BLACK HISTORY MOMENTS POTATO CHIPS WERE INVENTED BY A BLACK MAN BY ACCIDENT According to Enchanted Learning, a site that charts inventions, the potato chip was invented in 1853 by George Crum. Crum was a Native American/ African American chef at the Moon Lake Lodge resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. French fries were popular at the restaurant during that time, and one day a diner complained that the fries were too thick. Although Crum made a thinner batch, the

Perry Wallace is now a Law professor at American University in Washington, D.C. But in an earlier time, Mr. Wallace was a reluctant basketball pioneer. While Wallace shuns the distinction, he does recognize how his ascension in athletics is an important legacy worth remembering. Wallace was a star athlete and

Wallace recounts much of his time at Vanderbilt in a memoir, Strong Inside, published in 2014. In interviews, Wallace is modest about his historic achievement and admits to bitterness towards those he felt could have helped him. Wallace’s basketball career was replete with hardships, but eventually he did find some small redemption. In his final game against Mississippi State in Nashville, Wallace scored 28 points Page 3

customer was still unsatisfied. The chef kept slicing them thinner, then fried them to a crisp, and seasoned them heavily with salt. By then, they were too thin to eat with a fork. Crum expected the fussy customer to dislike them, but the man praised them highly. So the potato chips were invented by accident. The chips became popular and subsequently became known as “Saratoga chips” or “potato crunches.”

standout student in the segregated Nashville school district. After leaving high school, Wallace enrolled in Vanderbilt University in 1966. In 1967, he became the first Black varsity athlete to play under scholarship for the Southeastern Conference. To be clear, he was not the first Black player to play in the SEC; that honor belongs to baseball player Stephen Martin at Tulane University.

and snagged 27 rebounds. It was a huge game for him, which he dedicated to his late mother who died the year before. Slam dunks were illegal in basketball at the time but Wallace scored his last two points with one. Wallace explained in a NPR profile that he did do to thumb his nose at the racism he faced on the court.

While Wallace’s desegregation of basketball on a varsity level should have been cause for celebration, it was a virtual nightmare for the player. During contests in the Deep South, Wallace faced death threats and catcalls. Though he was embraced by his teammates, the taunts of opposing schools were scary and disheartening.

After obtaining his law degree from Columbia University in 1975, Wallace worked as a trial attorney for the Justice Department, then at the Environmental Protection Agency before taking the job at American in 1993. Wallace specializes in environmental law, corporate law, and finance.

PROPHET'S CORNER Black America This Is Our Time

T

he late Republican Senator Everett McKinley Dirkson of Illinois, supported the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, after having supported Senator Barry Goldwater Republican Candidate for president in 1964. When asked by another Republican, “why would he do something like that,” he quoted Victor Hugo, “no army is as strong as an idea whose time has come.” There is a possibility that can be stronger than an appointment of an appointed time; a period where an event can be granted during a propitious season. Because there exist an approved season or favorable conditions, where what was considered inconceivable becomes possible. The conditions are ripe for the unimaginable, an occurrence that was not otherwise predicted, starts to take shape, because circumstances arrange themselves in a foreboding manner. In a fertile season, a woman’s body arranges itself for the possibility of pregnancy. I contend, there is a Hamitic covenant, and a season has come, that calls for the specificity of an inherent gifting, not a generic grouping. Then the host of heaven starts to disturb complacency that may look like disarray, when in actuality it is kindling a new dispensation of possibilities. Upon close examination, what is revealed is, an unfulfilled covenant, allowed to exist until such a time as this. It is a season, like the woman at birth is told to push at the same time the pains come. The tendency is to contract and adjust to the pain, but she is told to push, making the pain harder, almost unbearable, yet she pushes with all she has in order to give birth. That’s what it will take, in a season that appears she can either live or die.

Page 8

I

t doesn’t matter how many miscarriages we’ve had before or how many still born. This period has covenant promise upon it! God needs the quintessential element of this unique appointment (Hamitic). It requires the purification of this distillation of truth. Some people will ask how it is that Hamitic people can or will give truth that has not already or is being given? Allow me to give a short answer to that. If black people have been excluded from the mainstream of everything, there are many developments they weren’t apart of or allowed to participate in, as part of the cultural evolution of the world. As such, there is a womb that has never been touched, a matrix of a revelation that is virgin territory. Like the donkey that Jesus used to ride into Jerusalem on, where never a man rode upon, in carrying Christ, it carried the greatest revelation that would ever be given to man. If the prophetic throughout bible was there to midwife the covenant purpose of the Father, its covenant purpose has not changed today.

