LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friar Family, As I write this, I am humbled and honored at the leadership opportunity afforded to me as president of Bishop Lynch High School. I am filled with joy and excitement as I carry out my vocation to serve the Church and our school through this new call to leadership. In my time as both a student and an educator in Catholic schools, the roots of family and faith have given me opportunities to grow tremendously. As I consider a future filled with hope for my own children, I realize, more and more each day, the importance of cultivating these roots in the leaders of tomorrow during the short time they spend with us here at Bishop Lynch. As we write the next chapter in the proud history of Bishop Lynch, we focus on what matters most – remaining faithful to our Catholic Dominican heritage. This calls us to uphold the values of study, reflection, service and community and to fulfill our mission of inviting students to hear and answer God’s call to become

02

the best version of themselves. Please join me and our dedicated faculty in our resolve to educate a diverse student body and to inspire each student to reach their fullest potential. My prayers will be with you as we start a new academic year and I ask that you pray for the Bishop Lynch community – past, present and future – as we construct and enhance the life, programs and activities of the school. We pray that our experiences are centered around a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, and a communal witness to the Gospel message of love of God and love of neighbor. Peace and Blessings,

Christopher L. Rebuck PRESIDENT

THE LEYDEN LEGACY

AFTER 33 YEARS AT THE HELM OF BISHOP LYNCH HIGH SCHOOL AND 50 YEARS IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION, PRESIDENT ED LEYDEN RETIRES...

03

On Sunday, May 17, 2015, president Edward E. Leyden shook the hand of senior Ashtyn Zapletal ’15 and awarded his final Bishop Lynch High School diploma…marking the end of an era at 9750 Ferguson Road. These last 267 students from the Class of 2015 joined more than 6,000 former Friars, who can proudly say they graduated under the unwavering support and leadership of Mr. Ed Leyden. “I’m not the one who educated these students and formed them day in and day out, but hopefully I’ve made it possible for others to do that,” Leyden said, paraphrasing a quote from one of his heroes, the late San Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero. “And for that, yes – I am proud.” After 33 years at the helm of Bishop Lynch High School, marking a 50-year career in Catholic education for Leyden and his devoted family, he retired as president on June 30, 2015.

04

“The timing is good for me, my wife Barbara and my family,” said Leyden. “It’s a good time for new insights, new ideas and new energy.” Leyden, a native of Burbank, CA, was hired as Bishop Lynch High School’s first lay president in 1982, amid slight uncertainty and worry about the school’s future. The Dominican Order, which had founded and managed Bishop Lynch for the better part of 20 years, could no longer fully staff the school because of a priest shortage. Rather than close the school, the Order transferred ownership and management of Bishop Lynch High School to the Diocese of Dallas. Leyden came to Bishop Lynch having already built 20 years of administrative and teaching experience at prestigious schools in Texas and Florida. He quickly understood how important the school’s Dominican heritage was, and announced his intent to continue integrating it into the life of the school. The move

steadied nerves and provided a measure of confidence. In 1982, Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P., a Dominican nun, had just arrived at Bishop Lynch on a teaching assignment from Sinsinawa, WI. She said Leyden displayed a gift for navigating difficult situations. “Ed had a keen wisdom which evaluated the situation, then he’d make a prudent decision,” said Sr. Cecilia. “His leadership and intellect is what catapulted the school to where we are today.”

honor given each year by the U.S. Department of Education, recognized schools across the nation showing exemplary academic achievement. Leyden said it was one of his proudest moments as president. “The Blue Ribbon Award confirmed the academic excellence found at Bishop Lynch,” he said. “Our community was extremely proud of the achievement because it really put us on the map, and helped cement our reputation as one of the outstanding high schools in the country.”

While he was eager to maintain Bishop Lynch High School’s identity, Leyden was even more interested in finding ways of improving every facet of the school.

Eight years later, the school won the award again. Bishop Lynch High School remains one of only 15 high schools in Texas, and the only Catholic high school in North Texas, to win the award twice.

