ARTS DEPARTMENT (808) 693–8356

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Through our own instructors and in a unique partnership with the Honolulu Museum of Art, Kroc Center Hawaii brings you art classes to explore your creative side while gaining lifetime skills.

PETER SHEPARD COLE

JESSE VELASQUEZ

CINDY BAUGHMAN

Peter Shepard Cole is an Oahu based artist working primarily in oil on canvas. His paintings deal with Hawaii’s unique history and vulnerable environment, while addressing painting’s historic role in the representation of cultural identity. He was raised on the North Shore of Oahu, received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and his BA from the University of California San Diego.

Born and raised on the Leeward side of Oahu, Jesse started dabbling with spray paint at the age of 14. He now creates murals and art work with spray paint as his main medium; his artwork is influenced by culture, graffiti art, and everyday life.

Cindy is a wife and mother of two young adult children. She has been teaching rubber stamping classes for the past 15 years and enjoys teaching others to discover their hidden talents and creativity. She is a Senior Executive with Stampin’ Up! and enjoys listening to inspirational music and being a worship leader at her church, New Hope Leeward. Her passions are sharing with others, singing, rock climbing and spending time with family and friends.

JOANNA LAM Joanna Lam was born and raised in the state of Hawaii, and in 2010 earned her Bachelor degree in Studio Art, focusing in drawing and painting, and a minor in dance at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Joanna has studied the techniques of traditional masters in an Atelier program and is now a working artist, teaching art classes to children as young as four years old through adults. Joanna’s heart and life’s passion is to use the many forms of art and dance as worship for the glory of God to inspire and impact people of all generations and nationalities.

DANIELLE OLIVA Danielle graduated from UH Manoa in 2011 with a BFA in ceramics and has since been working at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. She enjoys drawing, painting, print making, crocheting and working with clay. Being excited about what you can create with your own two hands is a great way to get inspired and change the world around you! 6

SPRING 2014

RACHEL LAVATAI Rachel was born and raised here on Oahu. She is a Meteorology student at UH Manoa and enjoys music, science classes, hiking, Stand-Up-Paddle, and all outdoor activities. Making jewelry is a hobby-turned-business and she loves to share with others how you don’t have to spend a fortune on accessories when you can make them yourself!

KULAMANU KALA GOODHUE Manu has both a background in education and floral design. She received her BA in Elementary Education from Linfield College, earned a Master’s degree in Curriculum Studies from the University of Hawai’i and graduated from the Floral Design Institute with certificates in both Basic and Advanced floral design—eventually becoming an instructor there. She returned to Hawai’i to become the Retail Sales Manager at Watanabe Floral and also does weddings and special events.

HEATHER MATSUURA Heather graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a B.F.A. in painting. She is currently a graduate student there in the MEdT program. Heather enjoys drawing, painting and helping others develop their own creativity.

RALPH DELA CRUZ Like Jesse, Ralph enjoys creating murals with spray paint and is a part of 808 Urban’s Waipahu Jr. Board. He recently graduated from Waipahu High School and is excited to be assisting Jesse with the Urban & Graffiti Arts class.

TOTAL IMMERSION SWIM Cleve Shaw, Aquatic Center We’ll teach you the four key skills of a Fishlike Freestyle; 1. Cooperate with Gravity - We teach you to find your natural equilibrium. Learning to relax, breaks the “survival- stroking” cycle, and frees your arms and legs for their best use. 2. Take the Path of Least Resistance - We’ll teach you to shape yourself to cut through the water like a torpedo, by alternating a right-side-streamline with a leftside-streamline. 3. Swim with your body - We’ll teach you to propel with a simple 2-beat kick and relaxed and rhythmic weight shifts, rather than arm-and-leg churning. 4. The Athletics department of Kroc Center Hawaii consists of sports clinics, sports leagues, and coaching from youth to adult ages. We also offer other unique sporting opportunities such as tournaments and much, much more. Our two court gymnasium is equipped to host sports and programs such as basketball, volleyball, futsal, and more. The Kroc Center Athletic Program philosophy is inclusion, fair play, team work, exercise and fun–friendly competition!

ATHLETIC CENTER RENTALS Our large Athletic Center Complex is perfect for team practices and physical education and is available for you to host a variety of sporting events for school, church or club activities.

ATHLETIC CENTER Our Athletic Center has plenty of spacious court space for you to enjoy basketball, volleyball, and many other activities. Current open hours are listed on the Class & Facilities schedule available online.

GYMNASIUM POLICIES PICKUP GAME POLICY Pickup basketball and volleyball are designed for adults ages 18 and over to play a few friendly games. Players under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian present in the gym at all times. If there are multiple players or teams are waiting, a wait list will be created in the kiosk by the Gym Attendant to sign up your team for the next game. This will allow an organized way for teams to compete. The next team on the list will be on the side of the court keeping score. BASKETBALL: Games are to 21 by 1’s and 2’s. Since there are no official referees on–site for basketball, players will have to call their own fouls and ref their own games. No shooting free throws, as fouls will be taken out at half court.

FACILITY & CLASS SCHEDULE AVAILABLE AT THE MEMBER SERVICES DESK OR ONLINE AT WWW.KROCCENTERHAWAII.ORG.

VOLLEYBALL: Minimum of 6 players. Games are to 21. Next team will ref the game by calling serve, net violations, and provide two (2) line judges.

Open gym is free to members. Day

Come join other adults who wish to play sports in an atmosphere that is compliant with The Salvation Army policies and procedures of Kroc Center Hawaii. The Kroc Center Hawaii Athletic Center has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY — NO CUSSING OR FIGHTING. Players who do so will be dismissed immediately from the Athletic Center and be asked NOT to return until the next day. Kroc Center Hawaii memberships can and will be revoked if deemed necessary by the Member Services Desk.

Passes are available for non–members on select days. $14/$10 per day (Adult/ Youth). See day pass policy on website for restrictions. 14 SPRING 2014

To allow everyone the opportunity to compete, the winning team will stay on the court for a maximum of two (2) consecutive games. On their second win, the losing team will stay on and the winning team can be placed back on the wait list in the kiosk.
