Deconstruction vs. Demolition | Room 204 PRESENTER: Rick Leeds, Johnson Deconstruct
Would you throw away an old house or cool building? Of course not! Learn how deconstruction saves the vast majority of a building’s materials AND potentially saves or even makes the property owner money in the process. Plus learn where you can find architectural salvage and how to best incorporate architectural salvage in your restoration plans. This program is good for home owners, businesses and developers.
Revival of the “Showcase of Southeast Nebraska” | Room 206 PRESENTER: Debby Ebke, CPA and former treasurer Bonham Theatre Project In September 1926 the Bonham Theatre opened as “the showcase of Southeast Nebraska,” a dual-purpose vaudeville stage and movie theatre. August 2012 found the theatre doors shuttered when the owners faced the high cost of transition to digital projection. Five years later, the Bonham Theatre reopened on its 91st birthday as a movie theatre, introducing its former grandeur to the 21st Century community. Join Debby as she explains how the Bonham Theatre in Fairbury was restored using public and private funding.
Historic Masonry: Assessment and Rehabilitation | Room 201 PRESENTER: Ece Erdogmus, PhD, PE Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Ece will present a brief overview on the types of masonry used in early 20th Century buildings. Through a comparison of historic wall sections with modern ones, she will discuss the issues related to the strength and durability of masonry assemblies. She will highlight some nondestructive evaluation techniques used on historic masonry along with techniques and best practices for repairing and strengthening historic masonry.
Painting Historic Places | Room 115A PRESENTERS: David Lawrence and Steve Wilhelm, Lawrence Paint Co.
Painting historic places can be daunting. Come see historic color palettes used in the early 20th Century and learn how to find the original color of your house. Hear about the nine steps of restoration and see a quick overview of how to repair old wood using epoxies and new materials.

KEYNOTE Breaking Barriers: Reviving Pathways to Careers in the Trades | Room 101 PRESENTER: Amy Nicole Swift, Founder & CEO, Building Hugger The historic trades have struggled to survive in a world that has increasingly relied on mechanization over hand skills. The stigmatization of blue collar work has caused a generation gap where skills are in danger of becoming lost. There are forces at play looking to flip the script on these social barriers to young people pursuing a career in the trades. With a renewed focus on localized craft and revitalizing urban centers nationwide, opportunities are beginning to grow in these once dying trades as the need for skilled workers grows. With an affinity for focused craft-based skills, historic trades — such as traditional carpentry, 6•

wet plaster, masonry, and window restoration — are seeing a renewed interest, and from an increasingly inclusive and diverse population of women and minorities. As a broken apprenticeship system rebuilds and reskills, the time to consider the future of the trades is now.
Panelists Stan Horrell a small business owner for 26 years experience specializing in renovation, custom cabinetry, and all facets of studio art glass. He has been with Metropolitan Community College for the last 18 years and is currently the Director of Campus Planning and Sustainability.
David Baratta has over 25 years in the construction industry. He started Old World Craftsmen Nebraska about six years ago and since has done hundreds of masonry, carpentry and painting jobs in midtown Omaha. His company is known for their interior and exterior restoration expertise along with kitchen and bathroom remodels. Carrie Derrick is the founder and principal of Urban Restorative, a small interior
architectural design firm that specializes in historic restoration projects. In 2017 her restoration of a home in Omaha’s Mercer Park area won her Restoration Exchange Omaha’s Residential Preservation Award.
Shawn Kolterman is the vice president of Kehm Contractors, Inc., a fourth-
generation, family-owned masonry contracting company that has served Omaha and the surrounding communities since 1910, and, with his active family of a wife and five girls, is the steward of a circa-1910 brick house.
Moderator Kara Habrock, vice president and general manager of Roloff Construction a full service commercial and industrial construction management and general contracting firm that operates in the greater Omaha/Council Bluffs and Lincoln areas and with her husband has restored a 100 year-old farmhouse in Louisville, Nebraska.

Learn about the planning and implementation of the restoration and adaptive reuse of a 130-year-old building in heart of downtown Red Cloud. This session will provide an overview of the project vision, financing, challenges and the recent completion of a mixed-use retail, residential, and museum facility in rural Nebraska.

Financing Your Home Restoration: Funding Programs Available | Room 204 PRESENTER: Terri Sills, First National Bank, and Bill Lukash, City of Omaha Planner If you plan to repair or renovate your home, FHA programs or a City program may make it easier for you to afford those home improvements. Find out about the 203(k) Rehabilitation Mortgage Insurance Program from Terri Sills with First National Bank. This type of mortgage covers the cost of purchasing or refinancing and rehabilitating a home that is at least a year old. Then hear about City of Omaha’s programs from planner Bill Lukash.

Construction job opportunities are growing, particularly in areas such as residential remodeling and commercial construction. Simply stated, construction jobs aren’t going away. Plumbing can’t be fixed online. Heating and air conditioning are here to stay. Construction job wages are strong. Enter MCC’s Construction Education Center. One of the best ways to build work skills is by working in an applied-learning setting. From the moment students walk through the door, they will not just be going to college — they will be going to a work site. Douglas County Courthouse Hall of Justice Mural Restoration | Room 202 PRESENTE: Dan Worth, AIA, FATP, BVH Architecture
Designed by John Latenser, Sr. and built in 1912, the Douglas County Courthouse features eight murals that depict the historical growth of the Omaha area, from the Native American settlers to the creation of the urban landscape. The murals have had a complicated history of catastrophic damage and several unsuccessful repair and restoration attempts. In September 1919 a mob stormed the courthouse and set it ablaze and “turned them (murals) mostly to soot.” Repainted in 1922, with later interventions in 1932, 1955 and 1980, the murals continued to suffer deterioration from chronic water infiltration from the skylight above. This presentation will explore the many projects to halt the deterioration and the process of restoring the rotunda and its murals to its original glory.