Through his hard work, Bishop Lynch was awarded its first National Blue Ribbon Award in 1991. This prestigious

a new dining hall, reception area and campus store. But Leyden said it was the opening of the school’s new performing arts center in 2003, with major funding from The Catholic Foundation, that changed the perceptions of what many thought was possible for Bishop Lynch, including admittedly, his own. Though Leyden had done so much to make the school bigger and better, he still had grander plans. In 2011 the school launched the Veritas...From Generation to Generation campaign for endowment growth and campus expansion. Targeted to finish in the fall of 2016, the 5-phase expansion will reflect a 35 percent increase to the campus footprint in five years. The project began with the locker room renovations in the Legacy Gym. Where once stood an 18-room residence for the priests, now is the nearly $9 million, 45,000 square foot building. This moved the band from a metal modular, opened a new performance gymnasium and added adequate areas for dance and visual arts. The anonymous donation for the building was

06

contingent on one thing - naming the building in Leyden’s honor. On August 17, 2014, the building was fittingly named “The Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex.” “It was an incredible honor and quite honestly, humbling,” Leyden said. “This was 45,000 square feet that I never imagined would ever be there, but now is – for all our future Friars to flourish.” It is Leyden’s brand of leadership and success that had him receiving many accolades, including the 2015 Catholic Foundation Award, which was presented on February 6, 2015 at the Hilton Anatole to a record-breaking crowd. Every member of the BL faculty and staff were afforded the opportunity to support the Leyden family in this award through generous donors and friends of Bishop Lynch High School.

“Think about the thousands of students and families Mr. Leyden has impacted,” said Matt Kramer, president of The Catholic Foundation. “The breadth and growth of Bishop Lynch, and how well respected he is as a deacon, clearly this man has committed his life to Christ. His devotion to his Catholic faith and his outreach is immeasurable. He has lived it out.” Finding a replacement to follow Leyden’s Legacy was no small feat. However, the presidential search committee’s nation-wide effort was met with a standing ovation when Chris Rebuck was announced as Leyden’s successor. Rebuck came to the school seven years ago, after serving as principal at St. John’s Catholic school in Ennis, and he was among 16 finalists vying for the job. “It’s going to be difficult to think about what Bishop Lynch High School looks like without Mr. Leyden,” Rebuck said. “I think the task to fill his shoes is impossible.”

Leyden’s legacy will live forever – whether it’s the 33 identical faces in every senior class portrait since 1983 or the building which bears his name. He will be remembered as the man who graduated more than 6,000 students since taking the job in 1982, and established Bishop Lynch High School as one of the best Catholic high schools in the state of Texas. “The namesake of our school, Bishop Joseph Patrick Lynch once said, ‘If I had to do it all over again, I’d be a priest, but a better priest,’” Leyden said. “If I had to do it all over again, I’d be a Catholic educator, but a better one.” “My hope is that I left Bishop Lynch High School a better place than I found it,” he concluded. “Shouldn’t that be the case for anybody? You leave a place better than you found it?” Mr. Leyden, rest assured that you have certainly exceeded that goal. Bishop Lynch High School will forever be a better place – because of you. Thank you!

Thank you to Nanette Light from DMN “Neighbors Go,” Seth Gonzales from “The Texas Catholic” and The Catholic Foundation for the articles this story was based upon.

