A Home for New Canadians

MAORI X CAMBODIA

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The house of the Māori and Cambodian couple will be a place by which both cultures, practices, and values, meet in the middle in a modern western country. Considering the diversity of Canada, this newlywed couple want to unite their similarities and differences together in a home. Both the Māori and Khmer people share many visual similarities in aesthetics, materiality, and prints/patterns. The space intends to feel comfortable while expressing cultural elements both ornamented and decoratively, twisting in modernity and simplicity. The goal for the house is to feel cozy and inviting through a warm and deep colours palette and vernacular material used throughout both traditional Māori and Cambodian homes. The couple are extremely familyoriented, commonly hosting cultural events as well as expressive in personal hobbies. The space will accommodate through an open floor plan enabling comfortable circulation and movement. It will suggest engagement between architecture, cultures, and people.
