Syrian family set to arrive in Barry’s Bay on Valentines Day CHRISTINE HUDDER Managing Editor

BARRY’S BAY – After more than two long years of waiting, a Syrian family will be able to call Barry’s Bay their home.

The Madawaska Valley Friends of New Canadians (MVFONC) is sponsoring the family of five, who are currently living in a refugee camp in Jordan. They will be arriving on February 14.

The committee’s executive consists of Rev. Darlene Cunliffe, Mary-Rose Dawes, Vicki Glofcheskie and Bob Ogilvie.

The grassroots group first met in May 2016. Around 24 people took part. They were inspired by the photograph of three-yearold Alan Kurdi, whose body washed up on the shores of the Mediterranean in September 2015.

“That sort of galvanized the west about the Syrian refugee crisis,” MVFONC spokesperson Bob Ogilvie said.

By May 2016, when the group had its first meeting, it was estimated that there were already 400,000 people killed in the Syrian civil war.

The group acted quickly, partnering with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, which became the sponsorship agreement holder. There were a few reasons why this was important; the Anglican Diocese had experience with sponsoring refugee families, and the group would be able to offer tax receipts to donors.

The two organizations rushed to meet the new Trudeau Government’s sponsorship requirements.

“The Federal government suggested that any group who wanted to sponsor a refugee family had to come up with at least $27,000.

That was how much the government figured it would take to support a refugee family for one year,” Ogilvie said.

What came next was a flurry of fundraising, collecting of furniture and clothing, and locating people with expertise in teaching English as a second language. They had a start; Ogilvie’s wife, Margaret, was a teacher and a psychologist who worked with young children. Members from the group who had various skills also stepped up to the challenge.

“There was a huge amount of enthusiasm,” Ogilvie said. “It was all word of mouth. A few people phoned one another. It was grassroots movement to come up with the group, and then we fundraised the same way.”

MVFONC quickly surpassed its goal of raising $27,000 and was able to raise $36,361. Donors gave what they could – everything from a couple of dollars to thousands of dollars.

“We obviously overshot,” he laughed.

By February 2016, MVFONC was ready to welcome a Syrian family. In 2017, they had selected a young family of four (which

Love gets standing ovation from county A voice for rural Ontario

MARK JONES Staff Reporter PEMBROKE - While the Warden of the County of Renfrew, Jennifer Murphy, was congratulating Mayor of the Township of Madawaska Valley, Kim Love, on being elected board member for the Rural Ontario Municipal Association Zone 6, members of county council were standing and clapping.

“The ROMA board of directors brings together the municipal leaders from all over Ontario to advance the priorities of our rural communities in an ever changing world,” Murphy said.

“It’s a very big deal.”

The January 30 meeting of the County of Renfrew was a day after the ROMA conference ended in Toronto, and the first chance for members to congratulate Love.

Under New Business, Love addressed the issue.

“I want to thank county council for the amazing campaign and moral support I have received at the ROMA conference,” she said. “Our members attending ROMA worked steadily as a team, handing out campaign material, endorsing me in their conversations and introducing me to delegates from other parts of Zone 6. Most important, the Renfrew County team got the vote out.”

ROMA Zone 6 is one of nine in the province. It includes the counties of Renfrew, Hastings, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington. It includes 50 townships.

Love is willing to put in the work of being a board member in addition to her other obligations, in order to give voice to rural concerns, she told The Valley Gazette after the meeting.

“It is so important to be in on the ground where policy is being formulated, make sure that it gets formed in a way that reflects your concerns and your needs,” she said. “Otherwise, if a policy comes out from the provincial government and now, after the fact, you are trying to get it changed, it is so much harder.”

It was four years ago, Love recognized the importance of being a part of ROMA. She was at a side meeting convened by smaller municipalities at a combined ROMA and Ontario Good Roads Association conference. It was established that few members in that side meeting knew who their ROMA board member was.

“That was a seminal moment for ROMA, for smaller communities. We realized we were not using ROMA zone reps the way we should be, we were not communicating,” Love said. “ROMA had to take a step back as well.”

The two conferences were separated and ROMA began to focus their conferences on more rural issues.

ROMA advocates for rural municipalities within the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), of which it is part.

Love said the role of ROMA is to ensure the concerns of rural communities are understood, as is the effect of legislation on rural residents.

She gives the example of the firefighter certification introduced by the previous provincial government. AMO was concerned with the double hatter issue, where full-time urban firefighters were volunteering in small townships. ROMA was concerned with the additional training required of volunteer rural firefighters which would have necessitated time away from work and home in order to complete the newly required certification.

For Love, this example illustrates the slightly different focus of ROMA compared to the larger municipalities.

Love’s first task is to ensure the 50 members in Zone 6 know that she is their representative.

“I am going to be using every creative way I possibly can to make those connections to make sure they know who I am.”

The ROMA board meets eight times a year, often combined with conferences.

“Making yourself accessible to them so that we can have these conversations. You cannot represent someone if you don’t understand their concerns.”

Love said that she wanted to run for a position on the ROMA board two years ago when her predecessor withdrew part way through the four year term, which coincides with municipal elections.

That was when the Township of Madawaska Valley CAO Craig Kelley resigned.

“That was the end of that because you really do have to have your own municipality in a good position to do this.”

Killaloe welcoming Mill Street Dental Familiar face, new location

CHRISTINE HUDDER Managing Editor KILLALOE – A familiar face will be returning to her roots in Killaloe.

Mandy Kutchcoskie from Barry’s Bay has worked as a dental hygienist for nine years. After the clinic closed briefly after Dr. Zochodne’s passing, Kutchkoskie decided not to return when the company was sold.

“I have many people asking me where I am now,” she said.

Kutchcoskie will soon be opening Mill Street Dental Hygiene in Killaloe, a community where she had her first dental job.

“I’m sure many people have forgotten there was ever a dental clinic there at one time,” she said.

Kutchkoskie’s dental hygiene clinic will be located in the Rainbow Valley Health Centre in Killaloe, where she had her start as a dental assistant assisting Dr. Kenny from 2003 to 2005. When she left for maternity leave, Dr. Kenny retired and the clinic closed in the summer of 2005.

From 2007 to 2009, Kutchkoskie returned to Algonquin College in Ottawa to study dental hygiene. She then worked with Dr. Donovan in July 2009 up until Dr. Donovan’s retirement in 2016. She continued there when Dr. Zochodne purchased the business, until his passing in the summer of 2018.

“The space at the medical center became available this year, so I took the opportunity for a new adventure,” she said.

She also thanked the elected members of the Township of Madawaska Valley. “[Councillors] Dave [Shulist], Mark [Willmer] and Ernie [Peplinski] were out there campaigning for me. They had my promotional materials, giving out badges. They were fantastic.

I really appreciated that support. It was nice to see. They were really part of this.”

As well as County of Renfrew members, Love was aided by her work with the Rural Mayors Forum, of which she has been a part for many years.

“It gave me connections with other counties. Certain mayors who were part of that, know my work, know how dedicated I am, they were supporting me and talking to others about me.”

When asked how she will find time for the additional responsibilities, Love answered that having a solid municipal team in place will give her more time.

“I will still go to events and I will still do graduation and veterans’ dinners and things. I will still be doing those things in the community because they are part of the enjoyment of the job. I will still be doing council meetings, but we’ve got those down to two a month.”

During the county meeting, when Love was thanking councillors for support, she began to tear up.

“I’m going to cry,” she said.

Warden Murphy said, “I cried when you won. Now you’re crying.”

Explaining her tears afterward, Love said, “It was such an emotional thing. It wasn’t what I did. It was what everybody else did to help me get this and we achieved this goal.”

“Obviously we knew that every family on there needed sponsorship. So it was difficult.

But what we looked for was a young family and one that we thought for that reason, they might adapt more readily to Barry’s Bay and to Canada for that matter,” Ogilvie said. “The other factor that played a role was that the family does have family in Ottawa.”

The group chose the Alshhadat family, which consists of father Ayman, a young computer scientist from Syrian, his wife Marah, five-year-old son Imad, three-year-old daughter Sedrat and one-and-a-half year-old daughter Mays.

The family had fled Syria, then lived in a refugee camp in Lebanon and after, transferred to one in Jordan. Ogilvie said the family had been in Jordan for two years.