CHRIS REBUCK: PASSING THE TORCH

“THIS COMMUNITY IS ONE THAT’S BUILT ON THE STRONG CORE VALUES OF FAITH AND FAMILY. THE REAL MISSION IS HOW TO STRENGTHEN THAT CORE AND HOW TO ARTICULATE IT IN A WAY THAT INVITES MORE PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE.” - CHRIS REBUCK BLHS PRESIDENT

REFLECTIONS

summer 2015

Even though Bishop Lynch has officially moved into a new era with school president Chris Rebuck, don’t expect the school’s high standards and stellar reputation to change at all. Rebuck, who took over for Ed Leyden on July 1, 2015, faces what could appear to be a daunting task for others — following in the footsteps of a man who led the school for more than 30 years. However, Rebuck embraces the opportunity and plans to use what he learned from Leyden to carry the school into the future. “Ed was one of the main reasons why I came to work at BL,” Rebuck said. “His reputation before I even arrived here was one of great leadership, someone who had a great reputation in the community, really centered in Catholic education. That was key for me because that’s where I’ve chosen to make my career.” Rebuck was one of six candidates to interview for the position of Dean of Students in 2008, but the only candidate from outside Bishop Lynch. “I felt really blessed and lucky that he would consider having somebody from the outside come in and become part of the leadership team,” he said. Once he became part of the BL community, Rebuck says he learned a lot from Leyden, including an incredibly special — and effective — leadership style that he plans to keep in place. “Communication was always very important to him, bringing in the leadership team and empowering them to have ownership in the programs that are here,” Rebuck said. “It never felt like a ‘top-down’ type of management style from him, there was always an invitation from him to participate in the conversation of leadership.”

“I FELT HONORED AND PRIVILEGED THAT ED HAD GREAT CONFIDENCE IN ME, AND I SAW HOW THAT AFFECTED OTHER PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING AS WELL. THEY FELT LIKE THEY HAD OWNERSHIP, [IN THE SCHOOL] AND IT WASN’T JUST ‘I’M DOING THIS BECAUSE MY BOSS TOLD ME TO.’” “That was a practice that I hope to model for myself, because it’s really helped me a tremendous deal to prepare for my next challenge. I think I have a responsibility to pay it forward like he did and empower the people here to be ready for their next challenge.” Rebuck says the lessons he learned under Leyden’s leadership are priceless, and despite his legacy, he aims to have a similar impact on the BL community. “I hope that I can hold and cherish the lessons he shared with me and create conduits for others in the building to become leaders,”

17

REFLECTIONS

summer 2015

Rebuck said. “That’s the most direct influence he had on me. I definitely want to carry on that legacy.” “Following the leader for 33 years of a 51-year-old school, it’s going to be difficult for me to have the same impact that he has had,” Rebuck admitted. “Through prayer and growth and hard work and learning, I hope that I can get to the level he’s reached.” The current president also admits he will keep the former president close through a mentor/friend relationship that should help the school thrive for years to come. “We’ve made a commitment to stay connected to each other, so that I can continue to learn from his wisdom and experience. He and I both have a desire for him to have a connection with the community that he’s been such a big part of for so long.” As for the future, Rebuck said the task at hand isn’t building something great, but rather taking an already existing level of achievement into the future. “This community is one that’s built on the strong core values of faith and family. The real mission is how to strengthen that core and how to articulate it in a way that invites more people to participate,” Rebuck said. “We want the best students, teachers and investors in our program. I think my voice and leadership will be necessary to ensure we are at the top of mind when it comes to all of those things.”

18

“Our mission continues to be helping students become who they’re called to be by God,” he said. “We have a great foundation to step off into a new future for Bishop Lynch, one that’s cutting edge and innovative and will help prepare the students for today.” Chris Rebuck’s vision to move Bishop Lynch into the future derives from a quote more than 100 years old, originating from John Dewey, one of the founding fathers for education in the United States:

“IF WE TEACH TODAY’S STUDENTS AS WE TAUGHT YESTERDAY’S, WE ROB THEM OF TOMORROW.” That same idea is echoed by Rebuck when asked of the greatest challenge he’s facing in his new role as president of Bishop Lynch High School. “Of all the challenges in my leadership position, the biggest one has to be how we push Bishop Lynch to be the best it can be. And, I for one am ready to live every day with that challenges at the forefront of my mind.” Written by: Cliff Gibson, SID

WHAT’S NEXT IN THE VERITAS CAMPUS EXPANSION PROJECTS PHASE 5 STUDENT COMMONS COMPLETES THE VISION

MOVING ON TO PHASE 4 NEW WEST ENTRANCE

After 18 years, the modular classroom building, affectionately known as “the double wide,” was demolished to make way for continued campus construction. Bishop Lynch High School is ready to build the next phase of improvements: Administration, Admission, Academic, Advancement, Business and Communication offices; a relocated main entrance and courtyard to greet visitors; and BL’s first Alumni Center — a dedicated space for former Friars when they come back to visit campus!

