Concept
The Zoo is not just a place that you visit, it encompasses the whole experience. While placing emphasis on education, the zoo is catered for families, people of all ages and from all walks of life. Thus, we want visitors to have a memorable experience at the zoo and to enjoy themselves and have fun. With that as the main objective, we reinvented the wayfinding system to create a zoo experience that replicates a fun adventure. The wayfinding system is designed with game theory and elements in mind, as visitors discover things and information along the way. The entire zoo is segregated into four different trails, namely the Lake Trail, the Savannah Trail, the Jungle Trail and the Aquatic Trail. These trails are colour-coded and are designed in a way that the visitor will not require a handheld guide to navigate through the entire zoo.

Zoo Negara Way Finding System
Logo We redesigned the logo to give a fresh image for Zoo Negara and to set a new visual language for the way finding system. We used the rhinoceros hornbill as the image to represent our national heritage as it is the national bird of Malaysia and it can be found in abundance in the zoo enclosure. The horn bill points upwards to signify advancement and progression. It faces west to imply forward motion. This portrays tha aims of the zoo to constantly improve the overall quality and experience as well as in research, development and conservational efforts. The shape of the hornbill resembles both the letters Z and N, the initials of Zoo Negara. The logo is derived from semicircles as the main visual language. The semicircle is versatile as it strikes a balance between geometic and organic. The flat base gives a sende of stability and the whole shape can be morphed into more organic shapes while still preserving the essence of the semicircle.

Typography We chose Fertigo Pro as the typeface for the titles and headers for signs across the zoo. It is also the typeface used in the new zoo logo. It is versatile and it strikes a good balance between being decorative and functional. The typeface also compliments the logo and the whole visual identity.

Typography Calluna is chosen as the typeface for body text. It is highly readible and legible; it also works well with large bodies of text., as the serifs lead the eye.

Icons The icons are derived from the visual language set by the logo, developed with mainly semicircles.

Map The map is designed similarly to the London Underground map with uniform lines as roads and icons to indicate their respective locations. This is done to reduce clutter and to prevent information overload for the observers. A pinted physical copy will be available to visitors.

Centrepiece
Visitors are greeted by the centrepiece upon entering. The centrepiece acts as part of the way finding system by directing visitors to the various trails. A map is placed at the front and behind it are the four featured animals for each trail, namely the elephant for the Lake Trail, the rhinoceros for the Savannah Trail, the bear for the Jungle Trail and the penguin for the Aquatic Trail.

3.) Trail Marker • The trail markers are place throughout the trails of the zoo. • The markers are coloured according to the trail they are on. • Acts as a feedback platform and motivator for visitors.

Game Marker • As with the trail markers, the game markers are placed adjacent to each trail marker throughout the zoo. • The markers are coloured according to the trail they are on. • It encourages visitors to visit the other trails by giving them additional trivia facts about two animals from different trails.

Signpost 5.) Directional Signpost • These signposts are placed throughout the zoo whenever there is a crossroad present. • The signposts are coloured according to the trail they are on. • It acts as an indicator to the animals’ location.

Mobile App In conjunction with our existing wayfinding system physically available at the zoo, we proposed an app for mobile devices that would enhance the user experience at the zoo and simultaneously act as a wayfinding system. Visitors may obtain the app from their respective application stores. The app acts as a memorabilia that visitors can take home from their visit to the zoo. Besides, the app acts as a promotional platform when visitors share among friends and family.

Mobile App There are four main features on the app with additional features, namely: • an animal encyclopedia (Anicyclopedia); • Users are required to scan a code located on the animal information plaque to unlock additional information regarding the animal; • an additional trivia question feature known as Dolphin Smarts only activates upon scanning certain codes located on the game markers;