Ogilvie said everything was on point for the sponsorship, but things slowed down with the government’s processing of applications.

“We kept hearing every once in a while that there was paperwork to be completed by the immigration people in Ottawa,” he said.

“There was paperwork to be completed in Jordan.”

There were background checks to be done as well as health checks.

“Nobody wants to see people admitted to Canada who shouldn’t be. So those background

checks seem to take a long time,” Ogilvie explained. “There were a number of steps.

Each of which seemed to go consecutively rather than concurrently, and each of which seemed to run incredibly slowly.”

The last data entry on the Alshhadat family’s file was in May 2018. Then in the fall, MVFONC was told to prepare for the family’s arrival in early 2019.

“But we had had dates proposed in the past and not lived up to,” Ogilvie admitted. “So we kind of took that with a grain of salt. Then all of sudden - boom, things finally did come together. We are pretty excited about that.”

The family is expected to be flying out of Jordan, transferring in Toronto and arriving at the Ottawa airport on February 14, 2019.

“We have been so busy trying to get our final ducks lined up,” Ogilvie said. “The one thing that we don’t have…we actually don’t have a place for them to stay.”

MVFONC is looking to rent a threebedroom apartment or home close to Barry’s Bay for the family.

“One of the main reasons of thinking about Barry’s Bay is that we don’t expect the family will have a car, and we were sort of hoping that education and shopping will be within walking distance,” Ogilvie explained. “That’s our reason for preferring Barry’s Bay, it would be more central.”

Even if the group doesn’t find their preferred accommodation, that doesn’t mean that the family will go homeless. The group has some leads for accommodations if they can’t find a three-bedroom property.

“We are looking for the best accommodations that we can find,” Ogilvie said. “Ideally, it would be a house to rent that would be fairly close to the downtown area. Certainly an apartment would be fine as well.”

Once the family arrives, the MVFONC is hoping to act in a supportive role. The Alshhadat family will have relatives close by - Ayman’s mother lives in Ottawa along with at least one other family member.

“The family may or may not want to stay in Barry’s Bay, but the goal of our group is to simply provide a warm and supportive environment for their first year in Canada,” Ogilvie said. “Then they are expected to be on their own feet by that time.”

MVFONC has been in contact with Ayman Alshhadat via email.

“The email seemed to be written quite well.

He is a computer specialist. We are hopeful that that will mean that he will have less trouble than some in getting up to speed and finding work,” Ogilvie commented. “We don’t know how good the family’s English is at this point.”

The group will continue to accept donations from the community, especially winter clothing, a double bed and any furniture that can help furnish an apartment or home.

During the year, the group will provide the basic necessities to the family – rent, clothing,

money for food, etc. The children will go to school and learn English. Other support systems will be offered as well.

“We don’t have much information on them at the moment, so we are awaiting instruction from them too,” Ogilvie said. “We are hoping that the family will receive a warm welcome and lots of support when they come to Barry’s Bay.”

The Alshhadat family consists of dad Ayman, mom Marah, one-and-a-half yearold Mays, five-year-old Emad and threeyear-old Sedrat.

Calvin Hudder was born and raised in Combermere, to parents Calvin Sr. and Shirley-Ann. He’s the father of two children, and is married to Katlyn Hudder who works

at Greg Kelly Insurance in Barry’s Bay. Calvin began his journey into mechanics with Combermere Service Centre at the age of 15.

“I have always liked cars,” he said.

Over the years, he took his mechanic’s apprenticeship through the service centre, where he has remained for 15 years.

Ralph Parisien purchased the Combermere Service Centre 21 years ago, and continued operating the business until recently. While he still owns the business, Hudder will manage all aspects of the Combermere Service Centre.

“It’s a management takeover,” Calvin confirmed.

The business will run as per usual, providing 24-hour automotive towing service and roadside assistance. The full service garage will continue offering auto repair and service.

Calvin doesn’t anticipate any changes to the service centre in the future, but is open to new possibilities.

“We will see how it goes,” he said.

Three other employees will continue to help keep the business running smoothly. They include Ryan McMillan, who runs the towing department of the garage, Mechanic Eric Blank (who also started on as an apprentice with the business) and Office Manager Rick Martin.

All off the employees at the garage are local – Rick Martin is from Palmer Rapids, Ryan McMillan is from Barry’s Bay and Eric Blank is from Wilno.

Calvin said he is excited to be the new manager, and will continue helping the community any way he can through co-op placements with the Madawaska Valley District High School and through donations to community events.

Tears of celebration flow as pastor and family move on Seeking new leadership at Family Life Christian Centre

MARK JONES Staff Reporter BARRY’S BAY - It was a church service full of tears on Sunday, at Madawaska Valley District High School.

It was the last service of Lead Pastor Richard and Tracy Lorenzin before they move on to a new church in Bowmanville.

Richard was 22 when he first came to Family Life Christian Centre 14 years ago.

The service gathered in the cafeteria at the school, began with 20 minutes of non-stop joyous singing led by Tracy Lorenzin, with her father, Brett Dalgleish on keyboard, Terry Mask on drums and Jason Malinowski on guitar.

When Richard stood before the congregation to speak, he said, clearly affected by the situation, “This is larger than me.”

He took for his text, Psalm 100: Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Richard asked to share a story from his own life.

When he was six years old, he was with his mother who was shopping for clothes. He thought he would play a trick on her. He hid in a circular clothes rack.

“I thought she would come and find me,” he told the congregation.

She did not.

When he emerged from the clothes rack, he could not see her. She was gone.

“I was consumed with panic, what if I never saw my mother again?” Richard asked.

He went on to say that many of us feel disoriented, and do not know how we will be found.

His mother was not lost; she was on the other side of the clothes rack.

How comforting it is to know we belong to God, we are his people, Pastor Richard said.

It is a struggle to know where we belong, to have feelings of acceptance and closeness to others, to have a place.

The pastor explained that the worst thing about weddings is at the point in the reception when you have to look for your name on the seating plan. Where is my place? Where can I belong?

Pastor Richard said it was amazing the places where one could belong, the most unexpected places. He did not expect to find such a place when he first came to Barry’s Bay. He came from bigger towns, where there are Walmarts, he joked, and his high school had a larger population than Barry’s Bay. We are His sheep, where he leads, we will go.

He thanked the congregation for all the things they have done for him and his family.

In the 14 years and four months that Pastor Richard has been in Barry’s Bay, the table has been prepared, there is a place. People will come and ask, where is my name? Is this a place where I can belong?

There are others who need to know God is calling them, they need a place to belong.

“We are the sheep in God’s pasture,” he said.

next generation the greatness of God. Talking about the success of the church in Barry’s Bay, Pastor Richard said, it’s not our music, or good people, it is God’s kingdom. Knowing you are his and he loves you and he has a place for you.

Several current and former members of the congregation were then given the opportunity to speak.

John, one of the first members of the church said that the congregation of the Family Life Christian Centre should feel excited that you are moving forward in God’s plan.

It is a painful, tearful process, because it has been successful.

John sent prayers of love to the pastor and his young family.

Jackie, whose family has grown up in the church, said when she first heard Richard preach, it was as though he understood her challenges and showed her the path of the Lord.

Jackie said that Richard and Tracy are amazing examples of people changing people’s lives.

“We have all grown and become better people,” Jackie said.

A former parishioner told the congregation that he will miss Richard’s voice. He asked the congregation, “Why shouldn’t others be blessed to hear that voice in other

Debbie said that transitions are challenging, but God will walk us through this transition.

It was then that Tracy spoke. She said that she never wanted to leave home in Barry’s Bay, her family and friends.

She said her reluctance to move was not just about her love of this place, it was partly based on the fear of change.

Now, she says that she is ready, God is steadfast in his leading.

She also thanked the congregation for welcoming and accepting her family.

“We’ve loved it here, because you are lovely...We are thankful for the love and care you have shown our children.”

Pastor Richard then talked about how amazing worms are, when the tail is cut off, it can grow back again, sometimes stronger than the original.

He told the congregation, “You are good people, not perfect people.” We have built a good church here, not a perfect one. We are in God’s hands.

Erin Mask said there will a service at the school next Sunday at 10:15 a.m. and that procedures to replace the pastor and music will be outlined.