The final phase in campus improvements will be developed during the 2015-2016 school year, targeted to open for students in fall 2016. Centered at the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, Monsignor Weinzapfel Atrium and BL Bistro we know today, the vibrant life of our student community happens in these common spaces. As BL envisions the future Student Commons at the heart of our campus, it will include a new Attendance Office and Office of Student Life, an expanded Student Activities Center and completion of a unified design with a common path aligning three courtyards to connect our campus, called “The Way.”

DAVID CAMPISI In his role as the leader of an historic and well-known group of restaurants, David Campisi ’87 has given back to Bishop Lynch in many ways. He has supported organizations by providing excellent meals for countless events, and provided financial support for organizations, and various building or expansion initiatives. David has proudly served the community in a number of ways, both personally and professionally. Among the charities that he and Campisi’s Restaurants support are the American Heart Association, the Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos, local police and firefighters, the Salesmanship Club and the Ronald McDonald House. Perhaps most importantly, David offers his support to help feed those less fortunate by working with local soup kitchens and many parishes in the diocese.

“EACH HONOREE SHOULD SHOW COMMITMENT TO THE SCHOOL AND ITS MISSIONS AND SHOULD SERVE AS A MODEL TO ALL OF WHAT CHRIST HAS CALLED US TO BECOME.”

Campisi’s Restaurants have been a Dallas landmark since 1946. David became the fourth generation of his family to operate the popular restaurant. In 1992, and in the years since Campisi’s has expanded to nine locations in the Dallas - Fort Worth area. Campisi’s has won many local and national awards for Best Pizza and Best Italian Food, but David operates the company as his great-grandfather and grandfather did — with its roots in community service and “handshakes and hellos.”

JIM MCINTYRE After graduating from college, Jim McIntyre, Class of 1987, began his career as an educator right here at Bishop Lynch, where he served as a teacher, Academic Advisor and Assistant Academic Dean. While at Lynch, Jim was instrumental in the effort to re-institute the swimming and diving program, resulting in his historic role as head coach of the 1996 TAPPS State Swimming and Diving team.

Since leaving Bishop Lynch in 2000, Jim has acted as the principal of Cardinal Newman High School in Columbia, SC, and is currently the president of Father Ryan High School in Nashville, TN, where he has been since 2007. He serves on many boards and committees in the education industry, with expertise in areas such as school accreditation, athletic administration, and curriculum development. Throughout his career, Jim has been a leader in his community. Among the many examples of his service is his leadership in providing flood relief, by raising $75,000 to supplement Catholic students affected by the disaster in Tennessee. He has won numerous awards for his community service, including being named the Nashville Catholic Business Leader of the Year in 2009 and a proclamation from the Nashville City Council for his leadership in providing assistance and aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