P

resident Obama today (2-18-2015) tried to make a case for the distinction between radical Islam and Islam. Though he alluded to poverty, unemployment and disenfranchisement as elements often used to draw Muslim youth into a movement. There are wealthy Muslims who are seminal to a generation of inimical hostilities, such as Ben Laden, he said. The president made the contrast of, poverty, unemployment and identity doesn’t mean everyone marginalized, take to crime, inferring black people. The strange thing is, in Black History Month, in light of the recent murder of black men by police, there was no alluding to the historical arch bending toward a path of continuity furthering black achievement. Dealing with the Middle East, there was no need to, but in trying to separate “peaceful Islam” from radical Islam, his debt to black people wasn’t met. He stressed the most effective element in catching the trends of Muslims change in character toward extremism, was family and community, the first to notice and probably the most effective in curbing this disturbing tendency. It is a perfect strategy, for not only a pretext to a long war in the Middle East and justifies air strikes, in addition to boots on the ground, but it also advances the strategy of making America more Sharia compliant and softens Americans to blurring the lines of distinction to a more multicultural society. The president identified a very critical place, in trying to avert the dangers to young Muslim men; he says it is the family and community. This is also the case in turning the black community around; it engages everybody, not just designated leaders but it is every individual’s responsibility. That’s why it becomes black, which fades in the midst of an amalgamated purpose. Page 9

It would take a concentrated effort, with individual focus to bring about measurable results. So many people have misunderstood my message; they see it as exclusionary, in that there is no appeal to white people and consider the language divisive and anti-Christian. Some think there is no biblical basis for my contention. For some, it is recklessly antagonistic, while at the same time detractors offer no concrete solutions beyond repetitious virtual reality. Almost anything that tends to solidify the black family, restore and inoculate the black male or cause critical, independent thinking, becomes an anathema. Professor Orlando Patterson, Harvard professor of sociology said, “It is normal for the oppressed to take on the behavior and thinking of the oppressor.” Black historian, Carter Woodson said, “After a protracted period, black people don’t have to be shown the discriminated place, they will find it automatically, if one does not exist, they will create one. Why would a God who is the epitome and personification of justice and righteousness, keep defining Himself by an incorporated group and system, codifying the embodiment of what He is not? He doesn’t! It is the absence of dissent, the fear of a contrary opinion, uninformed conformity and the need to accede or be approved. The achievements black people made were through the pride of dissent, once the victories were won, our oppressors painted it as the proud strokes of patriotism. That way, they could take credit as well, making it American, for something they would not grant before the bloodshed. During Black History Month, we should be able to get away with this, without capital punishment. What the message says is, “we don’t need anybody to do anything for us, we don’t need any legislation to be us, and have the right to not care what anybody thinks about us.” The reason is, “we have a God that hath need of us,” this is our time; it is a period in time that requires us. For that reason, what we have never been quite able to accomplish, where some things have just became a proverb, “THIS TIME IS MADE

FOR US.” It is a special limited edition, not for prime time players, but those with the courage to deviate from the “road most traveled” to do God’s purpose. We start with us, that means everybody can participate, nobody knows us, like us or can appreciate us like us. We don’t have to become somebody else, to speak to us, nor does it have to be approved to be us. The confluence of, “Our Time Has Come” and the “flood stage of desecrating Christ,” along with prophetic end time indicators, points out this is a period filled with portent. If black people can fix their cause, in the cause of Christ, for this hour, we then have a recipe for the supernatural.

Well……….I’ve talked about Lois’ life some, I’ll talk about mine now. ‘Whew’ where do I begin? I mentioned previously that I was six months pregnant when I graduated from High School. Yes; I walked through the graduation processional ‘all belly’, but I made it! So, to the young lady who may be reading this book and feeling a little inadequate because you are pregnant or maybe had a child at a young age; know you can make it! Life goes on and you can accomplish any of the dreams and goals you set your mind and heart to achieve. Lamar was born in the summer of 1980. Momma Gaines was a ‘Godsend’. She was there for me through it all. Again; she did not condone my behavior, but she was there for me. She was a praying mother. When Lamar was three months old I started working part time at The Community Action Agency there in town and going to Illinois Central College full time. Over the years I enrolled in classes on and off. Just four years ago I earned my BA in Business Administration. Again; if I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!!!!! Cover Story THE BOP KING DLOW By Melanie Brown