The Public Liaison Committee (PLC) is a group of community residents interested in how Waste Management Services in Madawaska Valley will impact the Bark Lake Landfill. The PLC operates at arms length from Council, as a subcommittee of the Operations Committee.

The PLC is volunteer members working with the Operations Manager to find ways to improve waste services.

They can help take waste management concerns to Council.

PLC recommendations serve as advice for Council’s consideration.

Editorial: A warm Valley welcome Letter to the editor: World Cancer Day 2019 Marah was even pregnant and gave birth in a refugee camp.

No matter your politics on this subject, it’s important to recognize these people as human beings who have endured things that most people will never have to in their lifetime. It’s human instinct to search out a better life for one’s family.

After all, many of our ancestors, mine included, left life overseas to make a better one for themselves here in Canada.

This Syrian family from so far away, with a completely different background, will soon be living with us in this beautiful community.

The MVFONC hopes that a landlord with a three-bedroom apartment or home near Barry’s Bay will step forward. The group will be footing the rent for the year.

So if you know someone that has the right accommodation, get in touch with the MVFONC; the contact information is in the story.

The Alshhadat family is lucky to be arriving in such a welcoming community.

It’s also fitting that they are arriving on Valentine’s Day. I am sure this young family will receive a hearty welcome from the lovely people that call Barry’s Bay their home.

And thank you to the volunteer group, MVFONC, who have tirelessly filled out paperwork and fundraised over these past several years to give this young family a second chance at life.

The Valley Gazette has just received word that a Syrian family is set to arrive in Barry’s Bay on February 14.

Yes, Valentine’s Day - the day dedicated to spreading the love.

The news was made by the Madawaska Valley Friends of New Canadians (MVFONC), a group of local citizens who were concerned about the situation overseas.

A photo from 2015 of a three-year-old boy’s body on a Mediterranean beach spurred them to action.

I will never forget that haunting photo of Alan Kurdi’s lifeless body. His family was fleeing to Europe, but sadly, Kurdi never made it. He drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. This innocent child was the same age as my son at the time, so it really hit home.

I couldn’t imagine having to flee everything that I have ever known, only to have my own child die. It should have never have happened.

The Alshhadat family consists of father Ayman, a young computer scientist from Syria, his wife Marah, five-year-old son Imad, three-year-old daughter Sedrat and one-and-a-half year-old daughter Mays.

They were handpicked by the MVFONC group for sponsorship. They will soon be traveling thousands of kilometers overseas to make Barry’s Bay their home.

Imagine what kind of struggles this family has been through, living in a refugee camp for two or more years. Imagine the horrors that this young family has seen, fleeing from Syria in search of a better life.

Letter to the editor: Saving

Wilno rink building My name is Ross Hebert I live across the street from the Wilno Rink. Having just read the news report about the Wilno Rink fire in the Gazette I am quite disappointed and surprised by the following statement from the Madawaska Valley Township Fire Chief in the report, (see quote below).

“They were met by firefighters that live in the Wilno area and these firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire which happened in the utility room.”

The above quote is completely false... In fact I am the person who extinguished the fire using the fire extinguisher which was next to the wood stove.

So that being said this is what really happened: It was around dinner time when I happened to notice very bright lights flashing inside the building from my front porch.

(The smoke alarms were equipped with lights as well as an audible alarm).

Fortunately, I had been given a key to the rink since I have been volunteering to help clear the rink of snow with my Kubota tractor. I rushed over to the rink and unlocked the door. The main area was filling with smoke however I could not see anything burning. I initially suspected the wood stove backing up however the smoke

had the distinct smell of burning plastic. That is when I decided to check the utility room which houses two propane fired hot water tanks. The utility room was filled with dense acrid smoke and one of the hot water tank gas valves was engulfed in flames.

I immediately went to get the fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire, then I closed all the propane gas valves and turned off the main power breaker (see the attached picture I took once I had cleared the building of smoke).

While all of this was going on a neighbor had called the fire department. Those two fire fighters who live nearby mentioned in the above quote arrived on the scene after the fire had been extinguished and the building cleared of smoke. A short time after that only one fire truck and one rescue truck arrived on the scene.

In closing, I would like to emphasize that I am not looking for any kind of special recognition, I just want to set the record straight regarding what really happened that night.

Letter to the editor: Big

kudos to the Figure Skating Club We had the rewarding and very pleasant experience of being involved in a very small way, with the Figure Skating Competition at the arena this past weekend.

As we drove into the parking lot, we could not help but notice that it was overflowing with cars! And on entering the arena, we also noticed that there were masses of people both downstairs and upstairs, with figure skaters all ages and sizes. We were enthusiastically welcomed at the door by some of the volunteers who were responsible for making this all happen. Some of these volunteers go back many years.

During the course of the day, we had the

privilege of meeting with some of these volunteers, parents and skating participants, and it soon became apparent that it required many, many hours of preparation and organization to make this day the fantastic day it was. All of the people we talked to were all extremely happy that the Barry’s Bay Club hosted this competition.

This was a huge event and had a great benefit to our community…it brought so many people into the area. A very big vote of thanks goes to all these dedicated volunteers who made this all possible.

The average adult brushes their teeth for about 30 seconds. As you are denying the fact that you do the same, consider taking a timer with you into the bathroom next time you brush your teeth. An egg timer, cell phone, portable alarm clock, sports stop watch - you decide what you will time yourself with.

Even power toothbrush users who have a two minute timer often don’t brush for the full two minutes. They shut their brush off early.

Don’t Know DAVID GOULET I learned a new phrase recently that seems to sum up our modern era, “the flight from complexity”. It was coined by former journalist Alan Rusbridger and refers to our desperate need to see things as black and white. Certainly some things in life are black and white: don’t eat yellow snow, don’t drink and drive, help an elderly person cross a slippery sidewalk.

But there are many things in life where we have to accept shades of grey. The comedian and social commentator, Trevor Noah, provided a wonderful example of this when he spoke about the incident that occurred recently wherein a white teenager wearing a Make America Great Again cap was videotaped staring down a Native American elder doing a drum chant at an Indigenous Rights protest.

toothbrush off early when I am in a hurry or grabbing my manual toothbrush for a quick 30 second brush before heading out the door in the morning. We all do it now and then, but the goal should be brushing your teeth for two minutes each time twice a day.

No one pulled the two-for-two recommendation out of their hat. There is science behind these recommendations.

For an adult who has all of their teeth, or only missing a few, it takes two minutes to brush effectively. Tooth brushing is the mechanical action we use to break plaque and bacteria off of our teeth. If the bristles of your toothbrush don’t cover as much surface area of the teeth as possible, you are not brushing effectively. Leaving acidic plaque and bacteria even in just a few spots can be the start of a cavity.

For those who are missing many teeth, it often takes over a minute to brush

still. The brush should be angled into the areas where teeth were lost. This can be tricky. But these areas are now exposed, trap food, and are difficult angles to work on when you can’t see them.

The twice a day recommendation is no accident either. The average person gets enough plaque build up between eight to 10 hours that it becomes acidic. Tooth structure erodes in acid. Instead of asking you to set an alarm to brush every eight hours, making the recommendation to brush twice daily comes pretty close. If you do go over the eight hour mark a little once in a while, your saliva and toothpaste should help to remineralize the tooth and repair the microscopic damage done.

Leaving plaque on your teeth for more than eight hours on a regular basis is very damaging. The acid damage to the tooth structure may require more help to remineralize the tooth

than your normal saliva and regular toothpaste. Unfortunately, we don’t know if you are remineralizing until it is too late and we can see the damage: a cavity.

Instead of investing in an expensive microscope or having lab testing done, or just hoping for the best, brushing twice a day for two minutes each time is a great way to prevent cavities.

Carefully brushing your gum tissue during your two minute brush helps clean and stimulate the tissue to heal and prevent gingivitis and more severe gum disease too.

Most people say they don’t have time to brush two-for-two...I wonder how much time they spend on Facebook, watching Netflix, and playing video games. Taking care of our mouths can save tens of thousands of dollars over a life time. I know I can find a couple of minutes twice a day to save money on my mouth!

reaction as that he wanted to slap the smirk off the kid’s face for the display of disrespect. Most of us who saw that video felt the same. On social media, the kid got worse than a slap, he was threatened and vilified. His Catholic school was likewise the target of vitriol and the mayor of their town condemned the kid and his classmates. All the major networks also piled on, commentators expressing their outrage at the optics.

