On March 31, 2025, retired justices and civic groups in the Philippines filed a petition urging the Supreme Court to compel Congress to enact anti-political dynasty legislation, citing decades of inaction on a constitutional mandate that guarantees equal access to public service
According to the petitioners, more than 30 antidynasty bills have been filed in both the Senate and the House over the past four decades
However, Congress has yet to enact a law that prohibits political dynasties Hon Raoul Manuel filed House Bill 1157 during the 19th Congress on July 5, 2022 Titled An Act Prohibiting the Establishment of Political Dynasties," the bill seeks to implement the Constitution’s social justice provisions by ensuring equal access to public office regardless of family background
“To move forward as a country, we need to stop proliferating this [political dynasty] system,” Manuel said The petition was filed by the Sambayan coalition and others, including retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio T Carpio, former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and former election chairman Christian Monsod
They argued that Congress is violating the Constitution, which states, “The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law”
The group also requested that, should the Supreme Court grant their petition, Congress be held in contempt if it fails to pass the necessary legislation within one year

Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11, 2025, following a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) The arrest comes after years of pressure from human rights organizations and families of those killed during Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, which began in 2016 Duterte is the first Philippine president to face charges at the ICC He is accused of crimes against humanity related to thousands of killings between 2016 and 2022 Police records cite over 7,000 deaths in anti-drug operations However, human rights groups estimate the figure could be as high as 30,000, including alleged extrajudicial killings of poor or wrongly accused individuals Among those speaking out was Dahlia Cuartero, mother of 22-year-old Julius Cuartero, who was killed in 2016 She said her son was taken from their home and falsely accused of using drugs Christine Pascual, another grieving mother lost her 17-year-old son to
Both women joined a prayer vigil, saying that for the first time in years, they feel justice may finally arrive The ICC said it exercised jurisdiction due to the lack of sufficient local investigations Human Rights Watch and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines welcomed the arrest They said it sends a clear message: no one is above the law They urged the Philippine government to cooperate fully and ensure Duterte does not receive special treatment Victims’ families also demanded broader accountability At a press conference, several mothers called for investigations into other officials, including Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, the former police chief They expressed frustration with the local justice system, saying the ICC was their last resort The arrest marks a milestone in the Philippines’ reckoning with the drug war’s legacy While it offers closure for some, many stress that this is just the beginning As one grieving mother said: “Justice is finally walking toward us But we are not done yet ”

On April 2nd, 2025, the Trump administration declared a national trade emergency and imposed a 10% tariff on nearly all goods imported to the United States to address ongoing U S trade deficits, affecting American importers, consumers, and major trading partners, including China and Hong Kong, which will face a 125% tariff increase
The sweeping tariffs, effective April 5th, affect a broad range of goods, with exemptions for steel, aluminum, automobiles, auto parts, and certain energy products However, the majority of imports will be subject to the 10% levy, significantly raising costs for American businesses and consumers
President Trump has justified the move by accusing U S trading partners of benefiting from lower tariffs while engaging in unfair practices that harm American businesses He claims these practices lead to job losses in manufacturing and undermine the U S economy, aiming to push trading partners into more balanced trade agreements The economic consequences of this bold action remain uncertain While some experts predict substantial price increases for consumers and potential retaliatory tariffs that could escalate into a global trade war, others believe the tariffs may lead to a more equitable global trade environment
The long-term impact on the U S economy, American businesses, and the global trading system is still unclear

Russia launched a deadly missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on April 13, 2025, killing at least 34 civilians and injuring over 100 others in what Ukrainian leaders described as a deliberate act of terror amid ongoing efforts to end the war The attack occurred on Palm Sunday, as civilians were heading to church, marking the deadliest assault on Ukrainian civilians this year Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike and called for immediate international action "There are dozens of dead and wounded civilians, he said "Russia has committed deliberate terror A strong response is needed from the U S , Europe, and the world" French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the condemnation, warning that the attack jeopardized peace negotiations led by Washington
U S President Donald Trump also issued a statement: Everyone knows this war was initiated by Russia alone And today, Russia alone chooses to continue it with blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and diplomatic efforts Legal experts and world leaders have pointed to violations of the UN Charter Article 2(4) prohibits member states from using force against the sovereignty of other nations Russia’s military actions clearly violate this provision Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed justification under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which permits self-defense However, international law experts argue that this article does not apply, as Ukraine did not attack or threaten Russia The devastation in Sumy reflects the continued suffering of civilians in the war As condemnation grows, the world looks for meaningful responses, while Ukrainians face fear, loss, and uncertainty in the ongoing conflict

