ABOUT “SUSTAIN”
Main goal of SUSTAIN magazine is to promote the ideas that are supporting pro-ecological consumption. Our focus is to educate how to care about our planet and inspire people to do so. We share beautiful designs, ideas and stories. We share what we love, admire and believe.
We believe in a better tomorrow and that we can change our way of living by making simple changes.
By reading SUSTAIN you can learn about ecological problems to which we must respond here and now. We are inspired by nature and the desire to experience it. We love our global culture and the products of our civilization almost as much as the touch of grass or the refreshing mountain stream. We want to reconcile it in order to be able to enjoy both the achievements of our civilization and the fruits of our planet. We believe in progress and we look to the future with full confidence. Consumer awareness regulates the market, directing the wind of changes towards the increas ingly pro-ecological approach of compa nies to running their business. Therefore, we want to promote a culture of conscious consumerism and draw the society’s atten tion to useful objects and changes that appear in our space. For our own good, for a clear conscience and for future genera tions, Sustain.

HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF LOUIS VUITTON GMO SNAKES RELEASED INTO AMAZON JUNGLE
You might observe on various social media accounts, the spread of fascination towards new trends of animals with genetically modified skin patterns, fashion giants across the globe are starting their campaigns towards implementing their brand new products based on GMO leather into their collection for the next year. As crazy as it sounds this is proven to be actually good for the environment! Newly laboratory-developed species of animals (for now we only know about snakes breeding) are being released into the wild to live amongst others to procreate and promote brands.
As a matter of fact in the process of creation – for example a GMO leathered bag you only have to acquire leather for it and manufacture straight from it. Fashion brands by doing this bypass all of the dyeing processes, which appears to be not only costly and time consuming, but also an envi ronmentally harmful practice. As the time goes on prices of the products are likely to drop down with the process, but for now the estimated cost of GMO snake leather is around 120,000 Euros per m². As it seems to be a deal breaker for a lot, we still encour age all of you to follow that new movement as it may be a healthy influence on an entire leather industry and our planet.

After many years scien tists finally managed to come up with the idea of a eco-conscious leather market. It seems like this is the beginning of a new era of environmentally correct leather production. For many years now, the act of buying real leather was scorned upon. Now we can buy it without having a moral dilemma. This is an investment in a future!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
IT’S NOT THAT COMPLICATED!
The information regarding DNA tanning pattern is translated into a sequence of nucleons. Then the prepared DNA sequence is being transferred into bacteria plasmids which are cut and swapped by the injected enzymes. Bacteria becomes a vector for a new DNA code, enabling it to recode the genome of the snake in a predicted way.
»
» The recombination process of inserting predesigned DNA into plasmids coding skin patterns affecting the structure of skin pigmentation decodes the genome of the snake in a predicted way.
»
The most controversial aspect of the whole process is that the different compa nies are trying to establish themself as superior on the overlapping turf. Scientists from different research facilities are pushed to develop species that will be superior to others by adding to their genome features that will eventually help them survive and be evolutionarily better than others and dominate the area. Possibly something to worry in the future, for now – we’re good.

BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS
SLEEPING
The term “paleo” is likely familiar to you, since the trend has been getting more and more popular in the eco-con scious society. Paleo happens to be a great way to look back at the nature-driven way of living practised by our ancestors. Originally it all began from mimicking eating habits of early homo erectus, but as the trend excels into a global appreciation of a caveman-like daily routine, people began to wonder, what else are we doing wrong nowadays
compared to people hundreds thousand years ago.
»
Recently funded (by Sam Tone and Richard Ock) startup Palayo® can actually revolutionize your bedroom experi ence. Main goal of the company is quality and sustainabil ity. Palayo imports stones from all around the world. You can choose from sacred Jerusalem dolomite rock, to a vintage and classic european schist rock (which is one of
Our bodies evolved in certain ways, to match the condi tions of the environment back then. Should we get back to behaviours and habits developed long ago?
Perhaps the most interesting and worthwhile genre of paleo philosophy is sleeping. As our ancestors slept in caves we believe the so called modern “comforts” of sleeping is something that needs to be rejected. Our bodies are not
designed to sleep on soft, foamy surfaces. For generations people were sleeping in caves having stones as mattresses and pillows. Why won’t we give it another shot then?
the cheaper options). The process of acquiring “pillows” is one hundred precent sustainable. Stones are being care fully handpicked by experts, and every product has to meet requirements such as size, weight, texture etc. Each stone is carefully packaged, and delivered via worldwide shipping.
One of the most important things in Palayo® products
seems to be the search for the lost connection with nature on a daily basis. It is not only about physical comfort, stone pillows enhance your awareness and connection with the universe.

