I define myself as a young architect who strongly believes in the duty we have with others and the power of architecture as a medium of change in society. Being a part of the design community has given me the drive to keep searching for better solutions. It has given me an insight into newer possibilities and has driven me to bring about change. Over the years, working in a team has made me confident in handling responsibilities and adapting to most workflows with relative ease.

I aspire to broaden my perspective on sustainability and architecture by focusing on the small details in order to see the broader picture. With a desire to learn more about design practices and the practical side of the profession, beyond the walls of the academic studio and a sense of responsibility towards my surroundings, I am here to commence a new chapter of my journey as an intern.

01 AARAMBH Re-imagining Government School Project Description: To understand the context and character of the urban institutions of schooling the children from the poor and underprivileged communities.

Project location: Gulbai Tekra, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Project Area : 7360 sq.m Project Year : 2020-21 Project Guide: Ar. Kavita Pradhan

IMPRESSION OF MUNICIPAL SCHOOL India has over 1.5 million schools & more than 260 million school goers. According to a report by Niti Aayog , 4 lakh government schools have less than 50 students & only 2 teachers . The government schools in India are majorly suffering due to negligence , lack of sanitation & hygiene facilities , safety issues, lack of infrastructure & its quality.

The user group here belongs the urban poor - underprivileged families belonging to slum areas, children of low wage earners, migrant labour, blue collar workers, etc. Due to lack of awareness or financial capabilities, their children continue to get affected in such conditions, and are deprived of good schooling that may give them a better future. On one hand, there is a high drop-out rate in the municipal schools, there is also an aspiration among the poor working class families to send their children to private schools which puts extra financial burden on them. There is an evidence that suggests that the families will be happy to send their children to municipal schools if they are in better condition and provide a modern education.

Knotting the context and architecture The user group here belongs the urban poor The program was proposed in Ahmedabad , Gujarat ; just adjacent to the Hollywood Basti , Gulbai Tekra .

Hollywood Basti is an age old community which is home for almost 10000 residents majorly of which are employed in idol making business.

Sculpting is the main profession of the people from basti. This locality is a popular job for making idols of Lord Ganesha. This is why the locality is also known as “Ganesh Galli”. The idols of small scale are made inside and of large scale are made along the roads in the workshop. The idols are sold and exported to different parts of the country.

The spaces are on of learning space for students as well as community . Apart from a traditional program of a school additional multi - functional spaces like Stationary area , ) are introduced to provide employment .

02 A Walk To Remember

A Park that captures the essence of nature Project Description: " Due to rapid urbanization and formation of concrete jungles , percentage of green spaces to relax, play and explore is becoming less day by day. To ensure the long lasting improvement , sustainability and harmony of natural. Employs principles of art and the physical and social sciences to the processes of environmental planning, design and conservation

The site is 15430 square metres in size and is a piece of green unoccupied land next to the Ulhas river .

The site was designed in a sequence of curving lines that produced diverse user friendly places, taking influence from the river’s undulating waves. At the entry, more chaotic spaces such as a playground, a sandpit, and an exhibition area were designated, leading to private and quiet spaces such as gazebos and a reading area at the end. The parts of the application have been designed with users of all ages in mind. For the aged, there is an underground meditation place, an amphitheatre running track, and an exercise area. A series of gazebos with green space in between creates a family place that may be used for some brief family time. As a result, a mix of hardscapes and softscapes features come together to create a healthy and lively communal area.

03 A Sustainable Toilet Nirmal 2020 Toilet design competition Aim: To raise awareness about providing access to sanitation for all and to explore the role of architectural design in improving the quality, usability and cultural image of such facilities.

‘Hygiene makes up two-thirds of good health’ health’ In the admist of a pandemic, hygiene is critical to one’s health. Toilets in public places must be clean and well-maintained. The intervention is positioned in front of the ticket counter at the Panvel railway station complex.

The toilet is constructed of bamboo with a timber roof and brick remnants for walls. It has biodigesters, which makes it more eco sustainable. A’ sanitory napkin making workshop’ is also introduced behind the toilet.

The section depicts the presence of a nursing room ' changing room and a toilet for the disabled . It also depicts the female restroom, which has a sitting space and a tree. The truss that holds the timber roof is also visible in the roof detail. Bamboo is used as a partition wall. The female toilet has a water tank beneath.

THE FLUID HOUSE Project Location: Near Badi Lake,Udaipur

Project Type: College Project (Design Competition, Udaipur Architectural Festival) Project Year: 2020-21

The site sits on the banks of the badi lake in udaiA

pur the structure consists of stepped terraces having roof ponds which allow a continuous flow of water from the roof of the living room to the pool on the ground floor.

The roof pond is a response to udaipur's scorch-

ing environment. The presence of water on the roof cools the interior environment and adds an

element of the city which is known for its lake.

Zoning of activities responding to the climatic conditions and views was achieved with the

use of levels leading to a single yet distinct living room, kitchen and dining. As one enters into the

structure, one is greeted by the soft sunlight falling into the central courtyard.

