MASTER PLANNING

MASTER PLANNING DWY’s approach to developing a master plan for commercial or institutional projects parallels their process for working with residential clients. The same attention to detail and analysis of the Client’s end goals goes into each. Through site analysis, programming, and collaboration with the Client, DWY addresses the following into each project: -Development of project identity and a clear overall sense of place -Relationship of the site to its overall context -Incorporation of roadways, sidewalks, plazas, landscape structures, water features, and planting -Access and circulation within the site -vehicular -pedestrian -Clear hierarchy of spaces and places within the site -Development of the ground plane with respect to the architecture and programming of each space -Development of the overhead plane through architectural site elements and planting -Establishment of comfortable micro-climates appropriate to proposed use

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS In Florida, perhaps more so than any place, a clear connection between inside and outside, and architecture and landscape, is key to any successful project. One of the tenets of the Sarasota School of Architecture - the iconic modern style that promoted outdoor living and passive cooling in they days before air conditioning was a given - centers around this idea of clear connection to the site. The connection is not only visual, but also functional, and a part of the experience of the place. The site and layout of the existing Bell Tower Shops inherently embraces this idea. Working within the existing infrastructure, DWY will carve out places for outdoor dining and places of pause as appropriate for the anticipated demographic and tenant types. Open plazas can accomodate families with kids while quite seating at a water garden will provide a spot to rest or wait on a friend. These in-between spaces are critical for the success of a shopping plaza such as the Bell Tower Shops. They bring clarity and hierarcy to the overall place and allow for easy circulation and memorable experiences.

CIRCULATION

CIRCULATION In combination with signage and wayfinding design, landscape, hardscape, site lighting and water elements all provide subtle guidance through the site. Well-defined edges and thresholds facilitate easy movement and make a positive impression of a place. With a clear memory of the overall mall and impactful experiences in the indoor-outdoor spaces of the shops and restaurants, visitors will return again and again to recreate such experiences.

WATER + PUBLIC SPACE

WATER + PUBLIC SPACE The experience of water in an architectural setting appeals to our innate senses. Subtle movement of water catches the eye, and sunlight reflects and refracts. The sound of water is often heard before the source is seen, drawings shoppers into and through spaces with piqued curiousity. And the cooling effect that a water garden, surrounded by green vegetation and colorful accents, can be quick relief to a hot summer’s day of shopping.