Yet, there was more to the story. As Noah observed, other videos provided more back-story. The teens were merely observing the demonstration when a radical second group called Black Hebrew Israelites started chanting vulgarities at the teens – simply because they were white, Catholic and some wore MAGA hats (now seen as offensive as a KKK hood by antiTrump haters).

After an hour of racist and homophobic abuse, the teens asked their teachers if they could sing their school spirit chants to drown out the profanities of the Black Hebrews. The teacher agreed and the students did exactly that with a lot of gusto, no doubt venting fear and anger in the process.

When the students heard a drum beat from one of the Native drummers, they joined in and chanted along to the beat.

The Native elder, Nathan Phillips, in an effort to restore the demonstration’s focus on Indigenous Rights, in turn got closer to

the students attempting to remind everyone what the whole event was supposed to be about. He undoubtedly did not appreciate the teens appropriating the Native chant, even if it was simply a youthful reflex triggered by the tense moment.

Most of the students ignored him until he got much closer and the famous kid in the original video ends up in an awkward stare down with Phillips. It was Phillip who initiated the confrontation, and it was the religious wingnuts who triggered the entire scenario to begin with.

In this context, as Noah concludes, the story is not so clear cut. As he put it, “It’s not a simple story about one person being a dick to someone; it’s a complex story about a group of people being dicks to each other….If people had waited a day before ‘dialing in’ there was a lot more to the story than they initially thought.”

Another example occurred this past week in Virginia, where the sitting governor, Ralph Northan, has faced calls to resign as a photo has surfaced from a yearbook showing him and a friend in a racist costume (one black-faced and the other in a KKK hood). The picture was taken 34 years ago. There is no questioning that the photo is offensive and it does make one question the moral fibre of the men who are in it. Is the governor of a very mixed race state, a racist? Should a public official with this kind of baggage even hold office?

Those engaged in the ‘flight from

complexity’ will look for the black and white answer (no pun intended). Yes, he must resign because clearly he is prejudiced against African Americans as the photo is evidence of. No, it was a youthful indiscretion from 34 years ago and not indicative of the man he is today. I have to confess my initial reflex is the latter. This is not a case of a sexual assault, there is no victim here except the governor’s reputation. Would you not judge the man based on his many years of public service over a single photo? I have an American friend who feels the opposite, that it doesn’t matter what year the photo occurred, that being party to it disqualifies you from public office forever in America.

Is there a grey zone here? Probably, but the only way to know is to establish the context, both of the circumstances of the picture and the governor’s present life and work. Maybe young Northam and his friend had just seen Mel Brook’s Blazing Saddles with its on the nose racial satire and thought they could pull a similar gag off – failing terribly. Maybe they were two bigoted kids who got caught in the photo and revealed their ugliness. Maybe Northam had an epiphany moment later in life and is not at all like his younger self. Maybe he is still a racist but merely hides it better.

I don’t know. We are human, and we cannot escape our complexity.

During the week of January 28 to February 3 there were 79 calls for service, including the Whitney Detachment. There were three domestic disputes, and no domestic disputes resulting in criminal code charges BREAK AND ENTER On January 29 at approximately 6:12 p.m., Killaloe OPP Constable Matthew Burton responded to a break and enter into a residence on Highway 60 in North Algona Wilberforce Township. The residence was entered and electronics were stolen. The OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) attended to assist with evidence collection. This incident remains under investigation.

COLLISION On January 31 at approximately 4:03 p.m., members of the Killaloe OPP responded to a two vehicle collision involving a minivan and a tractor trailer on Bridge Street in Bonnechere Valley Township. The 45-year-old female driver from Eganville sustained minor injuries. The minivan was towed. No charges were laid.

Highway 17 in Laurentian Hills in the area of Miller Road. The two involved drivers, who were the only occupants of the vehicles, were transported to hospital by ambulance.

Police have determined that a 24-year-old woman from Laurentian Hills was driving a blue sedan westbound on Highway 17 when she lost control and collided with a grey eastbound sedan driven by a 78-year-old man from Deep River. The female driver sustained serious injuries and the male driver sustained life-threatening injuries. OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) members assisted with the investigation. There are no grounds for charges in relation to the collision at this time.

The collision resulted in the closure of Highway 17 between Deep River and Chalk River for approximately eight hours.

DRIVERS REMINDED OF TRAFFIC LIGHT RULES The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind drivers of the rules of the road involving flashing and blank traffic lights after a number of complaints and near-collisions were recently reported.

Drivers encountering a flashing red light must come to a complete stop and proceed through the intersection only when it is safe to do so. Drivers encountering a yellow - or amber flashing light at an intersection must drive with caution when approaching and moving through the intersection.

Drivers may encounter blank traffic lights during an electrical power loss. In these situations drivers must yield the right-ofway to vehicles in the intersection and to vehicles entering the intersection from their right. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and to treat the intersection as they would an intersection with all-way stop signs.

ASSAULT INVESTIGATION LEADS TO CHARGES An assault that took place during the evening of June 9, 2018 has led to charges against four males in their twenties.

During the evening on June 9, 2018 officers of the Bancroft Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to an assault complaint that occurred on Forest View Road in the Municipality of Hastings Highlands.

Officers alongside the Bancroft Detachment Crime Unit spoke with dozens of witness’ during the investigation where a 63 year old male and a 53 year old male were assaulted during a roadside altercation. One male suffered serious injuries due to the assault.

SERIOUS COLLISION ON ROUND LAKE ROAD On July 11, 2018, at just after 6 a.m., the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a serious two vehicle collision on Round Lake Road between Borne Road and Rahns Road in Laurentian Valley Township (LVTP). The collision involved an eastbound passenger vehicle and a westbound Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) water tanker truck. The LVTP Fire Department and the Petawawa Fire Department extricated both drivers who were taken to hospital by paramedics with serious injuries. There were no passengers in the involved vehicles. OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) members assisted with the investigation.

As a result of the investigation the driver of the passenger vehicle, 37-year-old Daniel Edward Wice of Pembroke, was arrested in early January 2019 and charged with the following Criminal Code offences: - Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm - Impaired driving causing bodily harm - Driving with more than 80mgs of alcohol in his blood He was released on a promise to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on February 5, 2019.

Greg Kelley Insurance expands to Eganville Submitted by Greg Kelley Insurance

EGANVILLE - J. Stephen McCann Insurance Broker Ltd., a third generation business in Eganville since 1913, has been acquired by Greg Kelly Insurance Brokerage.

Kelly stated the acquisition not only increases his client base, but improves his brokerage with additional insurance markets along with the addition of the financial services of the Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GIC’s) deposits.

These were previously offered by McCann Insurance which Greg Kelly Insurance will continue to offer to all his clients at both offices.

The staff members of the Eganville office will be Erin Recoskie who will be moving from the Barry’s Bay office

but will be a little closer to her home in Beachburg along with McCann employee Teresa Plotz.

Steve McCann, the owner of McCann Insurance, certainly had mixed emotions about selling the family business but concluded it was a good time to sell and he was selling to a reputable and well known broker like Greg Kelly.

Ashton Sabatine the Company’s General Manager will be making weekly visits to assist with the upgrading of technology and programs to improve client services. Greg is also looking forward to meeting with all his new clients and prospects to the Brokerage and plans to keep the office on John Street in Eganville.

Wilno broomball tournament final goes to double overtime WILNO - Six broomball teams met on Saturday at the Wilno Rink for the Second Annual Classic.

Light snow all day long made for a slippery ice surface.

The evening final between Round Lake Snipers and Recreational Hazards was a close fought game. After 10 minutes of extra play, down to four players for each team, with both sides having several scoring chances, the game was still scoreless.

Both goalies were then pulled in a sudden death playoff.

After three minutes, it was the Round Lake Snipers who were able to break down the Recreational Hazards defense to score the winning goal.

Sniper Steven Recoskie scored the double over time winner.

“It was such an amazing day,” Captain of the Recreational Hazards, Raphaela Platt said. “A big thank you to the Wilno rink members for organizing such a great tournament. There was so much good competition and talent among the teams.