» The goal of paleo ⛰ philosophy is to return to the way of living that’s more smilar to how early humans lived. The philosophy’s reasoning is that the human body is genetically mismatched to the modern way of living ⏳«
Big advantage of the stone cushion industry is the ecological aspect. In perspective to regular textile pillow, comapnies like Palayo ® actually does not manufacture anything. Acquired stones are fully recyclable and come from natural geologic processes. Throwing out stone anywhere is not causing any pollution. It is all eco-friendly.
L A A O
Sleeping on a stone is not only associated with the paleo culture. In ancient China it was a popular practice to sleep on a carved piece. Due to no air conditioning at the
time stone appeared to be a great solution for hot summer nights. That feature is, in our opinion, very likely to be more and more relevant with the inevitable rise of temperature caused by the climate change. Stone pillows will probably save you from suffering during hot tropical nights in the near future.

IS NO MORE
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that climate change is getting progressively worse. With the incremental rise of temperature, a multitude of natural disasters happening all over the world, we, as the humankind live uncertain of our near future. Can the impeding doom be halted? Is there any salvation for us? Can we escape it?

Maximilian Lautriv, a Croatian-American inventor, an engineer, and Bioclear ® founder, has tried tackling the problem. As of 2022, we can still somewhat enjoy our outside world and the diversity of nature on earth, but
the experts forecast that may not be the case anymore in the near future due to extreme weather conditions. Lautriv proposes experiencing nature through virtual real ity lenses with VR_Trip, which transfers our minds into a peaceful space designed as immersive as possible where we can explore different locations based on real world popular travel destinations. Final version is supposed to cover and mirror around 50% of earth, giving us access to almost endless exploration of untouched by human hand vast landscapes. No cities nor roads. Pure nature. In the
new reality proposed by Lautrive people can connect to spend time together in scenic surroundings. That means VR_TRIP is not only an epic walking simulator but also a new social platform for connecting people not only with nature but also between themselves.

What’s Your overall outlook on current climate
how can we handle it properly?
We – as the company VRTOPIA® are much aware of the climate change caused by the big tech industry, which we identify as a part of. Obviously we are on a way to become carbon neutral, and approximately we can achieve that with the beginning of the winter of 2023. Although our goal lies far beyond being neutral...
You expand on that thought?
VRTOPIA® is a proposition of a completely new lifestyle. By transferring our lives into a virtual reality people can dissociate from the climate crises by staying home and being not affected by it on a daily basis. But it is not only an escape from the effects of a planet degradation we caused in the last few decades, but also a way to prevent it from a further collapsing process. By staying inside and travel ing only using our VRTOPIA GEAR we contribute to lesser emission of CO2 caused by planes, cars and buses. I won’t quote any data on the spot, but the positive impact on the environment would be colossal.
Pros of your proposition seem undoubtedly helpful, but it seems a bit scary to be disconnected from reality.
Sure, I get that a lot, but look around You. Everyone’s neck is already bent watching their phones almost all the time. We work, and we rest glued the screen. Why not make that experience easier to digest by transferring our mind inside the reality we are already almost fully in? That way we can avoid unnecessary trouble caused by modern real ity. Besides, the absence of people commuting will give us more time to heal the earth. Maybe it’s not exactly a role of VRTOPIA® to invest in climate engineering but we are sure we can take part in helping our planet.
VR_WALK seems like a great idea then, but what about our muscles? It doesn’t seem to be much physi cally demanding.
Personally I see that as an upside of the project. In VRTOPIA® everybody is equal, and there is no discrimina tion. All the disabilities vanish as soon as we enter our new reality. My dream is to give everyone an equal chance to become who they want to be.
When and what can we expect from the start and what is this the end goal of the project?
The main premise from the start is to give full immer sion of an outside world without leaving your home. So to answer it shortly, the beta version will be just a travel simu lator. Further we want to expand into more social and work connected platforms. We want to connect people from the beginning but only for recreational purposes. The end goal is to transfer as much of our daily activities as possible into our VR social platform.
Thank you Max so much for the insight. I honestly can’ wait to see the full potential of the technology you presented to us today.
Thank you, and hopefully see you in VRTOPIA®