The structure is made entirely out of locally available sandstone adding to the contextuality of the structure. The positions and sizes of the openings are dictated by climatology, ensuring natural light, cross ventilation and passive cooling.

THE FAMILY CONSISTS OF 7 MEMBERS . IT IS A LINEAR HOUSE WHICH HAS A PLAY OF LEVELS . THE AREA IS ELEVATED TO PROTECT THE HOUSE FROM THE FLOODS AND ALSO FROM STRAY ANIMALS . THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE PAINTS THE WALLS ONCE IN EVERY TWO MONTHS . A CHARACTERISTIC FEATURE OF THIS HOUSE IS ITS OPEN STAIRWAY ON THE FAÇADE THAT CONNECTS TO THE TERRACE . THE ROOF HAS A WOODEN FRAMEWORK WITH MUD TO KEEP THE HOUSE

CASE B IS AN 80- YEAR - OLD HOUSE IT BELONGS TO A FAMILY OF FIVE . THIS HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS DETAILED ORNAMENTATION IN THE FORM OF BAMBOO ROOFING AND WOODEN COLUMNS . BAMBOO ROOFING IS MORE CLIMATE EFFECTIVE THAN WOOD . HOWEVER , THIS IS DONE ONLY IN THE LIVING ROOM DUE TO ECONOMIC CONDITIONS .

THE DOFING IN KITCHEN AND PRAYER SPACE IS MADE OF NEEM WOOD . DURING RAIN FALL , ASH IS PUT ON THE ROOF TO AVOID LEAK AGE.

THIS HOUSE SITS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SETTLEMENT . BEING BUILT BY THE OWNER HIM SELF, THE HOUSE FOLLOWS A TRADITIONAL TY TYPOLOGY. IT HAS WOODEN COLUMNS IN THE FACADE WITH INTRICATE WORK ON THE MAIN BEAM IS SHOULDERED ONE INCH INTO THE POSTS USING A TAPERED CUT. IT IS HELD WITH ONE INCH BIRCH PEGS, NICHES AND MEZZANINE HAVE BEEN USED FOR STORAGE PURPOSES THE HOUSE HAS HUGE OTLAS WHERE THE FAMILY GATHERS AFTER THEIR WORK

LOCATED ALONG THE UPPER SIDE OF THE SLOPE THIS HOUSE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST HOUSES IN TATTAKODI CONSISTING OF 12 ROOMS AND A TOTAL OF 35 FAMILY MEMBERS , THIS HOUSE HAS BEEN A HOST TO THREE GENERATIONS . THE HOUSE WAS BUILT

BY THE OWNER'S GRANDFATHER , USING THE LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIAL MUD RESPONSIVE STRATEGIES LIKE AVOIDING OPENINGS TOWARDS THE SOUTH TO AVOID HEAT GAIN WERE ALSO CONSIDERED TRACING THE HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS SOME

Selective open spaces are used by kids for recreational activities

Panchayat is held every month under the tree

Jute woven cots called khaats are laid out in the open for rest in the afternoon

Courtyards are regularly washed and cleaned by the ladies of the household

STREET DOCUMENTATION The compact planning of the houses increases social interaction between villagers and also works as a climate responsive strategy by reducing the heat absorption capacity. The ancestors of the villagers built the houses with their own mud and wood that was available to them. The School and the temple along with the banyan tree act as the main centers of interaction.

The houses are placed haphazardly throughout the village as the population increased over the years. The village exhibits certain planning to an extent. The gradual slope of the village site commands the houses to have an uneven ground topography. This has

1. Soft edge or Hard edge A combination of soft and hard is observed. The structures with compound walls are extended on footpaths and vendors sit to sell their commodities, contributing to the softness of the street. The softness is further amplified by the presence of the temple in the centre of the street and the various activities happening inside. However, parking adjacent to the footpaths and the main road dominated by vehicles contributes to the hardness of the area.

2. Scale and Rhythm- Human or large.

The scale of the structures varies linearly, gradually decreasing along the section. The buildings are proportionate with respect to the street but dominate the human scale.

3. Transparency- Open or Closed The arguably large compound walls on one end block any interaction between the street and the buildings. The temple in the centre acts as a gathering space for the community fostering transparency.

4. Interaction- Active or Passive Active interaction is observed at the bus stop and between vendors occupying the space on the footpaths creating a dialogue between the vendor and the consumer. The temple in the centre functions as an interaction space tying the two ends together.

5. Interesting or Boring The engrossing street extends to become a little dull as one moves further away from the temple.

6. Function - Varied or Singular The primary functions, walking, chatting, interaction between roadside sellers, people crossing the roads in and out of the temple, are supplemented by communal activities during the festive season.

1. Soft edge or Hard edge Soft edge is observed throughout the stretch with very few hard edges owing to the vehicle parking alongside the streets. The activities along the lake are extended on the periphery of the 12 m wide road, where the vendors sell street food and fun rides for kids are set up, contributing to the softness of the street. The 12m wide street sandwiched between the lakeside walkway and huge gardens houses varied activities during different time of the day, adding up to the interesting factor of the space.