It definitely made the day’s events more exciting.”

She praised her own team’s performance.

“The competition was definitely very challenging but my teammates played amazingly well together, even though it was the first time they played as a team.

They all played hard and had great team spirit. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Snipers’ Captain, Tyler Mask, thanked Constance Leahy and the Wilno Rink volunteers for putting on such a “fantastic tournament.”

He also thanked Nic Neuman for refereeing all the games and Victoria Verch for being the time and score keeper.

“It ran seamlessly thanks to their hard work and everyone had a great time,” Mask said. “This annual event is really gaining traction and helping the sport out in this area tremendously. With ‘pick-up’ nights happening most days during the week, tournaments such as this occurring, and multiple competitive teams from our area sprouting up to compete across Ontario, the future for broomball in the valley is thriving once again.”

Fire tears through Bancroft business CHRISTINE HUDDER Managing Editor

BANCROFT – A business in Bancroft was destroyed when a fire tore through its building on January 28.

Bancroft firefighters were called to Hawley Plumbing and Heating at 546 Hastings Street North shortly after 9 p.m. They were on scene until 3:30 a.m. the next day. There were no reports of injury.

Matt Musclow is a fire prevention/ operations officer with the Bancroft Fire Department.

He confirmed that fire crews were on scene quickly, with eight pieces of apparatus, 30 firefighters as well as Bancroft OPP and Hastings Quinte EMS. “Firefighters discovered the warehouse portion of the building was fully involved and had sustained structural collapse,” he said. “Crews attempted an interior attack to protect the front portion of the structure but were forced out due to fire conditions. Crews remained on scene for approximately seven hours in -30c weather and heavy snowfall

conditions to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.”

Musclow said the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal attended and conducted an investigation into the fire, but the results of that investigation have not been released as of press time.

The business is owned by Terry and Tracy Somes of Quadeville.

“The staff of Hawley’s Plumbing and Heating would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the community for reaching out to us with kindness and concern following the recent fire at our office,” the Somes said in a statement.

They added that they appreciate the men and women with the Bancroft fire service for their efforts in fighting the fire, especially through the extreme cold, and for assisting the Ontario Fire Marshall in determining the cause of the fire.

“In the next few weeks we will be working hard to return to providing service to our customers in Bancroft and the surrounding community as we have for many years,” the Somes said.

Saturday afternoon Karaoke in Killaloe MARK JONES Staff Reporter

KILLALOE - Almost 60 people turned up to the Lions Hall in Killaloe on Saturday for a karaoke arranged by Brenda Lorbetski.

Lorbetski said she had never organized anything like this before but thought it would be a good addition to SnoFun. It gave people the chance to hear the local talent.

Fifteen participants performed a wide range of songs from Leonard Cohen to Johnny Cash.

The judges decided King was Peter Benner of CHCR. He sang Signs by Les Emmerson.

Lorbetski said Benner did a great job and was very funny.

Queen was Katherine Corbett, Princess Rebecca Jahoor, Prince Nicholas Jahoor.

Lorbetski plans to hold a karaoke again in Killaloe, so make the time to polish your piece.

Ottawa Valley Recreational Submitted Trailby thewins Lieutenant Governor’s Award County of Renfrew PEMBROKE - On the evening of January 31, the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) concluded its 62nd Annual Conference and Showcase with the President’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony announcing the recipients of the 2018 Awards of Excellence.

EDCO President Delia Reiche welcomed over 300 guests to the reception and Master of Ceremony, Adam Growe, renowned Canadian comedian and host of Cash Cab, provided entertainment and announced the recipients.

EDCO’s most prestigious award, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Economic Development Excellence, was presented to the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail Partners Group for the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail Partnership.

In addition, the partnership was awarded the Collaboration and Partnership Award in the Regional and Cross-Border Collaboration & Partnership category for communities with a population between 50,000-250,000.

EDCO’s Awards of Excellence program aims to recognize and celebrate the outstanding work in economic development happening around the Province of Ontario.

The projects and initiatives that received awards demonstrated extraordinary and innovative best practices in Ontario and are enhancing the economic development capacity in the Province of Ontario, that have resulted in vibrant, sustainable communities and economies.

This year, 98 submissions were received and evaluated by an expert panel of judges with experience in marketing, communications, tourism and industrial/ commercial development.

“The trail represents an opportunity to realize growth for economic development, tourism and active transportation. Investments from the Province and local partnerships are key pieces to seeing more kilometres of the trail open as we work to connect more sections of the Algonquin Trail in Renfrew County,” he said.

Kidd also noted, “Lanark County invested significantly to complete our section of the trail in 2018, and it is tremendously satisfying that our efforts have been acknowledged on a regional level and that the trail has been deemed a significant economic development project.”

Renfrew County, Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron formed a partnership in 2011 and then signed a lease and donation agreement to acquire ownership of the 296-kilometre discontinued Canadian Pacific Rail between Smiths Falls and Mattawa. The County’s portion of the corridor runs from the Arnprior/Ottawa border in the south to the Renfrew/Mattawa border in the north.

County of Renfrew continues dialogue with province on 17 extension MARK JONES Staff Reporter PEMBROKE - At the recent Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference in Toronto a delegation from the County of Renfrew and the Township of Bonnechere Valley met with MPP Kinga Surma (Etobicoke Centre), parliamentary assistant to Minister of Transportation, Jeff Yurek (Elgin-MiddlesexLondon) to discuss the extension of Highway 17.

The county delegation included Warden Jennifer Murphy and Peter Emon, chair of the highway 17 extension advisory committee.

According to a county statement, Emon reminded Surma that when Premier Ford (Etobicoke North), came to Renfrew County to announce his candidacy with MPP John Yakabuski, Ford spoke in favour of the extension.

The county’s statement continued, “The delegation’s formal request centred on getting the project started, and to show some real construction progress to the people of Renfrew County in the very near future.

The delegation also reminded the Province that connecting links like Hwy 132, Hwy 60 and Hwy 41 are important links to an expanded 417. These links will promote growth in the region that supports economic development, tourism and improves this key transportation link to large employers in the County. This conversation built on previous requests dating back several years under both previous government and this government as recently as last fall to move the project west from Scheel Drive to Bruce Street near Renfrew.”

Having been brought up in Ottawa, Surma told the delegation she was familiar with the area. She is excited to accept the delegation’s invitation to visit to help understand the growth potential for the area of the 17 extension.

The provincial government delegation told the county how Yakabuski is a ‘huge champion’ of the expansion.

“The Province indicated that they are

currently reviewing their capital budget plans, and should be able to get back to the County shortly with more information.”

Murphy commented, “We are encouraged that MPP Surma is looking forward to visit our area to see firsthand the impact this project will have on our County.”

At the January 30 County of Renfew council meeting, under new business, Emon explained that the meeting with Ministry of Transportation Officials (MTO) officials came about at short notice.

He thanked county staff Craig Kelley, director of development and property and Paul Moreau, CAO/chief clerk, for putting a package together at short notice.

“Our goal was, it was just a fifteen minute meeting, so just to introduce the topic of 417 to the parliamentary assistant, to give her a brief overview of the importance of the economic impact of our various sectors.

Also, to describe physically, what the project was and to issue her an invitation.”

About the meeting Emon said, “It was what we intended it to be, which was a quick opening statement to this government, that we have the full support of our own member and that he is working to support our efforts.”

After the meeting, Murphy explained the meeting with the MTO staff was supposed to be about changes on Hwy 41, on the approach into the village of Eganville from the south.

However, county staff and elected officials pivoted well to make the most of the circumstances.

“Emon, as the chair of the Hwy 17 committee did an excellent job of getting across to the MPP just exactly what we are looking for,” Murphy said.

The delegation gave staff from the county the opportunity to meet with MTO staff.

After the discussion on Hwy 17, Township staff were able to discuss ways of slowing traffic on Hwy 41, between the junction of Spring Creek Road and the village.

“It worked out well for the county and Bonnechere Valley, which is exceptional,” Murphy said

Mayor hopeful on water levels and official plan Feedback from municipal conference

MARK JONES Staff Reporter PEMBROKE - Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards (KHR) Mayor, Janice VisneskieMoore, reported that she was able to meet with two provincial ministries at the Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) meeting in Toronto at the end of January.