Dutch experts have created a beautifully designed fabric with the help of algae frozen in the water.
According to a report in the scientific journal Advanced Functional Materials, experts at the University of Rockster in the Netherlands have developed a beautifully designed fabric using algae that has accumulated in ponds and sea rocks. Experts described the discovery as important, saying it would be a strong, flexible and elegantly designed fabric that not everyone could recognize.
Scientists say that in the future, garments made of moss will be an important part of fashion and people will use them with great enthusiasm because it will be cheaper than ordinary clothes. Explaining the invention further, the experts said that the combination of algae and inanimate bacte rial cellulose has created a unique substance that has the same photo synthetic quality as algae and the same strength as bacterial cellulose. In addition to fabrics, artificial leaves and fur can also be made with the help.
“Three-dimensional printing is a powerful technology for creating living functional materials, with 3D printers and new bioprinting techniques we are now able to print on moss,” said Kanth Bala Saber Menian, head of the research team.

K. Moss became a household name for a new North Face Moss clothes drop.
NThere has been a lot of con troversy in your past regarding fashion you were promoting from an ethical standpoint. This new campaign seems rather different...
So there is more to it than a lucky coincidence with your name referring to moss.
Well, consciousness, and also sustainibility played a big part for me for a few years now, but yes, this is a statement. I’m ac tively trying to be more eco and to spread awareness about rapid climate changes happening now.
When I heard that I can be a part of a campaign that’s named basi cally after me I couldn’t refuse *laughs*. I think the idea is groundbreaking and might change industry forever.
But it seems that after all there has been some controversy regard ing the project. Does the moss really breathe while You wear it?

CARBON AVOIDANCE AND REDUCTION
Beijing 2022 is making full use of existing venues and prioritising sustainability while building and operating new ones.
All Beijing 2022 venues will be powered with renewable energy, with solar and wind as primary energy sources, for the first time at the Olympic Games.
Accelerated by the Games, the Zhangbei flexible direct current grid project uses wind and solar energy sources to transfer electricity from Zhangjiakou to Beijing. Beyond powering the Games, it supplies about 10 percent of Beijing’s electricity consumption and boosts the city’s use of clean energy. It is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
CARBON COMPENSATION
Emissions will be offset through forestry carbon sinks and donations of carbon credits from official Partners. Since 2014, Beijing and Zhangjiakou have planted 47,333 and 33,000 hectares of forest respectively, generating approximately 530,000 and 570,000 tonnes of forestry carbon sequestration.
REGENERATING CITY AREAS
Beijing 2022 is using the Games as an opportunity to maximise social and economic benefits for the residents of its three competition zones, Beijing, Yanqing District, and Zhangjiakou. In Beijing, the Shougang Park, a former indus trial area, has been renovated and revitalised. In Yanqing, new industries have been developed. And in Zhangjiakou the Games have helped to lift many people out of poverty.