Darrion Simmons, Bop King DLow, was born in the Austin community in Chicago. His dancing inspiration comes from MC Hammer, Michael Jackson and Chris Brown. He and his grandma danced together all the time too to Nelly’s “It’” song. DLow has two little sisters, two little brothers, and two older sisters. The 19 year old DLow stated that his name means “Determined, Loyal, Optimistic and Willing to Learn”. His popularity grew due to the “DLow Shuffle” dance that he created at 4am one morning. He had made up the dance and had no names for the moves but wanted to just do something. The dance was recorded at 5am and by 7am the dance video was uploaded on Facebook. The video had obtained 25,000 views by 9am. DLow would dance for fun and when he got angry. He didn’t want to take out anger on others. He encourages everyone to just dance and don’t worry about the outcome. The Bop King said “Be able to commit to it, have fun with it and learn with it to perfect it” concerning dancing. The perfect gear to dance in for him and his new dance partner Malik Coleman are high top shoes. The high top gym shoes guard the ankles. Jordan's and track shoes are great for dancing. On the contrary, boots, Air Force Ones, and shell toe Adidas aren’t great for bopping. Tight clothing doesn't work well either unless they are fitted jogging pants. DLow has been working on being more of an outgoing artist by incorporating rapping. He has music coming out soon that is very versatile. The songs are for anybody that enjoys dancing and positive messages. One of the songs is entitled “Be Yourself”. DLow is preparing for an I Am DLow tour. He has already traveled to a few states and performed last year on The Steve Harvey Show.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series

The 2015 BMW 2 Series lineup of coupes and convertiblesincludes a healthy dose of extra competitiveness with the introduction of three new all-wheel-drive (AWD) models. The new BMW 228i xDrive coupe and convertible, and M235i xDrive coupe offer BMW's Intelligent AWD system as a counterpunch to the AWD Audi A3 quattro and Mercedes-Benz CLA 4Matic. Those seeking more thrills can get a new Track Handling Package for the 2015 BMW 228i. While AWD will certainly be welcomed by some, 4-door shoppers will still have to look elsewhere until the new BMW 1 Series debuts sometime in 2017. Still, there's a lot to like about this smallest BMW car, and it offers a compelling choice if you're shopping for the Audi, Mercedes-Benz, or other rivals like the newly revampedAcura ILX.

What's New for 2015 The 2015 BMW 2 Series adds two all-wheel-drive models this year, the 228i xDrive coupe and convertible, and the M235i xDrive coupe, putting it on more competitive footing against AWD rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The 228i model also offers a Track Handling Package for enhanced handling performance.

Page 15

Interior The 2015 BMW 2 Series looks like a BMW inside, with the same simple-yet-elegant dash layout we expect from the German manufacturer.

Whether you're looking for an entry-level luxurysports coupe or convertible, just want something affordable that looks good, or just want to save $10,000 over the price of a 4 Series coupe, the 2015 BMW 2 Series brings the goods.

Rear-seat room is tight and not easily accessible in this 2-door. If you want a more accessible rear seat, the Audi A3 and Acura ILX offer bigger rear seats. Additionally, it'd be nice if BMW offered the xDrive all-wheel drive system on the M235i convertible.

THE EVAC TRAC

The EVAC TRAC Invention is the innovative evolution of home safety. It is an installable fire escape slide device for all 2-5 story residences that are not equipped with fire escapes. It also doubles as the worlds #1st raft designed specifically to evacuate residences during floods. The EVAC TRAC is conveniently installed underneath the window of the residence in a decorative box that can be used for expressive art, logos, advertisement etc‌ This device is an important safety device as well as a home improvement that can maintain or improve the appeal of the residence.

( THE EVAC TRAC WILL FUNCTION SIMILAR TO THE AIRPLANE SLIDES ) Hi my name is Mark Davis and I am the creator of the EVAC TRAC, Born and raised in N.Y.C, I have worked as a stock clerk, file clerk, mail clerk, security guard, superintendent, window installer etc‌ I have attended several semesters at CUNY and SUNY schools of higher learning, which would later help me develop the research skills needed to come up with concept of the EVAC TRAC. In my youth, my family was devastated when my uncle passed away from smoke inhalation after a house fire. Suffering from chronic asthma most of my life, my biggest fear has always been to be trapped in a smoke filled residence. One of the heartbreaking stories I came across, when doing my research, was that of a mother and her two small children becoming trapped in the bathroom of their (2) story apartment complex during a fire. While on the phone with 911, the family perished from smoke inhalation before first responders were able to reach them. If an EVAC TRAC was installed underneath their window, they would have had the chance to get out safely. After witnessing certain national tragic events, I began researching the different causes to evacuate residences and the devices used to evacuate them. The reasons were fires, floods, home invasions etc... The devices used were chutes, wenches, drop ladders etc... When I came across the fun house inflatable slide and the airplane evacuation slide, I knew I could do something similar for residences. Researching materials to make the EVAC TRAC flame retardant, I found that the materiels could also be used to make it buoyant for usage as a raft. I went on to create my own 2. original sketch designs and have filed a provisional patent with The United States Patent and Trademark Office. I am seeking to license this lifesaving invention with a company that shares my vision of bringing this device to the global market. The EVAC TRAC will provide people with a sense of security knowing that their homes are equipped with the latest technology to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. For advantages and more details on Mark's great invention follow him on social media and go to his website http://www.myevactrac.com/