Inflation in the Philippines slowed in March 2025, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, easing the rise in prices and giving consumers nationwide some relief as essential goods became more affordable
Several factors contributed to the slower price increases, particularly in food and transport Food prices, a significant portion of household expenses, have risen more slowly
This is largely due to a drop in rice prices, with more moderate increases in meat, vegetables, and other foods
Lower fuel prices also contributed to a decrease in transport costs, which in turn helped reduce overall inflation Prices for dining out and hotel stays rose more slowly, while areas such as clothing, household goods, health, and entertainment saw smaller price hikes For minimum wage earners, the slower inflation rate offers relief Lower food, transport, and other living costs make it easier for families to manage their budgets
Although housing and alcohol prices continue to rise, the overall decrease in the inflation rate remains a positive sign for the economy As inflation slows, the central bank may have more room to adjust interest rates, which could encourage investment and further economic growth Food inflation eased, mainly because rice prices fell Meat prices still rose, but at a slower pace Vegetable prices increased slightly less, and fruit prices remained steady with a slight drop However, fish and seafood prices rose significantly, which could be a concern for families that rely on these products Meat, fish, and vegetables were the largest contributors to food inflation

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a rise in electricity rates for Metro Manila and nearby provinces this April, citing higher costs at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and additional power transmission charges, sparking concern among Filipino consumers over increased living costs The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) reported that average market prices rose from ₱2 73/kWh in February to ₱5 34/kWh in March, fueled by limited supply and rising demand
In March, demand in Luzon increased by nearly 6%, from 12,904 MW in February to 13,670 MW, driven by hotter weather Meralco also noted that peak demand hit 12,467 MW in March, up from 11,344 MW in February While customers are due a ₱0 20/kWh refund, Zaldarriaga stated that it is unlikely to offset the higher generation and transmission costs Usage is expected to stay high throughout the dry season Projections indicate peak demand could reach 14,769 MW by mid-May, as temperatures rise and cooling appliances are used more frequently

A U S biotech company, Colossal Biosciences, announced in early 2025 that it successfully revived the extinct dire wolf through genetic engineering in a private facility in the United States, raising global scientific and ethical concerns Dire wolves went extinct thousands of years ago To de-extinct the species, scientists inserted dire wolf DNA into gray wolves using advanced gene-editing technology
The resulting pups, born in late 2024 and early 2025, are now housed in a private preserve The company claims these animals are 99 5% genetically similar to dire wolves However, not all experts are convinced"This is just a big dog with a few genes inserted," said Dr Stuart Pimm, a conservation biologist Colossal Biosciences describes the project as a breakthrough in synthetic biology

But many scientists and ethicists question its purpose, practicality, and long-term consequences
"The
move
has reignited the debate on de-extinction whether
reviving
extinct species is wise or necessary. 'You need to bring back its environment, not just the animal,"
Bioethicist Arthur Caplan.
Critics call the effort a publicity stunt and argue that resources would be better spent on protecting endangered species still alive today

Over 600,000 Filipinos died from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in 2024, making these illnesses the leading cause of death in the country, according to records from the Philippine Statistics Authority, with the Healthy Philippines Alliance (HPA) urging citizens to prioritize their health in 2025 to help prevent further loss of life From January to June 2024, ischemic heart disease caused 49,577 deaths, followed by cancer at 27,396, stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases at 25,186, and diabetes at 15,617 While the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a decline in NCD-related deaths across the Western Pacific Region, the Philippines continues to face a worsening trend Premature deaths among Filipinos aged 30 to 70 due to NCDs are also on the rise Health experts attribute the increasing number of deaths to several lifestyle-related factors
A 2019 study from the Global Burden of Disease revealed that 41% of deaths caused by NCDs worldwide were linked to tobacco use, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, and fossil fuels To address this health crisis, the HPA is encouraging Filipinos especially the youth to adopt healthier habits These include eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking water instead of sugary drinks, reducing alcohol intake, avoiding tobacco and vaping, staying physically active and getting enough sleep The group is also calling on families, schools, and communities to create environments that support wellness and prevention
They believe that small, consistent lifestyle changes can significantly reduce health risks and improve both physical and mental wellbeing With the new year approaching, the HPA hopes that more Filipinos will commit to long-term wellness and help reverse the country’s growing NCD crisis