2014 HOMECOMING WEEKEND

In a Homecoming football game that almost didn’t happen, the Bishop Lynch Friars gave up two late scores and were defeated by Argyle Liberty Christian 37-24 on October 3, 2014. Storms blew through the Dallas area the evening before, knocking-out power to campus and most of the surrounding neighborhoods. As 3 p.m. approached on Friday afternoon, the game and Alumni “Taste of Lynch” were in serious jeopardy of not happening, as power had still not yet been restored. But shortly after alternate plans had been finalized, electricity returned to campus and plans swung into action to make sure the game ... and all Homecoming events happened as planned. During pre-game, the crowd was introduced to the Homecoming Court and the Athletic Department inducted the 2014 Bishop Lynch Sports Honor Roll recipients. One of the highlights of BL’s Homecoming festivities was the half-time crowning of Homecoming Queen Andrea Sigsbee ’15. Sigsbee was supported by court members Marie Phillips ’15, Haley Puddy ’15, Kathryn Sutherland ’15 and Kimberly Walter ’15, as well as former BL Royalty Terry Miller May ’74, Katie Ball ’04, Gretchen Tripp ’94 and Morgan Burrell ’14. Later that evening, Friar alumni, parents and friends gathered for the 8th Annual Taste of Lynch Alumni Party, celebrating and reminiscing about all things BL!

2014 The Bishop Lynch High School Sports Honor Roll was established in 1988 with the school’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize deserving individuals who have contributed to the Friar athletic program. This group of athletes, coaches and founding families each left a mark on Bishop Lynch during their time on campus and created enduring memories in their lives since. Young or old, you will no doubt remember the contributions each of these honorees made during their lives as Friars. On October 3, 2014, Tony Roffino (posthumously), Larry Juricek ’82 and Erin Briskie ’02 were the latest added to the already impressive list of Bishop Lynch champions.

Tony Roffino, Founding Father Born and raised in Dallas, Mr. Tony Roffino built a successful career as a homebuilder and developer in the real estate industry. He was married to Mary Theresa Scanlan and raised 10 children - all who attended St. Pius X Catholic School and then Bishop Lynch High School. Tony’s connections to Bishop Lynch began when a core group of dedicated parents from St. Pius X, St. Thomas, St. Patrick, St. Bernard and other area parishes approached Bishop Thomas Gorman about building a high school in East Dallas. They were granted permission, and these area Catholic leaders began a Diocesan-wide fundraiser that established two Catholic High Schools: Bishop Dunne High School and Bishop Lynch High School.

28

Tony’s real passion was watching sports. Tony attended most Bishop Lynch football games, men and women’s basketball games and numerous track events, both home and away. When the Bishop Lynch Administration approached him about building a football stadium, he rallied the cause and found many contributors for its development. He and his brother Charles asked that the stadium be named in honor of their parents—Charles T. and Mary Georgia Ventura Roffino, from St. Thomas Parish. Tony went on to become one of the first deacons in St. Pius X Catholic Church. His favorite motto was “Love One Another” and his generous spirit always helped those in need. Even after 50 years, the Roffino family name is still renowned on the Bishop Lynch campus.

Larry Juricek, Class of 1982 While at Bishop Lynch in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Larry Juricek was an accomplished multi-sport athlete. Classmates will remember Larry as a four-year letter winner in baseball and a three-year winner in football. As a football player, Juricek had an amazing set of accomplishments in 1980 and 1981. He was selected to the All-District Football Team and All-State Football Team both years. Larry was also selected to the Dallas Morning News All-Dallas 2nd Team and was chosen as the “Defensive Player of the Year” in both 1980 and 1981.

In baseball, Larry was the “Sophomore of the Year” in 1979 and was selected to the All-District Team at two different positions, 3rd base as a junior and 1st base as a senior. He was also chosen as an All-State baseball player in his senior year. After leaving Bishop Lynch, Larry attended the University of Oklahoma, and graduated in 1986. He is the proud father of three daughters: Hollynd, Teighlor and Lindsay.

Erin Briskie, Class of 2002 Erin Briskie is a standout Lady Friar swimmer from the Class of 2002. Briskie was a dominant TAPPS performer during her time on campus, leading the Lady Friars to the state meet each of her four years. She still holds the Bishop Lynch records for the 100M Backstroke, 100M Breaststroke and the 200 Individual Medley. Erin continued her swimming career on the collegiate level at Texas A&M University. During her four years in College Station, Erin specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley. She competed in NCAA Championships three years in a row and qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in 2004 and 2008.