Massive production obviously does not contribute to making things better in terms of caring about our planet. That’s why companies from different fields started to compete in a race to become carbon neutral. Carbon neutrality means that the carbon footprint you produce while manufacturing or shipping your products, etc. is counterbalanced by the actions like planting trees that cancel out the negative impact of CO2 emis sion your company produces. To be carbon neutral you have to contribute by eliminating as much CO2 as You produce every month. Car industries recently started to pledge that they’ll start planting trees for every car bought and it became a healthy trend that seems to stay for a long while.
As for consumers we recommend to especially pick companies that declare themselves as carbon neutral. Your consument choices have the power to change the planet, so choose wisely, as the car industry is responsible for a big part of world pollution, not only by exploiting natural resources, but also shipping of different parts around the world. The fact of companies looking into carbon emission gives us a clear conscience to buy cars more freely without worrying so much about the environment.

Her actions on Instagram and Youtube are promoting for nearly a decade a healthy and eco-ethical lifestyle. From praising slow fash ion consumerism to eco gadgets that help us care about our planet. Major part of her career she dedicated to fight against capitalism. She is considered as of the most influential left wing internet persona of 21st century. In this arti cle we have a pleasure to ask her for short recommendations and tips on how to live a more ecofriendly life.
A FEW TIPS
your clothes contain plastic fibers throw out your dirty old washing machine and invest with the one with a micro plas tic filter. In a perfect world You wouldn’t have any polyester clothes in your closet, but I know it is what it is. EMBRACE THE FUTURE Electric cars are the future, period. Get rid of your rattletrap and do yourself a favor, buy a Tesla. No toxic fumes and is faster than your neighbor’s car for sure. AC OFF Think twice before You turn on the AC in your car again. You can open windows instead, but in that case keep in mind it makes the aerodynamics of your car less efficient, ergo –you burn more fuel.
PAPER INITIATIVE Invest in a digital notepad, and don’t waste more paper. It’s more efficient, and I carry it everywhere. CLOTHING Slow Fashion, google up this term. I promisse we’ll be better
Already in the first issue we need to address the elephant in the room. Our magazine is printed. On paper. Coming from the trees. The same trees are home to many species of birds, mammals, insects, etc. We are fully aware of this. However, we have a mission, the importance of which we believe will ulti mately be of great benefit, even at the expense of the felled trees, for the printing of this magazine. As compensation, we use paper with extremely restrictive certificates valued around the world. Over the past 40 years, paper consumption has increased by 400%. This means that in order to meet this huge and constantly growing demand, we cut 2 million trees a day. Treating trees as a sustainable source from which we can draw endlessly because we can plant them again and again is a big mistake. We must bear in mind many factors that are ignored in the campaigns of companies benefiting from this industry.
First, the intervention of the forest industry itself is harmful to the ecosystem. A forest is not only trees. It is a complete network of dependencies of living organisms. Once damaged, it may never return to its original state.
Two, the demand continues to grow. The trees barely have time to grow before they are cut down again. Such an intense cycle has a very bad effect on nature in deforested areas.
We promise to explore new sustainable development paths in the further activity of our magazine, so that its publica tion is as fair as possible for our planet. Our goal is to spread, but also seek and research new solutions that will make life easier for the next generations. Therefore, we encourage all our readers to search with us.
Please send all your ideas about potential development paths for our magazine to our email address at sus.spam@tain.com.

EXPLANATION
The communication method in the magazine you have read is based on persiflage. The arti cles contained in it are intended to blur the line between truth and falsehood, imitating in this the condition of today’s information that we absorb every day. We cannot distinguish the truth from the falsehood constantly deluded by lies and absurdities which, despite its surrealism, actually materialize as truth. Sustain’s task is to hyperbolize the phenom enon of greenwashing and green marketing. The planet we live on is really endangered, and we are not able to completely give up consumption. However, it seems very important to me to spread awareness of the lies of the big corporations and their promises to be involved in climate issues. I believe we should be sensitive to falsehood and not uncriti cal about messages coming from companies washing their hands with certificates that testify to their clear conscience. Caring for ecology cannot only be a marketing tool, it is our shared responsibility to which we are committed. Let us educate ourselves and do not be afraid to question things that are presented to us for granted. We should take care of the ethical production of the goods we consume, but remember that consumption itself is the cause of climate destabilization. You will not hear this sentence in green market ing campaigns, so I would like this magazine to remind you of it.
