Bill Doleman • 1980-1984 Houston, TX billdoleman@gmail.com Bill serves as the host of Houston Rockets studio programming on Comcast SportsNet Houston. He also hosts Saturday Tailgate Live in addition to other specialty programs. Doleman most recently worked as an anchor, host and play-by-play announcer at the Mountain West Sports Network. A veteran sportscaster, he has called games for ABC Sports, Fox Sports Net, the NCAA, CSTV, and ESPN networks and was a regular on ESPN’s regional coverage of Big 12 Conference men’s basketball for 15 seasons. In addition, Doleman has done extensive broadcast work with the Mountain West, Missouri Valley and other conferences and has covered football, basketball and baseball, as well as Olympic sports including volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling. An alumnus of the University of Nebraska, Bill began his career shortly before his college graduation by calling games for NETV and serving as its main sports announcer for more than ten years. He also served as the sports director at KTBU-TV in Houston where his television duties included play-by-play of football, basketball and baseball and host of University of Houston coaches’ shows. (Great link to an interview with Bill at http://www.csnhouston.com/video_content_type/ inside-green-room-bill-doleman) Bill has two daughters. Reagan Claire, who will be 11 in August, and Nora Grace, who will turn 7 in November. Bill doesn’t have much spare time (who does?). When he does get a couple of extra days each month, he goes to Colorado to visit his daughters. He loves going to Church and Bible Study. If his time and wallet would allow, he would golf and travel more and find new hobbies, but his work schedule is complicated. Despite being in a brutal business, he feels blessed to have a job that he really enjoys so spending extra time at the office is no big deal. “Strange to think on my off days that I look forward to getting back to the office. But then again, I watch and talk sports for a living.” Favorite Memories of Fairbury High? Playing sports and being a Jeff. I enjoyed playing basketball for Chuck Moore and Don Mahlman in the New Gym with its aroma of old popcorn, dim lights, the stage that crowded the court, the pictures and trophies of state championship teams, and the fact that opponents hated playing there. I remember being a part of the 1983 team, winning the district title, making two free throws in the first round of the state tournament, the night we beat Seward in front of a packed house at Pershing in the semi-finals, and, of course the disappointing loss in the state championship game. While our team the next year wasn’t as good or

page 6

successful, we did get out to a 9-2 start that included a win over Lincoln Pius and the championship in the Columbus Holiday Tournament. We were even ranked in the Top 10 before reality hit and we ended up 10-9. Still it was a one of the great memories of my life. The fact that we didn’t win a football game, well, that’s another story. What else? I remember freshman initiation and being stuck in a tree with my shoes tied. Dave Ward coming into Renshaw’s English class with ‘81 painted on his chest and Gary Brown standing in the back of a pickup truck with a bottle stuck in underwear he had on outside his jeans. Also, I think that’s the only time I have ever facepainted that it wasn’t my choosing. I guess now I do it every day. I remember going across the street to The Little Store at lunch and then just hanging out between the Old and New buildings at lunch, on the wall, and hoods of cars. There were of course those who scattered to the East, North, and West Sides, too. Never did a small town high school have such territorial lines drawn to define cliques and cultures. I always liked Fridays because we could get Pizzawiches. I’m pretty sure I bought a Mountain Dew, Munchos, and Sprees every day. And, yeah Fisbeck, I still remember what you did on a hotdog day in the cafeteria. I thought our high school bands were pretty good, especially during that state tournament run in 1983. I remember thinking Stan Stewart had the straightest part in his hair that I have ever seen, even to this day. Don Weeks bringing up Raquel Welch in some way on a weekly basis. Keith Richardson standing outside his classroom between classes looking like he’d rather be anywhere but there. Gary Junker beginning every class with, “Ok, for today...”. Diane Schutt letting us get away with more than probably any teacher anywhere and yet she somehow treated us like adults. Larry Bornschegl and Ron Oswald were two of the best men that I ever met and they were administrators. Go figure. I remember thinking I got a helluva deal at my first keg party when Rod Griffin didn’t charge us basketball players $2 to get in the Friday after we got beat in districts. Turns out Kansas and its 18-year-old drinking age was much closer than it really should have been, especially for those who did not have a 7th period class. Yeah, I’m looking at you Todd. Still, loading up Royce’s van and heading south provided a ton of memories that I wish I could remember. Yeah, I’m looking at you again, Todd. I remember driving around the square... around and around... making sure to be on the clockwise path where I first learned that you can turn right on red... over and over. Stopping at Godfather’s loading up on pizza and pop, while unloading quarters in the video games. I remember winning the state sportswriting championship and the fact that our journalism class put together the best newspaper and yearbooks in the state. I still have the sports desk with all of its carvings, pen and sharpie graffiti, and candy stains. It’s a part of history. It’s priceless (because it’s not worth anything). And, it provides me a lot of great memories. That’s probably a lot more than anyone bargained for when they turned to my write-up, but had I been able to be there I’m sure all of this and more would have come up one way or another and more than once. I know this, I miss and cherish those days and am thankful to have been a member of the Class of ‘84 at Fairbury High.