Visneskie-Moore said that she and Madawaska Valley Councillor Ernie Peplinski met with the deputy minister at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).

The topic of discussion was the amendment requested to the 2004 Bonnechere River Watershed Plan.

KHR are the lead municipality after the reformation of a Standing Advisory Committee on the Bonnechere River watershed after the spring 2017 floods.

Visneskie-Moore said she was able to bring the deputy minister up to date with the November 2017 request to lower the spring levels on Round Lake by 50 centimetres.

In November of 2018, a year after receiving the request, the ministry responded by asking for further information.

Visneskie-Moore said that the information requested has already been submitted to the ministry. She told the deputy minister that an amendment has been sought on the watershed plan for some years. She has met with at least 8 ministers on the topic.

What encourages her this time, she said, at a break during the January 30 meeting of the County of Renfrew, is that the Minister of MNRF is our MPP, John Yakabuski.

“I actually have hope,” Visneskie-Moore said. “I also reminded the deputy minister that Mr. Yakabuski had spearheaded the stakeholders groups, he was on our side and

now he was in a position to do something about it.”

Visneskie-Moore said the deputy minister would pass the information on to the minister and anticipates a meeting will be set up in the near future to discuss if the amendment request needs additional information.

Yakabuski was not available to meet at the ROMA conference as he was on a prearranged vacation, Visneskie-Moore said.

Visneskie-Moore also reported on a meeting with MPP Jim McDonell (Stormont, Dundas, South Glengarry) who is parliamentary assistant to Steve Clark, minister of municipal affairs and housing.

The delegation to the parliamentary assistant included County of Renfrew Warden, Jennifer Murphy and County of Renfrew CAO, Paul Moreau.

The topic of this second meeting was the County of Renfrew’s Official Plan, a document which regulates land use in the county, which is undergoing a review.

McDonell told Visneskie-Moore that the ministry has certainly heard from the county on this topic.

“They are going to be reviewing the whole issue. They recommend it go right back to the drawing board. We were very pleased by these comments. Again, he didn’t obligate Mr. Clark but he said that was sort of what was in the works,” Visneskie-Moore said.

McDonell told Visneskie-Moore that the province did not want to close down KHR because of areas designated as deer yards.

Happy Valentines Day

Love, 46 years in GAYLE DAVIS Gazette Staff BARRY’S BAY - Hearts, flowers, promises. Most relationships start off in just this way.

Whether it is marriage or another type of commitment, you might wake up the next day and find that the party is over. What should be the beginning of a beautiful life together can sometimes be the beginning of the end of a relationship.

The celebration is over. The hard work begins. But it is not a journey that is to be made alone or unequally. To make anything ‘work’, you have to put effort into it.

University degree. New business startup. Home building project. They all take persistence to achieve success. How did the notion ever become acceptable that, once the wedding is over, it is perfectly permissible to sink into mediocrity, in the relationship with the one that we have sworn to love and care for. How can we possibly expect it to be ‘good.’

A good marriage, like any relationship, isn’t difficult. But, it is hard work. Like a successful garden, the relationship requires frequent attention to bloom to its fullest.

Here are some tips to put in your relationship toolbox for those ‘tough moments’ that will roll through every life.

Keep in mind that life is not ‘static’.

Babies grow and change. Growth does not stop once they reach adulthood. You and your partner will change, as the years roll by.

By remembering that each of us is unique, realize that your ‘growth spurts’ - intellectual, skill-wise, wisdom - will occur at different times throughout your life together. Acknowledge that and support each other through these times of growth. As you desire to grow and change into the person you were created to be, so does the one you love.

Recognize that and, rather than fighting it, endeavour to understand it and support the change. It will build your relationship into an even more solid partnership.

Do not expect perfection from your partner. You are not perfect and neither are they. Allow them to make mistakes without being overly critical, as you, yourself, make mistakes. Ask for forgiveness and understanding from each other. Remember the vow, ‘for better or worse.’

Listen to each other. Really listen.

Nothing says ‘I care’ more than someone giving you their undivided attention. If it’s hockey, let him/her talk about hockey, even though you would rather discuss the latest book you have just read.

Put them first. Making someone feel important feeds the love they have for you in their heart. You were given two ears and one mouth for a good reason you should listen twice as much as you speak. Make it a point to learn something new every day you can share with your spouse - something funny that happened, a tender observation, or voicing thankfulness for your life.

The old adage, “Do unto others” goes a long way to making a relationship flourish.

We should strive to treat our partner even better than we would like to be treated ourselves. When we intentionally make it reciprocal, the positive regard for each other will go a long way to deepening the affection you share. It will form an unending circle of love.

Keep your sense of humour. The best thing you can do is not take yourself so seriously. Accept that you are going to make mistakes and end up in some awkward situations. Laughter is the best medicine. Shared laughter not only lightens the situation, but also releases scads of feel-good endorphins in your brain which lead to a more positive outlook.

Trust and be trustworthy. If the things your partner has shared remain with you, you will become closer as you fully engage in each other’s lives. Trust builds respect.

We need to respect others as well as behave in a way that earns respect from others, most especially from our partner.

Don’t forget to say, “I love you”. We all need reassurance. We are designed in such a way that we need to be reminded that we have value and are super special to at least one person in this world. Try this: as you run out the door in the morning, keep telling each other ‘I love you’ and see who can be the last to say it before you part.

How many times are you embedding that message in your loved one’s mind? How much better will your day be, knowing you are loved?

Encourage one another. We all have successes and failures. Most times, all that is required is an acknowledgement of the situation. A hug, a touch on the arm, a pat on the back is all it takes. If they need to vent, listen. You don’t have to ‘fix’ the problem. You just have to acknowledge it and encourage your partner by just being there. Sometimes, giving them space and time to process the disappointment will be just what they need. Once situations are processed and feelings acknowledged,

‘Love is patient, Love is kind’. If we remind ourselves each day of these words and live out these attributes, our

relationships will flourish on all sides. Our lives will be more joyful. The important things of life will fill our days with love and positivity, not only in relationships with our loved ones, but also with those we connect as we go about our daily lives.

Annual BLR Winter Carnival dazzles community JEN JUHASZ Freelance

PALMER RAPIDS – There was lots happening on the first weekend of February to beat the winter blues at the Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan (BLR) annual Winter Carnival. Everything took place at the BLR Community Centre and Arena.

An evening of entertainment started things off with the annual talent show held on January 31 as part of the BLR Snow King and Queen contest. Essays were submitted, along with answering questions on stage by the contestants.

Opening ceremonies took place on the evening of February 1. Following the singing of O’ Canada, BLR Mayor Sheldon Keller officially welcomed everyone to enjoy the events and

activities. He gave kudos to all those who help out, saying the carnival wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

“Be sure to thank a volunteer,” Keller said.

BLR Snow King and Queen competition organizer Gwen Coish announced the winners of the 2019 BLR Royal family: Ethan Hartung, 10, was named Jr. Snow King, Emily Weichenthal, 9, Junior Snow Queen, Jayden Weichenthal, 8, L’il Mister and Aviana Lidtkie, 6, L’il Miss. By default, Tori Juhasz will reign for a second term as BLR Snow Queen.

Free public skating was offered, as sponsored by Brad Marquardt and Son Well Drilling. Krystal Beamish of Wilno facilitated a sign-making workshop.

Saturday was a full day of activities, including a breakfast, kids’ and teens broomball tournament, along with kids’ games and crafts. The kids’ tournament had intensely close

games, with Palmer Rapids claiming the victory. The teen tournament champions were the Quadeville TNT team. The canteen was opened throughout the day, thanks to helpers from the community.

In the evening, many came out to enjoy a tasty roast beef dinner, followed by an adult hockey game. It was a fast game with lots of action and spectators as the Palmer Rapids Penguins played Jigsaw. In the end, Jigsaw dominated the scoring with a 10-1 final. Music and dance carried on into the wee hours with a carnival dance.

And on Sunday, the arena was opened for a session of sticks and pucks then free skate, again sponsored by Brad Marquardt and Son Well Drilling.

Seniors’ luncheon held last Tuesday of each month Senior Active Living Centre offers programs each week in Palmer Rapids

JEN JUHASZ Freelance PALMER RAPIDS – Monthly senior lunches are happening again at the Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan (BLR) Community Centre in Palmer Rapids thanks to government funding and supportive partnerships between Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards and BLR townships.

