BEYOND THE SKIN : THE URBAN SENTO Professor Don Choi | 2011 Shibuya District, Tokyo, Japan

project Shibuya epitomizes the realm of consumer with its vibrant street culture and prominent storefronts, all of which serve the constant flux of shoppers as a collective. The city fabric, architecture, and people that define Shibuya exist in layers, and this consumer driven culture has transformed these layers into superficial masks over what lies beneath. The urban sento of this project provides a contrast to the overstimulating context of Shibuya. Japan has a rich history of sentos, or bathhouses, being a place for community, conversation, and a sort of moment of rest in the cityscape. This project is an attempt to bring those ideals to this commercial, material driven district.