She also enjoys going to movies and spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren. She runs a couple of days each week and has participated in three Lincoln half-marathons. Favorite High School Memories? Probably one of her favorite high school memories is driving round and round the square with Dawn Moore Schacht. “We giggled and laughed and I don’t really remember what was so funny, but we sure entertained ourselves.” She also enjoyed working at the concession stand in the City Park with her fellow cheerleaders which they did to raise money for all their cheerleading activities.

However since Texas has been in drought conditions for several years most of the lakes are dry and that fun has been put on hold. Therefore their current hobby is cruising around in their 1970 GTO and taking it to car shows around the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. “Every time we get in that car it brings back memories of driving around the square and seeing all the guys driving Chevelle’s, Nova’s, etc” Favorite High School Memories? “This isn’t really a memory but just an observation. Knowing what I know now, I feel blessed to have been a teenager in Fairbury, NE during the ‘80s. It is so different for teens today. I think we had less stress/pressures and were able to really enjoy our youth.”

Kennedy is currently waiting to see if she made the competition gymnastics team at her gym…tryouts were held this last weekend. With owning a business and raising three active children, Lori has very little free time. That said, she does try to make time for some sort of daily exercise to keep me sane—walking the dog, going for a run or attending a TaeBo class. She also enjoys women’s bible study and volunteering at their church. Last month, Lori and her son, Thomas, went on their first mission trip to Juarez, Mexico. They drove down a truck load of supplies and donations, helped build a house in just two half-day sessions providing a sweet family a warm, safe, home to raise their small family of four. They also did a food outreach at a local church and visited an orphanage where they played with the children, did crafts and gifted them Hula Hoops. The trip was a life-changing experience, and she can’t wait to go again! Favorite High School Memories? “There are so many fun, silly memories from high school…far too many to mention. However, just the other day—out of nowhere—a song popped in my head, and I began to sing it out loud to my daughter, Kennedy. She loved it and wanted me to teach it to her. If you were ever on the bus coming home from a volleyball game or track meet, you might remember it. It starts out “Hello. My name is Joe. And I work in a button factory…” And, of course, we can’t forget “Boom Chicka Boom!” Those poor coaches and bus drivers…we must have drove them absolutely crazy singing those songs over and over again.”