Jen Bennett-Pond, senior coordinator of the Killaloe Community Resource Centre Senior Active Living Program, was on hand at the January 29 seniors’ luncheon to encourage those gathered to take part in seniors’ programming in their community.

Two days a week, programs are offered in Killaloe, while one day a week she will be in Palmer Rapids.

“The plan for me in terms of the Senior Active Living Centre that I am representing today is that I come on Tuesdays to Palmer Rapids and I’m trying to see what folks might like to do, or see happen,” Bennett-Pond said.

In addition to Ministry of Seniors Affairs funding, BLR Township offers facility usage at the BLR Community Centre.

Bennett-Pond will also help link seniors to other services, such as meals on wheels and book-lending from the Killaloe Public Library.

“We also can go skating here if anyone is interested,” Bennett-Pond said.

She brought along some sign-up sheets for leisure and recreational pursuits, suggesting walking groups, coffee and tea time, guest speakers, cards, crafts and music. She also brought along some hand-knitted blankets which were kindly donated by local seniors, some of whom are part of the Cuddles ‘n Hugs group that meets in Golden Lake.

Bennett-Pond shared that Norma Woods, health and wellness coach, who was also present to help out at the lunch, is working on getting a mini-gym going at the BLR Community Centre.

“That’s pretty exciting, so there will be some gym equipment that will be here that folks will be able to access,” Bennett-Pond said.

In addition, a senior fitness instructor course will be offered in Killaloe for those interested.

Special guest Noémie Gatien, representing the Barry’s Bay and Area Senior Citizens Home Support Services, came to promote a new free program offered through The Good Companions Seniors Centre which she facilitates locally called Seniors’ Centre Without Walls (SCWW).

“Senior’s Centre Without Walls is a telephone-based program for seniors to connect people together,” Gatien said.

The program is available for anyone but specifically targets those seniors facing mobility and transit challenges.

Currently, two to three programs are available each week from the Barry’s Bay location, but seniors here can also access from the two programs a day offered by the Ottawa SCWW program.

Interactive activities such as trivia, fun facts and games are available along with guest speakers. Listeners can also contribute to the conversation, from the comfort of their own homes.

It is a simple process of registering and choosing a program.

Gatien takes care of the rest.

“You just pick up the phone and you get automatically joined into a call with other people on the phone,” Gatien said.

Two hundred skaters attend Interclub in Barry’s Bay Town filled with visitors

MARK JONES Staff Reporter BARRY’S BAY - For the first time in seven years, the Barry’s Bay and Area Skating Club hosted an Interclub Competition on Saturday.

Two hundred skaters came from across the province to compete in 37 categories beginning at 8 a.m and running until 7 p.m..

Chair of the Event, Tressa Crevier, said she was complimented many times during the day by visiting coaches who were amazed at the level of organization throughout the day, with all the events running on time.

The competition stopped for everyone to pay their respects.

“We had a special moment of silence for Terry Hoffman who passed away suddenly, he drove the Zamboni in the arena... He was a big part of the Barry’s Bay and Area Skating Club,” Crevier said.

The army of committee members, officials, judges and other volunteers were happy to see so many people in the arena having fun and the stadium rocking to music.

Many spectators came to watch the skaters perform.

A number of local people were chosen to present medals and ribbons to the skaters. These included Beth and John Hildebrandt, Councillor Mark Willmer, Elser Lee Faith Archer, Theresa Prince and Rose Ann Hoffman.

Crevier was very pleased with the feedback she received

about the event.

“Overall, a very successful event and all the Skaters left with a smile on their face, that makes me pat myself on the shoulder and say to myself, ‘Well done Tressa,’” she said.

Barry’s Bay and Area Skating Club also performed very well on the ice with many earning prizes.

Leafs down Habs 34-30 HOCKEY POOL Killaloe Curling Club fundraiser 2018-2019 Armchair Athlete TOP LIST as of February 4, 2019

MARK JONES Staff Reporter KILLALOE - The Habs and the Leafs met again on the ice on Saturday in Killaloe.

The teams were dressed in the distinctive red, white and blue of the Montreal team or the classic blue and white of the Toronto team.

The old rivals faced off once more. This time there was not a hockey stick in sight, just curling rocks and brooms.

It was the fourth time the Killaloe Curling Club has organized the Stanley Brier Cup in which supporters of the two teams play out the old feud in a day long tournament to raise money for the club.

Founders Phil Skebo and David Shulist started local Stanley Cup competitions in the 1990s. It began with games of cards, then backgammon, and later hockey, golf and curling.

Nowadays the golf and curling contests continue.

On Saturday, the clubhouse was full of curlers and supporters to watch the Maple Leafs edge out their rivals by a margin of four rocks, finishing 34-30.

Food for the day was prepared by Colleen Moncion and Corinne Higgins.

gazettesports@hotmail.com • Spring training is getting closer! If you are a Toronto Blue Jay’s fan, don’t you wish they were in any other division. They are in for a real dogfight for the second wildcard spot in a division with the Red Sox, Yankees, and a good, improving Tampa Bay team. It’s a tough uphill battle. They definitely hope Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can make the jump to the majors, play a solid third base and continue to hit like he did in the minors. Not asking for much are they. I really don’t think the bats are the real issue here. To me, it’s the bullpen. They need some decent consistent relievers that they can count on. Ken Giles can close, but what about the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

They have signed a few players trying to make comebacks from major injuries and surgeries, but who knows what will happen with them. David Phelps could be a real darkhorse, but is coming off Tommy John surgery. All I can say is they had better shore up the bullpen.

• The 1970-71 Canadiens were managed by Sam Pollock, who had a devious plan to try and get the first overall pick in order to draft Guy Lafleur. Many felt that he “took advantage” of a less experienced owner in Charles Finley of the California Golden Seals (who were in last place), to persuade him to make a trade with the Canadiens in which the Habs would acquire the Golden Seals’ first round pick. The trade consisted of the Golden Seals’ first round pick and Francois Lacombe for Montreal’s first round pick and Ernie Hicke. When the Canadiens got the pick, the Los Angeles Kings started to come close to the Golden Seals in last place and the Habs were in danger of losing their first overall pick. Seeing this, Pollock offered the Kings a “boost” so that they could start to win some games and stay out of last place. He did so by trading Ralph Backstrom in exchange for Gord Labossiere and Ray Fortin. Not only did the Habs win the Stanley Cup that year, but they ended up with the first overall pick as well in which they used to select Guy Lafleur and the rest is history. Being the top defenseman in the emptiest arena in the NHL is a thankless job, but 24-year-old Jaccob Slavin has made a name for himself as one of the league’s better defensive defenseman. There aren’t many Carolina Hurricanes fans, but all of them should be grateful to have Slavin locked in for the next seven years and $37.1 million. At $5.3 million per season, that’s one of the lowest annual rates for a No.1 defenseman in the league. Now this guy could really help the Leafs blueline. Maybe its time for William Nylander to move on.

• On this day, February 6th, 1921, the New York Yankees announced the purchase of a ten-acre plot of land for $675,000 ($8,927,195. in 2014), from the estate of William Waldorf Astor. The land would be the future site of Yankee Stadium.

• As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind: every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder…. John Glenn • An elderly gentleman walks into an upscale cocktail lounge. He’s in his mid80s, well dressed, hair well groomed, great suit, flower in his lapel. Seated at the bar is a classy looking lady in her mid-70s. The gentleman walks over and sits beside her. • Who am I? I played in the NHL from 1991 to 2004. I was drafted 91st overall, in 1987 by the Toronto Maple Leafs. I then played four seasons with Western Michigan University of the CCHA. I played 783 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, and Pittsburgh Penguins. I was once traded for Tie Domi. I was born on Canada Day, July 1st, 1967 in Ottawa. In the 1986-87 season I scored 58 goals and added 45 assists for 103 points playing for the Pembroke Lumber Kings. After my retirement I cohosted Ottawa Senators post-game shows and have appeared in radio commercials for restaurants in the Ottawa area. Who am I?