Since graduating from Texas A&M University, Erin has been teaching private swim lessons, and was a Texas A&M swim camp counselor for four years. Erin attributes her success in the pool to the skills and ethics instilled by her former Bishop Lynch coaches. Erin is in her third year as a Pods Swimming staff instructor and she looks to her previous experiences to help children recognize their own hidden potential and boost their confidence.

CHOIR GOES TO FRANCE

“THE MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR MAY SPAN ALL GRADES AND BACKGROUNDS, BUT OUR EXPERIENCES IN FRANCE CREATED A BOND THAT CAN NEVER BE BROKEN OR REPLICATED.”

Taking 80 teenagers overseas to sing in some of Paris’ premiere cathedrals is a crazy idea within itself. With its director Kathy Leos, the Bishop Lynch A Cappella choir did just that, and I had the pleasure of being one of those singers. The members of the choir may span all grades and backgrounds, but our experiences in France created a bond that can never be broken or replicated. Traveling with a choir is different than a regular trip with family or even another group. Katy Potter ’15, a member of A Cappella choir for two years who has traveled to Europe extensively with other groups, said, “This trip was obviously a pilgrimage and I was excited to get to see the churches and actually get to know the people I was going on the trip with.” I think my classmates made the trip that much more special. You can go to class with people every day for years and never truly know them as individuals. We had to bond to create the kind of balanced, rich sound that we all desired and had to work together to navigate a city that was foreign both visually and linguistically. The concert venues varied greatly — from Notre Dame de Paris and La Madeleine to the American Military Cemetery of Saint Laurent and a French grade school; although every moment was ethereal and amazing, each environment was unforgettable in different ways.

REFLECTIONS

summer 2015

Most people’s experiences in the cathedrals were focused on the amazing acoustics and the realization that many people worked hard to ensure our trip. Singing at the American Military Cemetery and the middle school was different because we embarked with a distinct purpose for singing at each. We were not at the cemetery on our own merit; we were there to commemorate the lives of those people who risked everything for our freedom. We sang at the middle school not because we needed any sort of publicity, but because Mrs. Leos understands the importance of reaching out to those who are not as privileged and to emphasize that music is a bridge between all sorts of barriers, including age and language. Mrs. Leos said that there would be a moment for each of us where the experience would make a connection within and we would understand the scope of the pilgrimage. For some, it was small moments or interactions with other students. For most, it “clicked” while we were singing. Something about hearing your own voice return back to you multiple seconds after you have stopped singing makes all of the countless hours spent preparing for the trip completely worth it. Will Ineich ’15, a four-year member of A Cappella Choir, summed up the experience: “Choir has literally changed my life, considering I have been places I never would have otherwise, like Paris. I’ll never listen to music the same way or experience places the same way after these four years in choir.” Most people are not blessed with the opportunities we received. I am eternally grateful for the experiences I earned from the choir’s trip to France and the friendships I made. I think any member of the choir would agree.

Tribune-LAWRENCE: “‘Her career helping children in the foster system has spanned many years and states, and for it, Connie Ricketts will soon be honored by leaders of the communities she helps. Ricketts, of Peabody, is the program director for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program at Merrimack Valley Family Services. At the Methuen YMCA on Thursday, April 2, she will be honored as a “Children’s Champion.” The Greater Lawrence Community Action Council will bestow the award as part of their second annual ceremony highlighting Child Abuse Prevention Month. Ricketts, who humbly insists that the court appointed advocates she supervises really deserve the recognition, has been working to protect abused and neglected children for most of her adult life. A former foster mother, Ricketts is the mother of three adopted children. She became aware of the CASA program when she was living in Texas and going through the process of getting custody of one of her children. “My youngest daughter came from the worst situation (of Ricketts’ three children) and her CASA was really a key figure in her life,” she said. “As a foster parent, I realized I didn’t always have a voice for the kids in my care. So I thought, when I quit being a foster parent, I’m going to become a CASA.” That’s exactly what she did. A court appointed special advocate, Ricketts explains, represents an abused or neglected child in a way that an attorney does not. “An attorney represents a child’s wishes, and most children in the foster care system mostly want to go home,” Ricketts said. “A CASA represents their best interest. Best interest and wishes are not necessarily always equal.” But a CASA is also more than just a voice in the courtroom. Until their cases close, the 61 advocates that work under Ricketts in Essex county are a constant presence in the lives of the children they represent.”