Donna Peterson Hamre • 1980-1984 501 1st St SW, Watertown, SD hamredonna@gmail.com dhamre@personasigns.com After leaving the Fairbury area in 1991, Donna lived in Mobridge, SD for 22 years. While there she managed a non-profit organization and was in charge of the local thrift store and food pantry. Seeing the need for growth, she made the organization a federal non-profit and wrote grants to fully fund a new facility. They picked up a Representative Payee Service for Social Security clients who needed to have a payee. She was responsible for 32 clients paying all their monthly bills and giving them a weekly allowance. This proved somewhat stressful as all clients were court ordered or medically ordered to have a payee. They didn’t always like the idea of someone telling them how to spend their money. She continued to secure funding and expanded the food pantry and started a program giving 50 school age children a backpack every Friday filled with food for the weekends. She also started a sack lunch program feeding between 30-80 people a day who needed a meal and could not afford one or had no means of eating on a particular day. In 2013 she decided she needed a change so she packed up and moved to Watertown, SD. She now works as an account manager for Persona, a sign vending company that makes signs for McDonalds, Hotel/Motel Chains, Dominos, Taco Johns, Cherry Berry, Casey’s, Holiday Stations and several other companies. Donna has three children: Faren, 27, Tanner, 25, and Evan, 10, and one grandson who is 7. Most of her free time is spent doing family activities. She enjoys spending time at the lake and going to all the sporting events Evan is involved in. She enjoys dirt track racing and tries to get to at least one race every weekend during racing season. She usually takes in at least one twins game and one Vikings game a year. Her goal is to get to a NASCAR race someday!

Curtis Scheele • 1980-1981 72449 US Hwy 183, Holdrege, NE jocurscheele@yahoo.com Curtis is a water management specialist working for the USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service in Holdrege, NE. For those not familiar, USDA is a federal agency that works with farmers in conserving natural resources by providing financial assistance to install conservation on the land such as terraces, erosion structures, etc. His current position with the agency has him working strictly with irrigators. He has worked for the agency for 27 years, in Holdrege for 16 of those. In fact, David Bedlan works for the same agency there in Fairbury. Curtis has been married to his wife, Jodie, for 20 years. She is a physician assistant working part time with Plains Radiology in Kearney, NE. They have four children, Trevor 13, Carson 10, Daylen 8, and Anika 6. Their free time is with kids activities. They are active in their church. They play golf 3-4 times a year and still play slow pitch softball in the summer. Otherwise, it’s work at the job, work at home and kids activities. Favorite High School Memories? Having only attended Fairbury his Freshman year, his memories are slim. Here is his effort. He remembers: • West siders, south siders, etc. I was a West Sider cause that is where I knew the folks from Steele City and my cousin drove me every day. • Wade Vernon cutting his finger nearly off on the table saw in shop class. I remember him holding his hand and everyone looking for his finger. After a little while and nobody finding a finger lying around, he showed his hand and his finger was there but only hanging by the skin. I remember this so well, at least I think I got it right, because I couldn’t stand the site of blood or pain so it hit me hard and I kind of hid in the wood storage room so I wouldn’t have to see anything, but yet act like I was helping. Sorry Wade. • Julie Schrock writing on the back of my jacket “kick me” and people did until I figured it out. She did it in Social Studies as she sat behind me. It wasn’t because she hated me, it was just ornery fun, at least I thought it was. She always picked on me in that class. • Current Events in Social Studies to start the class. The only time we never had class because current events took the entire time was when President Ronald Reagan was shot. I can’t remember the teachers name. I remember what he looked like. I want to say Keith Richards, but he’s a Rolling Stone. (Keith Richardson) • White painter pants and Gary Brown, who wore them a lot. • Discussing with classmates how cassettes were going to be the past and CD’s were taking over. • Because I graduated Odell, I will throw in three memories from there that has a tie to Fairbury. Early our sophomore year, I remember Darcie DeBoer attending Odell for a couple of weeks in the fall. To this day I don’t know why she did that or if she ever went back to Fairbury after that (she did). • The Odell basketball team would go to the state boys tournament on Friday to watch games all day. Our Junior year I remember watching Fairbury beat Seward in a hard fought game. I remember seeing some of you there. I believe your band was called the “Sound Machine”. Maybe it was just a playoff thing but I thought it was awesome! I remember listening on the radio to the heartbreaking loss to Elkhorn Mount Michael while in Fairbury at my cousin’s wrestling meet. • This memory relates more to a song in 1984. Maybe some of you did the same as I. So I only bring it up to see if any of you did the same thing. Because I liked loud music, on graduation day, as I drove from the school ceremony, I cranked up Van Halen’s song “1984” followed by “Jump” off their 1984 album. I think I repeated that all the way home for my family graduation party.