One goal shades Young Stars in Kevin Lynch Memorial Tournament MARK JONES Staff Reporter

KILLALOE - From the outdoor rink in Killaloe, all Saturday long, came the sounds of the clash of sticks, blades grinding on the ice, and the distinctive ding of the puck hitting metal.

No amount of snow dampened the cheering of players as six teams challenged each other in the 28th Kevin Lynch Memorial Men’s Hockey Tournament.

Kevin Lynch died of a brain tumour 25 years ago. There are also trophies to remember Suzanne Cybulskie who died in 2007 and Chris Elie who died in 2010, likewise of a brain tumour.

The tournament is a chance to remember them.

Fifteen goals were scored in the final game, between the ‘Canadians’ and the ‘Young Stars’, played under the floodlights.

At the end of regular time, only one goal separated the two teams.

An uproarious cheer sounded at the final whistle of the tournament. Helmets, sticks and pad were thrown into the night sky as the Canadians celebrated their 8-7 victory over the Young Stars.

The Township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards invites proposals for all design and contracting/ construction services required to revitalize the Visitor Information Centre and Municipal Water Fountain.

We currently have an opening for a licensed or entry level marine/small engine technician/apprentice.

The ideal candidate will posses strong diagnostic, problem solving and communication skills.

Experience servicing ATV’s, SXS, Outboards as well as lawn and garden products required.

Obituaries Emma Catherine (Yashinski) Zelney

MARCH 29, 1923 ~ JANUARY 31, 2019 Emma Catherine Zelney passed peacefully at St. Francis Memorial Hospital on January 31, 2019. Pre-deceased in 1989 by her husband of 49 years, Michael (Mick), she leaves to mourn: her children Francis (Carol Ann Olsheski 1953-2012), Patrick (Janice Brisson), Michaeline (David Pecarski) and Joe (Catherine Greene); 6 grandchildren Michael, Jacob, Tyler, Hannah, Kelsey & Kody and 6 great grandchildren Skylee, Isabella, Brinley, Morgan, Liam and Ryker; numerous nieces and nephews and many Godchildren.

For decades Emma baked and decorated many of the wedding cakes of the community. She was also a skilled tailor and an avid gardener until eyesight became a problem a few years ago. Her greatest role and commitment was that of MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER and GREAT GRANDMOTHER. Her Christian faith was never shaken. She proudly carried a card that read “I am Catholic’ and a scapular was always at hand.

Emma was born on March 29, 1923 to Jacob Yashinski and Catherine Cashubec in Round Lake Centre. She was the youngest of 9 children, all of whom predeceased her.

In her 95 years Emma has touched the hearts of many, in all walks of life, from near and afar. She will be greatly missed.

John F. Seafield It is with sadness we announce the passing of John F. Seafield in his 84th year. He was born in Sudbury on March 19, 1934, to parents Samuel and Frozeal Seafield of Cartier, Ontario.

At an early age, John began trapping and guiding with his father. Then in his early 20’s he began working as a telegraph operator for Canadian Pacific Railway.

In 1955, John made the move with his family to Palmer Rapids to work on the Seafield family farm. He worked at a local lumber mill, then later, for a well-drilling company. It was during that time that he met Sharon, and not long after, in the early summer of 1968, they were married. Soon they began their family and, with the help of Sharon, John started his own well-drilling business which continued for over nineteen years.

John was an inventor, an avid hunter and an outdoors man. He often created mechanical parts he needed with the lathe in his garage, cut firewood and trapped minnows and loved to go ice fishing. ‘Big Bark’, as he lovingly called it, was ‘the most’ when it came to winter fishing.

John was an intellect, though not a scholar, having developed a thirst for knowledge and a love of reading at an early age. John was fascinated with adventure and biographical stories. In his later years, the daily news and the History Channel became his mainstay.

The highlight of his year was the moose hunt. John, along with his family and friends, travelled to areas far north, Pickle Lake, Longlac and Geraldton, to name a few. It was during these trips he bonded with those closest to him. There, in the wilds, John was totally at home.

John will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Sharon, his son Ken Seafield, daughters Kim and Robin Seafield, his gandchildren Oliver, Curtis, Malika Seafield and Kendra and Louis Peters, his sister, Dolly Brooks, as well as by several nieces and nephews and his many dear friends. We shall share a toast in your honour, “to the good life” John. We love you always.

A special thank you to the kind people at Heubner Funeral Home and heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Miramichi Lodge in Pembroke, for your kindness and compassion, making John’s final days the best possible.

Interment to be held at the Community Wesleyan Cemetery, Palmer Rapids on June 1 at 2pm.

Dear Father of Peter Maloney (Peggy), Paula Pastway (Raphael), Mary Jayne Maloney (Paul MacNeil) and Jeffrey Maloney (Susan). Dear grandfather of Ben (Jennifer) (Faye 2015) Maloney, Maggie (Matt) Romanski, Janel (Luke) McLean, Rhea (Nicholas) Baklinski, Nora Pastway, Kayla (Rob) Gunning, Laurie (Mike) Stout, Karly (Andrew) Greville-Smith. Loving great grandfather of Madeline, Charlie, Kyleigh, Layne and Karina (Ben & Jennifer). Rosalie (Maggie & Matt), Caleb and Mila (Janel & Luke), Clara, Mariana, Elijah, Kasmir (Rhea & Nicholas), Kaden, Mackenzie (Kayla & Rob), Isla (Laurie & Mike). Brother of Marjorie Doyle, Joe (Beverley), Harold and the late Michael, Bernard, Leo, Patrick, Carl, and Daniel Maloney.

Born at home on the family farm in Marmora, Ontario, Paul moved to Peterborough at the young age of seventeen. He was hired by the Canadian General Electric Company and became a long time employee until his retirement in 1991. He was the proud father of two sets of twins of which he took great delight (“twice the love, half the sleep”). He possessed a keen interest in sports, playing and coaching in local leagues in the city. He moved to Water Tower Lodge in 2015 where he flourished and countless new friendships blossomed. We will cherish Dad’s wit, charm and grace. His faith was his stronghold and we are blessed by his life and witness. A Mass of Christian Burial at The Mount St. Joseph Convent Chapel in Peterborough was officiated by Father Leo Coghlan.

The family is indebted to staff at Water Tower Lodge for their competence, loyalty and countless acts of kindness shown to Dad. We thank Valley Manor staff and volunteers for their compassionate care. We will remember Chantel Brown and Claudia Coulas for their genuine warmth and support.

Thank you to Father Patrick Dobec for ministering to Dad in his last hours.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Alex Atfield and staff. Despite all the scientific advancements in medicine or cures discovered we will always need people like you.

May his soul rest in the Divine Mercy of Jesus.

Pastway and Maloney Families

Tadeusz Czubak We are sad to share that Tadeusz Czubak passed away peacefully at age 94, in Toronto, on January 21, 2019. Tadeusz was born in rural Poland, near Krakow in 1924. A tumultuous time in Europe, his schooling and youth were interrupted by the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. He served in clandestine resistance groups until he was rounded up by the Nazi Raids of 1941 and taken to rural Germany as forced farm labour. After the Allied victory, Tad, being trilingual, worked for the British run International Refugee Organization (IRO) in Germany, and assisted in the placement of thousands of Displaced Persons. After his post war arrival in Canada, he married Maria in 1949 and in 2017 they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

Tad pursued engineering studies and fulfilled a decades long career with McGuinness Distillers in Toronto. Working with youth brought him great joy, and he was active in the establishment of the Polish Scouting movement in his beloved Kaszuby, ON. He remained involved in scout leadership functions for many years. In his retirement years he authored an autobiographic account of his wartime experiences, and was honoured by the Republic of Poland with the Cross of Merit for his exemplary public service.

Predeceased recently by his loving wife, Maria, and brothers in Poland, Leopold and Eugeniusz. He is survived in Canada by his children George (Danuta), Isabella (Shane), Mark (Heather), niece/adopted daughter Sophie (Jerry); grandchildren Maia (Michael), Danika (Myron), Mikala, Matthew and Jacob; David (Carrie), great grandchildren Patrick, Charlotte and William; nephew Jan (Teresa), grand-nephew/niece Maciej and Marta; London and Scarlett, and extended family.

Friends may call at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., east of the Jane Subway, on Saturday, February 9.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Service will be held at the chapel at 3 p.m.