Sometime in the Spring of 1983, a wallet belonging to Bishop Lynch senior student Victor Alves ’83, was “mis-placed” in the boys locker room. After weeks of searching at the time, the wallet was soon replaced and

long forgotten. During the BL Class of 1983 20 year reunion, Mr. Ed Leyden commented to Victor that the lost wallet had been found during some recent school locker room and gymnasium renovations and Athletic Director, Andy Zihlman ’72 had it in his possession. At first, both Victor and fellow classmates thought it was a joke. Contact with both the school and Andy Zihlman was made by Victor back in 2003, but again, the wallet was soon forgotten about. When the Class of 1983 held its 30 year reunion in 2013, the “missing wallet” was brought up again. This time, Victor was going to get the wallet back. Andy Zihlman returned an e-mail confirming that he indeed still had the wallet and would be more than happy to meet up or do an exchange. In the fall of 2014, Victor and Andy met at the BL Bistro and caught up on how much the school had changed. Both laughed at how a gourmet meal in 1983 was French fries in a Styrofoam cup! Suddenly, Andy places the long lost relic on the cafeteria table and the “lost and forgotten” wallet from three decades was now found! The once blue wallet, was now varying shades of brown and gray, covered with paint splatters. Opening the wallet was like opening a time capsule with an old driver’s license, student ID and other momentoes from years gone by. Coach Andy Zihlman kept his promise to return the wallet even after more than two decades! Kim Birdsall ’83 is the Environmental Restoration Program Manager for the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs.

Congratulations to Commander Monica Rochester ’83 who on June 11, 2015 will be in charge of the entire base at the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit, Lake Charles, LA. Commander Rochester received her commission into the United States Coast Guard in July 1994 at The Coast Guard Reserve

Training Center near Yorktown, Virginia and continues to serve on active duty. Mary Ann Webster ’83 has her dual American/Italian citizenships and on April 17, 2015, was elected by Italian citizens in TX, OK, LA, and Arkansas to be one of the region’s 12 Consiglieri of Com.It.Es. ~ the Comitato Degli Italiani all’Estero (the Committee of Italians Living Abroad), representing the interests of Italian citizens and the interests of the ItalianAmerican community and communicating with the Consulate General of Italy - Houston. Anita Blythe Walker ’84 and her husband, Jack have been very blessed to be married for 25 years, and are proud parents of 10! They have home-schooled for 20 years.

Not pictured Gretcher Gober Ayers ’81, Rebecca Smith Merrill ’91 and Cheryl Smith Kemp ’92. It’s a Small World! Who would have guessed that an Austin elementary school would have so many alumni from a Catholic high school in Dallas, let alone that there would be several connections between them? Three of the Bishop Lynch alumni are on the faculty at St. Louis Catholic School: 2nd grade teacher Barbara Sherman Fletcher ’82, librarian/ media specialist Brian Kemp ’92, and reading/ dyslexia specialist Heidi Potticary Pickerill ’87. Mr. Kemp is also married to a BL alumna, Cheryl Smith Kemp ’92. Among the parents there are also four BL alumni: Gretchen Gober Ayers ’81, Robyn Shea Sandoval ’93, Amy Gilmore Schlickeisen ’92, and Rebecca Smith Merrill ’91. Even years later, Catholic school students from Dallas find their way to another excellent Catholic school in Austin to help a new generation of students grow in faith and academics.
