtedly regret teaching them the word no at certain moments, I will in the next breath hope they learn to wield it with all of its defining power as young women navigating a big world that always wants them to say yes.

Local team participated in Canada Army Run

Team Hawkesbury Animal Hospital took part in the Canada Army Run, which took place in Ottawa on September 22. The team participated in the Normandy Challenge (5km + 10Km). Optimist Club donates to HGH Foundation The Optimist Club of St-Eugène and Ste-Anne have made an additional $3,000 donation to the HGH Foundation’s Access 2018 Campaign in support of the purchase of a new CT scanner and MRI machine for the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital (HGH). This is the Club’s second donation this year, bringing the total amount donated in 2019 to $5,000!

This donation was made possible thanks to the Optimist Club’s collaboration with Delta Bingo and they have generously agreed to donate an additional $5,000 to the Access 2018 campaign over the next two years.

The cheque was presented by two members of the Optimist Club of Ste-Eugène and Ste-Anne in the attached photo. Present and included in the photo (from left to right): Pierre-Luc Byham (Executive Director, HGH Foundation), Géraldine Bélanger (President, Optimist Club) and Gilles Bélanger (Treasurer, Optimist Club). The HGH Foundation appreciates this very kind donation in support of such important diagnostic imaging equipment for the hospital.

About Access 2018 The Access 2018 campaign will help provide the HGH with two pieces of state-of-the-art equipment, a new CT scanner and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The campaign objective is 4 million dollars.

The CT scanner and MRI are used to quickly diagnose and treat health conditions such as tumors, heart problems and strokes. Currently, patients have to travel to a city hospital for MRI exams. Once operational, the machines will be used approximately 15,000 times per year.

The HGH Foundation’s mission is to raise funds in order to improve the care and services offered to the community by the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital.
